Red, White & Blue: A Rainbow Tour of Wedding Gowns

We've come a long way since Queen Victoria launched the craze for white weddings. Color's creeping into the gowns of even the most demure brides, in the form of bright blue sashes or royal red trim, crisp black embroidery or even a dress made entirely from flame-red satin.

And yet even today, when it comes time to select the perfect color for your wedding dress, you'll probably find your decision rests not only on your personal preferences, but the perceptions of your nearest and dearest.

Plenty of colors haven't made much of a splash in today's pool of bridal possibilities — not because they lack charm, but because they come loaded with certain unsavory meanings.

Colored Wedding Gowns

Marry in Gray? (Probably) No Way

For example, you won't find many brides marrying in gray, no matter how well it sets off their olive skin or blue eyes. The reason? Its historical association with the hoi polloi. In Victorian novels, for example, a governess or house servant would typically dress in gray — not the image most brides want to evoke at their gala event.

It's Okay to Think Pink

Other colors have recently crept onto the list, despite being "beyond the pale" not long ago. Pink was always a great favorite, but until recently it seemed a little too frivolous and girlish for wedding. Maybe a pink sash or a bit of trim was all right, but a pink gown?

Not long ago, you might get hit with a few churlish Barbie comments if you donned one. But thanks to the power of televised celebrity weddings, it's now perfectly safe to embrace your not-so-inner pinkophile, even on your wedding day.

Colored Wedding Gowns

Raving for Red

Red recently overcame a similar prejudice, having long been associated with wanton women. But the color's gaining steam throughout Europe and you just might see a red gown at a second, Valentine or Christmas wedding, making for a dramatic entrance.

Colored Wedding Gowns

Enter the Earth Tones: Brown and Green

Now that Celtic weddings are a permanent part of the theme landscape, we're seeing more "nature colors" turn up in gowns: even brown is making an appearance at some rustic, woodsy or mystic weddings. You'd be far more likely to see a brown bride somewhere in Greenwich Village (or even the wide-open Rockies) than the Upper East Side ... though chocolate browns and mochas are current power colors when it comes to bridesmaids' attire.

Another attractive hue — one in the past given even a wider berth than red — is green. Plenty of lore associates green with the fairies, serpents, and even more questionable behaviors and personalities. In fact, the fairies were said to take offense if you donned their signature color on your wedding day, though why they'd object isn't easy to understand (but then, they never were a reasonable lot).

At any rate, the occasional modern bride sees green as the color of growth and connectedness and wears it to her wedding, all the while thumbing her nose at the fairies.

Colored Wedding Gowns

Bridal in Blue

On the other hand, history shows some colors were a big hit with brides, and one of them was blue.

Apart from blue's association with the Virgin Mary and its implication that the bride was "all she should be," blue also involved a satisfaction-guaranteed clause concerning the fiancé. In short, according to legend, a bride in blue was sure to enjoy a faithful husband 'til death did them part. What more could you ask for?

I am trying to find out who makes the red and white wedding dress that is pictured in the Photo of the three red dresses under the “Raving For Red” title on this web page (It is the dress pictured on the far right, where you can only see the back of the corsette). It is the one that has Red with white embroidery and white with red embroidery alternating. The embroidery appears to be of vines or leaves. I cannot find any info. on the dress but this is exactly what I am looking for. Any help would be fabulous!

sarah,
i also searched thru all my history back 3 weeks and found the board but nada. i even called the company about the board, to find some info, nothing. i just know i read it is a one of a kind dress, passed down or second hand. :meh: it is beautiful!! i wish i could of found it!! one idea is to buy a tiered dress without lace on edge and hire a seamstress to add eyelet lace on edge. if you cant find tiered just make sure you find a full skirt that has teh slight folds just like a gypsy skirt. and add eyelet at bottom in tiers. if you can, add to bodice. i do wish you the best of luck!! check out second hand stores, i have seen similar dresses there for a fraction of the price! plus the best thing about these dresses is altering it for your style!!
here is a dress by melissa sweet…

I am looking for the dress shown on this website actually. It was listed on the cover of my bridal magazine and I fell in love with it. THey have no designer information for the dress unfortunately. I have looked all over for this dress and happened to see it on this website but unfortunately again there is no designer listed. SO if anyone knows any info it is greatly appreciated. I am referring to the ivory and brown colored dress. The model is standing with her back towards the camera. The picture is next to two other dresses that are green and brown colored. I really really want to know the designer of this dress so I can hopefully get some information on it. Please if anyone knows anything please send some info!!!!

patricia, also for a more budget approach and easier to find. get a red or black gown and add the opposite color gothic wedding jewelry. also think about a shawl like black on red dress or vice versa. a black choker would be perfect with black earrings and a black shawl secured with a gothic clasp and black shoes.

i tried to find pics but couldnt. put your bm in brown or a neutral color like gold or beige. check it out on their skintones. with a bold color like your dress they definitely need to be neutral. even look for a rose beige. that is a fab color!!! or champagne even champagne rose which is the pink beige i am talking about. See Wedding Colors (earthy colors)

dont underestimate a deep shade of pink too, more on the fall side of pink like found in fall leaves, it also has that rose shade to it. like below… (mixed calla lily bouquet) this is the rose shade i mean. :D
also google image autumn wedding bouquet and fall wedding bouquet for pics.

Hi Tori: Do you mean you want a baby blue bridal gown? I have seen red and black, but not blue. At this late date, you will not be able to order anything. But, why don’t you go to a bridal store and look at all the bridesmaids/prom dresses? Maybe you will be able to find something. There are so many nice gowns now that CAN be used as wedding gowns. I hope you find what you are looking for! Congratulations!:D

I want to know would it look tacky to have a rainbow of bridesmaid dresses for a christmas wedding. For instance, one girl in red, one in green, one in purple and one in blue.
