And even if you're getting the cake from Ron Ben-Israel, he's not going to ask you whether your wedding theme draws elements from 14th century Venetian court dress ... he'll ask you about your colors.
A mere generation ago, planning the wedding was a lot easier. It expressed your social class, and your parents' tastes. Even if they had particular ideas, the market couldn't offer much in terms of individual design. But these days, your wedding expresses your personal style in a way it never has before. Translation? The pressure's on!
Sussing Out Your Style
Some brides can solve the color question without thinking too much about style. They might have a life-long love for purple. Or, their venue might have strong hues they need to coordinate with. Or, when they picture their wedding, they already see their bridesmaids awash in certain colors. Easiest of all: sometimes they already have a theme in mind. For others, it's not that simple. Still, you can quickly pin down the styles that get your heart beating almost as fast as your fiancé does. Does Martha Stewart's relaxed, preppy look command your undying devotion? Do you pray you can someday actually subscribe to H&M magazine? Did Vera Wang's modern, moody Bolshevik collections incite heavy breathing? This gives you some major clues.
Destination: Home, Sweet Home
Still, even if you don't consider yourself a fashionista or a Martha devotee, all's not lost. Instead, let's turn our eyes back to home and hearth. Many brides aren't just looking forward to a wedding, they're also buzzing with anticipation over the dream house they plan to share with their beloved. And in the process of hunting down this love nest, most spent lots time mulling over their personal style. What did you picture in your mind's eye as the right setting for your new life together? A rangy colonial with a gabled roof? A warm, log-sided farmhouse with a wood stove in the kitchen? Or did you dream of finding a downtown loft bursting with recessed lighting and monochromatics, and flip through the new IKEA catalog to pick out your cabinets?
Or consider: do you dream of filling your home with antiques you can pass down to your children? Look to seasonal-inspired color schemes and ballrooms. Plan to drape your bedroom ceiling in yards of mosquito netting? A fairytale wedding drenched in candelabras, gold braid and gauzy swags might fit the bill. Collect exotic objects from all over the planet? Try an art museum for your setting, and a sophisticated or daring palette.
And if you're one of those eclectic types who pairs Amish rocking chairs with aboriginal artifacts, use this old designer trick: think of the last bit of art or furniture you bought to spruce up your house. That tells you what's on your mind lately.
Your Secret Romantic Style
So, you know your domestic style is Eclectic Contemporary. Congratulations: that means you're holding a black-and-white wedding with chartreuse accents and ostrich feathers in a huge SoHo loft, right?Hold it: not so fast. Why? Because many brides have a special romantic style that exists in a universe by itself. You might be thrilled picking out Art Deco style spaceships for your pendant lighting. And yet, when it comes your wedding, you might picture something a lot more traditional.
So even if you're the most fashion-forward girl on the block, take a moment to consider whether your wedding vision doesn't actually go back in time by few hundred years. You might secretly harbor a special place in your heart for New England autumns, Victorian elegance, English cottage style, or even timeless fairy tales. And if that's true, rest assured you've got plenty of company.
The Gown's the Guide
But how do you tell if this stylistic gotcha's operating in your case? Here's the secret: go get your dress. For many brides, The Dress is a journey that starts with many preconceptions, but ends in the unexpected. Finding the dress is usually a case of recognizing it once you've tried it on, not knowing ahead of time what you'll wear.
And once you've found it, the dress will offer some big clues about your Romantic style. Captured by a demure ivory gown covered in Alençon lace, with a button-back closure? Start your search with pastels and neutrals that suit a 1930's vintage or feminine garden wedding. Fell hard for a sleek, diamond white v-neck that's all about the lines? Investigate the crisper, more playful palettes we see today, such as black and white, aqua, bright pinks, lime green and corals.
Adjust for Geography, Venue and Season
Now that you've unearthed your personal style, it's time to look outward. If your style's traditional, for example, start with a hotel ballroom. If you want a strong seasonal feel for fall, try a rustic barn. Cultivated gardens go well with traditional, Martha-esque tints. Tents weddings are a blank slate: you can make them as classic or brazenly modern as your heart desires.Geography, too, plays a role in your colors. Tropical affairs in the blinding sun are often showcases for the brightest hues of all: coral and orchid, for example, or aqua and orange. Evening white-tie affairs in New York City? Not so much.
Many brides are in the middle, and want to weave in at least a seasonal hint. Fortunately for them, most seasons have palettes both traditional and modern. For example, a classic summer wedding might feature cornflower blue or sage, where a modern one draws on fuchsia and lime green, or orange, pink and black.
Even flowers help set the style. For example, a profusion of pinks in a bouquet of roses and peonies says English cottage. Mini-sunflowers and chrysanthemums says New England country. On the other hand, the color blocking in a hand-tied bouquet of purple callas is strongly modern.
Essential Color-Choosing Tools
Now you've got a style in mind, let's get to the art of actually picking colors. Here are a few can't-miss tools.Color Schemer
You'll need to create a free account, but this wonderful site has user-created palettes aplenty that you can search by keyword. Once you've registered, hit the "search schemes" button and enter words that fit your vision, like "fall,""garden," "sunset," "winter." Or free-associate with adjectives like "nautical," "peaceful," "modern," "preppy" or even "trendy." We promise, you'll be hooked.Sherwin-Williams Color Generator
Hit their site, and choose "FIND COLOR." Click on any color that draws you, and you'll automatically pull up two accent colors that complement it. Cool.Big Huge Labs Palette Generator
Have a photo on your hard drive that seems to capture your wedding's heart and soul? Upload it to a palette generator, which will kick out most of the main hues involved. Unless you're on the beach, use one of the more neutral, calming colors as a primary (e.g., use it for bridesmaids or table linens), and the more nervous, high-energy colors as accents (use these in table napkins, chair sashes, ribbons, and some of your flowers.)Make a Mood Board
Once you've narrowed down some favorites, start grabbing photos (for your own personal use, of course). Make a special folder on your hard drive, and save photos that seem to fit the colors, setting and season you're going for. If you've got any photo editing software, start putting them together in one big image. This will tell you more than thousands of words how your look will play out.Making the Most of Your Choices
Now that you've got your colors, how can you really make them shine? A problem that plagues some brides is an oversized fear of chaos. Although it's simple, most weddings aren't at their best when the groomsmen's vests and ties exactly match the bridesmaids' gowns, which in turn match the bride's sash. So, choose your colors wisely and stick with them, but strive for designing more than matching. Brown and ivory are neutrals when chosen thoughtfully, so use their many shades for a sophisticated, monochromatic look. If the bridesmaids wear mocha or persimmon, the men will look great in chocolate brown. And even if the flowers call for a palette of orange and yellow, let a little green or cream sneak in for dimension. Check for too much of a good thing: when the entire wedding party wears matching brown or black, the effect can be overpowering.
And They Lived Happily Ever After ...
When all's said and done, you're sure to have a great feeling about your colors, and how they fit your personal style. Even if the scheme you hit on isn't "I've loved that all my life!", it might be "I never would have thought of that, but I love these together!"Picking your colors is a journey, just like finding the dress, or knocking all those planning items off your checklist. But hitting on the right colors, theme and setting for the ultimate expression of your own Romantic style? That can be the pleasure of a lifetime.

Hi there~ I found your site while trying to find wedding color inspiration online! We’re getting married June 12, 2011 in Houston at http://paradorhouston.com/facilities.html I have to confess, I’m a serial mind-changer…so I’ve been choosing and changing a lot already! The place has a Mediterranean theme, so I was thinking bright blue (royal-ish) with purple (maybe lavender/violet)…then I thought about navy (or again, purple) with lime green. Can you please help? I can’t meet with florists until I decide what the colors are! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! thank you :)
Aimee,
Wow! beautiful location! I think I have something that will work beautifully. It is a mediterranean style. using deep reds, fuschia, and and green ( in the grapes). Which I think would compliment the venue so well.

When I saw your venue, I just knew these colors with the bougainvillea and greenery would look amazing!!

Hi girls! So I am planning a fall themed wedding next October in Lake Placid, NY and I was thinking of using Merlot or a Ruby color as my bridesmaid dresses and going with a burnt orange flower. I was wondering what other colors would go with that? Are colors going to look nice together? Also, what are some nice fall decorations to use at the reception. Thank you

Im getting married Sept. 24, 2011 in Lake George NY. I want to go with a fall Leaf theme. having trouble with the color scheme tho. I thought of a burnt orange but how do I incorporate that into everything. I also thought of Navy and orange, maybe having the girls wearing navy dresses with orange flowers. Not sure what to do , can you help with a little inspiration?
Thanks
Kristina
Kristina,

A hydrangea wedding would be gorgeous! having blue and purple hydrangeas everywhere and you carry white while the bm’s carry a solid color or a mixture of blue/purple.
Breanna,
I meant to ask you what the setting will look like during your wedding date? Also what colors do you lean to the most? You will want colors to compliment the surroundings.
Hi Stacey! I need help choosing the colors for my wedding next year and you have great advice so I thought i’d ask! =) My fiance wants a royal blue wedding and I am girly so I am worried about my wedding being too blue. What other colors can I incorporate to soften the blue? I love the colors black and white, but is there something else I can throw in to give a girly touch? Thank you for your help! I plan for the reception to be indoors (if that helps) =)
Juliane,
What about pink?

I need help. I have a specific theme in mind for my wedding, I want a sort of botanical garden wedding in late spring. But my only problem is that I want only three specific kinds of flowers (because they are in my bouquet). Stargazer lilies, Calla lilies and Roses. I have the flowers, and the style of the wedding. but I still haven’t found what colors I want. I visited the garden and most of the colors there are rainbowy, all the colors of the rainbow are there. But I’m afraid that having a rainbow color wedding will be too difficult
Sessily,
Your right it can be quite difficult plus you will want a color that makes the wedding stand out from a garden setting yet compliment it. Could I get a link or pic to the venue? Plus which colors do you lean toward? It will help pick a color. Usually a red or a pink would be a great color.
Here is a celtic wedding for anyone planning a unique theme.
Hi!
I was planning to do my wedding in June but ended up changing it to August 2011, I chose to a canary, black and off white theme but mostly canary color. Do you think I can still get away with the canary yellow color for my wedding even if its in August?
Thanks,
Claudia
Claudia F,
Absolutely! it will be perfect! Here is a board I just finished last night with those colors.

Thank you but my bridesmaids are going to be wearing a canary color with a black ribbon around their waist (possibly). And my cake I chose a design and it has swirls like the one above but im keeping it white and the roses yellow. I’m stuck on what color the girls bouquet should be cuz i dont want it to wash out the dresses.
hi my name is bri and my wedding is on 10-22-11… the reason for this email is much like the rest of the girls, im in need of guidance for what colors to use the day of my wedding. one of the colors that i am sure of is olive green, and i dont know what other colors to add, i would like something like orange red and yellow also since it is a fall wedding (and not pink!) but how would i incorporate that to my bridesmaid dresses or groomsmen? i have a picture of the color that i want not the dresses..
Bri,
* take a look at this absolutely breathtaking wedding
I would just incorporate the fall colored florals agaisnt the green dresses and have the guys in black or even brown with olive vests and ties. Or you could just do a classic suit or tux.
hello again… in regards to the colors that i had mentioned previously and the link that you sent me, i really liked them but i have a new question… im trying to use those colors but at the same time im trying to make my wedding really traditional and include part of my mexican heritage, so my question is if you have any ideas for me to be able to include like mexican arrangments or something?
Just a quick post about colour and photography. Make sure to discuss your choice of dress colour with your wedding photographer at some stage. This will give her a heads up to the exposures, background colours etc to make the dress look stunning in your pictures.
hi stacy, i’m getting married next year, n would love to have a garden wedding, still deciding, but i’m so glad i found your site, colours is a big issue for me. love the links you’ll be hearing from me. thanks :
Hi Stacey!
Im needing some help with my colors, were getting married in either sept. or oct. I want a kid of picnic feel with bandanas and hay bales with mason jars and wildflowers. I HATE fall colors!I was thinking yellow with purple green orange and red (like all the colors of bandanas) The venue is outside no buildings around but a delapated barn. Can I use these colors? I’ll attach some pics of what Im going for.
And some more…

Stacey,
Great ideas! What kind of wildflowers should i use that time of year? Here of some pictures of what I like. Thank u!
Kirsten,
It will depend on your location and if you go local. I would get in contact with a florist or even a nursery to find out what is available. Alot of brides ging “green” pick their own bouquets and florals from local growers. I love what you have put together. I think sticking with romantic floral colors like the last post ( first pic) would be beautiful and make the vibrant collors come to life. Black eyed susans, gerbera daisies could be added, sunflowers, aster, etc. But again please check your local area. IT will differ.

hi,it’s been a long time i wrote.please my wedding is coming up on the 27th of november.i love turqoise blue and i need two other colours to add to it.please help me.
Nonny,
It depends on the style your after. Black and white or brown and white go perfect with turquoise. It keeps it classic and easy top plan/decorate. keeping all white florals then pulling in some damask print and/or crystals. Could I get a look at your venue? It is a great place to look for complimentary colors. Also another color that would work is blush and apricot mixed with orange.
Hello Stacey,
My sister is getting married in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands and is having a hard time picking colors. Her ceremony is on the beach and a reception at a restaurant to follow. Two of the younger bridesmaids (10 and 15 yrs old) want purple and the other two (in their mid twenties) are flexible. The bride wasn’t sure on keeping the colors lighter or going with a pewter and deep purple. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Maid of Honor Trying to help her bride!
Kathy,
Could I get a pic or link to the venue? Also what time will the wedding take place? thanks!!
Her wedding website is http://janetandgreg.ourwedding.com/ You should be able to find most of the information you need. The ceremony will be around 5pm but I’m not sure everything is set in stone. Thanks for your help!!!
Kathy,
I didn’t see where the reception was held, the details were under construction. Purple can fade into the background. Still this is a stunning combo! Another ideal combo is a simple pewter and white. GORGEOUS!!
Kathy,
Just check out the visions in white section (silver and white) page 3.
Sorry about that, the ceremony is at Lindquist Bay and the reception is at Havana Blue (both in St. Thomas, USVI). I appreciate all the help!
Kathy,
I would look at the girls skintones and hair coloring. Purple is kinda difficult for older bm’s to carry off. I do love the ideal of pewter and white. I think with the setting it is perfect. Lighter colors seem to go well in the venue.
* look at this ( see how the blue dresses look black except for the bodice band). If using purple think lavender and pewter. Again be careful with the older bm. They may look best in a deeper shade.

Hello,
Our wedidng date will be September 3rd, 2011 and I’m leaning towards a rustic, modern, chic feel for our reception. It will be an intimate close friends and family-only affair. I am having trouble deciding what our center pieces should look like. I really love succelents, anything that pops but is yet simple, small (low), and budget friendly. Our colors are gray, yellow, and white. Here’s the link of our venue (The Avalon Room). Thank you in advance for all your help. Sincerely, Michelle

Vernessa,
Do you have a pic or link to your venue?
im having my wedding on august 13th and had originally wanted my colors to be pink, yellow, bluish purple, and green? would these colors work out ok for that time of a wedding i was gona b having a july wedding but had to change it and kinda of wanna keep the same colors as the flowers are already made up. Shelly,
Yes it will work if it compliments your venue. What is your venue colors? Do you have a pic or link?
HI ITS ME AGAIN. I ASKED FOR A LITTLE INSPIRATION A FEW MONTHS AGO FOR MY SEPT 2011 WEDDING….WELL IM BACK! I HAVE MANAGED TO FIND A FEW DRESSES FOR MY MAID OF HONOR IN PEACH AND A FEW IN CORAL. MY ORIGINAL WEDDING COLORS ARE PERSIMMON AND CREAM WITH GOLD ACCENTS. I WOULD LIKE THE LADIES TO WEAR PERSIMMON AND THE GUYS IN CREAM SUITS. THE GOLD WOULD COME INTO PLAY AS THE RIBBON ON THE BOUQUET. MY QUESTION IS..WILL A CORAL OR PEACH DRESS GO WELL WITH THE PERSIMMON? THE DRESSES WE ARE IN LOVE WITH DONT COME IN PERSIMMON. I ALSO FOUND A BEAUTIFUL WEDDING DRESS BUT THE PROBLEM IS THAT ITS IVORY/SILVER AND THAT WILL NOT GO WELL WITH GOLD. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE AND PLEASE INCLUDE SOME INSPIRATION BOARDS. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!!
Mo,
HI! First can I get a look at the dresses you are looking at? Do you have a website that carries them? Persimmon and coral do go well together.
* alfred angelo has them but it is called Spice
* davids bridal has them too.
Im getting married next year 9-10-11 i want my colors to be grey and fuschia the guys in grey and the girls in fuschia my question is what color should i have my maid of honor wearing and do i need to add one more color if so what color? Could someone please help me with your thoughts.
Renae,
*I would do just the fuschia and grey.
You could have her in a fuschiadress with a grey sash, or have her in the same dress with a different looking bouquet. You could even pair her in grey and have a fuschia bouquet. You dont have to put her in a different color just add subtle difference, if you like.
Stacy,
Here’s a pic of my venue
Thank you for your reply. How should i do the groomsmen and the groom? I was thinking of the grey suits for the groomsmen with the fuschia vest and tie what do you think? im not sure, and for my FH what about white i not to good with this stuff could i please have your input on this.
Also for my venue i wanted to do maybe gray or silver linens with a fuschia runner what do you think?
Thank you so much lost bride.
Renae,
I think the grey with fuschia would look nice. Or you could do a grey with a silver vest and tie which also looks sharp. I think the venue woul dcome alive with the colors you have chosen. Have the guys try on th ecolors to see which looks best. Your fh can be in white but what about having him in grey or black with silver or white. The runner will also look good due to the carpet coloring. I would also think about adding fuschia pinlights.
Hi, I am just starting to plan my wedding for next September (date not chosen yet) in Martha’s Vineyard. I am having trouble deciding on my wedding colors/theme. I know it’s going into fall, but I’m not a fan of fall colors. Can I still use summer-like colors then? I can’t decide between a classic, elegant wedding style with white/champagne/gold like colors or a garden style bright color wedding with a white “base” and accents of dark pink and green or navy. Is there any way to combine these ideas and can I use them in September? I would describe my style as more clean, classic and romantic.
Kate,
Oh yes. You can have all those ideas combined. Do you have a pic of your venue and location? I wanted to see what colors and elements are there. If you are looking for a clean romantic look, then white is the way to go. it has a crisper feel to it in weddings. Especially when paired with black, or navy, etc. And you cant go wrong with sage with champagne, golds, white. Keeping it clean means keeping the colro palette on the simpler side.
Thanks for the advice Stacey! Below is a link to the venue we are most likely going to be. We are working on the final details to decide whether or not to book it. We are leaning towards 9/3/11 as our date rather than 9/24 (the other option) because it might be getting cold on the vineyard by then.. I am thinking white and navy with accents of dark fuschia for my colors.

Kate,

Hi, i am getting married labor day weekend 2011 on the beach. I am having a very hard time trying to pick colors. My fiance wants cornflower (David’s Bridal) and green. I was thinking maybe an olive green and adding a soft pink as an accent color. I don’t know how this will look at all and if it will work on the beach. Can you please find some pictures or share some ideas with these colors? I have zero ideas and do not know where to start. What colors could I use for BM’s dresses and GM’s tux? Please help…
LaShonda,
I love the blue and green. On some color charts cornflower is a similar color to periwinkle. Just deeper shade.
* look at this board
* here is a different shade with moss green
La Shonda,
Here is a board I made previously. The dress is a blue so it might help see how pink and green can look.
* here
Stacy,
I must admit, I didn’t like the colors blue and green together, but seeing this board that you put together changed my mind! I absolutely love it! You are awesome! Thank you so much for your help.
Hi Stacy
It’s LaShonda again. One more question. How can we combine wedding themes? He likes blue/green for a beachy/tropical feel and like pink/green for a garden/romantic feel.
Thanks
LaShonda,
What color combo were you looking at for sure? still the blue pink and green.
LaShonda,
That is what gives its lush just picked look.
The way to make it a more romantic garden style setting is in the flowers you choose. The key to making it like that greenery, greenery, greenery.
* also this look with loads of roses

Hi,
. Well I am trying to plan a wedding and I have an idea of what I want the colors (Cobalt Blue and Pure White and some Silver) I don’t know what season those colors are good to work with a December Wedding or September Wedding or a April wedding we haven’t decide on the date yet. Do you think those colors are transitional for either Sept. or Dec. or Apr. please help me
I’m sure you don’t get too many guys planning out the wedding but here I am
Hi,
I needed some help with deciding on some colours. I am trying to find grey/basicaly silver suits for the guys, my dress is an oyster colour and I am looking for a vibrant colour purple for my bridesmaid dresses. I think I will have trouble finding these. Do you have any other suggestions? The ceremony is in gardens, followed by a reception at the yacht club (where they have black lounges, chairs, etc) Flowers I am thinking about I have attatched a picture.
Thanks
Tanya,
* look at some of these colors to see if there is a purple you like
The purple and silver/grey will be very beautiful against the black chairs. Which leads me to another suggestion. It would look super sharp with the girls in black against the grey/silver suits and purple flowers. Could even ahave a silver sash on the dresses. Another place to try is AlfredAngelo.com

Tanya,
I remembered this wedding and fromwhat you are describing this would be perfect.
* look here at this wedding
Ihave used this wedding as an example a few times. it never ceases to astound me. The simple decor/style has major impact. I am thinking your wedding style sounds like it would go hand in hand with this.
If the link doesn’t show then google search Michelle and Tennyson the knot. It will bring up the links. You may have to sign into the knot or sign up free. But it is a GORGEOUS wedding. I could see this in a yacht club easily.
Hi Ms. Stacey!
I’ve been reading all the comments & ur suggestions but I’m still confused :-) lots of beautiful colors.
Getting married January 23,2011 in a tropical place..old but elegant church wedding, garden–sunset reception starts at 6pm. we are thinking chocolate brown, champagne & I’m not sure what would be the added color to make it chic, elegant, simple but not boring.
Im having a light colored dress.I’m not sure if champagne will be good for the bridesmaid dress because they don’t have fair complexion
maybe like morena-asian color & my flowr girls too.you think my bridesmaid & flwr girl should have darker color because Im wearing light? The guys are going to wear white top & black pants.
Really need your help as soon as possible..thank u very much
Ann,
Hi! Champagne looks great on medium to darker skintones( with yellow undertones).
* check out this
* look at these tips for skintones
My apologies I just saw what the guys were wearing. You said chic simple and elegant. too many shades like whites and champagnes mixed with brown and black will make the wedding not flow together well. If you had the guys in white and taupe or brown that would work very well. then add one pop of color like fuschia or a shade from the sunset colors. Like peach or another shade of pink. You could also stick with the black and have the girls in black or blush pink and add an array of florals from creamywhite to touches of blush.
* I have loads of boards I have done youmight find some ideas
* here is one that I did
Ann,
Here are some that I picked. A white wedding would look amazing in a tropical paradise at sunset. Let me know if you find something you like.

Jeremy,

me AGAIN!! i have a question about the time for the wedding. The date is October 16 2010. I have researched and the sun will set at 6:56. I will have lights strung up at the reception. what time do you think the wedding should start? it will be a short ceremony. 5? 5:30? 6??? Thanks!
Jamie,If you are wanting the ceremony to hit right when the sun is going down, then that would depend on how long the processional/recessional will take. Walk it thru and time it to see how everything goes. it would be hard to say without walking it thru. All you need is a couple friends to help out. Short ceremony can last as brief as 20 minutes but average is 30 minutes. If it last for almost 30 minutes( 6:30) then you would be walking back down the aisle right at sunset. Hope this helps!
