Choosing Your Wedding Colors: A Guide for Designing Brides

There's no question: choosing wedding colors is one of the earliest, trickiest tasks a bride has to cross off the list. You can't even talk your florist until you've worked this out.

And even if you're getting the cake from Ron Ben-Israel, he's not going to ask you whether your wedding theme draws elements from 14th century Venetian court dress ... he'll ask you about your colors.

A mere generation ago, planning the wedding was a lot easier. It expressed your social class, and your parents' tastes. Even if they had particular ideas, the market couldn't offer much in terms of individual design. But these days, your wedding expresses your personal style in a way it never has before. Translation? The pressure's on!

Sussing Out Your Style

Some brides can solve the color question without thinking too much about style. They might have a life-long love for purple. Or, their venue might have strong hues they need to coordinate with. Or, when they picture their wedding, they already see their bridesmaids awash in certain colors. Easiest of all: sometimes they already have a theme in mind.

For others, it's not that simple. Still, you can quickly pin down the styles that get your heart beating almost as fast as your fiancé does. Does Martha Stewart's relaxed, preppy look command your undying devotion? Do you pray you can someday actually subscribe to H&M magazine? Did Vera Wang's modern, moody Bolshevik collection for fall 2007 incite heavy breathing? This gives you some major clues.

Home Decor

Destination: Home, Sweet Home

Still, even if you don't consider yourself a fashionista or a Martha devotee, all's not lost. Instead, let's turn our eyes back to home and hearth.

Many brides aren't just looking forward to a wedding, they're also buzzing with anticipation over the dream house they plan to share with their beloved. And in the process of hunting down this love nest, most spent lots time mulling over their personal style. What did you picture in your mind's eye as the right setting for your new life together? A rangy colonial with a gabled roof? A warm, log-sided farmhouse with a wood stove in the kitchen? Or did you dream of finding a downtown loft bursting with recessed lighting and monochromatics, and flip through the new IKEA catalog to pick out your cabinets?

Or consider: do you dream of filling your home with antiques you can pass down to your children? Look to seasonal-inspired color schemes and ballrooms. Plan to drape your bedroom ceiling in yards of mosquito netting? A fairytale wedding drenched in candelabras, gold braid and gauzy swags might fit the bill. Collect exotic objects from all over the planet? Try an art museum for your setting, and a sophisticated or daring palette.

And if you're one of those eclectic types who pairs Amish rocking chairs with aboriginal artifacts, use this old designer trick: think of the last bit of art or furniture you bought to spruce up your house. That tells you what's on your mind lately.

Pink & Champagne Wedding

Your Secret Romantic Style

So, you know your domestic style is Eclectic Contemporary. Congratulations: that means you're holding a black-and-white wedding with chartreuse accents and ostrich feathers in a huge SoHo loft, right?

Hold it: not so fast. Why? Because many brides have a special romantic style that exists in a universe by itself. You might be thrilled picking out Art Deco style spaceships for your pendant lighting. And yet, when it comes your wedding, you might picture something a lot more traditional.

So even if you're the most fashion-forward girl on the block, take a moment to consider whether your wedding vision doesn't actually go back in time by few hundred years. You might secretly harbor a special place in your heart for New England autumns, Victorian elegance, English cottage style, or even timeless fairy tales. And if that's true, rest assured you've got plenty of company.

The Gown's the Guide

But how do you tell if this stylistic gotcha's operating in your case? Here's the secret: go get your dress.

For many brides, The Dress is a journey that starts with many preconceptions, but ends in the unexpected. Finding the dress is usually a case of recognizing it once you've tried it on, not knowing ahead of time what you'll wear.

And once you've found it, the dress will offer some big clues about your Romantic style. Captured by a demure ivory gown covered in Alençon lace, with a button-back closure? Start your search with pastels and neutrals that suit a 1930's vintage or feminine garden wedding. Fell hard for a sleek, diamond white v-neck that's all about the lines? Investigate the crisper, more playful palettes we see today, such as black and white, aqua, bright pinks, lime green and corals.

Seasonal

Adjust for Geography, Venue and Season

Now that you've unearthed your personal style, it's time to look outward. If your style's traditional, for example, start with a hotel ballroom. If you want a strong seasonal feel for fall, try a rustic barn. Cultivated gardens go well with traditional, Martha-esque tints. Tents weddings are a blank slate: you can make them as classic or brazenly modern as your heart desires.

Geography, too, plays a role in your colors. Tropical affairs in the blinding sun are often showcases for the brightest hues of all: coral and orchid, for example, or aqua and orange. Evening white-tie affairs in New York City? Not so much.

Many brides are in the middle, and want to weave in at least a seasonal hint. Fortunately for them, most seasons have palettes both traditional and modern. For example, a classic summer wedding might feature cornflower blue or sage, where a modern one draws on fuchsia and lime green, or orange, pink and black.

Even flowers help set the style. For example, a profusion of pinks in a bouquet of roses and peonies says English cottage. Mini-sunflowers and chrysanthemums says New England country. On the other hand, the color blocking in a hand-tied bouquet of purple callas is strongly modern.

Essential Color-Choosing Tools

Now you've got a style in mind, let's get to the art of actually picking colors. Here are a few can't-miss tools:

Color Schemer. You'll need to create a free account, but this wonderful site has user-created palettes aplenty that you can search by keyword. Once you've registered, hit the "search schemes" button and enter words that fit your vision, like "fall,""garden," "sunset," "winter." Or free-associate with adjectives like "nautical," "peaceful," "modern," "preppy" or even "trendy." We promise, you'll be hooked.

Sherwin-Williams Color Generator. Hit their site, and choose "FIND COLOR." Click on any color that draws you, and you'll automatically pull up two accent colors that complement it. Cool.

Big Huge Labs Palette Generator. Have a photo on your hard drive that seems to capture your wedding's heart and soul? Upload it to a palette generator, which will kick out most of the main hues involved. Unless you're on the beach, use one of the more neutral, calming colors as a primary (e.g., use it for bridesmaids or table linens), and the more nervous, high-energy colors as accents (use these in table napkins, chair sashes, ribbons, and some of your flowers.)

Make a Mood Board. Once you've narrowed down some favorites, start grabbing photos (for your own personal use, of course). Make a special folder on your hard drive, and save photos that seem to fit the colors, setting and season you're going for. If you've got any photo editing software, start putting them together in one big image. This will tell you more than thousands of words how your look will play out.

Purple Green

Making the Most of Your Choices

Now that you've got your colors, how can you really make them shine? A problem that plagues some brides is an oversized fear of chaos. Although it's simple, most weddings aren't at their best when the groomsmen's vests and ties exactly match the bridesmaids' gowns, which in turn match the bride's sash.

So, choose your colors wisely and stick with them, but strive for designing more than matching. Brown and ivory are neutrals when chosen thoughtfully, so use their many shades for a sophisticated, monochromatic look. If the bridesmaids wear mocha or persimmon, the men will look great in chocolate brown. And even if the flowers call for a palette of orange and yellow, let a little green or cream sneak in for dimension. Check for too much of a good thing: when the entire wedding party wears matching brown or black, the effect can be overpowering.

And They Lived Happily Ever After ...

When all's said and done, you're sure to have a great feeling about your colors, and how they fit your personal style. Even if the scheme you hit on isn't "I've loved that all my life!", it might be "I never would have thought of that, but I love these together!"

Picking your colors is a journey, just like finding the dress, or knocking all those planning items off your checklist. But hitting on the right colors, theme and setting for the ultimate expression of your own Romantic style? That can be the pleasure of a lifetime.

gwynette,
i love the lavender!!it is so easy for a winter wedding!! i am torn though, claret with gold and green is beautiful!! it actually depends on the look you are after. usually your first instinct is what you lean to more, are you wanting traditonal holidayish colors or want to try something a little different. you know, red and lavender would make an eyepopping combo. instead change the gold to more of a champagne gold, lavender, deep red, and use green ( in the greenery only).

bianca,
would love too!! can you give me an idea, if you want a fall theme or would like to go in a different direction. if so, do you have any fave colors? your fh? this will help me see what type of setting your after. also what about the venue colors? that way i wont search for pics or ideas that will clash. so many beautiful colors go well with ivory and/or champagne. one is burnt orange and chocolate. or you could do a mix of fall colors, no more than 3. when you walk in a flower shop are there any colors that stand out to you? for the bm any neutral or color that will compliment the skintones as well as the setting itself. neutrals are great about “blending” with almost anything. looking forward to talking to ya soon! :D

Hello Stacey,

I also need help on my wedding colors! I’m going to have a summer wedding in 2010 at the very beautiful Villa del sol d’oro in California. Here is the link to the site:
http://www.alverno-hs.org/about_villa.asp
The villa is a charming place thats vintage with lots of green and tan.
If I had to describe what I want for my wedding it would be feminine, slightly vintage, romantic and elegant.
With that in mind, my colors are all over the place. I think of blush, mauve, cream with silver or gold accents. Or muted pinks and peaches. I also like fuschia, yellow and teal. Or do I go opposite and choose bright summery colors like pink, orange and yellow?
As you can see I am completely crazy  What do you think? Can you suggest any other colors that might work? Help!! Thanks in advance!

ann,
that is absolutely stunning!! personally i would keep it simple and stay in the pink family. the pic i posted and i just knew that it was the color!! i would put the girls and guys in a neutral like brown or black. add lots of flowing greenery. if you want you could keep your palette monochromatic and use shades from light to deep pink. but i would suggest the single color, i think this color with brown would be stunning! if you wnat to bring in vintage then have silver or wrought iron candelabras( since there is so much beige i would use a antique silver accent) with greenery and fuschia flowers. think garden roses with the ivy trailing onto the table. simple ivory linens with white plates and silverware. for programs have a old world font printed program ( use parchment paper) for flowergirl have a hair wreath of simple ivy have her throw cream and fuschia rose petals, have your ceremony with lots of greenery and candles and standing candelabras with or without hurricane globes, ivy and simple floor length ribbon streamers. bring the fuschia into your arch or alter and the bridal party. i chose this color because it just fits this style of venue. think spanish also. in one aspect it has both italian and spanish features. the 2 can be closely linked in decor.

Thanks for replying back so fast! I’m liking the pink idea (my favorite color!) I also like having silver accents. I’m thinking of using antique silver vases or goblets to hold my reception flowers. Brown is great for adding more depth into the color scheme. Although for the bridesmaids dresses do you think brown might be too dark for pictures? I was thinking of having sage green or maybe even emerald green for the bridesmaids. Maybe it will blend in too much with the greenery?

i am loving the emerald green but take the bm to the shop to try on the shades to see which green flatters their skintone. for example, i want to show how beutiful green is with other greens. it is one of the most stunning colors to put outdoors even. here:

Hello Stacy,
I am getting married in Jan 2010 and am having major color issues. First of all, I have to tell you that my ideal wedding would be in the summer and outside, but that wasn’t an option for us. So we have settled for inside a hotel ballroom. The ballroom is beautiful, but not really my style. It is very burgundy and gold- the large draping curtains are burgundy with small gold stars, the carpet is burgundy with gold swirls, and the chairs are more red and gold. The walls are off-white. Here is the problem- I HATE gold, and burgundy doesn’t necessarily excite me either, but I LOVE a cranberry to dark red! I wondering what colors I can get away with in this space. I am looking for something elegant and romantic. I would prefer not to do the traditional red/black/white scheme as by best friend already did that recently. I was thinking, although others tell me this is awful, of a medium red with a dark plum color or multiple shades of red. Can you help? The pictures are of the ballroom and the hotel lobby.

rebecca,
okay go withme on this one. ;) you said you wanted outdoors. would you consider a wintry theme for your wedding? i am thinking candelabras dripping in cranberry roses, with rhinestones/crystals incorporated into the decor. lots of candlelight. i personally think cranberry and chamapgne with white. green will be automatic as foliage accents, such as evergreens. i think it would be stunning in this room. can you imagine settin gall this on champagne gold ( or light gold linens) have your bouquet with a rhinestone wrap with pale icy blue and clear rhinestones or just clear would do, go ahead and have bm in champagne, there will be enough contrast that they will stand out, especially with ruby like necklace and earrings. you could stand out with jewelry in a pale ice blue( for something blue). now on the centerpieces you could have 1 of 2 things draping rhinestone garlands or glistening wintry branches( which i prefer) with the roses.
*example wedding

( isnt this just gorgeous!! could youimagine small containers of cranberry roses in between these majestic icy branches!, set on a champagne gold linen?) WOW!! let me know if you like this. if not we will look more!!
THIS is a fab website!! i just know you will find ideas here…

Thank you for your response! I wish I could say that I was completely on board, but I’m not loving it. What I do like was the idea of rhinestone/crystal accents and the candelabras with roses. What I am having a difficult time with is the gold still. A champagne color doesn’t seem too bad, but only if you think I can accent with silver because the thought of having gold or brass candelabras, vases, unity candle holders, etc. makes me cringe! The wedding is at night, so I was under the impression that darker colors would be better- what do you think?

Thanks again.

no problem!! at least we can narrow down what you do like. i thought i would start with that and see. my bad, i mentioned gold and you said your didnt like that!! :faint: :D chamapgne would be fantastic paired with silver, i love silver myself over gold so i can completely relate!! actually lighter colors are best at night. i have a pic that i previously posted and i want you to look at, just to see if you might love it, thinking this might be what your looking for? its silver red and white super romantic, light enough for a night time wedding. if you are wanting to go dark you can. think red on red, that is a fantastic look, with loads of silver accents, dripping crystals, etc. then have the bm in champagne. let me know. i am gonna help you any way i can!! :peaceout:

Stacey-

This is awesome!!! I love the tablescape with the champagne linens- so elegant! Thank you so much! Do you think that the red can be multiple shades? I really want my bridesmaids to be in red dresses- I already have them picked. What should I do for them for flowers? Maybe, red and champagne? Or a mixture of red, dark red and champagne? Also, do you think all this will look ok with my white dress? Thank you so much again- my stress level is steadily decreasing. :D

rebecca,
yes the red in multiple shades will work!! i think the varying shades of red would work beautifully; yes it will definitely work with your dress. i think you carrying the red bouquet with champagne ribbons would tie it all in. also you can get a champagne sash and brooch for your dress, if you want to add subtle color there. its okay if you choose not to though. i am so glad you loved the pic!! :D

jade,
both are great color schemes. if you go with orange and peach just remember, if you pair the guys in black it may look abit octoberish. if i used that i would pair the colors with grey or brown. lime and fuschia pink are the rage right now! your color scheme will depend on the look your after and your venues. i see your choosing bolder colors. have you thought about pairing peach, apricot, AND fuschia? if you wanted to go really bold you could add pops of lime here and there. if your wanting a classic look, i would choose the orange and peach, more vibrabt fun affair choose lime and fuschia. to look at some pics jsut google image lime and fuschia wedding; lime and fushia wedding board then try using hot pink in the place of fuschia for more results. also type in fuschia wedding board ( for other color combos). then google image peach and orange wedding and peach and orange wedding board. i also went ahead and and checked out orange and fuschia wedding
i have one link here that is gorgeous!!

Hi Stacey, you have a great eye for colors. We are an AA couple, having a destination wedding in October 2010 in the Caribbean. The hotel were we are getting married is located in a bay just steps from the beach. What colors do you recommend that would work in a tropical beach location that would stand out against the backdrop of blue waters, sand, and greenery? Would turquoise, beige and white blend in too much?

Andy, thank you!! i think turquoise, beige and white would be perfect. then i would bring in color in the florals with the bridal bouquet in turquoise, green and white. as in the board i made, keep the reception tables in that color scheme too. i wanted to put all the color in bm bouquet etc.like shown. guys in white and beige. i hope you like the board!!

Stacey, I completely love the board! My fiance thinks since we are having a seaside wedding, turquoise has been done alot and prefers to concentrate on tropical colors like fuschia and orange and I have seen a lovely board with just these two colors. Can you suggest a way to tastefully include a bit of turquoise into this color scheme or do you think it will be over the top? Help!!!

andy,
that is a totally beautiful board. turquoise in small doses would be beautiful!! think about adding turquoise crystals in bottom of centerpieces or food dye/ tint the water . it would look like you scooped up pails of blue ocean water ( or google floralytes; you can get any color just add to your water in the centerpieces and that will make it look blue) to set your flowers in. beautiful. have white favor boxes with both fuschia and turquoise ribbons. then for your bouquet have it tied with a turquoise ribbon, for the something blue. you could even think about subtle aqua or turquoise ( rhinestone) jewelry or touches toyour wedding cake. i do love the water idea though. i would definitely do that!! :love2:

Hi,

I am getting married in the summer, the theme of my wedding is classis and elegant. I like the idea of using gold and cream as my colours but would like to add a third colour in just to break it up a little.

Can anyone advise me on what olours would go best with the above?

ang, gold and cream will compliment just about any color.
*** can you tell me the colors of your venue so i can see which ones will go?
i see you said classy and elegant so i would add a subtle color like green to break it up yet keep it the setting youwant. think about usinga simple sage or spring green. or youcan just pull in lots of greenery into the decor and use candelabras for a super classy feel. i would hands down choose green. i am afraid another color will take away instead of compliment your wedding theme. but is you dont care for green please write back and i will look for another color.

Thanks for the advice Stacey, I now have some sort of directionn

I made a spelling error in my first email - my theme is Classic & Elegant.
I haven’t chosen my venue yet, I might have it at a hotel venue, The Hyatt or at the Greek Club (which I’ll need to drape & decorate myself). Both venues are in South Africa.
I like the idea of using green with gold and cream/ivory, but was also thinking, what about a pale pink or brown to go with these colours. Or perhaps Mocha or Purple? I am so confused!
If it were your summer wedding, which colour would you definitely use to go with the gold and cream? :D

P.S. I don’t know if this helps but my dress is Ivory.

ang,
hi great to hear from you again!! okay i just looked at one of the venues. i am hoping it is one you are considering the hyatt johannesburg? if so, using alot of cream and gold is perfect for this since there is alot of brown ( but okay if you use for bridal party, i tried gold in bm dresses but its beautiful i think it will be to close to ivory in the pics) i think i have the colors ( after studying the room) that you will need. what about doing everything in gold and cream like you said and in the flowers have peach/apricot and and a reddish pink/coral red in the flowers?
i hope you dont laugh!! no its okay  cause it is kinda funny where i got the idea of these flower colors, have you ever seen george of the jungle with brendan frasier? at the end there is a wedding that has this floral color scheme and i think it is just perfect for this setting. it is elegant too. i think you just might love it. i think it would be the most ideal for this, cause of how enhances the beautiful african decor and culture. it would really make it pop. the wedding is outdoors onthe movie so it has alot of greenery and i think that enhances even more. i would keep the gold and cream as my main linens, napkins etc. and pull in the color inthe florals only. perfect for summer! i just checked out the greek club, it is a little lighter in decor and the colors i suggested would go perfect in here too. this is the color i am seeing…..
*head wreath colors on elephant

let me know what ya think, i am hoping my suggestions will give more direction. or at least rule out what you dont want. if you dont like the colors i have suggested then i would go with a elegant pink ( this could still be mixed with shades of coral and peach) or use this color scheme: peach( in the florals) , gold, ivory, brown ( for bridal party attire) . that is a gorgeous scheme!! suitable for both venues!! i made a board with this color scheme, notice i went ahead and used some shades of pinks including a shade of fuschia ( in the calla lilies) i gave 2 tablescapes with each group having the bm dress with its matching bouquet. i think either one of these tablescapes would be perfect! i especially think if you used the wedding branches and added it to either wedding decor it would be perfect. cause it brings in a touch of africas amazing exotics and ties them into a wedding in a captivating way!! i thought all the guys needed to be in tux i suggested in board. i just think it would have a more smooth look instead of guys in 2 different color vests and ties. it is a look that i myself lean to but of course it is the brides taste that matters. i do hope you like this board. let me know!! :D

brooke,
hi!! neat board!!i am thinking since it is outdoors have white linens with eggplant runner then top it off with creamy coral and creamy white flowers, with lots o’ greenery. done this way it will stand out especially agaisnt nature. for your other decor, keep it white with greenery. girls in eggplant carrying two shades of flowers ( eggplant and corals) youcarry all coral bouquet. i thought this would pull your fab colors out more in the outdoors yet look lush and romantic. take a cue from nature withthe greenery yet the eggplant and coral will shine if done this way. it will be breathtaking!

brooke, if you are concerned about it being to loud tehn by all means put them in eggplant. it is a rich absolutely gorgeous color!! i had an idea for the florals since you are using eggplant and a summer wedding. adding faux berries to your centerpieces, like blackberries and/or faux plums, just something eggplant colored. such a summery thing to do!! you cant go wrong either way. coral will give your bm skintone a beautiful glow. if your choosing to doing all eggplant linens then i wouldnt put the girls in eggplant. have them try on both colors and see what suits them better. i am thinking coral will, but eggplant may just surprise. coral will not be to loud as long as you use subtle everywhere else.it is a breathtakingly beautiful color. it will turn out wonderful with the ideas i suggested earlier.

i would have the vests and tie matching the bm dresses and the groom matching you. unless your going for a more classic look then have black and white or black with black vests( i think this looks super great on guys). so the choice is really yours, you cant go wrong with any of these. if it were me i would choose classic. with with brighter colors such as coral, i think it really makes it look seamless.

this is one of my faves:

*Brown and Mint Green Wedding Inspiration Board

let me know what you steer to. i personally love the brown and mint green with creamy flwoers and gold in the metal accents. if you dont want all those colors then, i would go withthe brown , crema and gold. it would be my next fave.

i love this website!!! i have a question, do you think dark purple is too dark of a color for a spring wedding? i already have the flowers ordered and im definitely goin with purple/lavender…im just debating on having dark, like lapis, colored BM dresses or the lavender. i dont want it too look to fallish

hi ashleigh,
it is a matter of choice because both will be gorgeous. i would head to a bridal store and let the girls try on the colors before i made my choice. the lapis may not suit and flatter the skintones where lavender might. i do love lavender it gives a soft ethereal look to any wedding. i think the bm would look fab in that color. look at ashtyn’s post below and you will see a lapis dress with lavender/purple flowers. it is stunning. you cant go wrong with either color. both will suit spring beautifully and not look fallish. i do hope my advice helps!

;) Hi Everyone,
Stacey, Thank you so much for giving me those wondeful ideas. I’m back! I live in Santa Cruz, California and was wondering if anyone knows of print shops where they can make Spanish/English wedding invitations. I am having a hard time finding print shops do Spanish. Some of our relatives understand both Spanish/English, but some of them don’t understand English or vice versa and this is why I wanted to have Spanish invitations as well. :? Any suggestions?

Hello Everyone,

I need help. My wedding is in December 2009 and my colors are hot pink, pewter, and white. I’m trying to decide if white chair covers will go well with a pewter table cloth. I orignially wanted to do chivari chairs, but they are so expensive and not sturdy enough to house my dress. Also, I was wondering if I should do my floating orchid and hydrangea with floating candle idea for the centerpieces or a vase with calla lillies. I’m having such a dilemma . Can someone please help.

stacy,
yes it will look beautiful. i would add pewter sashes around the chairs, these are the only pics i could find.
*wedding linens
i think both flowers would be ideal. this is how to decide. calla lilies are sleek more contemporary as hydrangeas with orchids and candles will look more lush and romantic. the calla lilies will have a ballroom and/or 40ish feel while the hydrangeas will have that same ballroom appeal it will lend a more sophisticated romance. i am all about romance so i would choose the hydrangeas with orchids & candles. if you need xtra help let me know!! :D

hi again stacey,
i have decided again the teal and red, as nice as i find it. i have now decided to go for a more fresh spring look by using the colours of a watermelon i.e. watermelon pink, forest green and light green. however, i am not mad about the orangeyness of what people consider watermelon…is there a nice fresh pink shade that isn’t quite as orange as watermelon perhaps?
also, would silver go with this colour combo?
thanks again for your help!

keena,
google image watermelon pink and green. also some shades of hot pink might work. silver accents are perfect!!
also google image watermelon and green wedding then watermelon and green wedding board then try watermelon and pink wedidng board. i also google imaged watermelon bridesmaid dress and found the most awesome pics!!

*Lynn & David: real wedding

davids bridal has what your looking for!!
*watermelon dresses

another option is to put the girls in a more pale or hot pink with watermelon and green bouquets, the pink shades would compliment and enhance each other. sorry i didnt post sooner, somehow i missed yours!! hope your still checking in! :D

Hi, this is my first time visiting the site and I love what I’ve seen so far. My Fiance’ proposed on New Years day and we Immediately set our wedding date for October 23, 2009! I am very excited! However, he and I just can’t seem to figure out what colors we want :-( Since it will be a fall wedding and outside (we live in Florida, so the trees aren’t always beautiful and colorful) I figured we should use fall colors; Burnt orange, yellow, red, brown, cream etc. I just can’t seem to place anything together that would be great for the both of us. Do you have any suggestions? Oh, the venue is full of GREEN, ie grass and trees.

in the meantime i made ya a board!! hope it helps! this is what i was thinking….
since florida is by the ocean, i thought how beautiful and unique it would be to incorporate a few “tropical” flowers ( fall by the ocean theme) let me know what ya think!!

LaRue, hi!! no problem will help all i can! what does your venues look like? are youwanting all these colors or just narrowing them down? one site will help you so much in looking at how colors are presented especialy when you have a hard time determining colors. flowers? dislike/like?

*wedding colors at TheKnot

also google image black and white wedidng then black and white wedding board
then try:
purple wedding board ( also try other shades of purple in your search lilac, lavender, plum, aubergine)
coral wedding board
palm beach coral wedding then coral wedding also coral wedding bouquet ( these will give more results)
when you see what ya like holla back i would love to help!! ( personally i love the coral) i have an attached pic paired with brown. i wouldnt try this with black it will be to octoberish. coral would go well with bm skintones!! simply stunning!
looking at the colors and boards might help too.

Thanks Stacey for a quick response!
I think Im going to go with the coral, champagne and a medium brown color. What do you think about that for a July wedding? We havent picked a venue yet. And we are going with an outside ceremony. Someone gave an idea about going to the Sherman WIlliams site…and OMG that was a great idea! Can I bring in a beach theme with this…seashells, starfish, sand etc???? what are your thoughts?

Okay so I’m getting married in April 2010. And I can’t come with good spring colors. Are favorite colors are purple and dark blue like a navy blue. But I think those colors are just way to dark. Help its an outdoors wedding at sunset. Either at a lake or at a garden. In phoenix arizona :?

roxann, you couldnt have picked two better colors!! the key is to lighten the purple and set it against the navy. it is stunning when paired together!! since you will probably want the outdoors and sunset; lake or garden to speak volumes and outdoors is not necessary to overdecorate. i would keep the flowers and colors to a minimum. i am thinking purple and blue hydrangeas set against navy blue. oh how beautiful!!
keep it in one flower with lots of hydrangea leaves. it will look so springtime!! to many flowers will compete with the outdoors. now for the linens keep those crisp white and with the purple/blue hydrangeas you could add some pale yellow roses to mix up the shades a bit never underestimate a white table linen with dark blue napkins and centerpeices of purple and blue hydrangea simple yet stunning!!. it will enhance the drama and pull in yellow from the sunset.
*Cassandra & Derek in Grand Lake, OK(it dont have blue AND purple but i thought it was pretty;might give ideas!!)

*Kate & Dan in San Francisco, CA(imagine using navy blue dresses with this, just gorgeous!)
*blue & purple wedding board
*Kathryn & Chad in Nantucket,

My wedding is June 19, 2010. Ive been leaning twards lavender/lilac colors…but really like the color lapis as well. ive been thinking about using a pale yellow or pink for accent colors along with the lighter lavender and maybe silver but im not sure. do you think lapis is too dark for BM dresses in the spring? My fiance is dead set on the tuxes being black, i dont want everything to look too dark in the pictures.

ashtyn,
no it isnt to dark but with pale yellow and pink i am concerned how bright it will be. i pulled out the dress color and paired it with several colors. the pink doesnt really do anything for it. it doesnt flow. however, pulling in lavender and pale yellow now that is a combo!! i am thinking keep your flowers soft and romantic here are some pics.

Thanks for the pictures! I ran into the same thing Ashleigh did with the lapis, some dresses I found looked blue and others looks purple. Must depend on the manufacture. The pictures helped a lot, thanks!

Hi! I am getting married in October this year. The ceremony is outside and the reception is in a big barn. We are not barn, country people, but really like the simplicity of the barn. I have no pics, but the inside is really pretty with white lights strung up everywhere, and it has a loft with more lights. I think I have decided on using Sugar Plum (from Alfred Angelo) and brown, maybe different colors of brown, pink, and cream. But I am out of ideas as far as decorations and flowers. I love lillies and orchids, but I’m not sure what colors to do :meh: I don’t know if I should do different colors or keep the same Sugar Plum and brown throughout the decor. My dress is white and I haven’t decided if I want the girls in the Sugar Plum or brown dresses, and I think I want the guys in brown tuxes. Basically, I’m stuck and don’t know where to go!! Please Help!!! Thanks!!!

I’m attaching a pic of a centerpiece I really like, let me know what you think! We are on a pretty tight budget and need some cheap ideas. Thank you so much!!!

amanda,
hi! i love your colors! i think they will look modern against a barn setting. i put together a lil’ board for ya. one with brown suit and one with black so you could see. i put a rustic twist on it in the food area by using old fashioned beverage containers and a buffet food spread. i tried to find a galvanized tub filled with iced down drinks(to put on board) but to no avail. i thought it turned out very very pretty!! relaxing yet hip! i used as many orchids as i could and calla lilies. can swap out for casablanca lilies if that is waht you meant( i wasn’t sure, smile.) that sugar plum dress color is sooooo gorgeous!! i thought paper lanterns suspended from ceiling would look amazing. my inspiration was the centerpiece pics, i thought they looked like they would suit a loft style venue so that is how i come up with this, i think loft inspiration in a barn is very unique and jaw dropping gorgeous!! hope you agree. i even thought about using mason jars for the orchids but decided against it. i thought it took away from the idea. i just chose the old fashioned rustic elements (like i mentioned) and left the rest alone.

Thanks so much for your quick reply and ideas!! You helped so much!! We figured out the table decor and the flowers! I’m gonna have the girls and guys both in brown, but have a sugar plum sash on the girls dresses and them carrying that color of flowers! Thanks a bunch!! :thankyou:
