Inspirational Ideas for Winter Wedding Flowers

After all those wild colors of summer and fall, brides often wonder what defines a winter wedding bouquet or floral arrangement. Fortunately, that's not hard to work out: just read on!

But note: you probably have more options for flower varieties than you think, with most major wedding flowers now available year-round.

That doesn't mean that they're the same price year-round, though. And if you set your date too close to a major holiday, your floral prices could shoot through the roof.

Design Ideas for Winter Flowers

Chrysthemum Christmas BouquetMost florists agree: the key to a wintry bouquet or centerpiece is a narrow palette. Unlike fall, which happily tosses together pinks with peach and brown and burgundy with orange and yellow, winter wedding flowers often involve only one color, not counting white.

But what they might lack in color, they more than make up for in sparkle, elegance and  innovation.

Some surprising flowers are perfect for winter bouquets: tulips and Gerber daisies in red, white or burgundy, for example. They deliver solid blocks of color that really make the look work.

Also, bouquet picks and brooches  play a big role here, with crystal or pearl pins often adding sparkle to  stephanotis, deep red roses, and the calyx of mini-callas.

The bouquet wrap itself might be a glittering silver or gold ribbon. Or it might be Christmas red (even plaid!), or an icy blue announcing a Winter Wonderland theme.

Of course, with Winter brides often marching to the beat of their own drummers (who else would plan a snow-season event but a creative thinker?), you'll often see alternatives to the traditional florals, such as bridesmaids toting wreaths, lanterns, or pomanders down the aisle … or even crystal bouquets in silver, gold or blue.

Hot Winter Looks, from Classic to Modern

Some of the most popular winter bouquets flow from palettes of white and red, white and burgundy, or white and ivory — or for Winter Wonderland weddings, white and blue. Here's some of the looks you’re likely to see, from the traditional to adventurous.

Traditional

Red or white bouquets made up of roses, mini callas or amaryllis.
White and ivory bouquets mixed with generous quantities of dark green foliage.

All-white or white and blue bouquets with an ice-blue wrap.

Modern

White anemones with black centers in a shiny white wrap.
Burgundy and crisp white color blocking bouquets with lots of contrast.

Eclectic

Bouquets using interesting foliage or wood such as pussy willows, silver dollar plants, Scottish highland thistles, pheasant feathers or feather collars.

Below are some of the most important colors seen in winter flowers ... and blooms that help you pull off a holiday look.

Burgundy

In winter, Burgundy looks luscious paired with red (for a sultry look) or bright white (more modern). Here are some more beautiful burgundy blooms and foliage to grace your arrangements:

Roses: Black Magic, Black Beauty, Black Bacarra
Tulips: Queen of Night, Black Parrot, Black Hero
Deep Purple Stock
Mini Callas: Schwartz, Black Star, Maroon Sensation
Maroon Astilbe
Leucadendron
Burgundy Lemon Leaves
Burgundy Dahlias

Red

It doesn't take much to give a red bouquet a distinct holiday twist.  Add some red berries and a hint of cedar, and you’re there. Try an all-red bouquet (even the wrap!) for a style statement, or sneak in a bit of Christmas plaid. Some favorite red blooms for the holidays:

Roses: Grand Prix, Red Berlin, Classy, Charlotte, Estelle, Gigolo
Tulips: Oscar, Burgundy Lace, Merry Christmas
Red Amaryllis
Red  Poinsettias
Crimson Cockscomb (Celosia)
Red-Tipped Hydrangeas
Red Carnations
Red Gerber Daisies
Red Hypericum Berries or Winterberries

white winter bouquets

White Or Ivory

Not only are all-white bouquets the height of style right now, they’re picture-perfect for winter weddings.  Mix up various blooms (all white or cream), add some sparkle, and weave in very dark foliage for contrast. Now you have a timeless holiday bouquet that couldn’t look more regal against a white fur shrug. Here are some white and ivory blooms that won't steer you wrong:

Roses: Bianca, Ariana, Clear Ocean, Escimo,  Iceberg, Silver Fox, Vendela
Tulips: Hybernia, Swan Wings
White Amaryllis
Mini Callas: Crystal Blush
White Anemones
White Gerbers
Casa Blanca Lilies, White Oriental Lilies
White Poinsettias
White Lisianthus
White Spray Mums and Spider Mums
White Carnations
White Alstromeria
White Freesia

Green Foliage

Just a few sprigs of the right greenery can communicate ‘winter wedding’ at a glance — without going over the top.  Here are a few gorgeous charmers, particularly skilled at setting off an otherwise all-white bouquet.

Pine Sprigs
Flat Cedar
Carolina Sapphire
Holly
Bupleurum Leaves
Lemon Leaves
Magnolia Leaves
Pittosporum
Ivy
Green Berzillia Berries
Green Winterberry

Blue

White by itself is a gorgeous way to say Winter Wonderland Wedding. But if you want add a bit of blue to your blooms, here are some contenders.

Light Blue Hydrangea
Blue Scabiosa (Pincushion Flower)
Blue Salvia
Blue Anemones
Blue Muscari
Blue Frangipani
Blue Hortensia
Blue Ceanothus

blue flowers

Silver

A touch of natural silver in the form of foliage can push an all-white bouquet to a whole new level of sublime. Bring out your bouquet’s best with these outstanding choices:

Silver Pittosporum
Silver Dollar Eucalyptus
Lunaria (Silver Dollar Plants)
Dusty Miller

silver foliage

Gold

A subtle hint of gold in a rich red or burgundy bouquet amounts to beauty that might almost seem too great in a less splendid time of year.

Unlike the silver accents above which are all-natural, these are materials sprayed a rich, smooth gold. But the results are truly stunning.  Try choosing from:

Gold Ruscus
Gold Sprayed Berries
Gold Eucalptus
Gold Holly

gold foliage

Now that we've covered the most popular styles and colors in bouquets, let's not forget the other things that set the scene. Wood, for example, in the form of iced branches or twigs. And a winter wedding calls for a generous groups of flickering candles.

I am getting married on December 27 of this year. My bridesmaids are wearing a dark rich purple and the groomsmen are wearing gray suits with purple vests. I want our wedding to have a winter wonderland feel. How can I incorporate this in my wedding with the colors? My dress is white with silver beading.

im gettin married xmas eve of this year and im obviously havin a xmas wedding. im looking for ideas to keep the regular wedding traditions but making it “christmasy” at the same time, but not an overkill.lol. for example instead of ring bearer pillows im doing small velvet christmas gift boxes for the rings. instead of rice i was thinking fake snow or something? instead of flowers girls leavin rose petals, maybe fake snow as well or…?? instead of flower girl baskets, any christmasy alternatives?? i dont know but would love some suggestions on these little details. all the websites help with cakes, flowers, centerpieces, etc. but i cant find ideas for the small things….hopefully help is out there :) lol

ashley,
*christmas wedding
*christmas wedding board

at my local craft store i have seen baskets that look like they are made out of peppermint. another idea is have a simple basket and have the flowergirls hand out candy canes to the guests on the aisle row. then set out centerpieces of candy canes for everyone to have( very budget friendly and you could consider silver bowls of solid candy canes around rim with small peppermints in bowl to fill it up. i would check with the venue on rules about throwing fake snow. if they dont allow it have candy cane striped candles setting down onto a bed of fake snow in glass urns. it is not christmas without jingle bells have your ringbearer tote one of those leather strips with jingle bells. or have each flowergirl with jingle bells on her shoes that way they would ring coming in. serve hot cocoa and cider, that will surely get everyone in the spirit. for your aisle decor instead of candles why not rent street lamps like you see on old fashioned christmas shows with a little flowing red velvet ribbon? a main theme you could consider is make your wedding actually resemble a christmas park, rent a couple benches with the street lamps for the reception, evergreen trees lit up with lights are a great room filler and stunning.

My fiance and I are going to be getting married on December 10th, 2010 and we are actually considering the Silver and Sapphire blue colors. Any ideas for blue flowers that are more well known?

penny, by all means have a bouquet!! and a boutonniere. But better yet have a single flower bouquet. your fave flower example a rose enhanced by greenery and ribbon. its quite beautiful!! pick a color and flower that means the most to you. or if you are religious, carry a rosary (catholic) or a simple bible adorned with a small spray of flowers. here is a fun little board with some great ideas!! love this simple board. to me it shows what a wedding is about. the 2 of you!! :D it would be fun to go ahead and have the cake too. a small cake to accompany dinner. sounds wonderful! i wish you the best of luck!

tabitha, take advantage of day after christmas sales. for white lights. you can paint branches and sprinkle crystals on them set in large pots, and wrap with shimmery white fabric. white linens on tables with wooden bowls or crates (keep rustic looking) set free pinecones on beds of evergreens and sprinkle with fake snow,or can make icy like branches (if your venue has low ceilings , otherwise you’ll need to incorporate a few taller centerpieces. make those white flowers set in food dye tinted water (pale blue ).

i would add lots of greenery sprinkled with small amount of fake snowor ( to keep it from looking cold) to this scene hopefully all that can be free for you as well, if you live near a place you can gather yourself. i cant stress enough on the food offer colorful foods. offer hot cocoa add candy canes for an added visual. (white or striped.) wrap you bouquet in a colored fabric ( like in link below) have bm in a jewel tone color wear again dress. use candles galore and diy luminaries ( simple white bags filled with sand and votives to dress up outside walkway, make evergreen wreaths and fill containers with fresh greenery with the ice crystals.! if in daytime then axe the candles unless your venue can be darkened (candles will be budget friendly) also paper lanterns fill up a tall ceiling too.

renaye, see:

* Wedding Flash Back (burgundy, musk, stone and green)

* Stationer Inspiration Board: Checkerboard

* Landers Wedding: burgundy and pink

since your having the burgundy and cream wedding put your girls in burgundy it looks sooo beautiful and elegant. i love the dress pic i posted. the color i would add would be either blush pink and/or crisp green. these 2 colors make it pop!! this would actually go year round and your in luck burgundy looks great on most skintones!! this would be a dress color that is verstile and wear again friendly.with burgundy and cream you really dont need another color other than tons of greenery and crystals for sparkle, unless you just want it. the 2 colors stand on their own. i wouldnt go with the hot pink i looked at pics and i think a blush would look best.smile! i do have another suggestion, if i may, girls in burgundy dresses with creamy tulips and tinges of burgundy on them. (this is my fave look for your wedding you can still add blush pink, it wouldnt take away)okay imagine the dress with the second pic top row of the bouquet board. and your dress with 2nd pic 2nd row. talk about gorgeous. now add the bridal bouquet flowers in burgundy vases setting on top of ivory linens and candlelight. see the crisp green i am talking about? its in the orchids. you can find cheaper flowers with the same effect. lilies and tulips are bicolor and there are cream roses with burgundy tips or centers. also consider blush pink dresses with burgundy sash, or vice versa. i got a couple more pics for you!! be right back!

Renaye, hi!! i got this pic from jim hjelm’s website. check out that dress! plus another decor look at the way they have it decorated, in some pics you can see the deeper mauve/burgundy. this is simple, breathtaking and beautiful!! it speaks volumes!! this would cut out a lot of decor planning and time. you cant go wrong with this beautiful scheme, if your marrying in winter add evergreens. think roses peeking up from winter greenery. winter calls for the ivory linens and wintry look. so that will simplify your tables just add colored flowers. ope my ideas helped!!

Susan,
Hire a wedding planner to help you. They actually contract with vendors to reduce your pricing (even more on off season) and vendors usually kick them back most of the fee you would pay so you only have to come up with the remainder. If not, have a do-it-yourself wedding. Go to your local craft store and buy a bunch of white ostrich feathers. Then go to Save on Crafts and buy the 20 inch (tall) vases and some flora-lights….with those centerpieces on the tables and there will be nothing else necessary. They are stunning.

Other ideas would be white or glitter sprayed twig centerpieces (tall vases again). Have some poinsettias for decor at cake and card tables….Maybe craft your own favors tooo :D Not to difficult or expensive to make bulk christmas ornaments and put tags on them saying thank you to the guests. The big silver or cranberry red glitter ball ornaments are really festive and classy or go with a crystal wedding bell ornament for the more elegant look. Do you know anyone who can carve ice…Have a small ice-sculpture somewhere. String lights - so much can be done with winter!
