A Guide to Fall Wedding Flowers

Once upon a time, the marriage season hit its height in June, and wound down quickly after.

But lately, plenty of brides have come to see the charms of a September or October wedding, with all its New England splendor.

After all, the colors are rich and the scents and spices are vibrant. Best of all? You can buy dramatic fall decorations cheaply at any one of a hundred farmers markets along the road. Perhaps for all these reasons, autumn is now one of the year's most popular times to tie the knot.

With all this enthusiasm comes some beautiful trends in bouquets.

First, we can probably safely say that the queen of the fall bouquet is the majestic mini calla lily, which combines pure elegance with an incredible range of colors to choose from. And it's especially strong in the burnt orange and flame hues that autumn brides crave in their flowers.

Hydrangea is another fall classic that looks great anywhere from swanky nighttime ballrooms to looming barns. Available in an incredible range of shades, hydrangea can also be easily "tipped" with an aerosol by a florist to deepen or control the shade. Another plus: hydrangeas are much cheaper than callas!

The rose in its deeper, more burgundy hues combines all that's classic romance with the special gravity we associate with autumn. Roses in coral shades, too, bring a special, unexpected grace note to the fall bouquet.

Finally, autumn offers an opportunity to experiment with creative and woodsy bouquet choices, including seed pods, hypericum berries, ryegrass and bittersweet vines. Some of the most charming (if unconventional) bouquets and boutonniéres use copper wire to gorgeous effect.

I was planning on having lavender and silver as my colors. The theme was going to be sort of country/western. And I wanted daisy type flowers. I was planning a spring wedding, but was wondering if these types of ideas would work in the fall or be better in the spring?? Please give me your input. Email me gwarthen@hotmail.com
Thanks

Hello! I am getting married mid-September and am still trying to decide on colors. It technically is not fall yet, and still summer like weather here in the midwest, so I don’t want to go with orange and brown, but am thinking maybe a marine blue or deep purple/grape? Any suggestions on what flowers to do? I am not the best at this! I was thinking maybe a cream color to go with the blue or purple?

We’re getting married next October in a small town called Frigiliana, Spain. I’ve been trying to find out what kind of local flowers will be in season around that time, but am unable to find out anything! Does anyone know of any websites that might have some information?

Holley, I’m no expert, but you’ll have to make do with me until one comes along :D

In that bouquet I see Leucadendron (dark burgundy), pincushion proteas (coral), flame mini-calla lilies, orange roses (”Circus”?), red tipped hypericum berries, a few twigs, and what looks to me like Bells of Ireland. There’s another orange flower in there, but not sure what it is … maybe someone knows …

hope that helps!

Heather, check out winter wedding flowers … a modern look for that time of year is a dense hand-tied bouquet of white roses punctuated with dark burgundy or ‘black magic’ roses, which I think looks gorgeous.

Of course you can also use do this high-contrast look with casablanca lilies, tulips, mini-callas for starters … lots of options.

Please help!

Does anyone know of any kind of champaign, sandy coloured flowers (aka cashmere coloured, to venus bridal) that I could use for boutonnieres. I am having chocolate brown dresses with cashmere coloured sashes, and black tuxes with chocolate brown vests. I was going to use the boutinnieres flower to match the random >cashmere

I love the bouquet you have with the bride above. I am getting married in October 09. Can you give me any ideas for pew bouquets and for center pieces for the reception? I am having a black and white wedding but want my flowers to be the focal point being arranged in fall colors.

Hi I am getting married October 18, 2008. I am too trying to create a fall themed wedding. So far I have decided to print my own invitations that have fall colors leaves with the information printed on vellum paper with a gold ribbon to tie the two pieces together. Actually I am going dress shopping today. I am so excited. I want red roses and mango calla lilies for my bouquet. For my centerpieces very simply, candles and silk rose petals in fall colors and silk leaves. My colors are red, shimmering ivory, however i would like to incorporate a brown if i could, I was thinking of the tablecloths but i am afraid it wont look right. Any suggestions of what color linens I should use. I done want use too much red.

Tashia, for my wedding my colors are Ivory, Brown and Gold also for fall… but we are using peach and light oranges for accents because its fall there are so many colors to use. My bouquet is just roses, peach and white gerber daisies with brown baby brethe but my girs instead of baby breath in their arrangements are using dried flowers, with gerber daisies… It looks so nice. I dunnno what else do you need to know…..
