How to Choose the Right Wedding Dress Style for Your Body Type

Everyone thinks they know how to choose a wedding gown. What most women don’t realize is fabrics, style and measurements can influence the style of wedding dress that best complements a particular body type.

This article will help you choose the right wedding dress style for your own body shape.

The Full-Figured Bride

If you’re a full-figured woman, the best silhouette is the A-line style. A-line style lengthens the whole body without drawing attention to your waistline. The empire waist is another good choice. The empire is narrowest just below the bust, which conceals your waist and hips.

Many plus-sized girls tend to purchase wedding gowns that cover a lot of skin. If religion isn’t an issue, don’t be afraid to show some skin. Skin is sexy, and showing your arms and neckline can often make you appear slimmer.

Deep V-necks and scoop necks flatter curvy figures, and always look best on full-figured women.

The Petite Bride

A-line wedding dresses are also flattering on petite women. As we stated earlier, this style lengthens the body. Sheaths seem to shorten a small body even more, so petite women should avoid sheath-style wedding dresses. Also steer clear of very full skirts, which will make you look ‘bottom heavy.’ You want to keep your wedding dress proportionate to your body.

Be careful with strapless gowns — a petite woman may have to lift her arms to reach up to her new husband (can you say ‘wardrobe malfunction’?). A cap sleeve gives the feeling of a strapless gown, and also serves the practical purpose of holding the gown in place.

The Large-Busted Bride

Off-the-shoulder gowns look wonderful on a full bust. It draws our attention upward, emphasizes the shoulders and minimizes the chest. Keep your skirt narrow. Wearing a full skirt will make you look large both on top and bottom.

The Bottom-Heavy Bride

Women who are larger through their hips and buttocks should look for a wedding dress that focuses on their upper body — preferably with a full skirt.

Show off your arms, back and bustline.

A corset-style bodice with lacing will highlight your upper body. We want to draw attention away from your hips. Avoid pleats or gathered fabric around the waist. An A-line skirted wedding dress always works the best for this body type.

    Hi Stacey,

I’m 5’6 and broad built. I’ve attached a picture of myself and also the dress i intend wearing. Can you please let me know if this is a good option given my body type? I’m apple shaped as you tell from the picture. i really like the dress design and i also wanna know if i wear a three tier or layered veil, will it help in hiding my bulky arms? ;)

    Cheers..ramya..

    • Stacey@Favor Ideas

      Ramya,
Beautiful dress. If you are concerned about your arms, you can attach lace sleeves ( not cap they would enchance full arms). Choose a wrap, actually halter straps can look good. With the veil it would look good but if your using it to cover your arms you may figit with the veil constantly pullin it over your arms. I would think about a lace sleeve or find a similar dress with sleeves. Also something without alot of ruching inthe bust area will help the upper body. I am concerned it may draw attention to the area your concerned about. :meh: Look for a similar style with the wrap( would be very flattering) with sleeves. There are some gorgeous dresses out there with sleeves! :D
      * take a look

Avoid loose sleeves they also enhance fuller arms. If you choose a bolero make sure the sleeves are not to tight or alot of embellishment. If you do choose spaghetti straps or halter make sure they are thicker straps. avoid poufy sleeves. I mentioned cap sleeves cause most of those cut into the fullest part of the arm. Again some can work but it has to be the “right” shape.

      * great tips here

I am getting married on 5-28-11. Please look at the attached photos and give me your opinion of which dress looks best on my body type or if I need to keep looking. I am 5’6″ and am pear shaped. If you have any ideas please let me know.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Susan,
I actually think no. 3 works well for you. It flatters your body. The split front is beautiful. Have I talked to you before? Can I get a doublecheck on your measurements? Cause even though your in a wedding dress you dont appear pear shaped. Pear shaped body shapes are larger on bottom and small upper body. It is hard to tell but you appear to be either inverted triangle/hourglass.

      • Susan

No we have not spoken before. I believe that you are right. I may be Hourglass shaped and not pear. My shoulders and hips are about the same and my waist is smaller. My measurements are 46″ bust 43″ waist 51″ hips. I saw the comments by Becky and Sonja about dress 1, this was my first pick. I tried on dress in pic 3 (pic 2 is back of pic 3 dress) for my mother. Dress 3 is the one we purchased but David’s Bridal said since we have not made alterations yet I can still change my mind. I keep looking at the pictures and something in me just keep going to pic 1. It just seems more flowing. Please give me your opinion now that you have my measurements.

        • Stacey@Favor Ideas

          Susan,
Usually a hourglass body shape should not wear a empire, because it makes the body shape look disproportioned. It conceals the curve of the waist which a hourglass needs and a empire can cover that making the waist appear short. That was the reason behind my choice. I didnt think pic 2 flattered you and now that I know it is the back I do agree with the others about dress 1.I want you to be very happy with your dream dress and look beautiful!! If you love the chiffon look at something like the pic here and try it on. It will elongnate the torso and still give you the soft look like dress 1.
          * Look here
Forgot to mention you do fall into the pear and hourglass measurements. That is why it threw me off so much. I do agree the other girls are right dress 1 does look beautiful but if you combined the 2 dresses look for the one made out of chiffon with a more slim aline, no split front, strapless( I do like that on you or even a v neck). Especially if it cinches your waist like the 3rd pic. Again that is what caught my eye. I thought it gave a nice curve to your waist which is beneficial to a hourglass. :D
          * example

    • Becky

I think the one on the left looks best. The flowing bottom really suits you. The one of the right is nice, but the way it draws your eye up the middle isn’t as flattering as the first dress. Also, the bottom of the skirt on the dress on the right comes to a definite stopping point, whereas the dress on the left is more free-flowing, which therefore places less emphasis on your width.

      • Sonja

I also think the left dress looks better on you. Becky is correct about how the middle of the skirt is not as flattering as the eye stops instead of continuing.

    • kristen

the one with the empire waist is very flattering on you : ) It slims you at right below the bust!! You will be a beautiful bride : )

    • Carolyn

I love the Empire waist dress. It flows gentlely. The other looks too stiff. Best of luck to you…

  3. Sonja

Here are a few dresses I like. Would one or the other look better on me? We are going for an informal ceremony with our 2 teenage kids and my mother-in-law. My husband is planning on wearing a white shirt and khaki slacks and so will my son we all are going to be barefoot. I’m thinking my daughter and mother-in-law will be in a casual white or ivory summer dress. What are your thoughts?

  4. Sonja

    Hello,

My husband and I are renewing our vows this November on the beach in Hawaii. I’m wanting to purchase a dress online, but nervous of doing so because of the possibility of the dress not looking the best with my body type. I have tried on a few dresses and it seems like the strapless empire waist in chiffon looked better than most. I’m 41 years old and my measurements are Shoulders 44, Bust 43, Waist 37, and Hips 42 1/2. I am 5’4″ so fall in the petite category. Would you let me know your opinion of the types of dresses I should be looking for?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Sonja,
Could you post a pic so I could see your body shape? Thanks!!

      • Sonja

Sure, here are two photos of me.

        • Stacey@Favor Ideas

          Sonja,
You have a rectangular body shape. Your measurements are close to each other.
          * check out the pic here
          * some dress examples
Necklines that flatter slightly broader shoulders are v neck, scoop, halter, square, and sweetheart.

V neck is on my top list. It gives broader shoulders a more narrow appearance. Asymmetrical ( pic 2) is not the best choice for broad shoulders because it will bring attention to them. If you got a vneck chiffon gown it would have the flow like inthe pics you posted. The first dress with the wrap effect would defien the waist and I love the slight fullness of the skirt which will give balance. It doesnt have to much embellishment so it wont overwhelm a petite height.

          * something along this line would be beautiful on you.
          * here is the back of that dress
          * here are some more styles, also look at inverted triangle because of he necklines. You will find alot of similar dresses in both of these categories. So it shouldnt confuse. I would go to a bridal shop and try on a similar dress like I posted and see how it suits. Sometimes dresses can be surprising.

  5. LYNND

The Large-Busted Bride: “Off-the-shoulder gowns look wonderful on a full bust. It draws our attention upward, emphasizes the shoulders and minimizes the chest. Keep your skirt narrow. Wearing a full skirt will make you look large both on top and bottom.”

Again, I have to disagree with this blanket advice given my art background.

Women who can make the look work may include:

    — women with very narrow shoulders who want to bring balance to the shoulders by directing the eye up and out to either side (the shoulders forming the top of a “T”).
    — long torso and average-to-tall ladies would look best in an off-the-shoulder or sleeveless style because it may help bring the proportion of skirt-to-bodice back in proportion.

    On the other hand…

    — A bride with a big bust AND a short torso (high waist) may appear squat in appearance if she drops the top of the dress down off the shoulders or lower (as would be the case with strapless/sleeveless).
    — A bride with long legs but a very short torso might even WANT to have sleeves or straps rise up and over the shoulder to help balance and elongate the upper half. If the bodice stops below or off the shoulder the torso looks shorter, and the shorter the upper half looks the longer the bottom half. It all depends on the torso-to-leg proportions — which this article doesn’t touch upon in the least. (But you can read it here not from a salesperson’s point of view, but from someone with a figure drawing background.)

Likewise, it is my opinion that a bride with a LONG neck can wear a higher-cut dress, whereas women with very short necks look better in halter styles or narrow V-necks to create the illusion of a longer neckline.

On the flip side, brides with SHORT necks paired to strapless/sleeveless gowns may give the illusion that the shoulders are hiking up toward the ears, simply because so much shoulder is exposed relative to so little neck when wearing an off-the-shoulder or strapless/sleeveless gown. The illusion of a very short neck can also stem from severe undergarments that push everything up toward the chin and/or a high neckline on the bodice. Keep in mind, however, that what’s “bad” for a short-necked bride is perfect for one who wants to minimize a longer-than-average neck. Those bras that push everything up toward the face will help balance everything out if one’s neck is long but the torso is shorter than average.

The solution for brides who have very short necks is to carefully choose the undergarments to avoid the “push up” effect OR to choose something that features a narrow but plunging neckline (V-cut, low sweetheart style). In this case, the off-the-shoulder look, IMHO, probably suits taller women who are trying to minimize the distance the eye travels up the fabric across an overly-long upper body. Not to discourage ALL off-the-shoulder gowns, however: The great thing about an off-the-shoulder design, IMHO, is that it can help create a dramatic hour-glass illusion when paired to an A-line skirt. Broad shouldered women who don’t want to wear an A-line gown probably should skip the off-the-shoulder look, however, because it will only emphasize the width of the shoulders (that “T” I was talking about is great for women with rounded or small shoulders — not so great on women who have broad or angular shoulders).

If you’re keeping up with all I’ve written thus far, you’re already leaps and bounds beyond the advice given in this article — and probably just about anywhere else online. This website doesn’t offer bad advice — it’s just a little too vague. Specific examples help to complete the picture. Consequently, I hope this post helps someone shop easier, as a result. Just remember: The “rules” (advice) are only intended for those who care. If you don’t try on many dresses and decide to shop online, follow this advice. If, on the other hand, you’ve tried on a dress that supposedly isn’t right for your figure and you think you look smokin’ hot in it, go for it! It’s your Special Day and YOUR business!

  6. LYNND

I agree with the gist of the advice here, but not all of it.

Let’s take the “Bottom Heavy Bride” (aka Pear Shape). The article says: “Avoid pleats or gathered fabric around the waist. An A-line skirted wedding dress always works the best for this body type.”

My take: Most women who carry their weight on the lower half of the body may actually benefit from a sash or some LIGHT rushing or gathering. This can conceal the “muffin top” appearance that is most often seen in street clothes as a roll of fat riding just above low-rise jeans.

I DO agree that women who are pear shapes are flattered most by an A-line skirt, but I do NOT agree that you can’t have anything around the waist. Unless the alterations are top notch or the waist on the dress happens to sit higher — as would be the case with an Empire Waist — taking the article’s advice and bypassing a wedding dress that has some detailing around the waistline may be a bad idea. On TLC’s “What Not To Wear” you see the hosts recommend dresses that have a little more complexity to the fabric at the waistline to accentuate and conceal at the same time. It’s the chunky or stiff fabrics at the waistline that ANY bride, regardless of body type, will want to avoid at the narrowest point on the torso. (Speaking as someone who studied art & design.)

Ladies, the important thing is to wear whatever makes you feel gorgeous. The only truly tacky thing to avoid is to schedule a church wedding only to wear a dress that leaves nothing to the imagination. And therein lies my next point of disagreement: I don’t think covering skin is *just* for religious brides. It’s PERFECTLY okay to have a sleeve to conceal less-than-toned arms, especially if you have scars or tattoos you want to cover up and/or are an older bride. The only women who might wish to avoid sleeves on their wedding dress, in my opinion, are very angular body types with shoulders that are broader than their hips (inverted pyramid shape).

The idea that a dress with sleeves is inherently less sexy is flawed for other reasons, too. Women can compensate for covering more arm by having a more creative or unusual neckline (sweetheart, V-neck, scoop neck, etc.). By contrast, your average sleeveless and strapless gown cuts straight across the bust like a tube top. It’s not the most imaginative or bust-flattering cut, but it’s the tradeoff you find on many bridal dresses because the sleeves or straps aren’t there to help hold the gown in place. The other reason I would ignore the “sleeves are out” mantra is because your typical sleeveless/strapless gown, if the fit isn’t spot on, can make women who are big/busty on top look as if they have been “poured” into the dress. This can sometimes even happen to far skinnier gals in the event the undergarments are pushing everything up so high that the skin right beneath the arm pits starts to overflow the top of the bodice. By contrast, dresses with sleeves are a bit more forgiving in this regard, even if the sleeves are just caps or sheer sleeves. That is because the presence of ANY sleeve, no matter how small, can detract from or reduce the squeezed-in effect. The fact that bridal salons don’t suggest gowns with sleeves is not because they look bad but simply because they don’t have many in stock. (Even in the Fall or Winter when they ought to due to the season.)

Once upon a time there were ALL kinds of bridal gowns for ALL kinds of brides. Today, however, it’s a case of semi/formal fashion conformity at it’s worst. Everyone at every price point pretty much carries variations on the same cut and overall style, and if you look too long and hard for your gown it can even feel as if once you have “seen one” you’ve “seen them all”. Wedding dress fatigue is due to the sheer repetition of the styling. Just look at some of the classic Hollywood movies featuring all the bombshells of times past. You can see that there were MANY nice dresses that you can’t find today if you wanted to, even in a high-end salon. They don’t even try to update the look. The vast majority of bridal boutiques offer the more inexpensive styles to manufacture — even though you may be paying far more for the label — and most are without sleeves because bridal gowns are much easier to fit a variety of women without them. One store owner told me flat out that there are just too many arm sizes for manufacturers to bother producing them.

Designers need to offer more choices. There is no wrong dress, but there are some people who can pull off a look better than others. That’s my 2¢, for what it is worth.

Hi! I am so glad I found this site. I tried on some dresses today and would love your opinion!!! Please go to the link:
    http://s25.photobucket.com/albums/c73/mangoflavorpunk/dresses/

and use the word wedding as the password.

The dresses in this album are my favourite from the day. The last one is the only “big” dress I tried on, it was in a size too big so the corset wouldn’t tighten anymore so imagine it more like the tightness of the other dresses around the waist. Let me know your honest opinion… I can take it! :)

    • Stacey@Favor Ideas

      Dawn,
Number 5 and 6 pic are the same dress? Is number 7? I love all 3 of these pics and number 7 pic was my favorite. That is the one I would pick( my mom wanted to see and fell in love with 5, 6, and 7) Pic 7 also being her fave. We both agree you look so beautiful in that dress, very flattering for your figure. The other dresses were too bulky and didn’t flatter. 2out of 9 pic- fit added width to your shoulders. 3 out of 9- the ruching on the bust area didnt accentuate curves. 4 out of 9- the same/the cut appeared to big for your frame. 8 and 9 pics- too bulky and ornate added width to frame.
I hope this helps. :D Your gonna make a beautiful bride!! :D

      • Dawn

Yes, those 3 pictures are of the same dress. I really appreciate your comments, I never noticed some of these things until you pointed them out. :) This has definitely helped me with my decision!! I’m going back this week to try on that dress again for my mom and sister, I think they will both agree it’s the best one for me. Thank you so much!!

    Hi Stacey,

Here is a pic of the dress I was thinking of getting for my September outside wedding. What do you think??

    thanks,
    Lisa

    • Stacey@Favor Ideas

      Lisa,
That dress is stunning. It has all the main embellishment in the waist/hip area. Nice full skirt will give balance, simple line for petite height. I think it would be beautiful!

  9. lisa jackman

    hello,

which dress do you think would be right for me. I am 5 1/2, 118 lbs., 36DD, 27 waist, 37 hips. Attached is a photo.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

    • Stacey@Favor Ideas

      Lisa,
You are an inverted triangle. Meaning your shoulders are slightly broader and your hips are narrower. This article will give lots of choices in dress styles as well as tips. I love these sites because it actually gives examples of the dress styles.

Stick with something without alot of embellishments, it will overwhelm your petite height/frame. Do look for a fuller skirt that will add balance. keep any embellishments on the skirt area.

I’m planning the wedding in october 2010. I’m 5’15” tall and weight 52 kg (114.6 lbs). My measurements are 36, 26 and 36 (my photo attached). Please tell me which wedding dress model best suits me because i really don’t know what to decide.

      Une,
You are an hourglass. I am assuming you are 5’5″? which is averge height. (petite heights are below 5’5″)

You are considered to have the “perfect” measurements. same upper and lower and exactly 10 inches less in waist. Lucky you!!

        Thanks a lot.

  11. Shannon

I cant believe I found this page, I have been having trouble!! I really want a third party to give me an honest opinion!! I think I have a hourglass figure, I am 5’2″ 40 bust, 31 waist, and 41 hips. I feel like I know what I like and what looks good, but when everyone will be looking at me, I don’t want to make the decision on my own. I am really moving towards the mermaid style, I am very confident with my figure, but there are so many options and so many things to think about that I am just getting overwhelmed.

    • Angel

You do have an hourglass figure. Usually the hour glass figure is characterized by having the same measurements in bust and hips while having a waist of about 10 inches smaller than that. Your 40, 31, 41 is very close to being exactly like this which would make you a hourglass. As for the mermaid dress I would try some on to see if you like them. You do have the body shape for them, but you are also only 5’2″. standard type mermaid dress may not fit because the dip in the knee would fall to far down on your petite frame. If you wanted a mermaid dress you would more than likely have to find one made for petites or have one made. I would also stay away from really poufy dresses for they would make you look shorter. Your best bet is to find a retailer and just try stuff on. You will find the perfect dress. :) I have learned this after dress shopping with my best friend who is about your size and height.

    • Stacey@Favor Ideas

      Shannon,
It also appears that you may be a tad short waisted. Angel choosing a dress with alot of embellishments or too poufy would overwhelm you. I am a hourglass also with a short waist. you will want to find something that lengthens. Stay away from empire waist dresses they will only add bulk.
      * look at this website

I am almost 5’9″ and have a larger bust. The best necklines for me are V necks, scoop, sweethearts, or straight across neckline with a sleeve. I dont look good in gathered baby doll sleeves.

Dont choose a sheath it will make your a short waist appear shorter. I also found that a flowing aline worked really well to lengthen my torso. I looked taller but also VERY slim! :D

        • Stacey@Favor Ideas

          Shannon,
I would begin my search with the aline. From the pic you could almost fall into the pear shape category. Could you post one more pic hands down at side front facing. I would be happy to take another look to be absolute. Sometimes measurements can be tricky, even though you have the classic hourglass measurements. There are alot of body types that can fall into two shapes.

    • jennifer

      hi there,
this is me on the picture wearing the red shirt….i am now 30 pounds heavier but i still have the same body shape i guess i am 5f3 i have wide shoulders i think…what kind of dress should i pick..?
      i am really confuse

      • Stacey@Favor Ideas

        Hi Jennifer,
Since you are 5’3″ a simple dress would be best so it wouldn’t overwhelm the frame. You look like you coudl be an inverted triangle. Is there any way I could get your measurements? shoulders, bust, waist, hips?

        • Stacey@Favor Ideas

          Jennifer,
          * look at this style.
          * or this one
          * this is very pretty

I would stick with a aline it will elongnate the torso.
You and my daughter have a similar build. SHe is 5’1. She looks best in baby doll style shirts and empire waisted shirts/dresses. She is of medium chest measurements, so it doesnt make her look out of proportion. This could be a good option. Also spaghetti straps with a straight cut neckline works well, along with a scoop. V necks are fine as long as they are not to low, then they dont flatter as well. I cant wait to hear from you!! :D

i am planning for a wedding on October 2010. this is kinda rush coz i got pregnant this july. I’ll be a 3mos pregnant bride. I am 5’5″ height, 66 kilos, and 37-30-38. Please help me.

  13. Karen Williams

Hello Stacey, I need some advice on a wedding dress. I am getting married in Nov. 2010, and I have narrowed my choice of dresses based on my body type. I am shopping online because of the wholesale price, therefore, I can’t try anything on. I am 40 years old and this will be my second wedding. I am 5′ft tall and I would say that I am introverted triangle. My shoulders are 38, bust size 36 B, waist is 33 with little love handles, and my hips are 37. Please would you help me decide what dress is ideal for me and which dress do you think will compliment me more., or if you have any other selections. Thanks for all your help.

    • Stacey@Favor Ideas

      Karen,
Hi! Very difficult to tell from sideway pose. Could you post a front facing pic? That way I can give you the right choices. Thank you so much!!

** Loose clothing or bridal salon photos ( bride wearing the dress) can disguise the body shape.

          Hi Stacey,

Thank you so much for easing my decision. From the link you sent, the third dress from the right was one of the dresses that I did adore, and wanted, but I saw other dresses more reasonably price. Ok, before finalizing my decision towards the first dress on the left from the first upload of pictures sent. Which dress do you like better from this dress and the dress you’ve like? Karen,
I am thinking that the halter is not gonna be quite as flattering but the previous strapless is very beautiful

**Is that the same strapless dress as the first pic in your very first post?

They are all a similar style and I think that is what you should go with. It seems to be the one style that stands out to you. Love the wrap style waist with side drape, very flattering for inverted triangle.

        • Karen Williams

Hello Stacey, I know that I am being a pain right now. Prior to your response, I stumble across a dress that look my age, looks complimentary to my body shape. This will be it…lol. How do you feel about this dress for me? Based on your opinion of this dress, it would be a toss of this dress and the dress you’ve chosen from dress now one on the far right from first uploaded photos. YOUR THE BEST!

        • Stacey@Favor Ideas

          Karen,
It really depends on if you want strapless or the comfort of straps. This is a nice dress but it I am not to sure about this one. I am afraid the way the v neck pushes the chest up it may throw your body shape out of proportion. I apologize for completely forgetting this key thing. Keep the adornments and embellishments minimal on upper bodice. IT will draw more attention to broader shoulders.

the best necklines will be strapless, halter, or one shoulder.

        • Stacey@Favor Ideas

          Karen,
          * another page I know you will see some v necks on here, they are cut slightly lower for better flattery but not to low.

        • Stacey@Favor Ideas

          Karen,
Also the layered waist throws me off a little on the last dress you posted. It is a simple dress with detail but I dont think it would be proper waist definition. It appears “too” bulky. :D

        • Karen Williams

          Hi Stacey,

Very good, I can see exactly what you’re talking about. Therefore, we conclude that it can either be anyone of the three dresses for me to choose. As you know I would like to conceal my stomach area just a little. Perhaps, with the last dress posted a little to much…hun…lol. Ok, out of the three choices, which dress will not make me look to much like a quarter back ready to attack…lol. I do like dress number 1 but I let you decide. Thanks again!

        • KAREN

          Hi Stacey,

Looking at the sequence of the picture order, I like dress number two, followed by three, and than number one. I like one but not sure if it will hide my mid-section somewhat…lol. Since, you are the expert, I respect your opinion! What would compliment me more. Thanks :D

        • Stacey@Favor Ideas

          Karen,
I took a look at the website to get a closer look at the details on these dresses. The first dress might make you look very short in the waist, the second dress first detail I noticed was the way the bust did. I am amfraid it will stand out and make you look top heavy. Third dress is might add too much bulk on lower half. It was difficult to tell from the pics posted. I know I may be sounding wishy washy and for that I apologize. I am heavily leaning toward the halter you posted( girl on the stairs), I think that one would be beautiful on you. I think it will lengthen the torso a bit because of the detail at the hip ( like lower waisted pants or hip hugger styles do). I do love this one it is just I couldnt tell alot about it and when I saw the other images it really stood out to me. I used my pictures to save your image and the other dresses and it really looked “right”. My daughter has broad shoulders and halters look gorgeous on her. It narrows the shoulders. Let me know what you think. I got my fingers crossed you love that dress anyway!!! :D

        • Stacey@Favor Ideas

          Karen,
I cropped your pic but I want to list both side by side.

        • Stacey@Favor Ideas

          Karen,
I looked at the side pic of you in the black and white shirt, it is a flattering cut for your body type. It looks like a fitted V neck with a seam under bust like a empire? If you look closely , the wedding dress has a similar cut as the shirt.

        • Karen Williams

          Hi Stacey,

Your so sweet and kind to take all this time out to really assist me., it makes me feel good. That’s a rarity! Wow, you went to great lengths, I appreciate it. Ok, will give the halter a try. Thank you so very much! YOU are truly the best, and keep up with the good work.

          Karen

        • Stacey@Favor Ideas

          Karen,
Thank you so much for the kind words. I love being able to help.Once the dress arrives, I would love for you to post a pic on here or thru my email addy, so I can see how it turned out! :D The best of luck!!!!

        • Karen Williams

I will definitely, do that. Take care and thanks again.

  15. Chris Thompson

    Hello,
I am a large woman and in need of help. Next year for our 20th anniversary we are renewing our vows and since we didn’t have a wedding we are going all out. I have been to 6 bridal shops and have only found 2 dresses I like. I’m not sure what looks good on me. I need a size 20 in a wedding dress. Any suggestions?

    • Stacey@Favor Ideas

      Chris,
From the picture, is your upper body( shoulders) broader than your lower body? From the last pic it appears you are a inverted triangle. But I want to be for sure.

  16. Brenda

    Hello,
I am 5’3-5’4″ tall. I have broader shoulders and a HUGE chest (ugh!!!). I wanted to see if this dress would look good on me. My future mother-in-law thinks that I might be too busty for the style of the top and too short for the bunching on the skirt. Thanks for your help! (sorry about the dogs in the background of the pic! They’re nosy!)

Hi I need help today is 07-23-2010 my wedding is in 4 months to the day from now. I am 5 foot 3 4ths of an inch. I have a bit of baby fat from my son and want to know how to pick a dress that fits my body. I also haven’t a clue how to post a picture of myself but the love of my love should if you need one. please help I feel hopeless!

    • Stacey@Favor Ideas

      Samantha,
Could I get a pic and your measurements? Thank you! :D

  18. cecilia

Stacey, I need help pls! I’m 5’8, 34A-26-35, with shoulders 1″-2″ wider than my hips. With a long torso I feel like I can’t do mermaid or figure-hugging silhouette. Any suggestions what may work (silhouette, neckline, waistline, fabric, etc..) for skinny, long-torso, small-breasted body shape? And the wedding is going to be in a Spanish style chapel built in 19th century in May. Thank you very much!

attached is a drop-waist a-line with asymmetrical pickups on skirt, a trumpet and another drop-waist A-line with sweetheart.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Marie H.,
From your measurements you sound pear shaped. But from the pic you dont look pear shaped. I cant really tell cause the pic is kinda dark. Would you mind reposting another facing front? Thank you!
P.S. The dress in the link is this the one your looking at? It is beautiful. With your height you could pull this dress off. I just want to make sure that way I wont give you the wrong style. :D

      • marie h

thank you so much. heres another picture, i hope this helps more.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          marie H,
I would stick with an aline shape. You appear to fall in an hourglass category. I still couldnt tell if your shoulders were broader than your hips but still an aline is the better choice because it covers so many figure types. It will lengthen the waist area. Think about a wrap style aline.
          * something like this would be very beautiful

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          marie H,
          * so would this.
          * or this because of how the waist is, it will lengthen a short waist

I did suggest the ballgown be careful of this style when trying it on though, cause some styles might make you look out of proportion and some alines will make you look taller( in case you didnt want too) Steer clear of belted looks. It will make you look out of proportion. Dont overlook a basque wedding dress either.
          * great article!!
I am a semi-short waisted hourglass. And Iknow the tips I gave are complex but I find it best to stick with dresses that are aline and flow over the body) I have larger chest so that pulls in more style issues! LOL. For example, I pair wide legged jeans with a long fitted t shirt and it lengthens my waist. I am 5’9″ so even though alines might make me appear taller but it lengthens my frame. I do not look good in empire, most sheaths, boxy cuts, belted looks, etc. it has to be a flowing line with no break in the silouette. I wore a ballgown once and it was okay but not as slimming as the aline. :D

        • marie h

thank you! this was very helpful

  21. Tricia

Hello, I have a question about a dress. I found a dress online that I absolutly love, but am curious how it will turn out for me. This will be my second wedding. My first wedding I purchased a ball gown type dress, it made me look fat, as I am short. I am a little worry about my stomach, I had a baby about 9 months ago… It’s not bad, but it’s not as flat as it use to be. I like the dress online because it had lace up, which I thought would be good, like a corset. The only issue is I have an issue with my arms, I feel they are too thick. I cannot wear long sleves because I will be wed in Florida. Please let me know what you think, I really appreciate your help!

    My Messurements
    Bust: 36 B
    Waist: 29
    Hips: 36
    Height: 5′ 3″ (wearing heals 5’5″)

    • Tricia

Sorry my waist is 30 inches, not 29.

      • stacey

        Tricia,
I think this dress would be beautiful on you. It would flatter very well. If you are concerned about the strapless just wear a chiffon wrap. Usually strapless can be very flattering.

        • Tricia

Thanks Stacey! The chiffon wrap is a great idea. I am glad to hear the dress will work with my body type, I have gone through a hundred dresses trying to find one. It is expecially hard trying to order online. Thank you again.

    • Irene

I really like the dress Tricia posted who makes it?

      • Tricia

        Hi Irene,

I am not sure who makes it, if you where looking to order from the designer. Maybe it can be found on google or another search engine. I found this dress on a wholesale site
We are on a tight budget and it’s not a bad price. Plus, dresses never really look the same in pictures so I would rather spend $275 than $1000+ if it didn’t turn out exactly as the picture. That happened to be once before, I spent a ton of money, but when it arrived, was I in for a shock! Sigh. I am pretty good with sewing and altering, if need be. The cool thing is that they do make the dress to your measurements.

  22. Teresa

If you could help me that would be amazing! I just moved to another state so don’t really have anyone to go dress shopping with me.
    I’m 5’4″, 38, 35, 43 and wear a size 14. ( I included a picture of myself)

Here are some dresses I like:

  23. Crystal

Another quick question, do you know where I can find corsets/waist cinchers (an actual store, not online preferably)? Also, here are a couple more dresses that I fell in love with, but didn’t know whether or not they would fit my body type. Thanks! :)

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Crystal,
this dress has a empire waist effect. it will make a larger chest appear larger which will throw your shape out of balance. You could try these on but I am thinking it may not work. But always remember a dress in person may surprise you.
      * great article

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Crystal,
        * check out this article ( my personal fave is 2909)

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Crystal,
For waist cinchers/corsets I would recommend checking locally with dress shops/department stores. If they dont have them, they may be able to direct you to the right place. :D

  24. Crystal

Hi! This site looks like a Godsend lol. I was wondering if you could take a look at me and tell me what kind of dress I should get? I am about 5’8, 36DD chest and as you can probably see in the photos, I have love handles and a bit of belly flab. I’m looking for a dress that’s flattering and will make my fiance’s jaw drop. My concern is finding A) a dress that has built in support for a woman of my breast size and B) a dress or corset type thing that will either hide or flatten out my flab. Any suggestions? Here is a dress that both my mother and I really liked, I was just unsure as to whether or not it would look okay with my body type. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Crystal,
Actually this dress would be great for you. 1) it has a wrap style with slight ruching perfect for disguising any areas in the waist or stomach area. 2)I love the flow to this dress and with your height you should be able to carry it off beautifully with a long lean line. 3) yes make sure you have the proper support for a larger chest, another idea is to add sleeves or straps to this style dress so you can wear a good bra. 4) You are in the right direction for your body type. ( hourglass). 5) you could easily get away with a slightly fuller skirt too. A slim skirted ballgown would be amazing on you.

      • Junebride

I think you should try on dresses in all the styles until you get the right one, A line, sheath and dont rule out mermaid-it can be very flattering on larger women-I was very surprised thinking I could only go A-line but looked and felt sexiest in the mermaid-with my bridesmaids in full agreement! Its better to try on dresses in person cuz you dont really know until you do-then go ahead and order the one you want online. Good luck!!

  25. Sherry

confused on what gown to get, help. thanks

  26. Sherry

need some advice in choosing the perfect gown. i’m getting confused, A-Line or empire? with sleeves or V-neck. please Help. thanks

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Sherry,
How tall or you and what are you measurements? You look petite in the pic but I want to be sure.

  27. Michelle

I also would love some help on picking out the right kind of dress. NOt quite sure of my measurements (dont have a flexible measuring tape) but here is the info I can give I am about 5’4 weigh 190 size 16-18 street clothes. I am in love with a particular dress that I have seen online but am unsure if it will look right on me.

Here is the link to the one i really like

I also sort of like this …

    and this one

not sure how to post pic of myself in street clothes

    • Michelle

sorry tried to post a pic and it wouldnt let me post it or the link any help???

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Michelle,
I am not sure why it wouldnt post it or the link. I am having trouble posting some links myself. Save the pic of yourself into ( your) pictures on the computer and once saved go into browse and see if it will add it. Also make sure it is the right type photo ( as listed below JPG etc.) If you give me the link I will happily check it out.

  28. Stacey@FavorIdeas

    Heh guys,
Need a wedding dress designer, lost the info when computer and can’t seem to find this one again.
It came from the Instyle Weddings Mag. Summer 2009

  29. Jessie

Hi! I recently just had a baby and so I’m not used to shopping for my new body and I have no clue what style of dress would look best on me….I am 5’10 my measurements are 39, 31, 43 and I weigh about 150. I really like the trumpet/mermaid styles but also the ball gowns and anything really fashion forward. Thanks for your help!

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Jessie,
Could you post a pic cause you could easily fall into a couple different body types and I want to make sure. Face front pic and more form fitted clothing are best. Thanks!

  30. Larriet

    Hi,
I’m not getting married THAT soon, but I thought it would be better to ask early. I think I have an hourglass shape. I don’t know my exact measurements, but I’m 5’5″ (not afraid of high heels!) and 115 pounds. I have boobs (full C cup), a very round hiney, and fairly shapely legs, since I’m a runner. I’m really not that worried about hiding my body, but I have very broad shoulders, and I don’t want to accentuate them. Also, since I am 5’5″, and probably wouldn’t wear heels over three inches to my wedding, I don’t want to look short.

I drew this dress, because I was unable to find any pictures like it. It’s my dream dress and what I’ve always tried to pictured myself wearing.
Lace, lower back, kind of a line or modified a line with either feather (tasteful, not tacky) or tulle detail at the bottom.

This is what I look like.
    Photo 1.
    Photo 2.
    Photo 3.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Larriet,
You are a classic hourglass. Since you are 5’5″ you will still want to stick with simple gowns that wont overpower your frame. I love your dress/drawing. I think that dress will be beautiful on you. I would at least try on a similar style at a bridal store to see in person before making dress( if that was what you were gonna do). Since there are so many great links: google hourglass body shape and wedding dress.
