A Guide to Fall Wedding Flowers
But lately, plenty of brides have come to see the charms of a September or October wedding, with all its New England splendor.
After all, the colors are rich and the scents and spices are vibrant. Best of all? You can buy dramatic fall decorations cheaply at any one of a hundred farmers markets along the road. Perhaps for all these reasons, autumn is now one of the year's most popular times to tie the knot.
With all this enthusiasm comes some beautiful trends in bouquets.
First, we can probably safely say that the queen of the fall bouquet is the majestic mini calla lily, which combines pure elegance with an incredible range of colors to choose from. And it's especially strong in the burnt orange and flame hues that autumn brides crave in their flowers.
Hydrangea is another fall classic that looks great anywhere from swanky nighttime ballrooms to looming barns. Available in an incredible range of shades, hydrangea can also be easily "tipped" with an aerosol by a florist to deepen or control the shade. Another plus: hydrangeas are much cheaper than callas!
The rose in its deeper, more burgundy hues combines all that's classic romance with the special gravity we associate with autumn. Roses in coral shades, too, bring a special, unexpected grace note to the fall bouquet.
Finally, autumn offers an opportunity to experiment with creative and woodsy bouquet choices, including seed pods, hypericum berries, ryegrass and bittersweet vines. Some of the most charming (if unconventional) bouquets and boutonniéres use copper wire to gorgeous effect.

Hi! We’re planning our wedding for October 6, 2012 in Elmhurst, IL (Chicago suburb). The bridal party will be wearing plum and I’d like orange calla lilies for bouquets and boutonnieres. Here’s where the problem lies — we’ll have SEVERAL other attendants in the wedding, which means MANY more boutonnieres and corsages. Are there some less expensive/seasonal flowers that would complement the calla lilies? One florist that I spoke with suggested burgundy mums…I like burgundy, and I like mums, but I can’t picture it with our current color scheme. Please help!
Michelle,
You could do shades of orange like in this wedding...
This will help you see the colors together.

Please help. I am getting married October 6, 2012 in Jacksonville, Florida at the River City Brewing Company and need a bit of help. I am allergic to roses and can’t seem to figure out the perfect bouquet. All fall colors will be used in the wedding, but I think we’re leaning towards burgundy and purple. We’re on a lower budget but we still want it to look and feel extravagant and warm.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Our theme is musically derived by the way.
Kimberly,
Great venue.Actually in this setting I would really pull in some of “sea worthy” accents or even british colonial style. It reminds me of an historical ship and is very nice. I love the floors, just everything!! I could easily see lanterns for your table centerpieces and these can be rented from a rental supply or call your local florist to find out where. or you can scoop up cylinder vases at dollartree website for a buck each, head to your craft store or wal-mart craft section and buy inexpensive bags of shells or river rocks and submerge flower in season( call florist to find out what flowers are in season in your area, tell them you are allergic to roses and want a great alternative. Orchids may be pricey in bulk but one orchid in each vase shouldn’t be that pricey but dont stop on orchids there are many other flowers that will work. Not only will this look add to your setting and candles will give a impact( as well as one of the cheapest ways to go for centerpieces) it will be reusable and easy on your pocketbook.
Look at this
Also using fall foliage and seasonal greenery will make it look lush while keeping costs down. Do they provide the linens? If so what color do they offer and will you be using what is available? If so that will cut down on costs. I wouldn’t call a major florist, call someone who owns their own little shop or just starting out because their prices are usually the best. They will go above and beyond usually. They may even have flower “culls” that are, perfectly fine and perfect for submerging, at a discount.
Here is link to a wedding that popped in my mind for your setting. Scour flea markets and thrift shops for mismatched silver or gold items…
You can steer “mostly”flowers altogether if you like by using seasonal foliage, candles, have bridal party in plum or burgundy( I think plum would be amazing). Stick with flowers to only your bridal party and other members of the wedding including the groom and bride. look for fall foliage in gorgeous plums, oranges, burgundies, etc. This is one of the most beautiful weddings I have seen…
inexpensive seasonal flowers plus green leaves and a touch of fall foliage makes for a breathtaking decor. Again mismatched containers, votives and candleholders from dollar tree.
kimberly,
Just saw your last comment. Look at this, it is amazing!
Glass bottle centerpieces would be amazing!
Love everything about this, it has roses but silk rose petals could be used. I have seen very real looking petals…
Petals give impact without lots of cost and look gorgeous when paired with candles no matter the containers…
A music derived theme should be different not with everything matching yet complimenting. Those purple linens with damask runner, candles, and gold chargers with black accents. WOW! Rock star worthy! And how bout’ that bouquet?
Or this…Feathers would be perfect in your venue. Well actually I would choose feathers over anything I have said, combined with some details from my last link and this one…
Add this bouquet to the floating burgundy red or purple candles with rocks in the cylinders and surround that with votives, add a feather on each placesetting or intertwined among vase/votives. Scroll to end for wedding centerpiece…
Hope this was ging in the right direction. Let me know!! Thanks

I am getting married September 3rd at the womens club and I cant figure out the colors or centerpieces. I am on a tight budget and really want roses but dont know if they are out of season. I like the colors tan, jade, pink, peach silver, merlot, cream and brown. Please give me ideas on how to decorate.
Brenda,
Do you have a bigger pic or a website link? It is difficult to see the details of the room.
Getting married November 26th. Can not decide what flowers I should do for our bouquets. Since having to move the wedding up several months, i have just gotten confused. I was planning on light blue hydrangeas, white callas, and white roses. Would that be acceptable for a November wedding?
Kelly,
Absolutely, sounds beautiful. I would check with the florist about the prices and season. Out of season florals tend to be more expensive. Or check out fiftyflowers.com

Hi. I want to go with the above bouquet (burgundy proteas, burnt orange calla lilies, pin cushions, irish bells, etc.) There are a few pictures of this bouquet on the internet but I have no idea how to incorporate these colours throughout the wedding. Most decor available at the venue are choc brown steel items. Table cloths are white and there are rectangular tables. I was thinking of using burgundy runners, floating candles, etc. Would this work and do you perhaps know where I can find pictures of the table arrangements that go with the above bouquet?
Nicolene,
I will keep looking, could you post the reception site pic or link so I can see what it needs? thanks!
I couldn’t find the centerpieces that go with this wedding bouquet.

Hi Stacey
Thanks for the ideas. The website is http://www.die-akker.co.za.
Kind regards,

Nicolene,
You are going in the right direction with your colors. The venue is stunning!! I do love the white linens and the burgundy runners would look beautiful, but “just” the white linens really look beautiful too. You coudl easily have floating canldes on the tables, then have a couple of strategically placed fall arrangements around the room. You could even use fall branches in urns placed around the room.
help1 getting married nov 6th. I am having red roses for my bouquet. my linens are ivory and napkins are burgundy.
My maid of honor has purchased a blue gown. how do I incorporate all of this together.
5 weeks and stressing big time.
Maureen,

HELP! Getting married in October in the Pacific NW with deep plum bridesmaid dresses and copper and ivory accents. Venue is a traditional CC and I want understated elegance throughout. What flowers do you suggest?
Thanks
Elaine,
I would check with my florist to see what is in season for your area. Simple roses ( timeless style flowers) will give understated elegance, simple fillers.
* weddings with understated elegance
* real wedding style by category
* search ideas by color
Elaine,
Understated elegance would also be a singlw type flower in a single color. Like calla lilies tied with a beautiful ribbon.
* like this
Elaine,
Could I see a link to the venue? Understated elegance wuld also be simple one type flower in vases on your tables. Carry the same type flower to the tables as well.
* understated elegance
Think coppery orange callas or roses. Sometimes it is is suggested to use the same color as the bridesmaid dress for her bouquets ( for example lighter plum bouquets against dark dresses and vice versa) it gives a very pleasing look. Tie off light plum callas with a coppery ribbon. It has great contrast.
Hey.
My wedding is October 2nd 2010..It has a simple rustic kind of feel to it. My BM are in dark brown with cream and green flowers…my centerpieces are lanterns with mason jars on either side of them with raffia tied in a bow around them and filled with a sunflower and wheat grass….my table numbers are wood table numbers, and my favors are brown paper bags….So now you got a feel for it I have a question about the lighting…..
Although I would love to have my recpetion in a barn type venue…its not. Its in a hall with new ceramic tile, hardwood dance floor and painted white walls. Currently, I have a decorator coming in and she is planning on draping tulle and lights from the ceiling…I am wondering if I should forgo the tulle and lights and just have lights and maybe hang paper lanterns? What do you think…Or should I just leave the tulle as the back drop behind the head table and the cake table will have tulle draped with brown tulle? Make sense???/
Here are a couple more pics to give you the feel
Stephanie,
I think I would hang the lights only. What would be neat is to twist them around rope and run them in a length across room. Another thing is to use props like wagon wheels etc. To pull in more rustic charm.
* like this
* or the lights in this hall
Stephanie,
Can I get a link or pic to the interior? So I can see exactly what would work. I like the paper lantern idea too. Think aged looking like beige and off white. Like parchment paper color. Another thing to do is hang grapevine and white lights. Also think urns with tall branches and white lights in corners etc.
Stephanie,
Try to turn the lighting down. Also ask your lighting technician what color ( like an amber color) could be worked in to give the room a antiqued look. Everyone looks amazing in amber lighting. Then hang the paper lanterns.
* here is amber lighting
Hi, I am planning my moms wedding. It is September 25, 2010. The colors Fall Orange and Sapphire, can you recommend flowers, and centerpieces please. We have everything else done, and I cant seem to think of anything for either of those. The wedding is at the lodge her and her fiance own together. It is an outside and simple wedding. Thanks so much…
Brittney,
* some pics to browse
* seriously like this
Brittney,
Wasn’t sure if you were going rustic? or more classic in a rustic setting. If you want I can take a look at a pic. I think simple burnt orange blooms with fall foilage or fillers and maybe a few pumpkins in the mix would look really nice.
Help!!!! I am getting married in nov 2010 and need help with wedding colors and flowers wanting it to be country and outdoors for the the fact that me and my fiance are both outdoor people…

We are having a November 2011 wedding–Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. I want to use burnt orange, copper, rust, gold, type colors. What type of flowers will be in season in Oregon?
Rachael,
I would talk to a local florist to see. But here is a small list…

Hi Stacey,
I am getting married in October 2010. Completely overwhelmed. HELP! My colors are copper & cranberry. I am looking for ideas that include rich accents and accessories. Interested in Moroccan, Mediterranean or bohemian themes (still trying to decide). Outdoor wedding with an arbor/canopy that I would love to have draped with organza or some other comparable fabric. Indoor reception. Currently thinking of bronze latern centerpieces or floating colorful centerpieces of some sort. Any suggestions you can provide are more than welcome. Thank you in advance.

Melissa,
* this one is fantastic.
Bohemian and Moroccan decor are gonna be very similar if not the same once decorated. They both lean to the Gypsy and Arabian look with luxurious fabrics and drapings, colored candles, etc.
If you go Boho( Hippie Chic) then it would be more 60′s flowerchild, still with the same exotic looking fabrics, wrap skirts, gypsy skirts, etc.
Thanks so much! These pics and advice are great!
I’m getting married September 18th and I’m having trouble deciding on my colors. My flowers are dark reds, oranges, and yellows. I didn’t want my bridesmaids in the traditional fall colors, I was thinking a cobalt blue or a clover green. Which would look best with the flowers?
Angela,
It would look amazing against either one. I would have my bridesmaids try on each color and see which looks best with their skintone. The cobalt paired with the fall colors will give a slightly bolder look and the clover green will give a subtle elegance.
Angela,
Here are 2 boards with your colors to show you what it can look like.
Thanks so much. That helps a lot.
