Choosing Your Wedding Colors: A Guide for Designing Brides

There's no question: choosing wedding colors is one of the earliest, trickiest tasks a bride has to cross off the list. You can't even talk your florist until you've worked this out.

And even if you're getting the cake from Ron Ben-Israel, he's not going to ask you whether your wedding theme draws elements from 14th century Venetian court dress ... he'll ask you about your colors.

A mere generation ago, planning the wedding was a lot easier. It expressed your social class, and your parents' tastes. Even if they had particular ideas, the market couldn't offer much in terms of individual design. But these days, your wedding expresses your personal style in a way it never has before. Translation? The pressure's on!

Sussing Out Your Style

Some brides can solve the color question without thinking too much about style. They might have a life-long love for purple. Or, their venue might have strong hues they need to coordinate with. Or, when they picture their wedding, they already see their bridesmaids awash in certain colors. Easiest of all: sometimes they already have a theme in mind.

For others, it's not that simple. Still, you can quickly pin down the styles that get your heart beating almost as fast as your fiancé does. Does Martha Stewart's relaxed, preppy look command your undying devotion? Do you pray you can someday actually subscribe to H&M magazine? Did Vera Wang's modern, moody Bolshevik collections incite heavy breathing? This gives you some major clues.

Home Decor

Destination: Home, Sweet Home

Still, even if you don't consider yourself a fashionista or a Martha devotee, all's not lost. Instead, let's turn our eyes back to home and hearth.

Many brides aren't just looking forward to a wedding, they're also buzzing with anticipation over the dream house they plan to share with their beloved. And in the process of hunting down this love nest, most spent lots time mulling over their personal style. What did you picture in your mind's eye as the right setting for your new life together? A rangy colonial with a gabled roof? A warm, log-sided farmhouse with a wood stove in the kitchen? Or did you dream of finding a downtown loft bursting with recessed lighting and monochromatics, and flip through the new IKEA catalog to pick out your cabinets?

Or consider: do you dream of filling your home with antiques you can pass down to your children? Look to seasonal-inspired color schemes and ballrooms. Plan to drape your bedroom ceiling in yards of mosquito netting? A fairytale wedding drenched in candelabras, gold braid and gauzy swags might fit the bill. Collect exotic objects from all over the planet? Try an art museum for your setting, and a sophisticated or daring palette.

And if you're one of those eclectic types who pairs Amish rocking chairs with aboriginal artifacts, use this old designer trick: think of the last bit of art or furniture you bought to spruce up your house. That tells you what's on your mind lately.

Pink & Champagne Wedding

Your Secret Romantic Style

So, you know your domestic style is Eclectic Contemporary. Congratulations: that means you're holding a black-and-white wedding with chartreuse accents and ostrich feathers in a huge SoHo loft, right?

Hold it: not so fast. Why? Because many brides have a special romantic style that exists in a universe by itself. You might be thrilled picking out Art Deco style spaceships for your pendant lighting. And yet, when it comes your wedding, you might picture something a lot more traditional.

So even if you're the most fashion-forward girl on the block, take a moment to consider whether your wedding vision doesn't actually go back in time by few hundred years. You might secretly harbor a special place in your heart for New England autumns, Victorian elegance, English cottage style, or even timeless fairy tales. And if that's true, rest assured you've got plenty of company.

The Gown's the Guide

But how do you tell if this stylistic gotcha's operating in your case? Here's the secret: go get your dress.

For many brides, The Dress is a journey that starts with many preconceptions, but ends in the unexpected. Finding the dress is usually a case of recognizing it once you've tried it on, not knowing ahead of time what you'll wear.

And once you've found it, the dress will offer some big clues about your Romantic style. Captured by a demure ivory gown covered in Alençon lace, with a button-back closure? Start your search with pastels and neutrals that suit a 1930's vintage or feminine garden wedding. Fell hard for a sleek, diamond white v-neck that's all about the lines? Investigate the crisper, more playful palettes we see today, such as black and white, aqua, bright pinks, lime green and corals.Seasonal

Adjust for Geography, Venue and Season

Now that you've unearthed your personal style, it's time to look outward. If your style's traditional, for example, start with a hotel ballroom. If you want a strong seasonal feel for fall, try a rustic barn. Cultivated gardens go well with traditional, Martha-esque tints. Tents weddings are a blank slate: you can make them as classic or brazenly modern as your heart desires.

Geography, too, plays a role in your colors. Tropical affairs in the blinding sun are often showcases for the brightest hues of all: coral and orchid, for example, or aqua and orange. Evening white-tie affairs in New York City? Not so much.

Many brides are in the middle, and want to weave in at least a seasonal hint. Fortunately for them, most seasons have palettes both traditional and modern. For example, a classic summer wedding might feature cornflower blue or sage, where a modern one draws on fuchsia and lime green, or orange, pink and black.

Even flowers help set the style. For example, a profusion of pinks in a bouquet of roses and peonies says English cottage. Mini-sunflowers and chrysanthemums says New England country. On the other hand, the color blocking in a hand-tied bouquet of purple callas is strongly modern.

Essential Color-Choosing Tools

Now you've got a style in mind, let's get to the art of actually picking colors. Here are a few can't-miss tools.

Color Schemer

You'll need to create a free account, but this wonderful site has user-created palettes aplenty that you can search by keyword. Once you've registered, hit the "search schemes" button and enter words that fit your vision, like "fall,""garden," "sunset," "winter." Or free-associate with adjectives like "nautical," "peaceful," "modern," "preppy" or even "trendy." We promise, you'll be hooked.

Sherwin-Williams Color Generator

Hit their site, and choose "FIND COLOR." Click on any color that draws you, and you'll automatically pull up two accent colors that complement it. Cool.

Big Huge Labs Palette Generator

Have a photo on your hard drive that seems to capture your wedding's heart and soul? Upload it to a palette generator, which will kick out most of the main hues involved. Unless you're on the beach, use one of the more neutral, calming colors as a primary (e.g., use it for bridesmaids or table linens), and the more nervous, high-energy colors as accents (use these in table napkins, chair sashes, ribbons, and some of your flowers.)

Make a Mood Board

Once you've narrowed down some favorites, start grabbing photos (for your own personal use, of course). Make a special folder on your hard drive, and save photos that seem to fit the colors, setting and season you're going for. If you've got any photo editing software, start putting them together in one big image. This will tell you more than thousands of words how your look will play out.

Purple Green

Making the Most of Your Choices

Now that you've got your colors, how can you really make them shine? A problem that plagues some brides is an oversized fear of chaos. Although it's simple, most weddings aren't at their best when the groomsmen's vests and ties exactly match the bridesmaids' gowns, which in turn match the bride's sash.

So, choose your colors wisely and stick with them, but strive for designing more than matching. Brown and ivory are neutrals when chosen thoughtfully, so use their many shades for a sophisticated, monochromatic look. If the bridesmaids wear mocha or persimmon, the men will look great in chocolate brown. And even if the flowers call for a palette of orange and yellow, let a little green or cream sneak in for dimension. Check for too much of a good thing: when the entire wedding party wears matching brown or black, the effect can be overpowering.

And They Lived Happily Ever After ...

When all's said and done, you're sure to have a great feeling about your colors, and how they fit your personal style. Even if the scheme you hit on isn't "I've loved that all my life!", it might be "I never would have thought of that, but I love these together!"

Picking your colors is a journey, just like finding the dress, or knocking all those planning items off your checklist. But hitting on the right colors, theme and setting for the ultimate expression of your own Romantic style? That can be the pleasure of a lifetime.

Hi it’s me again. I’m emailing to find out some info for my friend. They like burnt orange and gold, and she wants to add mocha to it. Do you have any links or pictures they can see so that they can see how it looks? thanks.

    Hi,
I am getting married Nov.6, 2010, i am glad i came across your website. am planning a garden wedding for Nov. 3rd, 2010 in Nigeria. I’m thinking of using Red and Pink but the garden is all green. I want the groom to put on a black suit and a red shirt so also the best man. so what color of tie should they go for? as for the bridesmaids and maid of honor what do you think they should wear. I have just two friends, one will be the maid of honor while the other will be the bridesmaid, so also my fiance.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Sarah,
red and pink will be a great contrast to the green.I was thinking how classy it would be with a white shirt and red tie. If you want the red shirt consider a black or a red tie( or a nice
      * like here
      * this is very nice
      * something like this would work with a print

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Sarah,
Consider matching the dress to the tie in this case.

        • sarah

Hi thanks for the response and links. Can i change the garden wedding to another venue? Maybe a hall or just an open space without flowers in it. Cos i really love the color red. can u make further suggestion on the background to use red. The hall i am thinking of is painted cream.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Sarah,
Of course! I highly lean to a 2 color/color scheme. It looks romantic and clean looking. What shade of red do you like? Also do you like modern or vintage etc? If you have a pic of the link along with what you like and I will get to work on some pics/ideas. Look forward to your reply! :D
oh yeah you mentioned no flowers? overall or in reception only?

  4. Melissa

Hi one of the colours i’ve chosen for my wedding is blue, but i can’t seem to find two other colours to go with the blue. can you help? i’m having a romantic theme. thanks.

  5. sueann

Can someone please tell me were I can find white sparkly or sequend cloth to cover my tables for thr reception!!!!! I cant find any

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Sueann,
I would first start looking at where they rent table linens. First contact your local store/stores, if they don’t have it then try the next place closest.
Another option is to use white table linens and buy sequin/embroidered white fabric. You could get someone to sew an edge on it and use it over the white cloths.

  6. Keke

    Hi,
I am getting married in November and have decided on a colour theme of burnt orange and gold, or tangerine and gold (just in case the burnt orange is hard to obtain). I am however in limbo because I am not sure if these colours will complement each other. Your thoughts and comments will be greatly appreciated.

  7. Sharee

The dress on the left is the Blush color my dress will be. What 2 colors would you recommend that would go with that Blush colored dress and would be a romantic theme wedding?

  8. Sharee

Here’s the color Blush I’m talking about so you can have a better understanding of the color.

  9. Sharee

Hi! I’m trying to choose a unique romantic color scheme for my 2011 Spring wedding. The color I want for sure is Blush. I don’t like White so I won’t be wearing a White wedding dress but the color Blush instead. However I’m having a hard time deciding on 2 more colors. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  10. Cynthia

Has anyone ever used black folding chairs for a beach wedding of 150 people? How would that look with the bridesmaids wearing black dresses?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Cynthia,
Black is a very classy color for weddings. I am afraid the black chairs with the black dresses might look “gloomy” for a beach wedding. If you do decide to use them make sure you have enough bright or light colored flowers against it. I think I would use white chairs.

    • Jo

Keep in mind if this is a daytime wedding, the dark chairs will get super-hot in the sun.

  11. Ewoenam

Hello! I need a powerful colour combination for my upcoming wedding. This colours should be four, including white.

  12. Stacey@FavorIdeas

    Brides,
I was riding and enjoying the day today. Decided to go out to the lake. I wanted to make a super simple lakefront wedding board that was fun and the kids/adults could fish, swim, go tubing, boating etc. With BBQ sauce favors and a grilling reception. This would be a fun way to celebrate.

  13. Josephine Popoola

Thanks Stacy, finally I have confidence in my color combo. I have attached the pic again as a reminder. Now I really don’t know how to go about the color arrangements at the indoor reception.
1.I have attached a sample of the ceiling decoration I want to but I don’t know which of the colors to use for this( tho I am thinking different shades of the orange but afraid it may be too loud and tacky. I have also thought of a mix of all the colors (olive, orange and coral with a touch of mild yellow) but I don’t know if that will look as elegant as I want.
    2. Also, I attached another picture showing the decoration on the main back drop (main wall facing the audience ) but I am not sure which two colors to use for the interlocking design. My hall is very similar to the one in this pic too.
    3. Also which color should i use for tablecloth, runners and napkins, chair covers and chair sashes?
    4. Lastly I am thinking that the bridal maids should wear olive green shade close to yellow like the one you sent to me. what color of tie do you think the men should wear, i think the olive will be too dark for them.

    Thank you so much.
    Josephine

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Josephine,
I love the design in the reception pic. I would do a table exactly like that. I found this pic cause I am sensing your not sure about the posted pics maybe you want it more subtle. I might have something.
      * check this out
      * more pics

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Josephine,
What color tuxes were they gonna wear?
Also what is your main color scheme is it the olive with the coral, orange, yellow? This would be amazing against chocolate brown linens.
        * like here
        * also think about champagne linens like here ( except in your colors)

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Josephine,
          * look at this one! It has lots of elegance. keep the ceiling decor white with lots strands of fairy lights. You could bring in pin or up lighting around the room in a shade of orange. Would be gorgeous!

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Josephine,
          * look at the New York Library wedding. Check out the florals there and set against muted coral linen. Look how they incorporated the green here, in the florals and kept everything else elegant and simple yet rich and vibrant. it is a fall wedding but you could use green flowers or berries instead.

        • Josephine Popoola

Hay Stacy thanks a lot. Yes my main color scheme will be Olive(combination of light or yellowish looking olive mixed with some dark olive) and Orange with just a touch of yellow and coral. I really like them against the chocolate brown linen- that pic is really gorgeous BUT just wondering if that wont come out to be too many colors, what do you think?

Also the guys will be wearing Grey suits. So what do you think I should do for the girls if I am intending to mix them up in 2 colors?

Also, I attached a picture in my previous post showing the decoration on the main back drop (main wall facing the audience ) but I am not sure which two colors to use for the interlocking design. My hall is very similar to the one in this pic too.

          Thank you so so much

          Josephine

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Josephine,
I might have foudn you something. If you were interested in using olive linens. This is REALLY nice.
          * look at this very elegant. incorporate pale yellow and touches of coral in centerpeices

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Josephine,
You said the guys will be in grey? I am thinking with the other colors that may be to many. After looking at the other pics mixed with the olive green it may not go so well. If your using grey attire it would look fantastic using coral linens with the centerpieces and adding olive green berries and lush greenery to bring in the green. Then have the girls wear a shade of grey or platinum. even coral. For the backdrop you could do a shade of white with a shade of orange or just white with lights then put lush florals on the head table. also grey linens would look AMAZING!

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Josephine,
Unless they are wearing a dark grey like in this pic…
          * here

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Josephine,
I have made you a few boards with different color dresses.I wanted to find the best combos for the grey. After looking at the grey dresses especially with the coral accent I thought that looked good.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Josephine,
last board. I studied the pics you gave me with the boards I made. For the draping I do think that should be left white or the lightest orange( if you use peach put that with the white for the soft effect) Let me know which one you liked best. I couldnt find an olive favor box so I left it with silver. All dresses are from AlfredAngelo.com you can design them yourself with colors.

        • Josephine Popoola

Stacy, I really really like the Grey with coral accent BUT I think it changes my whole color scheme totally. I still would want the colorful/ bright combination of Olive, Orange and Yellow. Do you think I can still stick to that if the guys do a darker Grey as you said earlier or prevail on my finance to do black ? If yes, then will the girls be able to do any of my colors or will it be too much going on and which of the colors on the girls will tone it down a little? I was thinking mild yellow or coral or even a light shade Olive. what do you think?

          Thanks Josephine

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Josephine,
If you have the guys in darker grey that would work. I would put the girls in a dress that flatters theie skintone best. I personally like the bridal party using the grey too cause you will have silverware, etc. in the reception hall and it will pull some more of a grey/silver color in. I wan’t sure how I would like the grey until I put the board together. If the girls dont wear the grey very well I would put them in the olive or coral either one. The olive dresses would tone it down and be a stunning backdrop for the mixed color bouquets.
          * look at these tips

Since you are using oranges and corals, you could get away with staying in that color family just make it a subtle coral or even peach. You said you were having oranges, coral, etc.
          * like here peach dresses wouldnt look out of place

  14. Linda

    Hi Stacy,
I am getting married on the beach this December. I really, really need help picking my colors. I really like mocha and beige or white but I struggling finding another color. Can you make help me out?
    Thanks, Linda

  15. Michelle

Can you please help… I have david’s bridal “GUAVA” color dresses… but we don’t have a men’s wearhouse here in hawaii…. does silver match? and what kind of flowers should we go with? I like daises, roses and lilies… but will it match? can you make me a “board” too? thank you! :D

  16. Stacey@FavorIdeas

    Brides,
Wanted to post a new board today. Was inspired by classic vintage with a modern twist.

  17. Ashley

    Hi Stacey,
I was hoping you could give me some table ideas for my reception. I decided on blue and hot pink as my colors, but now I’m trying to decide how to do my tables. Would pink tableclothes and blue napkins be too much? Should I stick to white tableclothes with pink and blue runners? I want it to look cute, not tacky. Let me know what you think…thanks!! Oh, and my reception is outdoors, in a grassy area, if that helps with anything!

  18. Josephine Popoola

Yes Stacy, I am thinking Orange and Olive. I have attached a pic showing Orange and Olive with coral but I am thinking of using mild yellow or peach instead of the coral as the 3rd color. what do you think? Also, for the BM, I am thinking mild yellow or coral depending on which one I go for as a 3rd color. or do you think I should do orange or olive for the BM? They are all dark skinned and the wedding is in Nigeria.

Or how do you think I can combine the colors? I really like Orange and Olive. I like brown too and red. I am not stuck on Olive and orange if you can give me a better idea with any of these other colors. I like colorful but classy and elegant. Thanks soo much. I think finding your site gives me 60% more confidence cos I have been so nervous with the color choices as I have no idea at all when it comes to colors.

    Josephine

    Thanks so much

  19. Judy Spencer

I need help in finding the righ color for my daughter wedding in June. Her color is ivory, bridemaids color persimmon, and the hostee color champagne. I was looking for a color close to persimmon(lighter or darker). I can not find anything in the orange family yet. Any suggestions about a particular color similar to persimmon?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Judy,
I would use apricot or peach. It would give a very clean elegant look with persimmon, ivory, and champagne. it is perfect for a June wedding. You could also add some very pale yellow and blush pink to the mix too.

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Judy,
Here is a board I did using the persimmon, champagne, and peach.

  20. Odi

    hello Stacey,

i was glad when i came across your website. am planning an indoor wedding for july 3rd in nigeria. Am yet to choose a colour. i want something realy really striking. i love a 3 colour combination. but i have two colours now-yellow and gray what colour do you think i should add to it?.
I want the groom to put on a gray suit and also the best man. so what colour of shirt and tie should they go for? as for the bridesmaids and chief bridesmaid what so you think they should wear. please i need pictures of decoration, bouquet, bridal dress, hair piece, e.t.c. that i can incorporate my colours. thanks

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Odi,
First I would like to ask what other colors you like, it will help me narrow down some ideas. Yellow and gray actually dont need another color but using a coral with the yellow and having the bm’s dress in gray would look amazing.
      * here is the yellow and gray
      * I couldn’t fing coral but here is orange

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Odi,
Here are the pics I found that might help with the colors.

        • Odi

          HI, Stacey,
thanks so much. i ve decided to work with with yellow, gray and white. I want my BM to wear a grey gown with a yellow sash/ribbon, yellow heels and purse and a gray hair pack, the grooms men grey suit/black with a white shirt and a grey tie,my chief brides maid will wear a yellow gown with a gray sash, yellow hair piece, gray heels and my bouquet a combination of all 3 colours. Is the arrangement ok? would it be nice if i wear a white gown and have a yellow or gray ribbon on?

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Odi,
It sounds very nice. I think your gown with a colored sash would work well into your color scheme. Gray would be my pick.

        • Odi

          hi stacey,

thanks for your ideas. can i wear a coloured shoe? my gown will have a little touch of yellow rose and i want a matching shoe. will it be nice to wear a coloured shoe?
i have attached a picture of my gown(sleeveless) i ordered today. i want a sleeve to be attached to it. you will find also the type of sleeve i need. and on that pic though its not too clear it has a touch of blue on the chest(joining of sleeve to the gown) and the waist. i also want them to fix my colour yellow on it too.i also attached the shoe i will be wearing. please let me know what you think about it. thanks

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Odi,
Oh yes! I always think a colored shoe is great for a bride. It gives a little personality!

        • Odi

how about my gown combination. do you like it…. am on the slimmer side that is why i went for a ball gown. am of the same size with the lady on the other picture-the dark complexioned. am making a yellow white hair fascinator with grey stones will it be nice. i have attached a picked sample my costumer will work on my colours

        • Odi

i need idea on the colours to stick to for my bouquet and a design. though my wedding colours are yellow, gray and white and my gown will have a touch of yellow, my fiance is wearing a grey suit with a yellow tie. what do you advise as regards my bouquet. remeber am wearing the yellow heels above and my accessories are going to be a combination of yellow and white.
i have also attached two pictures of hair piece which do you think will go well with my gown.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Odi,
I think a white bouquet with a yellow ribbon wrapped around stems would be beautiful or just a very simple clutch of yellow roses. No ribbons flowing. And the combo for your dress/hair fascinator will be very nice.

        • Odi

          Stacey,
thanks. what colour mix do you suggest for the chief bridesmaid.bridesmaids and groomsmen. knowing that yellow is already reflected in me and my fiance is going on a yellow tie coupled with grey suit and a white shirt. how can i alternate the colours for others.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Odi,
Actually I would put them in gray maybe with yellow heels. Have the guys in classic grey with white shirts.
          * pics
          * more pics

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Odi,
you could even have the groomsmen in black with grey ties that way the groom stands out. Or have the ties different.
          *real weddings
I always recommend seeing which color goes with their skintone the best.

        • odi

          hi stacey,

pls can my groom wear a grey suit, white shirt and a yellow tuxedo(waist coat,)?. the groomsmen will be on blackk with grey ties as suggested by you. thanks so much. i need to know if the combination is ok.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Odi,
I would have the guys in the black with grey and the groom in black with yellow tie or white tie. The grey suit would be okay but he wouldnt look as classy next to the black unless you go with a more luxurious fabric in the grey suit. Or even a grey suit with a black tie, mix it up a little. I think I would go with the same black suits with yellow or white tie and yellow boutonniere.

    Stacey,

I’m having a beach wedding in July 2010. I finally decided on my colors – slate blue, baby blue and beige. The girls will be wearing slate blue bridesmaids dresses and the guys baby blue shirts with light beige linen pants. Would this work? Is it possible if you can make up a board with these colors? What color flowers do you suggest?

    Thanks!
    Liz

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Liz,
Here is your board let me know if this is going in the right direction. If not, let me know what colors you like. :D

      • Liz

        Stacey

Thank you so much!! It looks beautiful!!! What other flower colors do you suggest? I love cala lillies.

          Liz,
I think I would stick with the blues, greens, whites, the green orchids have touches of fuschia in center so you could accent with that too.

Hi! I am having a really hard time deciding how to decorate my reception hall. The space is pretty big, and we have a very small budget. What I wanted to do was drape tool/fabric under the ceiling and put clear rope lights in them, but we wont have enough to cover the entire ceiling. Would just doing a small section in the middle of the room look ok?! the ceiling is covered in tacky florescent lights, which will be turned off for dancing. ( They have small dim lights on the walls) but Im stuck for how to decorate the rest of the space.Colors are Wysteria and Sangria and a little bit of silver and we want to stick with a spring theme. I attatched some pics of the space! The tables will NOT be layed out like that for the reception.

    Hi,

I am getting married Oct. 22, 2011, I love fall and the colors of fall. We live in Iowa and I can not think of a color scheme for my wedding. I really like the deep reds and oranges of fall, but am finding it hard to get bridesmaids dresses in those colors. Any ideas??? Also, my fiance and I are a little country, we are simple, fun people, but country. I want to have an elegant wedding, but something that also reflects our styles.

    Thanks!!

Hi, I really need help with my colors. My wedding is on July 10 and I am really running out of time on bridesmaids dresses. I keep changing.. I was initially looking at Orange and Olive green with a touch of yellow and now I am thinking of replacing the yellow with coral or peach. I like bright and multi but I don’t want it too loud. friends think the combination is odd. Also a bit confused as to what color the maids dresses will be.

      Josephine,
I would go with whatever the bm’s feel comfy in and what looks great with their skintone. I think it may be too many colors for a dress with the 3 colors. I would pick a solid color to set bright blooms against. Try the olive green first. It is a basic and elegant color for brighter florals. I am not sure what your color scheme is. Is it orange and olive? If I know your colors I could narrow it down. :D

      • Josephine

Yes Stacy, thinking Orange and Olive. I have attaches a pic showing Orange and Olive with coral but I am thinking of using mild yellow or peach rather than the coral as a 3rd color .what do you think? Also I am thinking the BM should do Orange dress or mild yellow. They are all dark skinned.
        Thanks so much

          Good day,

I am planning to use burnt orange, gold and olive green for my wedding is that a good idea

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Julianna,
          Beautiful combo!

      • Josephine Popoola

Or how do you think I can combine the colors? I really like Orange and Olive. I like brown too and red. I am not stuck on Olive and orange if you can give me a better idea with any of these colors. I like colorful but classy and elegant. Thanks soo much.

          Josephine,
I am inlove with your picture! I would do that color scheme hands down! It is brighter colors and elegant! with this color scheme you could easily add pale yellow and peach into the oranges. Just make sure the colors flow well. Not TOO much contrast in colors will give a more elegant feel.

This has subtle ranges from red to pink, peach, and a dash of green in the florals.beautiful!! Make sure the girls try on those colors sometimes they are very difficult to pull off. Also with yellow no matter what color you pair it with, when photographed stands out, while the other colors, though bright, can fade into the background.

    Stacy,
I am having some trouble picking the perfect colors for my wedding. My fiance and I are getting married in the summer of next year on an island off the coast of Maine. Our ceremony will be done at a simple gazebo on a lawn with the ocean visible in the background. My fiance has a bit of a more traditional elegant style while I prefer a more simple country-style elegance. He has really been pushing blue which I think could work well with the ocean so close by, but I’m not sure which tone or what other color(s) should go with it. I’m also struggling because I am blind and have trouble understanding the different color tones beyond a basic conception of what is blue vs. red vs. yellow, etc. Nonetheless I still appreciate the importance of having a beautiful color palatte and want the colors to work perfectly together–it’s just hard for me to figure it out without lots of advice from others!

    Hi Stacey!!

My fiance’ and I finally set a date, October 16, 2010. We are planning on having an inside wedding at our church. My fiance’ is very stubborn and isn’t afraid to share his opinion lol, because of this I am having a horrible time picking out colors. Obviously it’s a fall wedding but he doesnt like the orange or yellow. I thought about doing red, he said that over used. He said he loves blue… he likes the deeper blues … i like blue and the more I think about it I really like blue but what goes with it??? I’m having so much trouble finding something I like. He also likes green and mentioned purple?? I would love to have a cute “girly” color even just as an accent color. Any help you can offer me would be amazing!!

    Thanks!
    Whitley

      Whitley,
Are you wanting to go with traditional fall colors or would you like to go with just what you like. You don’t have to use fall colors if you don’t want too. I love navy especially paired with hot pink. It is a killer combination!
      * like here
      * navy and green
      * more pics

I would compromise let him pick one color and you pick the other. For instance, he picks a shade of blue he likes and you get the girly color you want. Usually a “masculine” color like blue with a feminine color doesn’t look too girly and the guys don’t mind that so much. Plus will the church be decorated in fall decor already and will they let you take it down? Your reception venue colors, pic or link? That way I know what color schemes go well.

    Stacy,
Oh my gosh I’m so glad that I found this website!! I am getting married in July of 2011 so it’ll be a summer wedding. I was hoping to have it around 5 p.m. but the sun doesn’t start going down until 8 so it’d still be pretty sunny. It’ll be outdoors at a local gazebo surrounded with by a historic village. – I am having thee worst time picking out colors! I really hope that you can help me…I’m debating on different blues (pool&marine). I love guava, it’s gorgeous and pops…and I also like kelly green too & I’ll throw in the fact that I like yellow! Please help me I’m driving myself nuts, it shouldn’t be this difficult to pick colors and run with it!

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Brittney,
What color flowers will be in bloom at the gazebo? You will want colors that compliment the setting. With an outdoor wedding greens and pinks would work well. Your right the guava would be stunning.
      * look at this. you could have 3 of your colors
      * you could also do this paired with green or guava dresses

      * oops I found my fave! this really pops! pair this with green or guava ( make sure the dress color pairs well with their skintones, this is actually a great place to begin for a color scheme)
      * believe it or not the above is a supermarket bouquet. check the other pics to see how they did it.

      • I actually haven’t been able to see the gazebo in July, Stacy. But I posted a picture….if you can look closely it LOOKS as if there are red/orangish flowers surrounding….I’m not entirely sure how new that picture is though. I do know the people there said the gazebo will be surrounded by bushes…so I’m not sure if there’s flowers or anything. Usher’s Ferry is an entire historical village…so idk!

      • Here’s a more recent picture I’m sure. The gazebo is newly painted after the flood (green & white) and it looks as if it’s just surrounded by plain green bushes…no flowers. We could always bring our own though! & the only color I see is a shade of pink in the tree leaves. I really like your ideas of selecting the color of dresses from the bouquets. I think that Kelly Green & Guava would look good on mostly anyone! Do you know of any pictures of dresses with these schemes or possibly centerpiece/decor with the theme as well? It’d be a lot easier if I could see it tied all together :)

      • Brittney

Sorry to completely blow your ONE comment up with a million! But I would like to let you know I have decided to go with the first color scheme you sent me! The coral, icy blue & champagne! Thank you soo much for much for all the help, now I know my wedding day will be absolutely gorgeous all thanks to you! :)

    Hi,
i am in africa, I wondered if you could give me some unique color combination for light pink, my wedding is in a couple of months

  29. Ashley

So I finally made a decision on my wedding colors! We are doing blue, fuchsia and white! Way different from what I originally had in mind, but I love it! Here’s a question….what do you think of putting the bridesmaids in blue dresses with pink heels and bouquets that match the heels? I think the idea is cute, but what’s your take on it?

  30. Stacey@FavorIdeas

    Heh Brides,
Got some new boards! Got one where the bride sports a black and white damask wedding gown.

:D ;) :P   :? :love2:    more »
