A Guide to Fall Wedding Flowers
But lately, plenty of brides have come to see the charms of a September or October wedding, with all its New England splendor.
After all, the colors are rich and the scents and spices are vibrant. Best of all? You can buy dramatic fall decorations cheaply at any one of a hundred farmers markets along the road. Perhaps for all these reasons, autumn is now one of the year's most popular times to tie the knot.
With all this enthusiasm comes some beautiful trends in bouquets.
First, we can probably safely say that the queen of the fall bouquet is the majestic mini calla lily, which combines pure elegance with an incredible range of colors to choose from. And it's especially strong in the burnt orange and flame hues that autumn brides crave in their flowers.
Hydrangea is another fall classic that looks great anywhere from swanky nighttime ballrooms to looming barns. Available in an incredible range of shades, hydrangea can also be easily "tipped" with an aerosol by a florist to deepen or control the shade. Another plus: hydrangeas are much cheaper than callas!
The rose in its deeper, more burgundy hues combines all that's classic romance with the special gravity we associate with autumn. Roses in coral shades, too, bring a special, unexpected grace note to the fall bouquet.
Finally, autumn offers an opportunity to experiment with creative and woodsy bouquet choices, including seed pods, hypericum berries, ryegrass and bittersweet vines. Some of the most charming (if unconventional) bouquets and boutonniéres use copper wire to gorgeous effect.

Hi all you girls!
I’ve just got engaged and it’s very exiciting to read all of your messages - congratulations to all of us!!
We’re getting married next October 8th on a tiny island off the coast of north devon. We’re going for a rustic/romantic theme with autumn cornicopia basket bouquets. I’m having a white taffata dress in the style of romantic heroine with fawn coloured bridesmaid dresses. Have no idea about anything else yet, but I’m sorted!!
Hi Gail:
I think mums are totally doable and your daughter’s flowers will be gorgeous. Here are a few pics of mums in bouquets. Mini-mums are probably what you see most today, especially the “Kermit” button mums, the small, dense and bright flowers that show up in a lot of contemporary style bouquets (attached). These aren’t the kind you normally find at the farmer’s market, though.
Garden mums are maybe not as common in bouquets, but just as lovely. As you know, they can vary a lot in color and how they look. Some are more gerber daisy/wildflower looking and some look more finished, like dahlias. I attached a pic of some mums in bouquets with hypericum berries, lilies, sweetheart roses and gerbers. They have a country/casual feel … I think they’re lovely. Hopefully this helps a bit.
My daughter is planning a Fall wedding in 2009 and her groom and his mother are very fond of Mums and would like them integrated into the florals she picks. I realize there are different kinds of Mums and would like some feedback and is this doable? Thanks for any help. Gailanne
Robyn-
No I have yet to try on a dress but I am going to try to find a cream or champange color!! I have found my center pieces they are like a hurricane glass vase that is brown and sort of see through. Then around them I have a berry/stick wreath. Do you have a Michaels near you at all?? If you do you should look there because I know there stuff is going on sale. Also now would be the best time to look for you center pieces because fall/autumn stuff is going on clearance.
Another thing that we are doing is.. since we dont have a normal flower girl we are having our ring boy carry our rings on this big leaf and our rings sit nicely in the center!!! I know these ideas are not for everyone but who knows ::P
I look forward to hearing more of your ideas
melissa
Have you thought about using hydrangeas? They are very soft and pretty. I couldnt get the color i wanted but the florist spayed them for me. I was there when she was testing it - so easy to do it yourself. Hydrangeas would be very easy to tie up yourself. Also for the boutonnieres, silk works the best - trying hugging people all day with a flower on your chest.
OR since you are getting married in spring - tulips! You can even buy them at a grocery store and are very beautiful. Here are some pictures to help.
Hey Michelle!
Oooo the leaf idea sounds very cool. Thats great, I would never of thought of that. Also, I saw dresses in a burnt orange colour recently and they look wonderful for fall. I tried to get my man to wear the chocolate brown tux, but according to him he gets one say, and thats the tux.. haha it must be black
haha
I have gotten a lot done too surprisingly. However its more like the location, & church, colours, and apparel. I have yet to try on a white dress. Have you?? But really when it comes to center peices, and those little details- I haven’t a clue. The flowers are what I am most concerned about right now. There are just so many great fall looking flowers to choose from. I will take a look at center peices though, and see if I can find what you are looking for, and also for myself. So I take it candles are most popular then.
Robyn-
Hey I havent decided on my girls dress color yet we are going to look in October. We are going with a chocolate brown tux from Calvin Klein- my guy is really excited about the color. I am thinking like a orange/red color for my girls something like maybe a burnt red or orange. I have gotten so much done already!! I have my center pieces almost done but I am looking for candles for them I am looking for a medium sized uncented candle but all that I have seen is $4 a piece do you have any ideas? Another idea that we are doing which you may like is instread of flower petals my flower girl is a “Leaf Girl” we bought a ton of fake leafs from Michaels ( a craft store) and we are having her drop those!! Well let me know what you think!!
I HAVE AN APRIL 2008 WEDDING AND WE ARE DOING APPLE RED. I WANTED TO DO MY OWN BOUQUETS. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS FOR COLORS? I DON’T WANT TO DO ALL ROSES. NOT A FAN.HELP!
Hey Lisa,
Sorry I didn’t see your tip before. I think the champaign colour would look georgous! I think for the flowers, I might go a dark coral instead now, with ivory roses as well. I have yet to look at any colours and flowers together though, other then the internet. Thanks for all your suggestions
Michelle- Thats awesome that we have the exact same wedding date! What colour have you decided for the girls dresses. I am definitely going with the chocolate brown, satin. I have also seen pictures recently of the black tux with the chocolate brown vests for the guys, and it looks GREAT! I went to a bridal showcase last weekend, and they had it on display. It looks very modern, and sophisticated. You could however, if leaning that way as well, go with a lighter brown (champaigne, caramel, or expresso for the vests) looks very nice as well. Another option for flowers could be some type of lily- long stemmed looks for good. Well give me some of your ideas for what you want, and we could swop, and mix ideas. CONGRATS :P\
Hey guys, I have a question, I really want to have my colors hot pink and orange and I really want a fall wedding too, could those colors work at all???
Thanks
Hey,
I am having a wedding October of 2008. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Robyn —
Hey my wedding date is the same as yours!! Maybe we could swap some ideas!!
Brandy,
I am getting married October13, 2007 (coming up quickly!) We come from a line of many different religions, so to honor everyone, we basically wrote our own ceremony and it includes a handfasting, broom jumping and a Christian reading. My advise would be to look through Native American ceremonies and just incorporate your favorite into your ceremony.
Also, my girls’ dresses are dark brown, I did my juniors in a “latte” color and did the guys vests the same lighter brown … I coordinated and didn’t match exactly. The more I get into this process the more I have learned there is no “right or wrong”, it is your wedding and you should have it the way you want it!
Good luck all!
Hey girls!! Congrats to you all!!!!:? I am having an October fall wedding next year and I want it to have a country theme..Very simple yet unique and countryish…I was thinking mason jars with some sort of flowers in them with tealight candles everywhere..My color is an apple red for my girls..Any suggestions for decorations, centerpeices, favors, etc???
Thanks Blake@FavorIdeas! I have never been able to picture it, but yes now that I saw the pics, it looks very good. I will be going with that for sure now. Thanks again
Robyn, see this post on brown vests & black tuxes and see what you think. Personally, I think they look great!
Help! My Man Won’t Marry in Brown
If you are going to do blue and silver flowers you might want to think of using Bella Donna which is blue. Comes in light blue and bright blue. Good Luck!
Hi Robyn
I’m getting married 10/6/07 and have a fall theme. My girls are wearing chocolate dresses and the guys are wearing a black tux and truffle/champagn vest. They look very nice together. Our flowers will consist of rusty burnt orange and ivory roses along with hypericum berries, curly willow and antique hydrangeas for our flowers. The guys will wear hypericum berries. It looks really great and I’m so excited!
Hi there,
I am having my wedding on October 11th 2008
I was hoping to do dark brown dresses for my girls, but am wondering if the boys have dark brown vests with black tuxes, that might look horrible! Any ideas on that? Also I was hoping to have the flowers a dark coral, or maroon colour- unsure what would look the best. Some suggestions??
Thanks
My wedding is Oct 28, ‘08 my original colors were burg. and choc. brown… my husband to be’s only request has been to change the colors to blue and silver. any ideas about flowers in blue for that time of year?
