Five Easy Do-It-Yourself Wedding Centerpiece Ideas

A great way to save money on your wedding budget is to do your own wedding reception centerpieces. If you keep it simple, you can have elegant centerpieces without breaking the bank.

Here are five simple do-it-yourself centerpiece ideas:

Shimmering Silver

This is probably the cheapest do-it-yourself centerpiece of all! Gather up branches, driftwood, leaves or pine cones. Spray them with metallic silver spray paint and arrange in the center of the tables. Add a few tea lights and you have a shimmering centerpiece perfect for a winter wedding. Looks stunning against a black or dark colored tablecloth.

Tissue Paper Mason Jars

Here are surprisingly elegant centerpieces that cost under $10. Gather assorted mason jar sizes and wrap them in colored tissue paper, add a few flowers and you have cheap centerpieces.

Save The Date Magnets

Skip the Flowers

Consider using unusual things for your centerpieces such as peacock feathers, small sculptures, wooden carvings, glass vases full of beach sand or large rocks.

By choosing things that can simply be arranged, you'll save a ton of time and have do-it-yourself centerpieces that everyone will remember.

Think Functional

A centerpiece of candles gives off romantic light and can easily be set-up ahead of time. Likewise, food can be used as an attractive yet functional centerpiece. Consider arrangements of tropical fruits — including star fruit, pomegranates cut in half, melons and citrus — for a lovely summer centerpiece sporting bright colors.

Mix and Match

Scour thrift stores, discount stores and garage sales for interesting looking vases. Mix and match colorful vases in scattered arrangements for your centerpieces. Even drinking glasses could attractively display single stems. Add a few colorful blooms, and you'll have a lovely bohemian look for your reception tables.

Helpful tip: always remember to do a mock-up centerpiece a few weeks before the wedding, so you're sure it lives up to your vision. It's also a smart idea to enlist the help of a few friends if your centerpieces are even slightly labor intensive. With a little creativity and a little effort, you'll have unique wedding reception centerpieces in no time!

Hi,

I’m not actually the one getting married, but I play a huge part being a maid of honor! :-) My friend is having a beach theme wedding, getting married in NJ. THe reception is in PA where she lives, but I’m stuck on decoration ideas for the Hall……..I was thinking of getting some bowls from Michael’s or another craft store and filling it with sand and possibly floating candles for the center pieces. Any ideas would be appreciated! I’m also trying to stick with affordable decorations if possible.

michelle,
loving the sand centerpieces.
* check out these sand centerpieces, love these!
( i saw these cylinders at a Dollar Tree and Only A Buck) they were good quality and only a $1 each)

can i see a link or pic of the hall, to give you some ideas of what it may need? paper lanterns are super affordable and fill up a space. also using a color scheme like white, khaki, and a bold color will cut costs tremendously cause color takes less decor than white but pair it together and you have a winner!
*like here ( flowers of one type in one color can easily be bought at fiftyflowers.com or any local flower mart, walmart, or grocery store, just pick sturdy ones for DIY)

I bought tall clear vases and filled them with water, a few glass aquarium beads that matched the colors of the wedding, and 2 goldfish in each. I surrounded the base with gathered, tan colored fishnet and hot glued starfish, shells and pieces of marine cork. then I sprinkled on clear sparkles. i also floated a lit candle on the water.
The whole thing can be made up ahead of time on a round, white cake board. When you get to the reception, fill the vases with water, add the fish and then the candle and then light it.

If you are thinking floating candles - the bowls can get expensive. Shop you local “All for A Dollar” store - you can use various goblets, bowls, anything clear - super easy & only a dollar a piece…

First buy small, white, cake circles. Hot glue a tall, thin, clear vase in the center of the cake circle. Fill the vase with shredded confetti-preferably iridescent- the kind you put in Easter baskets. Buy very long stemmed flowers, fit them in the vase. Anything that cascades looks awesome. Lastly, hot glue a vine around the base of the vase and sprinkle it with sparkles. You can add a few petals from the flowers to give it a natural look.

I need help I’m getting married on April 10, 2010 and I have been procrastinating and has really just started planning as far as decorating goes. My colors are apple, champagne, and ivory. I am trying to get some really good centerpiece ideas, and a clear idea of how I would like to have our cake down. Someone please help me  with any ideas or helpful websites. The theme we are leading toward more is apple being that I found these beautiful apple wedding favors and hey it’s part of our colors.

Hi, I am getting married 10/10/10 and I am trying to save money by doing everything myself…my problem is lack of creativity. My colors are crimson, white, and the men have black tuxes. Bouquets are red roses and white carnations. The reception will be at a community center and they are completely empty…we will have round tables and covered chairs but what do I do for decorations, no nails, no candles. I would like it to have my colors (reds and whites) I may end up with red sashes on the tables…gathered in the middle or sashes on the chairs. :? Please help! Thanks so much

My friend had those colors and she bought a nice bowl from michaels and put red stones/pebbles things at the bottom and floated nice candles on top… if you can use candles, you can float really pretty flowers on top… it looked so pretty and it was cheap!

1.Buy 3 pieces of 4×8 lattice from Lowes or Home Depot. Draw an arch on the top of each piece and cut it out.
2.Paint the arched lattice white.
3. Buy 3, 8′ floral garland at Michael’s. Buy flowers to match your colors. Outline the edge of thelattice with the garland. Use hot glue to hold it on, white kitchen string, or both.
4. Connect the right edge of the first piece to the left edge of the second piece and the left side of the third piece to the right side of the second piece with white kitchen string. It will look like a bi-fold door and will stand on its own.
5. Hot glue flowers, petals and leaves all over the place.
Stand this beauty behind you and the groom at the head table. Your pictures will look absolutely amazing with this as a backdrop.

Hi all, I am getting married in September of 2010. The reception is an evening outdoor reception on the grounds of a local museum. We are having a sunflower-themed wedding with colors of sunflower yellow, apple red, chocolate brown and deep apricot. Both my fiance and I grew up on farms/ranches and would like to implement some “country” touches but not go overboard. Does anyone have suggestions for unique and cost-effective centerpieces? Mason jars are one possibility but I’d like to have a centerpiece with something other than (or in addition) to flowers. Our budget is tight so it would be helpful if the centerpieces were composed of items we could buy a little at a time. I would welcome any help or suggestions! Thanks!

Dawn,
That sounds like a lovely setting for your wedding. I’m sure your families will appriciate they trubute to them with the farm centerpieces. There are just so many options with a theme like that. Have you checked out the website Style Me Pretty? They’ve featured quite a few farm weddings that you might draw inspiration from. - Amanda

Dawn,
i would buy up cheap bowls or vases(stemmed urns) and fill them with apples or lemons. they would really go with your theme and for xtra effect have grapevine or greenery trailing from the centerpiece onto the table. check out baskets or mix and match items at second hand stores or flea markets. setting these out should only take up a few minutes and your done! good luck!

Stacey, thanks. I love the idea of using apples and will keep my eyes out for interesting and unique baskets or vases. What do you think about having several types of centerpieces in play (say 4 tables with floral centerpieces, 4 tables with bowls of apples, 4 with mason jars filled with candy, etc.)? Thanks!

Dawn,
i am thinking the same centerpieces will give a more pleasing look. using to many items has the tendency to make the room appear a bit cluttered. you can however set up a candy table ot just have simple lil’ bowls of candies ( also from a second hand store) around the centerpiece for guests to enjoy. another idea you could do is take the bottom of a cake plates or something similar and have your boxed favors with trailing satin or chiffon ( even plaid) ribbon nicely stacked and use that as centerpieces instead.(double duty decor!) i have seen this done at a more casual celebration.

My wedding is 11/26/10 and am planning a Hollywood Glamour (20’s) themed wedding. My colors are navy (other blues), white and black (men’s tuxedo). I would like to incorporate feathers in my centerpiece, but they can be expensive. Any suggestions on how I can use them and not break the bank?

I have a couple ideas. The first would be to get some of those large glass (or clear plastic) martini glasses. You can find them at party or craft stores. And get some feathered boas to fill the inside and drape over the side of the glass. If this is too plain for you you could do floating candles in the glass and then just put the boa on the outside. You can do the same thing with a hurricane glass and pillar candle with a feathered boa round the base.

The next idea is to have candles or even a floral arrangement in the middle of the tables and then get some fake feather pens (or make your own) and place a few at each table with little cards so your guests can write you a note during the reception.

The third option which appears to be getting on the pricey side is an image I found on google. It loooks awesome though. It has a glass bowl of river rocks and water on the bottom with floating votives in it. Then a tall cylinder in the middle with a large leaf, a flower, and a peacock feather in it. I’ll attach the image so you can see what I mean.

I also wanted to give you this link for some more affordable peacock feathers. Real ones are extremely pricey but if you plan on having the lights dimmed you could easily get away with these fake ones from Oriental Trading Company. They sell all kinds of crafts items so you could probablly get many things you could use from them and save money on shipping.

amanda, i might have an idea. you could get feathers and incorporate them into your bouquets, around base of cake plate.
for a reasonable price you could rent table lamps for your tables and voila instant centerpiece……
*table lamp rentals
this is extreme old hollywood glamour.
this is 1940’s dinner club from the notebook, alot didnt change from the 20’s
*video begin watching at 4:17
the centerpieces from that era would be low centerpieces. so candle globes with feathers around them or just plain candle globes. even single flower vases with 1 to 3 roses in them would work. table lamps were a staple. something that would give off subtle light. i have seen square containers with pillar candles in them. basically anything that you’d see at a restaurant centerpiece now would be at a 20’s-40’s supper club then. simple, unfussy, and dont take up alot of room.

I was going to post that picture! But I knew you had already posted it on here once before. I like your idea about the table lamps. They are candles I assume and not plug ins?

Another thing is that you could put feathers closer to the light source if you use battery operated LED lights instead of candles. Of course they don’t look as nice to the naked eye so this option would be for if you had them more hidden in the centerpeices.

Here are a few other pics. I especially like the one with the pearls and feathers. You could do it on a smaller scale with an empty wine bottle. Try visiting the local dollar store or party store for costume pearls.

getting married next July in an industrial-meets-urban loft-like space. (exposed brick, hardwood floors) We don’t necessarily have a color scheme to adhere to … mostly just black, white, and brown! Simple but classy… I’m getting married in a vintage suit… so nothing to bride-y or floral. Any DIY ideas for centerpieces??

Summer,
I’m not sure if these are too Bride-y but you said your wearing a vintage suit and you’ll be in an industrial urban enviroment. so I found some candle options. Here are a few really cool ones that would play on the theme and could be added onto. I found them all at wholesalemart.com and they have a square 3 teired version of the round mirrored one too. The beaded pillar stand is a bit more frilly but it would tie in the vintage theme and youcould do it with any color candle to fit your theme. The wave one is really simple, laid back, and sleek which would also be very industrial.

Marcy,

Art is such a broad category! You could really do almost anything. Colored water with floating votives, paint brushes and sketching pencils stuck in floral arrangements, etc.

The first thing that came to mind was to take creative pictures of numbers and use them as the table numbers. Here is a website where you can get ideas on creative numbers:

http://www.framethedate.com/frame-the-date.html

It shows you different artsy images when you “create your own.” They are really pricey but if you have a camera and an eye for detail there is no reason you can’t make your own!

Here’s a fun idea:
Get some old vintage record/vinyl albums large and small, clean them and arrange them 2 or 3 on a table on the long silver stands (the ones typically used for table numbers). Cut out Black & White photos of you and the groom and glue them in the center of each album (better to cut them circular). The black album makes a gorgeous and dramatic frame and then you can either give them to your guests at the end of the reception, or take them home and make a lovely, kitchy wall collage for your media room. *You can usually get the albums for pennies at a second hand store, but just make sure that they are not scratched!

Staggeringly versatile, hourglass shaped cylinders are larger at the top than at the bottom… or the other way around, depending on your creative whims and how you choose to use them. By inserting stemmed white rose heads and shell-colored pillar candles, you can reach your highest standards of elegance with this stunning, white-on-white arrangement. Or get creative, and fill with your own decoration ideas. Products may no longer be available, however, visit Illuminations for other equally exciting products offered by this retailer.
( pic included with this paragraph courtesy of superweddings.com)

one idea i have is depending on the height of your ceiling. take simple fishing line or thin ribbon and place a suspended flower heads above each table in different lengths9 keep a odd number of suspended floral heads) and have simple clear glass bowls of floating tealights and rose petals. this will be very budget friendly cause you can scoop up tealights by the bags, ribbon at craft stores, then head to your florist and grab bags of rose petals in the different shades of pink.
*kinda like this
( these tissue paper pom poms look fab!!)
*another idea
*rose petal and candle
* i thought this looked neat
* here is full website for previous centerpiece
i am loving the floating glass bubbles….

So, we are getting married April 24, 2010. We were supposed to get married next weekend, but had to move it out due to family illnesses. Our reception location will let us use their centerpieces but, well they arent very pretty. Our colors are cornflower blue and chocolate brown. Our favors are going to be grapevine wreaths with blue almonds to look like robin eggs inside a nest. Probably going to glue some moss on the wreaths. At any rate, I don’t want to be stuck with ugly centerpieces and to say we are on a budget would be an understatement. Does anyone have any ravishing ideas for a centerpiece? It is an evening reception. Ceremony is during the afternoon up in a mountain in an outdoor amphitheater. HELP! I need to start buying stuff now in pieces so I have everything by the end of Feburary or early march and am ready to roll.

i recommend putting candles in globes or other glass containers due to wind, if the centerpieces will be outside. i LOVE the glass bowl with the river rocks, candles, etc. i think that would be so perfect for this style wedding. actually, both of these could be used in your wedding. i have seen some tables with 1 type centerpiece and vice versa.

Gorgeous! Definately going to look into how to do something like this. We have white tableclothes, white chair covers, Brown bows on the chairs and cornflower blue napkins. The location suggested sprinkling something on the table but I am not sold 100% on that so we will see where that ends up. Although I had thought about using glue and blue sand and maybe making designs and then just randomly laying those around. But, I just don’t know. One of my friends suggested that we get the LED lights that are battery operated on clearance after christams and make the sand gardens and put those on the tables with blue and brown sand and maybe do a design in the sand but, i think it would get destroyed getting it there. Great idea but a logistical nightmare.

I was thinking of something wine themed as well. I’m thinking of getting a tall square shaped vase and fill it with corks from wine bottles, adorned with one simple yet elegant magnolia flower.

Kate,
The easiest thing to do would be to partially fill some glass containers with sand and place a votive in the middle. Then wrap some tulle loosely around the vases on the table and weigh it down with some sea shells and other beachy items. It will look like sea spray around it.

I need help….I am planning a surprise 40th wedding anniversary party for my parents. Round tables, white table cloths with burgandy napkins. I want to use roses in the centerpieces. I need ideas - colored vases, clear vases with crystals, mirror trays, candles, etc? I saw burgandy vases I like, but with the burgandy roses, it’s too much of the same color. I am afraid using white roses will bring the attention to the vase and not the flowers. What do you think about burgandy and white in roses and calla lillies (either flower could be burgandy).

chris,
i would keep it simple. clear glass vases( have sleek instead of crystal looking), in cylinder vases or glass container you choose i would put river rocks in bottom. then suround with burgundy votives in simple clear glass votive holders. it will keep it fresh looking and be very nice with the burgundy napkins. you could consider submerging a single rose in a cylinder vase too. it has a great effect when paired with candles.
*it is really nice

I did a quick google search for “orange wedding flowers” and I found this handy website that color cordinates flowers. The orange dahlias are very pretty and the light orange ones even look kind of tan too. Here is the link: http://www.weddingflowersbyheidi.com/flowers/orange.html

Renata,
actually i would have vases full of palm fronds. you can buy these at your local craft store along with cylinder or bamboo vases. if you use palm fronds you could always submerge tropical fruit or oranges into water then put the palm frond stems in. very tropical!!
i found this and thought that it would work. the colored water looks like the ocean and you could add mangos or mango/orange colored flowers at base.
*centerpiece idea
*beautiful wedding

my actual first reaction to your centerpiece was having bowls of real or artificial mango in wood or footed glass bowls or the palms.
*fake mango
* more ideas, love these
*palm leaf

Okay this is pretty fab!! depending on how many you need they may not be expensive…..
the bowls could be bought at any dollar store. tall vases would look nice too with votives.
*i love this too
the pic would work just the same. try saveoncrafts.com for the supplies. they are very reasonable!!

I’m thinking small cactus planted in terra cotta pots in the center (maybe even some flowering cacti?) and spread some flamenco fans out around the base of the plant. It will be plain but very pretty and true to theme.

Great idea but something bugs me. Flamenco fans are Spaniard not Mexican. But neat idea.

maybe a mini zarape about a foot long and a foot wide with the terra cotta pot and cactus in it.

The first thing I could think of was teapots! You could put a teapot filled with flowers in the center of each table and tea cups with candles in them around it. Teapots and cups range in very different prices (anywhere from 4 to 400 dollars a piece) so to cut the cost of buying the really fancy victorian patterned teapots, you could get solid colored ones and go to your local craft store to purchase rub on flower designs or the paint stroke lessons books and have your bridesmaids and family members help you adorn them. I’ve included some pictures, you can certainly google some sites that sell cheap teapots/teacups. Also check garage sales and second hand stores you’d be suprised what people have and don’t know it. My friend from work just recently bought a vintage teapot at a yard sale for 5 dollars and found out it was worth at least 50!

That’s a good idea! Maybe either have golf balls at the bottom, filled with water and a hot pink Daisy floating at the top. Or Even putting a section of grass at the bottom of the vase, then the gold balls with a flower on the top, that way it’s both green and pink…hmm I’ll have to try several examples. We’re making white chocolate golf balls and placing them in the mini cake boxes with a ribbon tied around it with a tee attached. :thankyou: Any other tips for anything let me know!

Had another brainstorm! What about a white floral topiary? You could wrap the stems in pink and green ribbon and it will look like a golf ball on a tee! You could also put little colored flags in your centerpieces with the table numbers on them. Instead of Hole 1-18 it’ll be Table 1-? These would be really easy to make with some constroction paper or card stock, and a few short dowl rods. Just cut the paper into large wide diamond shapes (so when you fold it in half it looks like a triangle) and glue the dowl or even a plain white drinking straw into the crease of the folded flag. Then write your number on the flag and place it in the centerpieces!

I am on a creative roll today, I thought of yet another idea! Wheetgrass! You could put a pot or galvanized tub of wheatgrass in the center of eack table and put the cute flags i mentioned above in the middle. And then you can paint plain golf balls to look like a tux and a wedding dress and place one of each on the grass. (or put your white chocolate golf balls there since wheet grass is edible and wont hurt the chocolate). It’ll be a real hole in one!

How much of the course will be yours for the wedding? All outdoors? What about customized golf umbrellas in hot pink & green used around your wedding area? There are so many links for custom umbrellas, I would have to do more research based on how many you wanted. It was the the first thing that came to mind when you said Golf course, and FUN. You can be very classy with umbrellas…

My wedding is for winter of 10/11… some centerpieces ideas are some variation of small tree branches or stems… i plan to spray paint the branches and place daisies or magnolias on the branches using floral tape… or idea #2 is to spray the stems with adhesive and roll them around in diamond looking stones or marble looking things… my colors are silver and purple but the branches could very well work for a brown color theme….

If you go to the save-on-crafts.com website they have the “how-to” on making Iced Branches out of the Colorform Vase filler. This will eliminate the need to roll your branches in stones or marbles, and gives a more natural “iced” effect.

brooke,
i think submerged or floating flowers would be great!
*floating wedding centerpiece
*submerged wedding centerpiece
*wedding centerpiece votives

i would head to a local $ store or craft store. or go here…
saveoncrafts.com
buy up clear glass bowls, votives and holders. then go to walmart and buy some pink flowers. large head roses would be best!! fill bowl with water and add some floating flowers;surround with votives.
*cheap wedding centerpiece
*inexpensive wedding centerpiece

i cant stress how expensive the submerged flowers look! i have even suggested getting tall glasses, later you can use them at home.( think tea glasses) that look like cylinders. but saveoncrafts.com will most likely have glass cylinders in bulk for cheap!! just add water and flowers.

those are great!! i would set them among a bed of rose petals from light to deep tangerine. start with peach, a medium orange, and then deep tangerine petals. another idea you could do, which was my first instinct is head to wal mart and buy up spray paint in platinum and set among rose petals. would be beautiful!! you could also take them and buy bunches of flowers at walmart and tuck inand out of the openings. have a floating candle instead of regular votives.

jeanne,
what is your complete color scheme? are you using gold or silver? would you oppose spray painting them in a metallic? another idea is this: take your centpieces and add tangerine floating candles( can spray paint metal or leave alone) then surround the centerpiece with more votives and tangerine candles. sprinkle rose petals ( optional).
i personally think these great lil’ items would do a great job as your centepieces.

Gill,
I would take simple glass cylinders and submerge a burgundy calla lily in each , then add a floating candle. you can also use a grouping of 3 on each table in different heights, and in between spaces you could add more burgundy callas peaking in and around the cylinder bases, just leave plain, or instead of callas at base add greenery or some great table jewels such as rhinestones( oh yes, you can also add rhinestones or acrylic rhinestones at bottoms of cylinders too, it will give a glistening effect if surrounded by votives.) Tip: use simple glass votive holders that look like a mini version of the tall cylinders. it is a very nice and a great way to get the burgundy calla look without having to buy alot of flowers too.

Then I’m sticking a huricane candle in the center and a few pretty silk flowers into the sand to compliment my luau wedding. I’m also filling tall hurricane jars with shells for the buffet table. carla,
i found a very simple, unique, and gorgeous centerpiece idea. i think it would be so pretty with some votives ( from a $ store) or saveoncrafts.com

*christmas wedding centerpieces ( here is some links to browse; i especially loved the pinecone in a bowl( you can even white spray glitter these) and accent with votives. ot have glass vases with standing evergreen branches with votives. make sure they will not topple over, cause pine branches can be heavy. use a low centerpiece, if possible.

*winter centerpieces

simple candles are always a winner! but why not jazz it up and have unscented peppermint candles or centerpieces.

*candy cane candles

*candy cane centerpieces

*floating candy cane candles

*Do-It-Yourself Christmas Centerpieces

( thumbs up on this one! why not get boxes and wrap them to look like gifts? stick with one decent size with 2 smaller. or have one large one in the center and holding evergreens, have the lid propped up on its side against the box. think about those christmas shows where the gifts look sooo elegant ( even attach a piece of evergreen to the bow) withthe big bows and you just take the lid off!! then for favors have mini versions on each place setting with the favors inside. it would be fun!!

i also thought you could keep the simple centerpieces and use tons of white lights or suspend paper lanterns fromt ceiling. this could be purchased from save on crafts. and reused in your home or garden after. you would actually be investing in your decor.

here is a link i COULD not resist sharing.

*absolutely stunning

( okay i am in love with the suspended paper lanterns or lights) for one reason cause you can keep those tables relatively simple as shown. i do hope this helps!!

hi. it might be a good idea to take a simlpe glass vase, square if you want, and put some white x-mas lights with a couple christmas balls, probably red or something metalic in the bottom, and add some pine tree boughs arranged as flowers, maybe add a pinecone or 2, depending on how much you’d like to add to the vases. you could also put a simple ribbon- bow around the vase as well. someone I spoke to said that they also used that fake evergreen garland wrapped in white x-mas lights around the edges of the ceiling, and it was a beautiful, yet cost efficient wedding. Most of the winter’s seasonal decorations can be utilized throughout the whole winter, and therefore, are very appropriate for a wedding at that time of year. congrats!

Use ivory table cloths, and purchase wide red ribbon in bulk online - preferably wired, 2 1/2″. This ribbon is usually available for Christmas at the large shops (Garden Ridge or similar) around the end of the summer. Have other people help you find it. THEN use the ribbon on each table in a gift motif - Criss-cross in the center, and make Very LARGE bows for the center of the table. This works great for round tables. I did this with ivory table cloths and gold ribbon. Right in the middle of the bow, I placed a pedestal candle holder and lit a long-burning candle. If you can only find pedestal candle holders for tapered candles, consider 3 per table in a cluster with the bow surrounding on the bottom. IF you consider an accent color, try spraying some leaves or branches with gold mettalic spray paint, or make some icicle branches with Colorfil Diamond vase filler - how-to’s on save-on-crafts.com. You should be able to do alot with a little for your whole reception. I didn’t even mention flowers, but some silk rose bouquets cut & separated into clusters used with the ice branches or gold leaves should be beautiful. I hope this helps. ;)

Carla, thinking about it, pedestal Votives would also be beautiful. I like the idea of gift-wrapping empty boxes and the smaller favor boxes. If so, use your accent color (gold or ivory - notice I keep saying gold?) for your ribbon or use them interchangeably on each table. Send pics after the wedding! One site for ribbons is jkmribbon.com.

I’m not sure about the reception hall decor but I do have an idea for YOUR centerpieces - hopefully I’ll find something for mine - take 3″ round glass jars and fill them with fake holly and place a semi-ivory flower in it that has been cut so that it just rests on the berries. For added color you could tie a cute ribbon of your choice around the jar. Hope that helps! –Jenny

jessie,
i always love recommending candles, theyare the most inexpensive by far, you can have floating flowers or candles in bowls or vases, submerged roses in cylinder vases( you can use tall drinking glasses even) for this particular color scheme, i LOVE the idea of using several votive holders of ivory candles sitting atop lavender linens. no lavender linens? ivory instead? well just reverse the color of candles. another fave idea of mine is the colored water centerpiece. just take your cylinder or glass containers fill with lavender water ( tinted with food dye), add a floating candle and sprinkle with rose petals. or floating rose petals with floating candles. another idea is the wedding favors doubling as centerpieces. the dollar stores carry glass votive holders and glass bowls for super reasonable!! really reasonable!! also a single perfect bloom, in a vase surrounded with candles makes a simple but powerful impact or vases of submerged fruit even submerged grapes!! nonfloral centerpieces are excellent!!

i got to thinking how beautiful the purple grapes would be. if you dont put them in water, why not lightly egg white the surface and dip in sugar. they will look frosted and sparkly. you could use very fine white glitter also, or mix it in the sugar. fake grapes would work amazingly well for this. i did this to some fruit for tree ornaments and the white lights ( inthis case candles) made it shimmer and EVERYONE commented on how beautiful those ornaments were. i went to our local $ store and walked away with all colors for a $1 a bunch ( and they were the long elegant bunches). the glitter and glue was next to pennies!!

Hi, I’ve had to do a wedding in a month with about a 500 dollar budget. We did a LOT of shopping at the dollar store. We bought simple cylindars, and silk flowers, we also purchased the battery operated candles and a gross of votive holders at Ikea, and the finishing touch was the “loose diamonds” that we scattered around the table along with silk rose petals that were set off by the romantic “flame” of the candle light.

Is the wedding soon? If so buy small lavendar flowers and place them on the tables as is, make sure they are sorta bushy so that it looks like there are quite a few even though there isn’t, or you could place them in cardboard boxes with ivory fabric wrapped around them! Hope I could help! Jenny

Hello,

I am getting married in October. The wedding and reception will be outdoors (Maui). It will likely be breezy or windy. The colors of the wedding are Ivory, Red and Black. I thought of a possible theme: Love, Chocolate, and Bubbly - romance.

The number of guests will be 100. What ideas so you have affordable romantic table dressings.

Thanks for your help!

Monica,
I just recently attended a wedding on Maui! The wedding I attended had a luau after the ceremony so all the decoractions were taken care of but there were 3 or 4 other weddings on the same beach that did their decor themselves. One of the coolest things I saw was pineapples! They used pineapples and tiki torches to create an aisle in the sand and then when they left each of the wedding guests got a pineapple (it was a smaller wedding so maybe instead of one per person you could do one per family or one per table). Also the hibiscus trees will be constantly dropping flowers, so you could have your wedding party gather some blossoms to sprinkle around the tables. If you didn’t want to worry about collecting flowers all day, you could just use leis and lay them out on the table. Once again I have too many ideas running through my head to type them all up. Here are a few pics of what i was going for:

Oops! In my post I said Hibiscus trees, I actually meant Plumeria. The hibiscus droppings are shriveled and wilted by the time they fall, but the plumerias are still in good shape usually. Sorry for the confusion!

Bobbie, I know others have posted links to this idea before but i feel it’s worth repeating because it is AMAIZING! Here is one DIY idea for you that comes from one of my favorite DIY couples : http://www.thisyounghouse.com/wedding-album/

They did a backyard wedding too. For their trees they used battery operated paper lanterns, i found some good ones here : http://asianideas.com/baopla.html

To adorn it a little more you could wrap a floral garden (available at most craft stores) or set up an arch in front of it where the ceremony will take place. Even after the ceremony is done, this creates a great place for pictures to be taken by not only the bride and groom but also other wedding guests. Plus, if you use fake flowers they will be cheaper, and last forever so you can reuse them later!

If you’re going for the country look for your centerpieces, you can put almost anything into a galvanized bucket (like on the website) or even those thin wooden apple buckets. You could do flowers that people can take home and plant, or food/drink of some kind. I dont know how “country” you want to take your theme but you could also place your centerpieces on hancerciefs (spelling?). There are so many cute ideas for that theme that can be really affordable!

Hello,

My husband and I were married in January but will be having our reception June 13, 2009. Our colors are red, gold and black and I’m having the hardest time coming up with practical, inexpensive but elegant ideas for center pieces. I’ve thought about the floating candle idea but floating candles seem to be a bit pricey. Any assistance you can proivde will be very helpful.

Thank you,

tia,
for practical centerpieces edible would be best. make up batches of cupcakes or brownies etc, have them sitting on a tiered platter or a single crystal platter would do. if you already have favors stack them up in a pyramid in center of table. another idea is pictures of you and yours on the tables, with red rose petals scattered around frames, at different points in your relationship, you can bring them home and use later. one more idea, why not keep it simple and have clear vases with a single rose in center of table sprinkle rose petals and add votives. votives are the single most inexpensive idea. $ store they are $1 a piece. if you dont like floaitng candles why not have floating flowers? again, $ stores carry the greatest clear bowls or vases for this. my fave would be the edible centerpieces.
another fave of mine, if at a catering venue, is have simple rolls and butter just like a restaurant. think restaurant style and you will have it made. they have to leave room on the table for all that great food!!
roses in bulk can be pretty inexpensive at the right place. and depending on # of tables, you may not need many. last idea. are red plumes from a craft store put in vase and instant centerpiece.

My wedding is in July. We are having an outside ceremony, and a hall reception. The hall itself is pretty shabby (tight budget, yaaay!) My colors are ivory(my dress), pale blue, and oceania (grey-ish blue). What are some ideas to draw the attention to the centerpieces? I have gotten rose petals to put down the middle of the tables as “runners.” Any ideas would be very welcome. Thanks!

i have a pic for you. the only thing you need to buy are votives. this is a gorgeous and very inexpensive way to dress up the table. the dollar stores should have everything you need. dont overlook the ability to get a bulk price though. also craft stores. they will help you anyway they can.

I’m having a casual summer wedding at my house at the end of June. I wanted to do something with fresh lemonade/fruit punch in pitchers as part of the centerpiece but don’t know what else to put around it. My colors are pool and green, but I’m doing an array of other bright summery colors for flowers and such. Any ideas?

Katie,

Something very simple and inexpensive you could do would be Big bright colorful daisies in tall glassware. It would be very springy and complement your lemonade pitchers. And you could have some wheatgrass to bring in the green too. It would be so cute! Here are a few pics of the daisies i’m talking about, if they are too colorful (like there could be such a thing ;) ) you could use white or even some tinted in blue.

one idea. you could put small bowls of floating flowers around the pitcher or your favors. another idea is set the pitchers on round platters and put more lemons and tuck small flowers or greenery in and around the lemons. also tuck a small card with calligraphy writing within the arrangement if your numbering your tables or just want to name them for small bit of whimsy. i personally your idea is plenty and you need nothing else you can add more bulk with plenty of greenery spilling from the pitchers onto the table; gorgeous!!. leave plenty of room for guests to eat and relax. i think you might like this website…

I forgot to mention in my last post a neat idea i recently saw at a family friend’s wedding. Both she and her husband have a big sweet tooth so here’s what she did: She went to the craft store and got styrofoam shapes (mostly squares and circles of various sizes). Then she spray painted them all white (really more of an off white). She stacked 2 to 3 of the shapes on top of each other to look like a teired cake! She decorated them with ribbons in her wedding colors to hide the seams where the pieces met and she adorned them with fake flowers. Each table had an elegant (but not edible) wedding cake in the center! They did have a real cake too to serve the guests. Just another great idea for a low budget centerpiece!

rachel,
take glass vases and fill with a layer of fake snow in bottom. put white/ivory roses and curly willow in vase. it will look like they are sitting in snow and the curly willow will give it a wintry branch look. you can also take the curly willow;use spray glitter and give them sparkle. my fave is simple white glitter. just make sure to shake off any excess. if you are not fond of glitter on the tables. take spray glue on branches (or buy these before or right after christmas) and buy craft bags of faux ice crystals. mixed with white roses then votives lining between centerpieces will bounce and shimmer off the candlelight. another idea whcih can be free. take simple evergreens(if using pine boughs remember the sap that will seep onto tablecloths) and line them up on center of table mingle inexpensive white votives in clear votive or frosted votive holders among the branches. round tables? just have a fab setting with candles nestled among the boughs. simple, cheap, and elegant!!

Another idea for a winter wedding centerpiece would be to get tall votives or glasses and go to your local craft shop and see if they have glass etching supplies. You could stencil on snowflakes around the out side of the glass and even a wintry phrase if you wanted to like “Walking hand in hand in winter wonderland.” And inside you could put navy or cream colored candles.
I am all for placing smaller centerpieces on mirrored tiles because it not only reflects the light but also makes the centerpiece appear larger and appear to fill up more space on the table with out stretching the budget! To hide the edges of the mirror you can use the fake snow mentioned in Stacey’s post, or you could have some family members help you cut out paper snowflakes of various shapes and sizes and drop them around the tables lke confetti. This is a great look when your wedding is in winter but you don’t want a “Christmasy” look.

carla, i was unsure if candlelight could be used. your wedding daytime or evening? water tinted pink with floating candles would be superb! add fresh rose petals to surround your glass containers. another idea that can be done is a tall single tier like holder (think pedestal) if you need a tall arrangement. add clear glass votive holders with pink votive candles. use greenery and place around with greenery or another draping foilage to hang gracefully down pedestal.

another idea is finding large mouth wine glasses (think about thicker vs. thinner glasses) with pink votives. arrange in different heights on table with rose petals. but a pure and elegant fave of mine is the classic simple pink rose in vase.(like fancy restaurants have, if it works there then surely it will look fab at a wedding!! smile) it graces a table like no other, add candles and it makes a table.

you dont even have to have florals at all. simple brad and butter centerpieces with candles are a winner. so are doubling your favors as centerpieces with scattered rose petals. think having the single stem rose i am talking about setting beside a couple of framed pictures of you and your fh. it will be a hit. and going to walmart to make copies then buying $2 frames will be simple enough ( you can put them in your home later) . a florist will sell rose petals by the bag for mere pennies ( where i live a large bag cost $5) i am in love with monogrammed cookies in clear gags tied with satin ribbon placed on an elegant container. it really is super nice. doubles as a favor too!! or the cupcake or cake centerpiece!!

*tips to keep centerpieces cheap

*cake or cookie centerpiece idea ( isnt this amazing!!

one more idea is having grapes incorporated into your wedding. fake grapes incorporated into your wedding will have a powerful impact. any craft store or walmart sells them. $$ stores carry simple glass bowls to set them in. you can even eggwhite them and have them sugar coated to sparkle. ste tons of them ( it wont take many bunches to loook lush) and have some hanging gently over rim. take clear glass votive holders or frosted white holders with pink candles and surround this bowl. elegant! you could add grapes to your cake, arch, and other floral items, including bouquets. fake grapes are so wonderful to use!!

heh! google image black and white garden wedding board.

you can do this one of 2 ways. make it outdoorsy or keep it clean and simple. its amazing what a single stem flower in each of glass vases grouped together looks like. just beautiful!!

this might be a silly question  but did youwant white or a splash of color. cause green centerpieces would be a knock out!
google image black and green wedding

another idea if using green would be simple. greenery clippings.. if you live in a area or someones garden that would offer free branches. it looks amazing in clear glass vases filled with water. also google image white and green centerpiece. the green would pull in the outdoors and really make it look pulled together.

adrianna, it is floating candles. you can use small black rocks, beads or vase gems. coffee beans are also popular for nesting candles directly into — avoid water of course. just make sure the water wont take the finish off the beads. partylite sells this stemware. they are (believe it or not) stemmed pillar holders ( for pillar candles!!) so just google search stemmed pillar holders and you will find what you need. Ebay is a good place to get these too, search for stemmed pillar candles (link) and scroll down the page to the stores, there are several listings right now. good luck!! btw, i would use small black pebbles.

While looking at a wedding venue last weekend, I saw a beautiful centerpiece that we may try to duplicate. you wouldnt have to use those particular stemmed candle holders. check out all your local home decor places. pier 1 may have them but might be expensive. hobby lobby would have them and i know in bulk they will give you a discount. or you can find something similar and use it the same way. think amazing square or round glass bowls. they wont be as tall but will have that “get the look” for alot less. i will keep looking though!!

1) Spray paint the bottom of a clay pot black, or whatever color you choose. Once dry paint the top rim a difference color.

2) Collect branches to put in your pots. I just cut branches from a tree in our yard and used one large branch per pot.

3) Fill the pot with rocks to help secure the tree branch.

4) Create the toilet paper ornaments by cutting a swatch that will cover the toilet paper roll. Don’t worry about getting all the way to the top and bottom because your accessories will cover it up. Once you have glued the fabric to the roll, punch two small holes in the top of the roll, one of each side and then thread wire or string through the holes as a way to hang it. Finally, glue beads to the bottom and add a small boa to the top - or whatever trimming accessories you choose. (fringe, ribbon, etc)

5) Collect gems with holes in the top to hang from the branches. You can find gems at Michaels and other craft or bead stores. Then thread with clear string or wire and hang from the branches.

6) Glue orchids randomly on the branches and finally, cover the top of the pot with flowers or moss to cover the rocks.

Have fun!

Vicky, the real question is do you really need slip covers? I’ve been to weddings with rented chairs, and as long as they were all matching chairs it didn’t take away from the look at all. Also it saved the brides and grooms a good bit of money by not having them.

If you really want the nice look, i would first ask the company that you got the chairs from if they offer them (for an additional fee). They may give you a deal since the chairs and covers will be together. If not, there are many many online resources such as http://www.eventswholesale.com/-strse-201/Folding-Chair-Covers-for/Detail.bok that you can buy from. I’ve found them ranging from 3.95 - 15 a piece. Fabric is expensive when you start looking into multiple yards, making your own might end up being more costly than you had expected. However if you are dead set on personalizing your own, most fabric stores sell patterns for slip covers, and if your local walmart has a fabric section, they often have a 1-2 dollar a yard section, that could help with the cost too.

Adrianna,
You should be able to buy them at a store call AC Moore.
Or do a search on glass vase. You should be able to fine them. They be higher in price. Good Luck :D

rachel you could take taller glass cylinders and fill with black coffee beans then top with a fuller pink flower or pink votive or alternate both flowers and candles it would also look need to have three different hight containers and groups in sets of thee on the tablethen scatter pik petals around them.

I am getting married August 15th, 2009. My colors are burgundy and khaki. We are on a small budget. And I am wanting to do the centerpieces myself. My wedding is outside and we are not wanting to do anything really expensive. I would really appreciate any ideas.

Thanks,
Tammy

You might try getting some small tree brances from outside, staining them the right color (if needed), then arranging flowers or butterflies on them. Maybe get some plastic or shiny gems to scatter around the table.
You could also use flower pots (decorated if you like) with plants in them already, or pick your own…then handmake ornaments that will catch the sunlight.
Not only are you being Green, but hopefully that plant will live long just like your marraige!

Tammy Frank,
*Think of Your Theme ( rocks in vase, floating candle pic)
( you can buy these at a dollar tree or only a buck for a buck, then go to a craft store or walmart or better yet a landscaping store, get a big back of pretty rocks, you may have to wash and dry them?!? but for inexpensive i would!! smile. buy a bunch of cheap floating candles and voila!! instant chic. i love the flower added to vases! it has burgundy and with the shades of tan and brown in the rocks it would so fit!! ( i think this would work so well with your color scheme) glass bowls would work too. if you are having favors why not let them serve double duty as your centerpieces? i love edible centerpieces bread and butter( think logans roadhouse! omg! that is all i need that bread is sooo good, take the florals please!!) or cupcakes. I had a friend that had a fish fry/crawfish reception at home, one of the best reception ideas ever! so laid back. she chose silver paper towel holders and paper towels for the centerpieces to some it may sound tacky but it really wasnt! it was a great idea cause of the style food, would be good for a bbq or any country style theme( think outside the box) , or depending on the meal you are having. Or have bowls full of mixed wrapped candies ( chocolates etc) your guest will love it!! another idea is a single bloom with a large flower head like hydrangea, dahlia, or large rose etc. why not do like the restaurants and have 1 flower in single vase it looks nice and serves the purpose. i personally love the simple centerpieces cause larger ones leaves less room on table. another idea is using simple and free clipped greenery, just buy containers to hold it.
*budget friendly wedding board ( look at all of these such great lil’ boards and lots o’ tips!)

example of greenery centerpieces in picture of waiter. christina had a great idea of the plants. southern living had a wedding on a simple budget ( home and backyard). thats all it was on white tablecloths, oval galvanized tub was the beverage holder, the food was on silver platters. it had greenery garlands and ribbons on front of cake table. the floral plant centerpieces were reused or returned back to their owners( they did have them in urns to make it more sophisticated) and what i loved about it was it was the centerpieces ( flower plants) didnt match just like you’d see different flowers in a garden. it was so elegant!! another idea is like in medieval weddings it was common to place flowers or plants around the room instead of on the table, that was saved for the food.

for my weddign i took mason jars my grandma had bu they are also pretty cheap to buy and then o found burgundy khaki plaid material and cut it in strips and tied it in bows around the top of the jar. i also bought rusty metal hearts at a craft site and glied them in the center of the hear then i filled the jars with cinnamon scented fall potpurri but you could also do candles or what ever you wanted.

amanda, hi
i had a tinted floral centerpiece and it took a long time to change the color of the flowers(white). hours . i also used pink( not to much food dye with pink flowers and they werent really affected, just a little darker ) it was beautiful though. i wouldnt recommend white or light flowers unless you dont care if they change. heh! great idea i hadnt thought of, vials! as long as they are water tight and conceal them.
look how neat this is. it took overnight. i think it would be neat to have this at a wedding, if you wanted something really different, the flowers “might” begin to change i would time it to see, its amazing!!

here is white hydrangeas in blue water, i am sure they just started turning by end of night.
gorgeous!!

*Flowers by Exclusively Weddings,

*Food Coloring Flowers

I just read that that white roses absorb dye faster than carnations and daisies, due to their yellow centers not very well. but inorder to see color in the petals it has to be highly concentrated. otherwise, the human eye will barely notice it, if at all. so low concentrates shouldnt change them before the wedding ends. just enough to tint the water.

Renny,
hi!!, i can tell you an idea that could be free( well except for simple containers like glass bowls or square glass vases, at your local Dollar tree or only a buck, even regular $ stores)
have your cake and other decor in pink and orange. add inexpensive pink, orange and white paper lanterns. even if its during the day, no matter cause they will add pops of color. ask a family friend or member, or check your own yard for greenery you can clip, make sure it drapes and is not poisonous. i had a friend that did this, she used crystal pedestal cake plates, she incorporated her colors in napkins, and other decor around the room, it was so beautiful. you would never be able to tell it was free. i would use bowls for outdoors, though, with pedestal cake plates it can slide off. bowls of wate with floating flowers is another. look at the summer garden party link, with hydrangeas which is fall friendly but expensive, see what pops of color can do! i just love this, i actually bought this magazine when it came out just for this article.( could you imagine this with greenery and add colored napkins? wow!!) it looks chic, simply elegant, and so easy on your $$$. you could alternate orange and pink napkins. you could add gerber daisies or roses( which believe it or not, in bulk is one of the cheapest flowers) instead of hydrangea. and dont 4get! ribbon can do absolute wonders, just secure to table linens, as in posted pics. stunning!! who needs alot of flowers with this!! also here is a pic i used recently, tying ribbons around napkins. or use clear glass containtainers fill with water and lime slices add flowers and voila! you can even get clear glass containers, food dye the water a shade of pink or orange and fill with the opposite color flowers and greenery. i hope this will give some ideas. But i will stand assured on the greenery( plus its my fave) and mother nature will give whats in season so it will take the guesswork out of that!! have a great wedding!

In your case instead of lime slices, you could use orange and grape fruit slices because they are orange and pink! Just a thought! Also I wonder how some of your suggestions work? Everytime I have tried dyeing water and putting flowers in it, it has stained the flower when the water saturated the stems. Should I put those little water bulbs on the ends so the water feeding the flower is still clear while the water in the vases is colored? Please let me know how this works!

The tables will have tablecloths on in those colors, I did not want to do balloons this year. I have small round glass bowls not sure what to do with them. Have a $ 25.00 budget. Can you help me with an idea? Thank you

sheila, hi! take those bowls and fill with water and have floating flowers. wonderful flower heads are daisies and gerbera daisies. google image floating flower centerpiece and you will see lots of pics , this is inexpensive and beautiful. also floating candles are very nice, sometimes craft or warehouses such as sam’s have bags of floating candles.adding a colored water would be nice consider adding white flower heads into green or yellow food dyed water. supermarkets have beautiful bouquets of flowers that can be clipped or talk to a florist and see what they can do. you may walk away with almost perfect blooms that have been culled.(even if they are assorted colors it would still be beautiful) silk flowers may bleed color into the water.

* Beta fish centerpieces…
( scroll down to floating candles in bowl) this is another option having floral petals mixed with 1 nice candle. if the bowl is not very big have water and 1 simple bloom.(google image inexpensive centerpieces)

I would love for people to post up some pictures of their wedding or picture ideas of any of these color schemes that they’ve seen. Thank you and have a blessed day!

sara, heh!! i am giving you the different color scheme links. didnt know if you were you wanting to choose between the colors you have listed or you were considering other colors? i think navy and fuschia would be amazing with bm and gm in navy blue, the fuschia would pop against it. i love fuschia and white but was wondering if that would be dark colored enough. dark flowers or dress colors can look black in photos. i also thought of another scheme ivory/cream or champagne with fuschia set against brown. this would be an elegant scheme.

Sara, I am in a wedding in July with a Black, White, and Fuschia color scheme also. We are having a very hard time finding anything in black and fuschia for our groomsmen to wear (bridesmaids dresses were no problem however). Everything we’ve found has been Navy and Fuschia. If you haven’t made the final discision yet you might want to look into that to see which color combo will be the easiest to match.

well, seeing as your wedding is in july, i would not use brown because that’s very fall. i love the idea of fushia and white, but if you love dark colors, and want to stay true to yourself, using navy blue with the fushia would be beautiful. i think making fushia and white your main colors and using darker colors like black or navy as accents would be awesome. but the wedding is for you, and you only. so make sure that YOU are happy with whatever colors you decide on. you’re the one that has to look back at pictures 50 years from now!

if i were you, i would definately have my maids wear black or navy blue, use fushia flowers– hot pink carnations are very inexpensive, and look beautiful with everything. they last long periods of time out of water too. for your centerpieces, i would stick with the hot pink flowers or hot pink candles, and have a satin fabric in the same color as your maids’ dresses underneath to add depth.

i am a florist, so if you need ideas about what to do with your flowers or anything else, you can email me at b3ag7@hotmail.com

I was looking on Bed Bath and Beyond’s website today for a wine rack, and I found these really cool candles that are practically begging to be used in a centerpiece or as a wedding favor! They are wine glasses (with long stems) and are filled with red candles. So they look like red wine but when the candle is done burning you can take the wax out and use the stemwear! You could do something similar with other colors too. Just thought I’d share my awesome discovery!

You could make a rose topiary. All you need is a styrofoam ball (pick your size); wooden dowel rod (pick length); flower pot; floral foam to fit inside the pot; flowers; and straight pins or hot glue gun. All you do is take the flower buds and either glue them or use the straight pins to attach them to the styrofoam ball. When finished attached the dowel rod to the bottom and put inside your flower pot. I attached a picture of what I’m talking about.

Carol, I don’t think it’s too late in Dec. for that idea at all! Just stay away from the red berries and holly on the wreaths and it won’t be too Christmas-y. You could get the ivy wreaths and spary them slightly with fake snow and put them around a large hurricane vase with a pillar candle in it. And put smaller t-lights or votives around the outside. Bath & Body Works gets these t-lights in around novemberish that are called “the perfect winter fragrance.” It would accent your theme nicely but you have to be careful because to strong of a fragrance could affect some guests’ allergies.

I have a great idea…Maybe take some inexpensive flower pots and collect some twigs that look like mini trees when inside the pots and spray paint the pot and the branches silver then hang red and silver beads and crystal looking necklaces on it. Then set candles all around it…I could explain better if needed I saw this on the show platinum weddings and it was absolutly dreamy and I think it is a good mix with Christmas but also newyears because of the beads

buy a bag of the cement you mix yourself and fill mini metal galvanized pails with it. then take sticks you have collect out side or from an apple tree and put them in the cement to form mini trees. you can buy mini apples at craft stores for really cheap and hang them on the branches with fishing line. then cover the cement in the bucket with moss that you can also buy at a craft store.

I have square mirror tiles. I have also decorated my votives to look as though they are sitting in a red rose and will sit two on each table. However it still is missing something. mY colors are red, black, & White. I don’t want it to look Christmasy/ like valentines. please help i’ve found alot of items that i probably could use on dollartreedirect.com but don’t know what to do with them my mind goes blank. please help

What if you placed a clear vase in the center and filled it with all red m&m’s or black beans - something that would be eye-catching. You could then place some flowers on the top in the other wedding color.

Or you could make white chocolate and dark chocolate lollipops and stick them in the vase. Fill the vase with red flower petals for an added effect with foam underneath that goes unseen. Guests can take a lollipop during the reception one at a time so that at the end, you don’t have alot of picking up to do after it’s over.

Lastly, how about floating candles? You can fill a round vase with water (and even put little crystals or lights in the bottom) and then put some floating candles in your wedding colors in the bottom. That way when you light your votive holders, you can also light this which would reflect off the mirror. You can also throw some crystals on the mirror part for an added effect.

If you need any help, let us know. We can find some of this for you if interested. :P

I like Lissette’s ideas. Or you could get some cheap silver 8×10 frames from the dollar store and print off lyrics to your favorite love songs to put in them. Each table could have a diferent song. And then you could place the frame on the mirrored tile with the candles next to them so the mirror reflects the light off of the candles around the frame. If this still looks to plain you could sprinkle rose petals on top of the mirror too or just put two crossed roses across the mirror with red or white ribons on them.

This is a variation of what I am doing for my cousin’s wedding. Her colors are Black, white, and Fuschia. So i got some scrapbook paper (12×12) in face designs of those colors and layered them in the center and cut lengths of fuschia, and black ribbons and layed them across it before putting the frame with her favorite loves songs on it (shes a music teacher thats why we went with a musical accent) and i will put rose petals, tea light candles, and hershey’s kisses sprinkled around it. The estimated cost is about $100 for 25 tables. Hope this idea helps!

oops! My comment was supposed to say “fancy” not “face” designs. lol! The ones I have are lace prints and rose prints and some silk prints. You can even put some real lace over it if you’d like the paper to show through. Or paper doilies work well too. So many ideas!

I’m making my own centerpieces for my October 11 wedding. One word - wheatgrass. It’s so very cool…

Here’s what I’ve done - I collected tin cans (large, medium and small) and I wrapped them in beige burlap. I bought ribbon to match my wedding colors to wrap around the burlap. I bought really dark potting soil and I bought wheatgrass seeds online.

The wheatgrass literally takes 1 week to be at centerpiece growth. I have 20 round tables, plus other tables to decorate, too. The grass is light green and very simple to do and looks SO modern and cool! My fiance loves it…and it’s so inexpensive.

I’m placing smaller ones throughout the reception (which is outdoors) and I’m also putting a lot of votive candles on the tables with small glass containers of candy that matches my wedding colors, as well.

I’ve got lots of ideas…! I spent less than $100 on all my centerpiece stuff…

Kylie, great idea! I love wheatgrass and those are great directions for DIY. You make it sound easy. :D I hope you share more of your centerpiece ideas …

here are some wheatgrass wedding inspirations from google and flickr. Wheatgrass makes bright colors look incredibly festive, or, it can give a subtle asian feel if you use it with white, natural materials like wood or bamboo and a few branches or orchids. If you’re growing wheatgrass in clear containers you can wrap a thick ribbon around the bottom of the glass to conceal the soil.

I also like your wheatgrass suggestion! it goes great with the whole “green” wedding idea. You could even have wheatgrass teas and smooties too! Or if you weren’t planning on keeping them afterwards you can spray some glitter in them like they do with artificial (and sometimes real nowadays) flowers. So they catch the light in the breeze. It would be gorgeous!

I have seen glass rocks (the ones with a flat bottom) placed around the mirrors to carry the centerpiece out a ways. I would also suggest something that would add a little shine; such as crystals. As long as you pick one main color and use the others as accents it will not look like a holiday themed wedding. Too much of every color will make people think red and white only, Valentines. But red with white accents would show elegance.

Hi, I hand-make favors and centerpieces for weddings and such at Your Moments Created. So, I thought I might share with you a centerpiece that’s been a hit with our brides and you can do it yourself! Just buy 4 clear glass, small, square candle holders at Walmart for about 68 cents each or such.

Buy one matching square vase that’s taller than it is wide (also at Walmart for less than $10). Also purchase either a handful of real flowers or fake flowers, and 4 matching color small candles. Lastly, buy a bag of coffee beans at your local shopping mart. Not ground, but actual beans. Fill up each small candle holder halfway with coffee beans. Then place the small candle in the center. Do this to each candle holder. Than fill the tall square one with foam or moss and drop coffee beans all around the foam so that it looks like you filled the entire vase with beans. Now place your handful of flowers in the center. It’s a beautiful centerpiece that anyone can definitely appreciate! See our picture to confirm!

We do alot of affordable centerpieces and favors so if we can help anyone out, contact us at YourMomentsCreated.

I found this image on google, so sorry for not crediting it, but I love it! Gumball topiaries- colorful, playful, cute and artistic. They would be easy to create with mini gumballs.

I know I used some a while back as party favors and they were a hit- We also incorporated gumballs in the candy buffet. I got mine at Gumball.com and the service was excellent. I believe using the half inch ones glued to little balls on sticks with ribbon and terra cotta pots would be great!

Good luck with all your planning!

Hi Sonja,

My wedding was outdoors, so for my centerpieces, I bought annual flowers from a nursery and planted them in cute, inexpensive containers. It made for a great centerpiece because it went right along with the season I had my wedding during and after the wedding guests could take home a centerpiece to plant in their garden (the few that weren’t taken at the end of the wedding I gave to my mother-in-law, who also planted them). That way guests (or you) can plant your new marriage in the garden after the wedding and watch it grow and bloom!
Another idea from a girlfriend is that if you have a Trader Joe’s (it’s a grocery store chain) in your area, they sell minature rose plants that come in a cute tin container. They cost 3.49-3.99 each and are adorable. You can order them ahead of time to have the tin match your color scheme or just go with a shiny tin that looks great when surrounded with votive candles because the light shines off of them and they sparkle. These can be planted too after the wedding (I have one in my yard from my friend’s wedding two years ago. Cute, huh). My only advice is that I would get them or have them delivered to the store 2-3 days before the wedding because they don’t last in the containers for too long. My friend got them a little over a week before and had to replace many of them (we also had a heat wave of 115 that week, but hey, better safe than sorry!).
Just a thought…

Dear Denise,

The newest trend is to have a cake made of styrofoam and covered to look like a real cake. Only the top layer is made of edible materials so the bride and groom can still do a cutting ceramony and save the top layer for their 1 year aniversary. They then have regular sheet cakes that they cut and serve the guests. It’s much more affordable!

You could do your daughter’s cake this way also so that she could have cake to serve her guests while having the top teir of the faux cake made of something she can eat.

Great ideas!!! I love helping people be more creative and have helped many people with do-it-yourself centerpieces for their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs or weddings. I will defintely pass this information on to them.

Hi Kelly, a few ideas for you from some of the cooler uses of grapevine I’ve stumbled across lately!

Pic #1: the small placecard holder (grapevine ball) is a DIY project by Tricia at WeddingBee. She glued rings on the bottom and cut a slit in the top to hold the cards. You see a lot of grapevine "orbs" on tables now, a very contemporary, rustic and appealing look!

Pic #2: Brides went wild with the grapevine orb idea, making really large ones covered with twinkle lights and hanging from the ceiling. Extremely chic, I love it!

#3: This is Mrs. Radish’s DIY grapevine ring pillow, too sweet for words. She only had a few minutes to put it together, but the result looked great.

Okay, second row pics. #1 is an adorable "birds nest" decoration hung from trees with lovely satin ribbon. This from an incredible StyleMePretty wedding.

Pic #2 is a delicious chocolatey-looking grapevine monogram wreath, also from StyleMePretty. After seeing this, most other wreaths look kind of blah to me!

Finally, Pic #3 is a centerpiece from Michelle Rago. No grapevine here, but you could cover slender square cylinders like these with a base fabric, then wrap the entire thing in grapevine like she has with natural fibers. Wiring mini-fruits like a belt is a gorgeous touch, you could use berries, pods or small green apples.

Just some ideas … you can also use grapevine as a beautiful swag along fences, aisles or head table chairs (try combining with a floaty organza fabric). You can also arc it over floral designs in vases like you see so often done with bear grass, very simple and rustic. This CP at brides kind of shows what I mean. Hope that helps!

Can you tell me what the centerpiece above is and where I might be able to find it or something like it (the one with the green things popping out of the white rocks)? I’m doing brown and green wedding and wanted to go with an “earthy” feel for my centerpieces, without spending much money. Thanks.

Well, I was going to answer this individually and then decided perhaps to you collectively would be better! Whenever I’m designing for a bride, one of the questions I ask is “where is your favorite vacation spot” … the reason I ask this question is that, being a destination designer, it’s important to know WHY they chose our destination. Many times, Puerto Vallarta is not their favorite destination choice but was a destination which was affordable. Their answers help me to create an ambiance which they will love - whether their favorite destination was Italy or Spain or Napa Valley I can bring that feeling into their wedding, but still mix-it with the area we are in!

So, my suggestion to you when you are trying to plan centerpieces and decor, is to list some things that either you as a bride know about yourself and your groom (or as a helper in the creation of the wedding list about the bride and the groom) love … aside from colors you need to list flowers, songs, movies, favorite vacation spots, things you love to do together - the list is endless but I think you will begin to see a pattern emerge.

After you’ve done that, then you can start planning on how to really specialize the little details - the centerpieces, the tablecloths, the placecards, etc. around the things that make the two of you a couple!

So, my suggestion to Andrea would be to find hearts made in a way that isn’t Vday heartlike but more artsy heartlike - I would turn to art, photography, those sorts of things in order to plan on how to incorporate the hearts without being cheesy. You could do willow branches shaped into hearts for the middle of the table, with apple green chiffon overlays. I would do a slightly different shade of green for the napkins and then use the red color as accents - instead of the focus. Instead of doing typical chocolate and flowers, I would try incorporating the hearts in ways the bride and groom would love but their guests would not expect and that’s hard to know without knowing the bride and groom … i.e. here in Vallarta I would paint some artistic hearts on marracas or, perhaps, find some funky pewter heart charms to tie around napkins both as an accent and as a favor.

For cornflower and ivory … glass containers filled with rocks and either ivory gerber daisies or roses would look really nice. Perhaps buy some inexpensive bowls that you can paint a cornflower blue to float tealights in. Or you could fill the glass bowls with rocks and water, color the water a cornflower blue and float tealights and between the glass bowls place heads of ivory gerber daisies - sortof like a runner. With cornflower napkin accents, I think that might look really nice. But, like I said, adding accents which really represent the bride and groom as a couple will help you come up with some amazing ideas.

Re: the caribbean … the wedding theme is built into what makes you and your groom a couple - what are the things you love to do, love to listen to, like to visit … why are you choosing the caribbean in the first place … what sort of experience do you hope to encounter there - what would you like your guests to experience? Once you’ve decided those sorts of things, I think a wedding theme will be a lot more evident.

I would highly recommend against tall centerpieces. People can’t see and, if your wedding is outside, you are going to compete with wind (or the chance of wind) and having the problem of them blowing over. I think short to medium centerpieces are a lot better. If you really want to make your wedding tropical, you might try bamboo runners and short centerpieces filled with local tropical flowers like ginger, lilies, etc. I would research what’s popular in the caribbean - look-up photos of the area and, from those, decide how you would like to decorate your tables so you really get a feel for the local culture of wherever it is you are at.

hope that big long message was helpful and best of luck to all of you on your wedding day (or the day for those you love!).

My brother in law and sister in law are renewing their vows on Valentine’s day next year. I am the matron of honor. Their theme is Valentine/hearts and the color is apple (a little darker than red, ,not as dark as burgandy. I need some ideas for favors and center pieces (cute not cheesy). The wedding being on Valentine’s day I was thinking of incoporating chocolate, candy, flowers. Any ideas?

Thank you so much,
Andrea

Dear Jessie,

Hello! Well, the very first thought that came to mind was using watermelon! I’m not sure if you’re a “not a fruit bride” but, if you
