Five Easy Do-It-Yourself Wedding Centerpiece Ideas

What's a great way brides are saving money on their wedding budget? Doing their own wedding reception centerpieces, of course.

If you keep it simple, you too can have elegant centerpieces without breaking the bank. Here are five quick ideas to get you started.

Shimmering Silver

This is probably the cheapest do-it-yourself centerpiece of all! Gather up branches, driftwood, leaves or pine cones. Spray them with metallic silver spray paint and arrange in the center of the tables. Add a few tea lights and you have a shimmering centerpiece that's perfect for a winter wedding. This looks stunning against dark linens!

Tissue Paper Mason Jars

Here are surprisingly elegant centerpieces that cost under $10. Gather assorted mason jar sizes and wrap them in colored tissue paper, add a few flowers and you have cheap centerpieces. Or skip the decoupage, and fill with bright colored water to match your palette.

Skip the Flowers

Consider using unusual finds for your centerpieces, like peacock feathers or small sculptures, wooden carvings or pretty teacups, vintage books or glass vases full of beach sand, or even interesting rocks.

By choosing things that can simply be arranged, you'll save a ton of time and have unique do-it-yourself centerpieces everyone will remember.

Think Functional

Pillar candles of varying heights give off a romantic light and can easily be set up ahead of time in an environment that's not too drafty. Or, turn to food as an attractive yet functional centerpiece. Consider arrangements of tropical fruits — including star fruit, pomegranates cut in half, melons and citrus — for a lovely summer centerpiece sporting bright colors.

Mix and Match

Scour thrift stores, discount stores and garage sales for intriguing vases to mix and match colorfully. Even drinking glasses could attractively display single stems. Trim with scraps of lace for a sweet vintage touch. Add a few long stems, and you'll have a lovely bohemian look for your reception tables.

Helpful tip: always remember to do a mock-up centerpiece a few weeks before the wedding, so you're sure it lives up to your vision. It's also a smart idea to enlist the help of a few friends if your centerpieces are at all labor-intensive.

With a little creativity and a little effort, you'll have unique wedding reception centerpieces in no time!

My neice is getting married May 21, 2011 at my house. This has just been decided. She has a very limited budget and we are planning on helping her out as much as possible. She wants an outdoor wedding. We live in the country and our property has rustic (read Very weathered) barns close to the house. Im looking for some ideas on how to welcome in the rustic look of our yard with out placing hey bales around. Any ideas. Unfortunenately the barns are loaded with old farm equipment and we are not able to have the wedding/reception in them.
    Thanks,

i am planning a beach theme wedding for june 2011,

i was wondering what were some ideas for centerpieces , or any other ideas for anything else ? :D

    • sandra

It all depends on where the wedding will take place and the theme of the wedding. Here are some ideas:
If the wedding will be around near the sea you can place glass jars and fill them with sand and then place a candle in them. to add a little color either place a runner on the white table cloth or just around the jar. In addition to the table cloth you may want to double with another color on top and let it drop on white.By doing this you will be able to reuse the glass jars again in future parties and as well the candles. If you can spend a litlle more place tea light candles approx five for 10 people on each table.
You can also either find yourself or by sea shells and place them on the table. It is really cool to place in the runner. star fish are sold esp the white color ones and can either place random on table or make yourself napkin ring from them by attaching ribbon to them,
      2. In glass jars sold everywhere even ikea for cheap place flower from local shop.
one wonderful idea is to plant basiliko which is all green and also works as repellent!!
      3. Glass jar with floating candles
      4. A miniture plant or even baby olive treas either wrapped in white gauze or placed in little metallic pots(ikea has some).

A little note white gauze can be found extremely cheap and works wonders!! It can be placed on trees and hanging, if you have any in the reception area. if outdoors it looks really cool.

I’m getting married Nov. 11, 2011. I really want to plan a fall themed wedding. We have the venue and I need to good do-it-yourself ideas or something that is a resonable price for decorations. I like the fall colors; brown, gold, green, dark red and orange, but how do i pull all those colors together.
So far the venue is kinda on the rustic side and they only give us white linens and a glass mirror and hurriance vase.
    Any good ideas?!? :?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Sarah,
you could always use pumpkins, gourds, etc to pull in the centerpieces, then add fall leave branches in vases, adding come candles in the mix. Another idea is using fall chrysanthemums, they come in assorted colors at a great price. You could always rent brown overlays, then pull in fall florals. It depends on the items you rent( if you choose too). To bring in all those colors fall leaves is top on my list to really make it pop, bring in all the colors, inexpensive( do you have access to real branches-even better). Add the white linens, hurricane vases, have branches in urns around the room, add sprinkling of leaves on tables, etc. Also dont overlook the greatness of fall fruits and veggies..real or fake. urns of grapes, etc. would look perfect. Craft stores sometiems sell bags of mixed fake fruit.

    • Cindy

Sarah, My daughter just got married Nov. 13, 2010 and we did a complete fall wedding too! We were lucky, our venue was also rustic (a country inn that is only used for functions) and they did an amazing job decorating the whole place! Think fall colored mums, huge pumpkins, gourds, hay bales, and even a few scarecrows mixed in here and there! We used mini pumpkins for the seating cards, added ribbon in her color scheme (chocolate brown and wine) to the name tags and tied them onto the stems! Some with very short stems we did have to use a common pin to keep them on. For centerpieces we got these rustic black lanterns from Ikea for $6 each, (they were on the website but there was a store not too far from us so we just went and bought them) placed a candle inside, again in her colors, and used a fall leaf vine that we got at the dollar store to place around the bottom. So for about $8 each we had awesome centerpieces that really went with the theme. The centerpieces were give aways, and the DJ had a great game he played with the guests to see who got to take them home! Guests can use them in their own homes year round by just changing out the candle and using different rings or vines to go with the season. For favors we did a variety of caramel apples, (some with nuts, coconut, mini chocolate chips, and fall colored sprinkles) wrapped each one individually in clear plastic bags (make sure caramel is set first!) tied a thank you tag on with matching ribbon and had one sitting on each place setting. Very time consuming to make depending on how many you would need (we had 185 guests) We ended up making half and then actually buying the rest from a super Wal Mart near us. They had them in single packs for less than a dollar or in a pack of three for less than three dollars. All we did was just rewrap them in our bags! If I knew they were that cheap from the beginning I would have saved myself the time and aggravation and just bought them all! I would suggest checking with the produce manager a few weeks beforehand to make sure he can get them for you, that way you won’t have to scramble around trying to find them. Hope this gave you a few ideas! Have fun and congrats on your up coming wedding!

I was at a fall wedding a few months ago. Sprinlked down the aisle for the bride to walk on were flaa leaves instead of pedals> And pumkins were everywhere. It looked wonderful

  8. Kathryn

Ok…need some help. Originally my wedding was April 2012, but fortunately discovered that my venue is half the price for January 2012! I want to keep my spring colors – dark brown, sage green, ivory – but not sure how to incorporate them into my decor (specifically with the table linens and centerpieces). HELP!

  9. K

I need centerpiece idea’s for a purple ( different shades of purple)and black wedding and they are on a very tight budget. There will be 16 tables with black linens. Plus there is the head table. the budget it only $300.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      K,
Dollartree.com has vases for a buck each. I recommend this type of centerpiece alot for tight budgets. Submerge a single flwoer like a calla lily with a floating candle, finish with colored napkin or printed napkin.
      * like this

Another thing you can do is get glass bowls and have both floating candles and different shades of purple blooms. You could also take cylinder vases of 3 different heights. Fil with water, tint water different shades of purple, add floating candle, or have clear water and purple floating candles then add different shades of rose petals around base of groupings.

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        K,
Another thing you can consider is cylinders with feathers, it looks great. Or you can go nonfloral, like bowls of different shades of grapes, incoporate this into other parts of the decor. You can even buy simple floral glass vases ( the ones used for a single rose at florist shops) and put a different color purple flower in each one, when you group them together it looks elegant and lush.
It is a great and popular concept.

  10. K

hi! my husband and i are renewing our vows this dec. 2011, i want to make it simple as possible, i love to have pastel colors? can suggest what is a good combination? thanks a lot!

    • stacey@favorideas

      Gene,
I would use a pale icy yellow, silver, white. It is perfect for a winter wedding. What does your venue look like?

  12. Pam

My daughter is getting married in June 2011. Her colors are white and black with red for an accent color. She is on a very limited budget so we are trying to think of Centerpieces we can do ourselves. Any help would be greatly appreciated!,

  13. Amanda

Hi! i am getting married April 2012 and our colors are black purple and silver any wedding ideaS? I am on a budget.

  14. Sara

    hi
i am gettin married in june 2012 and my colors are navy blue and lavendar. I really would like a centerpeice with candles and flowers surounding them. My budget is tight. Have any ideas?

  15. Latoya

I am getting married on November 19, 2011 on the beach in Mexico. My colors are coral, pastel green and canary yellow. I am looking for bouquet ideas for bridesmaids and bride. ( something affordable please… on a budget)

  16. Ashley

HI, I am getting married in May 2012. My colors are a dark dark plum purple, ivory and grass green. I would like to make my own centerpieces and am on a tight budget. I have a vision of ivory table cloths on rectanugular tables and I am wanting to keep a “spring” theme so I was thinking centerpieces with potted grass or limes but would also like to tie in the purple. Any ideas?

  17. Kim

My wedding colors are purple and white and I love purple hydrangeas and plan to DIY the flowers using silk with purple hydrangea and white roses. I also love topiaries, but am on a tight budget of 2K! YIKES! I love lush floral and candlelight…I’m just a romantic dreamy girl! Any suggestions for centerpieces that won’t break my piggy-bank?!
    Thanks!

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Kim,
        * real wedding

If using silk flowers for submerged idea then test it to make sure the color doesnt bleed and underwater water will magnify frayed edges etc. With a test run you can see if you like the idea or not. I love the pic posted, it looks seriously romantic and simple elegance!! The white hydrangea pic has the white roses that could easily be added in between the purple hydrageas, it would add a lush look with minimal cost. do a test run you may only need 2 hydrangea per container. Dollartree.com ( vases and containters) have cylinders etc. for just a dollar!!

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Kim,
Oh yes!! If you use this pic make use to add the ribbon cause it will add even more oomph to the tables!! If you have round tables just have a mini vase of white roses with some votives and purple hydrangeas. Still giving hte look fo more florals, and make sure to add water to the containers for a “real” floral effect.

    • Summer

A very romantic centerpiece could be a small glass circular or square bowl with water and floating candles. Dye the water with food coloring into a purple and put gems in the bottom, then sprinkle silk white rose petals on top. Then surround this with votives of different heights and scatter more gems around the center of the table. Very nice effect in low light!

  18. Chasidy NB

    :D Hi.
I am getting marred in September 2011 and Our colors are Brown and turquoise.. I am also gonna have long rectangular tables and was wondering what would be really nice and still easy to do and budget friendly at the same time.
    Thanks ;)

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Chasidy NB,
What color will your linens etc. be? Something like this with brown napkins and some candles would work and be sooooo budget friendly!!!
      * isnt it pretty
Just fill up the ceiling with paper lanterns and voila!!
      * very diy and budget friendly ( vases and cylinders for a buck at dollartree.com)

      • Chasidy NB

YOU are AMAZING. I love them. All of them. I was kinda in my head thinking of doing Brown Linens with alot more of the turquoise on the centerpeices but… What you gave me to work with is sooo great.
        Thanks so much.

      • Chasidy NB

I have been looking for easy to mess with flower centerpieces. I have been kinda thinking that hydrangeas… are a flower centerpiece that I can’t mess up. Is there a good place to get them at a good price. Below is a picture of the flowers that I like.. and I can’t find them ANYWHERE!

Is it okay to have different flowers on the tables than the ones that the bridesmaids hold? :?

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Chasidy,
Try fiftyflowers.com they are a great reasonable place to buy flowers in bulk, offer care tips, and help tremendously!! They also have the dark blue tinted ones like are shown in the pic.

Of course! The bridesmaids dont have to match just compliment.
          * website

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Chasidy,
Actually a few hydrangeas submerged in cylinders with floating candles would be beautiful. Or a grouping of candles with sprigs of the hydrangeas tucked in and around base.

  19. Moriah

Hi! I’m getting married next fall. Either late September or early October. My colors are black and white. I think these two colors look very elegant. I need help with an accent color!!! Thank you!!!!

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Moriah,
What about adding burgundy or a shade of red? What about your location what colors are in the decor?

    • Tasha

      HI Moriah,
Congrat to you! I think for a fall wedding, think of the changing of the leaves and all the colors. Greens, yellows, oranges, red, browns; all these colors would work with black & white. I would have the entire wedding party in b&w and use flowers, jewelry, shoes, sashes, etc. to add color, At the reception, I would again keep it subtle: adding a think band of ribbon across the tables like runners, add ribbon to candle holders, colored water in different size vases with white floating candles and black ribbon on the outside would be wonderful. Use your accent for favor boxes on the tables for another pop of color. Try dollartree.com, efavormart.com, http://www.theribbonretreat.com. Hope these ideas help you a bit, and congrats again.

  20. Chelsea

Hi! I’m getting married on Feb. 12, 2011 and I have no idea on centerpieces for the reception tables! Please help! I want something classy, yet cheap. I’m on a strict budget! My wedding colors are purple & silver! Thank you! :)

  22. Susan

Hi im getting married july, 09 2011 and my colors are yellow, white and silver… ANY IDEAS??? I am looking for fancy but modern!!!

  23. Rebecca

    Hi

I came across this site as my partner and I are hunting for DIY table centrepieces as we’re on a budget.
We’re getting married in Feb, end of Summer in New Zealand
Our colour theme is purple, black and white.
Just wondering if you could give us more ideas to do with our colour scheme and we’re hoping to use candles and/or lisianthus flowers and/or mirrors
    Any suggestions?

  24. Janna

I am getting married on 09/10/11 and am having trouble figuring out a colour??I really like green…also help with flowers and centerpieces would be greatly appreciated!
Thought i had soo much planned but I am stressing!!!

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Janna,
What are your venue colors? green is a great color to use, so versatile. What shade of green do you like? Have you thought about using a shade of purple with the green? white and green is amazing too, as champagne and green or copper and green.

      • Janna

Hi our venue has brick walls and they are a light burgandy and grey..i was thinking of a darker green. THought about prple put our friends are getting married in july and that is there colour !Thank you!

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Janna,
I should have asked. My apologies but do you have a link or pic? I ned to take a closer look. I need to visualize how the green is gonna look. Green looks amazing but I don’t want the green and burgandy to come across holidayish.

        • Janna

Hi Sorry i don’t have a picture. AS for the brick it is a lighter burgandy so i don;t think it will look holidayish but will check!!
what do you suggest with the Green???

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Janna,
I found a loft with burgundy/grey brick walls. I think if you go with a simple green and champagne/ivory or creamy white it would look amazing. And not holidayish at all! Use mainly all green though. You coudl even do shades of green. Have you thought about using a simple grey/platinum and darker green? it looks good!
          * like here

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Janna
The decor here is spectacular! And perfect for your wedidng date and I am thinking you have a lofty style venue, check out the green/burgundy tinge hydrangeas!* love this

        • Janna

          Stacey,

Thank you soo much for your help and yes i totally was thinking grey as well …..
what about centerpieces do you have any ideas??

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Janna,
I was actually thinking centerpieces like the ones in the last link I gave you. Something a bit rustic elegance. It would go so beautifully, to incorporate the fruits, hydrangea, grapevine, and some votives or floating candles. Actually these centerpieces could be cost effective as well. or you could actually look into jeweled fruit like at a craft store. If you want more simple use floating candles with tucks of the green hydrangea tinged with burgundy.

  25. Candice

    hi
I’m getting married on 4 Dec 2010, so it’s in 2 weeks time. The ceremony and reception are going to be outside. I’m getting married in Cape Town, South Africa so it’s summer here at the moment. My colours are apple green and chocolate brown with just a hint of orange. And my table decor at the moment are cream tablecloths, brown runners, a round mirror in the centre of the table with a spaghetti vase on topt with green apples in and then I’m going to put 4 gel candles around the vase and throw rose petals on the tables. But now I don’t know what colour rose petals to choose and isn’t the centrepieces too plain or is there something missing that I can add? I’m on a tight budget so is there anything I can put on the table to make it more “Full”?

And there are also a different picture that was taken on different occasions of me and hubby-to-be on each table. This is just to give you a picture of how the centre of my table will look. Can you pleassse help!!

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Candice,
It sounds nice. 1)Just amp it up with fresh greenery around base, along with the votives. Then add a orange rose to each place setting. This will make it more lush. 2)Still using rose petals? I would use a mix of pale orange and white among the votives. Something like the pic would work too., using ribbon to wrap around the vase. 3) Also floating the apples would be nice with a floating candle, scatter rose petals and votives, still securing creamy orange ribbon around vase, then add orange rose to each setting with the orange rose petals. :D

    Natalie,,,,AGAIN

Im getting married in July 09, 2011 and my colors were brown and yellow but now i changed my mind they are yellow, silver and white. I changed my colors because after seeing how the table covers were going to be white or ivory it threw off the combination  so i am having white table and chair covers with yellow or silver bows and a runner of either yellow or silver depending of the centerpiece. So does anyone have any ideas for silver??? I know with yellow i can use lemons in many ways.
    Thank you
Natalie (change my colors) :?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Natalie,
Actually if were me, I would let the silver shine in the silverware, silver plate chargers, then do a great program or place setting card with silver writing. It would pull it in nicely. ;)
I do love the cylinders with lemons with this type setting.
      * here are some other ideas

      Natalie,
      * some pics

I googled DIY wedding and it showed tons of links. Also DIY bride ( more great links).
I remembered this article a while back. It is for an (unwedding) but has some great ideas and pics. I could see lemons laid out on the table( like in pic) with cylinders of coffee beans and candles. Carry the lemon or a pic of a coffee bean branch on your programs and invites. Has that loft appeal.

    • Hi Natalie… I was thinking about this all night,.. Which scent do you prefer… lemons or coffee? Im not sure what lemon infused coffee would smell like…I would try it first… If you prefer lemon, get some coffee colored ribbon and tie it around the lemon in a bow securing it with pearlesent pins. Pile a few in a pretty vase with the ribon bows showing… If you prefer the smell of coffe, get some pretty vases, fill part way with coffee beans and nestle candles in it,.. the heat will give off the scent of the coffee beans,.. tie vase with a pretty yellow bow… I am a DIY consultant for brides… if you would like to get a hold of me, my email is: thecreativeknott@live.com
      Congratulations!!!

      • Natalie

I honestly like both sents. I love the idea of a ribbon around the lemon. Thank you i will try that. Of course how could of i not though of candles with the coffe beans, that will make the sent so much stronger. Thank you so much for your help. NATALIE :D Such a relief to have some more ideas!!!!!!!

  29. Shannon

Im getting married on 9/10/11 and my colors are sage green and chocolate brown… Its an outdoor wedding at my uncle’s house and i have a lot of people coming (400) to be exact .. I have no ideas of what to do for my centerpieces and im on a pretty tight budget.. Our theme is an irish theme as well as a feel of romantic…Please help im soo lost ????

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Shannon,
Ireland known for their lush greenery. Why not have fresh clipped greenery in glass containers with green ribbon tied around middle and add a irish charm such as a shamrock, claddaugh or even a a celtic knot.
      * look at this

Another thing you could do is the greenery but add framed pics of Ireland and/or historical facts among the centerpieces. Even name each table after a place in Ireland. Guests would love it, if they have never been there. Adding candles will give romantic ambiance.

    • rose

1st off have to say congrats…I’m getting married on the same day..I was 2 looking for center piece ideas. So far I have clear vases that I bought at the dollar store and I thought about coffee beans other then that Im stuck. I’m trying to stay inexpensive, but maybe that will help you with some sort of an idea..possible candle with grean ribbon and what ever the irish flower is. But good luck and congrats again :D

      • adriane

im getting married on 10-08-11 and the coffee bean idea is so cute! i got the idea from a magazine i have seen where candles are placed in the vase and the coffee beans are then poured in. i am using the coffee bean centerpieces as “side” centerpieces with flour centerpieces in the middle very inexpensive and the beans are nicely iluminated when the candles are lit

    • Natalie

      Shannon Congratz!!!
You are getting married a day after me wow who would of known… So i was thinking maybe you should have the irish hat on every other table that would bring the theme of irish to live. I have seen them at party stores and at the dollar store. You should go buy things right after st. patricks day things will be super cheap, it is in march 17 so its before your wedding. Im sure you will get a lot of final touches to your wedding.
      Hope this helps natalie.
