A Non-Traditional Wedding (It’s All in the Details)
Traditional? Not you. That’s why you’re searching for some non-traditional ideas for your upcoming wedding. With a little ingenuity and some silk wedding flowers, you can have the non-traditional wedding of your dreams.
If you’ve never been big on wedding bouquets, how about having your bridesmaids and maid-of-honor carry small handbags that covered in silk flowers? Each attendant can wear a different color, and carry a handbag personalized just for them. Get your glue gun out and attach the silk flower heads to the individual purses to match the gowns’ color and style. This rainbow of colors will help ensure a bright beginning for you and your groom!

If you’re planning on having little girls in your wedding, but don’t like the idea of “flower girls,” try making floral garlands for them to carry. Simply cover birch vines with silk flowers that match or complement the flowers your bridesmaids are carrying, then have your two or three young attendants carry the garland in tandem. This won’t only look adorable (get ready for the oohs and ahhs), it’s also a clever way of keeping the girls together.
As the bride, if you don’t want to carry a traditional cascading bridal bouquet, or even a hand-tied bridal bouquet, consider walking down the aisle with a hoop made of vine and strung with various flowers. The hoop is carried like a tambourine.
Another gorgeous option is the pomander, a Styrofoam ball covered in lace or tulle. Silk flower heads are embedded in the foam, and the lightweight result simply hangs from the wrist.
If you’ve lost someone special to you, such as a grandmother or even your mother, consider carrying something of theirs: such as their prayer book garnished with their favorite flowers. This would be a lovely way to pay tribute to an important missing guest.
In lieu of corsages, floral bracelets can be fashioned like small garlands with silk wedding flowers woven in. These not only would look lovely, but they would also give your wedding yet another non-traditional flavor.
But you don’t have to use flowers to make a visual splash. If your wedding’s in the autumn, how about decorating with pumpkins and wheat instead of the traditional roses and ivy? Christmas weddings can include strands of twinkle lights, and plenty of pine and holly. Decorated boxwood Christmas “trees” make stunning yuletide centerpieces at each table. Beautiful glass ornaments are gorgeous not only in the arrangements, but also in the bouquets — and you can give each guest one as a favor, too. For a personal touch, inscribe the date on your ornaments as a reminder of this special day.
As for summer weddings, they call for a lush abundance of flowers. Try crafting floral halos can be crafted for the young girls in the wedding. Having a beach theme? In lieu of flowers, let your young attendants carry mini wind chimes to add some harmonious tones to the day.
If you want non-traditional, you have to start thinking outside of the box. And once you’re outside of the box, the sky’s the limit!

I’ll be getting married sometime late October and we’ll be having a nontraditional wedding. I’m having such a hard time trying to find a dress that fits my size, personality, and style. I’m 5′1″ and very petite which makes it even harder. Any hints as to where I could find or even have a dress made for me?
