Five Easy Do-It-Yourself Wedding Centerpiece Ideas

What's a great way brides are saving money on their wedding budget? Doing their own wedding reception centerpieces, of course.

If you keep it simple, you too can have elegant centerpieces without breaking the bank. Here are five quick ideas to get you started.

Shimmering Silver

This is probably the cheapest do-it-yourself centerpiece of all! Gather up branches, driftwood, leaves or pine cones. Spray them with metallic silver spray paint and arrange in the center of the tables. Add a few tea lights and you have a shimmering centerpiece that's perfect for a winter wedding. This looks stunning against dark linens!

Tissue Paper Mason Jars

Here are surprisingly elegant centerpieces that cost under $10. Gather assorted mason jar sizes and wrap them in colored tissue paper, add a few flowers and you have cheap centerpieces. Or skip the decoupage, and fill with bright colored water to match your palette.

Skip the Flowers

Consider using unusual finds for your centerpieces, like peacock feathers or small sculptures, wooden carvings or pretty teacups, vintage books or glass vases full of beach sand, or even interesting rocks.

By choosing things that can simply be arranged, you'll save a ton of time and have unique do-it-yourself centerpieces everyone will remember.

Think Functional

Pillar candles of varying heights give off a romantic light and can easily be set up ahead of time in an environment that's not too drafty. Or, turn to food as an attractive yet functional centerpiece. Consider arrangements of tropical fruits — including star fruit, pomegranates cut in half, melons and citrus — for a lovely summer centerpiece sporting bright colors.

Mix and Match

Scour thrift stores, discount stores and garage sales for intriguing vases to mix and match colorfully. Even drinking glasses could attractively display single stems. Trim with scraps of lace for a sweet vintage touch. Add a few long stems, and you'll have a lovely bohemian look for your reception tables.

Helpful tip: always remember to do a mock-up centerpiece a few weeks before the wedding, so you're sure it lives up to your vision. It's also a smart idea to enlist the help of a few friends if your centerpieces are at all labor-intensive.

With a little creativity and a little effort, you'll have unique wedding reception centerpieces in no time!

My centerpieces for my wedding cost only a few dollars to make. I scoured the Christmas sales and found plain baskets with christmas fabric liner for 90% off at a buck each. I removed the liner, then glued moss around the edge of the basket, with a few delicate hydrangea silk petals. Then, I wrapped the handle in dollar store sheer ribbon. Tied a “kissing ball pomander” on the handle to hang in the middle. (Kissing balls looks like the top of a topiary without the stem or base). I made them out of Michaels crafts styrofoam balls and dollar store silk flowers just hot glued and a ribbon tied on. Lastly, I lined the basket with a linen and put pretty sachet bags filled with lavender buds and small soaps which are the “favors”. Cost of each basket not including favors came to $4.00 each. I saved a ton of money!!! They look amazing. One last idea is take and cut leaves off of a dollar store silk flower boquet and line the bottom of the basket before you put in the favors. You can also pop in a few disposable cameras. The rest of the table will be sprinkled with rose petals. These are perfet as our wedding is up in woods.

I’m getting married next June, and I’m looking for low-budget, but interesting centerpiece ideas. Our colors are light pink and sage green, and I’m going with a garden theme.

I got married in march and had a “daisy” theme..and well it wasn’t a centerpiece but can be used with little changes. When everyone came into the reception hall I had three large vases stuffed filled with ribbons. In front of the vases I had cards one that said A-F, G-M, and N-Z. From the vases I had cut some decent sized branches. I used a die cut and cut out daisies. In the center of the daisies i had a friend write each guests name on them and on the back of the daisy was the table number. and then I punched wholes and threaded with white ribbon. and then hung the daisies from the branches in alphabetical order. but you could always put cool information about the bride & groom on the daisys or just hang them plain.

For a winter themed wedding or party we made ice candle holders. We froze them in a milk carton. First filled the bottom half with ice. Put a glass votive cup on top then filled the carton with water and froze them. You have to put them out just before the party starts, but they look gorgeous. We put them in large shallow bowls and put fake glittery snow around the bowls. Then near the end of the party we used a turkey baster to remove any water. W even put some of them up on glass cake stands so they would vary in height from table to table. Hope this idea is helpful!!

  10. Hi Stacey, check out our peacock theme blog post here and please share any ideas you’ve come up with so far, this theme is getting more popular! Although you have excellent taste for coming up with it so early. :D

Hello, this is for Crystal with the pink, green and creme colors. I am getting married April 26, 2008 and my colors are green with hot pink accents. My flowers are going to be hot pink gerbera daisies. My idea for centerpieces, i am making my own, is get a cheap vase, walmart has them for a buck each, a cheap mirror, walmart again, some clear crystal beads, some cheap candles, a fake pear, lime, whatever color green. I like the pears. Put a handful of clear beads in first, then the pear, then 3 fake or real, i am using fake, of whatever flowers you are using. then fill the vase with water. scatter clear beads on the mirror, and put 3 candles on with them, put the vase on top of the mirror. it is very sheek and classic, but still incorporates the colors. i am not using the pear, because i just liked the flowers, but the pear looks good, if you want to incorporate green. i am using tall skinny beer glasses for my vase, because they can be used again, and it was cheaper, the pear will not fit into that though. if you need anymore help, i have lots of ideas and pictures. good luck and congrats!

i thought this was a cute idea.
skip the bottom row of roses and tie with a ribbon to make it a little cheaper.

  15. Becca

to sarah with the gebera daisies.
maybe you could do a sunset theme. really dramatic with black and then the vibrant colors of sunsets. when you said sunset theme it made me think of it. use all different shades of the reds and pinks you were talking about. have favors with a picture of a sunset on it. or frame pics and set them up on the tables. either of just sunsets or of you as a couple in sunset pics. i dont know it just popped into my head :D

CARINA…a castle – how cool is that! With chocolate & ivory, it would be fun to use candy chess pieces made out of chocolate/white chocolate. (There is a candy mold for chess pieces available.) You could put them on a stick and mix them in a vase of flowers, or… Maybe find a glass cylinders that looks like a castle towers. Use different sizes to hold candles, flowers, chocolates. Just a thought! Good luck!

I saw one of the wedding shows and they used cofee beans in a clear vase. Maybe you can do that with some sort of white bean or something layered in a tall vase.

  22. michele

Why not continue the feather theme with feather boa and then votive candles if it is a winter wedding you could use silver ornaments bigger the better, they could even be suspended from above each table
