Unique Theme Ideas for Your Wedding Cake
Theme weddings can launch some truly creative wedding cake ideas — ones that delight the eye and mind as well as the tastebuds.
Need a beautiful idea for a medieval theme wedding? Try a cake laced with pearls and topped with a golden crown. On the other hand, adventure-loving couples can top their cake with mini figurines of the newlyweds in a small plane or a motorcycle. If you're planning a Victorian theme wedding, try a cake draped in bows and Victorian roses. Or for an Oriental themed wedding, a two-tiered cake topped with an orchid-filled vase is elegance itself.
Your wedding cake theme could reflect your love for a favorite flower ... sunflowers, pansies, birds-of-paradise, roses. A talented cake designer can actually replicate your bridal bouquets in sugar and fondant. Or for a down-home look, order up a garden that mirrors your yard, complete with picket fences.
Then, there are seasonally themed cakes — which give your designer license to let his imagination run wild. For fall weddings, you could opt for a cake garnished with grapes, grape leaves and chrysanthemums. Summer-themed wedding cakes look as cheerful and bright as the season with fondant bows and white daisies.
Even more dramatic are the wedding cakes based on favorite crystals and jewels. The diamond lover can have a stunning diamond-themed cake, studded generously with edible crystals — though this can be an expensive option. Want the exotic look of jade? With cake, you can create an entire stack of complex, jade-like slabs. It's even possible to base your cake on a china pattern. In fact, with the new edible technologies, some bakers can actually scan any pattern you please and affix it, picture-perfect, to your cake's fondant shell.
For a truly unique wedding cake, have a heart-to-heart with the cake designer, giving both of you plenty of lead time. Though there's always that urge to come up with an incredible design by yourself, you'll probably find it helpful to pick the brains of a pro who does "incredible" for a living.

I am planning a fire fighter themed wedding for in the spring and was trying to find pictures of possible cake ideas. If any one come to finding something fire related but nice let me know. Thank you for helping!
I made a fabulous fire engine and fireman cake from Debbie Brown’s “Naughty Cakes”. Just move the position of the hose and it will no longer be naughty. You can see a photo under “Naughty Cakes” on CakeCentral.
I’m looking for alternatives to a wedding cake all together! My fiancee doesn’t eat sugar, but I don’t want to lose the tradition of “cutting the cake” together. We’re living in and having the wedding in Germany. Any sugar free suggestions? I’m open to any ideas!
alicia,
can you tell me the things he does eat. they do make sugar free cakes. just google search sugar free wedding cake also try sugarless wedding cake or ask your local bakery. another idea is the fruit fountain. but you lose the tradition of cutting the cake. i want sure if he couldnt eat it or didnt like sweets. you can always have something like banana nut bread with artifial sweetener etc. with splenda you can make wonderful glazes. and you still get the “cutting the cake”

Hi Stacey,
I should have mentioned that the problem is that he doesn’t like sweet things at all! That unfortunately includes fruit… I would be fine with cutting the bratwurst, it just doesn’t seem so elegant. I like the idea of he and I doing something at the reception and then sharing with with our friends and family. I’m just at a loss for ideas!
alicia, wow this one is challenging. give me a list of things he loves for snacks or desserts and your fave too, even if they are not sweet, i want to see what i can think of for you. with this info i am gonna research it a bit for you and i have a friend i can ask for some more ideas. looking forward to your reply!!
It is challenging! I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks so!
I thought about what he likes to snack on, and I’m afraid it’s not an easy list. It is: rice waffles, pretzels (those big soft ones, which are easy to get here), 100% chocolate (in small doses), and his favorite is something called “Karlsbader”, which is like an unsweetened crossiant. All desserts go straight to me (yum!). Maybe I could have a bakery make a giant pretzel? Again, not super elegant, but it might delight our American and German guests!
Hi, Alicia!
I may be a little late responding to this, but what about a “cheese” cake? I have seen several recipes for savory type cheesecakes for appetizers, some with southwestern flavors like cheddar and peppers, or even with crabmeat or roasted vegetables. They are usually served with crackers….
You would get the look of the cake you want and your fiance won’t have to eat anything sweet. :)
heres a random idea but I saw a Wedding cake made of cheeses and fruit for decoration and it looked amazing. No joke was on a bridal program,
My cousin is giving out “iddy biddy” cakes as party favors and we are looking for a poem that we saw at a wedding years ago that says something about thanking guest for coming and eating a piece of their cake before going to bed that night and remembering them. It’s short and rhymes, but I’ve looked through pages of interenet wedding poems and can’t find it. If you know it, could you send it to me. Thanks
Hi Lori,
I saw your post on the website and I was wondering if you ever found the cake poem. I am doing the mini wedding cakes for my favors and I thought it would be cute to include a poem similar to the one you were talking about.
Looking forward to hearing back from you!
Sarah

Hey, guys–Everyone looking for the edible cake gems, you can find them at fancyflours.com
Where can one buy the edible crystals like the ones you mentioned in the article about unique-themed wedding cakes? My daughter and I have been searching endlessly for a supply source for edible crystals and jewels…to no avail. Any help you can give us will be immensely appreciated.
Hali, if you want a fountain that is lighted red, what you really need is just a regular fountain and color the water. That is what I always do for wedding cakes that I use a fountain on. Any craft store that sells Wilton products should have or be able to get the fountain. Or you can go to Wilton.com.
Hope this helps.
I have been looking for a fountain that goes under my wedding cake but I can’t find a red lighted one. Please if you have any ideas to where i can find one please let me know.
