Choosing Your Wedding Colors: A Guide for Designing Brides

There's no question: choosing wedding colors is one of the earliest, trickiest tasks a bride has to cross off the list. You can't even talk your florist until you've worked this out.

And even if you're getting the cake from Ron Ben-Israel, he's not going to ask you whether your wedding theme draws elements from 14th century Venetian court dress ... he'll ask you about your colors.

A mere generation ago, planning the wedding was a lot easier. It expressed your social class, and your parents' tastes. Even if they had particular ideas, the market couldn't offer much in terms of individual design. But these days, your wedding expresses your personal style in a way it never has before. Translation? The pressure's on!

Sussing Out Your Style

Some brides can solve the color question without thinking too much about style. They might have a life-long love for purple. Or, their venue might have strong hues they need to coordinate with. Or, when they picture their wedding, they already see their bridesmaids awash in certain colors. Easiest of all: sometimes they already have a theme in mind.

For others, it's not that simple. Still, you can quickly pin down the styles that get your heart beating almost as fast as your fiancé does. Does Martha Stewart's relaxed, preppy look command your undying devotion? Do you pray you can someday actually subscribe to H&M magazine? Did Vera Wang's modern, moody Bolshevik collections incite heavy breathing? This gives you some major clues.

Home Decor

Destination: Home, Sweet Home

Still, even if you don't consider yourself a fashionista or a Martha devotee, all's not lost. Instead, let's turn our eyes back to home and hearth.

Many brides aren't just looking forward to a wedding, they're also buzzing with anticipation over the dream house they plan to share with their beloved. And in the process of hunting down this love nest, most spent lots time mulling over their personal style. What did you picture in your mind's eye as the right setting for your new life together? A rangy colonial with a gabled roof? A warm, log-sided farmhouse with a wood stove in the kitchen? Or did you dream of finding a downtown loft bursting with recessed lighting and monochromatics, and flip through the new IKEA catalog to pick out your cabinets?

Or consider: do you dream of filling your home with antiques you can pass down to your children? Look to seasonal-inspired color schemes and ballrooms. Plan to drape your bedroom ceiling in yards of mosquito netting? A fairytale wedding drenched in candelabras, gold braid and gauzy swags might fit the bill. Collect exotic objects from all over the planet? Try an art museum for your setting, and a sophisticated or daring palette.

And if you're one of those eclectic types who pairs Amish rocking chairs with aboriginal artifacts, use this old designer trick: think of the last bit of art or furniture you bought to spruce up your house. That tells you what's on your mind lately.

Pink & Champagne Wedding

Your Secret Romantic Style

So, you know your domestic style is Eclectic Contemporary. Congratulations: that means you're holding a black-and-white wedding with chartreuse accents and ostrich feathers in a huge SoHo loft, right?

Hold it: not so fast. Why? Because many brides have a special romantic style that exists in a universe by itself. You might be thrilled picking out Art Deco style spaceships for your pendant lighting. And yet, when it comes your wedding, you might picture something a lot more traditional.

So even if you're the most fashion-forward girl on the block, take a moment to consider whether your wedding vision doesn't actually go back in time by few hundred years. You might secretly harbor a special place in your heart for New England autumns, Victorian elegance, English cottage style, or even timeless fairy tales. And if that's true, rest assured you've got plenty of company.

The Gown's the Guide

But how do you tell if this stylistic gotcha's operating in your case? Here's the secret: go get your dress.

For many brides, The Dress is a journey that starts with many preconceptions, but ends in the unexpected. Finding the dress is usually a case of recognizing it once you've tried it on, not knowing ahead of time what you'll wear.

And once you've found it, the dress will offer some big clues about your Romantic style. Captured by a demure ivory gown covered in Alençon lace, with a button-back closure? Start your search with pastels and neutrals that suit a 1930's vintage or feminine garden wedding. Fell hard for a sleek, diamond white v-neck that's all about the lines? Investigate the crisper, more playful palettes we see today, such as black and white, aqua, bright pinks, lime green and corals.Seasonal

Adjust for Geography, Venue and Season

Now that you've unearthed your personal style, it's time to look outward. If your style's traditional, for example, start with a hotel ballroom. If you want a strong seasonal feel for fall, try a rustic barn. Cultivated gardens go well with traditional, Martha-esque tints. Tents weddings are a blank slate: you can make them as classic or brazenly modern as your heart desires.

Geography, too, plays a role in your colors. Tropical affairs in the blinding sun are often showcases for the brightest hues of all: coral and orchid, for example, or aqua and orange. Evening white-tie affairs in New York City? Not so much.

Many brides are in the middle, and want to weave in at least a seasonal hint. Fortunately for them, most seasons have palettes both traditional and modern. For example, a classic summer wedding might feature cornflower blue or sage, where a modern one draws on fuchsia and lime green, or orange, pink and black.

Even flowers help set the style. For example, a profusion of pinks in a bouquet of roses and peonies says English cottage. Mini-sunflowers and chrysanthemums says New England country. On the other hand, the color blocking in a hand-tied bouquet of purple callas is strongly modern.

Essential Color-Choosing Tools

Now you've got a style in mind, let's get to the art of actually picking colors. Here are a few can't-miss tools.

Color Schemer

You'll need to create a free account, but this wonderful site has user-created palettes aplenty that you can search by keyword. Once you've registered, hit the "search schemes" button and enter words that fit your vision, like "fall,""garden," "sunset," "winter." Or free-associate with adjectives like "nautical," "peaceful," "modern," "preppy" or even "trendy." We promise, you'll be hooked.

Sherwin-Williams Color Generator

Hit their site, and choose "FIND COLOR." Click on any color that draws you, and you'll automatically pull up two accent colors that complement it. Cool.

Big Huge Labs Palette Generator

Have a photo on your hard drive that seems to capture your wedding's heart and soul? Upload it to a palette generator, which will kick out most of the main hues involved. Unless you're on the beach, use one of the more neutral, calming colors as a primary (e.g., use it for bridesmaids or table linens), and the more nervous, high-energy colors as accents (use these in table napkins, chair sashes, ribbons, and some of your flowers.)

Make a Mood Board

Once you've narrowed down some favorites, start grabbing photos (for your own personal use, of course). Make a special folder on your hard drive, and save photos that seem to fit the colors, setting and season you're going for. If you've got any photo editing software, start putting them together in one big image. This will tell you more than thousands of words how your look will play out.

Purple Green

Making the Most of Your Choices

Now that you've got your colors, how can you really make them shine? A problem that plagues some brides is an oversized fear of chaos. Although it's simple, most weddings aren't at their best when the groomsmen's vests and ties exactly match the bridesmaids' gowns, which in turn match the bride's sash.

So, choose your colors wisely and stick with them, but strive for designing more than matching. Brown and ivory are neutrals when chosen thoughtfully, so use their many shades for a sophisticated, monochromatic look. If the bridesmaids wear mocha or persimmon, the men will look great in chocolate brown. And even if the flowers call for a palette of orange and yellow, let a little green or cream sneak in for dimension. Check for too much of a good thing: when the entire wedding party wears matching brown or black, the effect can be overpowering.

And They Lived Happily Ever After ...

When all's said and done, you're sure to have a great feeling about your colors, and how they fit your personal style. Even if the scheme you hit on isn't "I've loved that all my life!", it might be "I never would have thought of that, but I love these together!"

Picking your colors is a journey, just like finding the dress, or knocking all those planning items off your checklist. But hitting on the right colors, theme and setting for the ultimate expression of your own Romantic style? That can be the pleasure of a lifetime.

  1. Summer

I am having my wedding in August or September, and I can’t seem to decide on a color scheme. I am torn between a dark red and black scheme, or a lavender and dark blue scheme. Also, with both color ideas I can’t seem to think of any diy centerpiece and bouquet ideas! I don’t want real flowers, but I also don’t want them to look fake and chhesy. Help me please!!!

  2. bimbo

im still searching for my colours.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

Bimbo, If you need any help let me know! I would love to look at the venue and see what color scheme would work. Also if you could give me some colors and the general wedding style your after. Thanks!

  3. ranae

im having a matron of honor and a maid of honor do both of them have to wear diffrent dresses? Or is it okay for one to wear a long dress and the other a short dress?

Also is it okay for all centerpieces to be the same?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Ranae,
Yes it is fine to have all the centerpieces the same. I have seen some weddings with the bridal party in long or short dresses, actually it would depend on the formality of the event. If the short dress and long dress are the same formality, then yes it would be great, though its not required they wear a different dress. Davids Bridal has alot of great mix and match dresses just for this!

    Hi Stacey,

Thanks for your mail as i,m very grateful. With the colours to add i was thinking of ivory and beige/coffee and with this how do do you the groom and his train should match their attire.

Also the venue is either going to be in the church or outdoor precisely in a garden hence i would be very happy if i can get pics or any info that will aid me.

    Brides,
I have 2 new boards one is boho/vintage. The other is a theme board based on a cause close to my heart, child abuse prevention with the blue ribbon color brought into the wedding. I am hoping this will inspire brides to pull the cause they stand for into their wedding. It is a beautiful thing to do.

      Andrea,
What does your venue look like and what colors do you lean too?

  8. Jennifer

Hi Ladies! I was wondering if I could get some help on my color scheme. My wedding is the end of June 2011, and I want a natural feeling, laid back, yet pretty wedding. I am (hopefully) going to be wearing a champagne colored dress. My bridesmaids all have very different skin tones from each other, so I would like a color that doesn’t make them look washed out as well. I know I may be asking a bit much, but I would appreciate any advice I can get.

  9. Kerri

    Good Evening,

I was looking for some advice regarding the colours for my summer wedding.
I am getting married in a barn in the English countryside. I wanted the theme to be ‘English country garden’. I originally wanted to have peach bridesmaid dresses but this colour washed out my bridesmaids and myself so I opted for a more vibrant colour of coral (Dessy colour ginger). I have ordered the dresses in this colour and my dress in ivory.
I was wondering what colours would compliment best to fit in with my theme. I am not uch of a colour person so I was hoping to go for white or ivory for most things with some green and maybe soft peach in the flowers.
What do you think? Would the peach clash, would it be better to go with a soft pink? What would look better with coral, white or ivory flowers?
A lot of the decorations I have found are white, would white be too harsh against the coral and clash with my ivory dress?

I have attached links of the venue and a pic of the bridesmaid dress colour.

Your advice would be much appreciated so I can get going on the flowers and details which I’m stuck on at the moment!

    Thanks

  11. Jena

I am getting married July 30th 2011. I am very excited. I want my wedding to be romantic, classy, vibrant and fun. My wedding colors are yellow and orange. I welcome any ideas.

  12. Blanca

I need help with wedding colors. I am getting married July 2011. I want the vibe of my wedding to be elegant, romantic, classy, & rich. I do not have a favorite color so; it has been hard trying to identify colors. I have not selected a venue but I am looking to have the wedding ceremony outside and the reception indoors.

    Thanks!
    Blanca

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Blanca,
I recommend you find a venue before choosing a color scheme because they may not compliment your setting. ;)

  13. CeeCee

i am getting married in May 2012 and i want a classy wedding style. so far im un-sure of colors but for some reason champagne is sticking out to me. what other colors would go good with campagne i was thinking pink and green. would this be an ideal color for a may wedding. i dont want red or purple.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      CeeCee,
It all depends on your venue/setting. You will want colors that compliment. Do you have a link or pic?

  14. Stacey@FavorIdeas

    Brides,
Made a board using your basic decor. For anyone wanting a very low budget elegant decor-green and white or cream is the way to go. Classic and romantic. Brides have been choosing white or cream for years and no wonder because it looks so beautiful, goes with all seasons, and is failproof. For this board I chose a simple table of white plates and fresh clipped greenery-arranged in second hand or borrowed containers. All mismatched crystal vases? PERFECT! white votives, simple ribbon, potted plants for aisle, and a knockout dress. This wedding wouldn’t be complete unless you used an old fashioned white cake with creamy white icing. Tuck greenery under the cake plate and traditional jordan almonds in a mini vase wrap in tulle and secure with ribbon. Borrow what you can and watch the elegance unfold for mere dollars!! This is a true nod to weddings of days gone by. Simple and meaningful.

  15. Kecia

    Hello :)
I am getting married in August, 2011 in an outdoor ceremony at a farm/orchard. We are debating getting Camo tuxedo vests for the groom and groomsmen. I was thinkging of a chocolate or other dark brown for the bridesmaids dresses. I am having a hard time thinking of another color that won’t clash with the camo or look too busy. I also am not sure what flowers would look best. Any suggestions?

    • stephanie

Hi. I’m getting married in August 2011, too!!!! wow, can you belive it?!? Less than 250 days away!!! Anyhow, I’m looking for color schemes, too. I’m getting married on a bluff overlooking Mobile Bay at as close to sunset as I can…so, I’m thinkin greens/browns as well, but maybe sunset colors…If you’re doing it on a farm/orchard, I’d probably suggest a lot of redwine colors splashed with oranges, yellows, and even greens!…that is unless camo is something you’re doing to make it unique!

Well, feel free to contact me @ stephaniecomalander@yahoo.com if you want.

      • Kecia

Thank you very much for your board!! You have given me some very good ideas and I am excited to get started on the planning. We are actually going tomorrow to try on that same camo tuxedo vest so I can see if I like it as much in person. Thank you for your help!! :)

    • Amber

I believe that an olive green would look very nice with the camo. Look at the greens in the camo and go from there. :D

    • Summer

My brother also had a camo wedding. They had camo vests, cumberbuns and ties. My sister in law got a cheap guestbook and pen and hot glued a camo overlay to them.Iinstead of the flower girls tossing petals, they tossed fall leaves. Her centerpieces were homemade wreaths with fall leaves (fake, of course), burnt orange and ivory flowers, and gems hot glued to them with a votive in the middle. Their cake was decorated with an ivory buttercream and had little shots of fall flowers and leaves. The small details and little splashes of camo were beautiful! It didn’t look cheap at all like I thought it would, they had a gorgeous wedding! PS Her garter was also camo (lol), too cute!

  16. Tinu

what colors look good with deep coral for a wedding?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Tinu,
There are loads of colors that work well with coral. Champagne and coral for a more elegant wedding. Fun event use a shade of green or aqua with coral. What does your venue look like and style of wedding are you after?

      • Tinu

my venue is a marquee, being an African, i want something very stylish and elegant

        • Tinu

Now I’m thinking of pale gold and slightly burnt orange!!! being so indecisive!

  17. Tara

    Hi Stacey,
In my culture, we wear a green gown for our ceremonies. I was thinking of wearing an emerald green gown. I’m having some trouble with my decorations because I want to do pink, silver and ivory for the colors but I don’t know how bad its going to look when I walk in with my green gown. I wear the green gown for about an hour and then I switch into a white gown. Do you think I should reconsider my colors?

  18. Missy

    Stacy,

I have always adored the way black and white look together, and I want a black and white wedding, but I don’t know which season it would look best in and I don’t know if my bridesmaids should be wearing black? I am very confused. My wedding isn’t until 2012, but I need a lot of help! What flowers should i do also? I was thinking that white roses would be best, but I am alergic to roses  thank you so much for all of your help!

    -Missy

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Missy,
I wouldn’t use flowers that your allergic too. There are many wonderful choices in white! Are there any other flowers your not allergic too? If so what are they? I have seen carnations packed tightly and used in black and white weddings-they are gorgeous!! So elegant. Black and white is great for any season it is timeless and classic. it suits alot of settings. The main task would be finding your venue- if you haven’t already- and compliment the setting.

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Missy,
Forgot to mention, yes the bridal party in black would be my choice. It is elegant and looks wonderful on most skintones. Plus they can rewear it, nothing beats a little black dress!!

  19. Heather

Hi! I am getting married in June of 2012. I really like coral because it makes my wedding party’s skin look tan. What other colors would go with this? I don’t think I want brown though.

    Thanks!

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Heather,
Oh I love coral. Alot of colors can go with coral. Aqua, purple, yellow, black, Grey is a great color for coral, It depends on your setting/venue. Google image search different color combos you like for example” aqua and coral wedding Do you have a link I could look at?
      * some pics

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas
        • Heather

          Stacey,
I love the coral and aqua together. I actually don’t have a link for my venue, but the colors won’t be a problem. Do you think that I could do mostly coral with just aqua accents for ribbons and centerpieces? Thanks!

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Heather,
Absolutely! I think it would look great!!

  20. rita

  28. michelle

I am having trouble picking out colors for my wedding. It is next may. My dress is lace with a little bit of silver beading around the sweetheart neckline. Would champagne brides dresses, pink, maroon and another light color flower match this? My venue is in a chapel with maroon and gold carpet. Any input on these colors or others are appreciated! I’ve been trying to pick colors for 3months now and haven’t had any luck. Thanks!

  29. ranae

Hello Im getting married 9/10/11 in Wisconsin my colors are fuschia and grey, the girls will be in fuschia and the guys in grey. My question is how should i do my tables i was thinking of grey table cloths with a fuschia runner?

And also what can i do for centerpieces something simple and budget friendly.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Ranae,
One of the best color schemes! The fuschia runner with grey table linens would look very nice. I would do candles-simple floating candles.
      * scroll down to last pic of floating rose petals/candles

      • ranae

What can i do for flowers for my bridesmaid and my bouquet. my girls are wearing fuschia dresses.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Ranae,
I would ask the florist the best options for your budget or the season. Roses are year round and a great flower. I think the girls could carry fuschia bouquets and you could carry a white bouquet with maybe a great fuschia ribbon or bouqut wrap, or even a rhinestone bouquet wrap.

  30. Cassie

I’m having my wedding June 2011 in the evening. The venue is outside under an oak tree in a field and right next to it will be a big red barn(banquet hall) where the reception will be. I was thinking of using a charcoal, deep purple and a light pink as our colors. I wanted the bridesmaids dresses to be charcoal but wasn’t sure if these colors would work well in the summer and also if they would look well outside. What do you think?

:D ;) :P   :? :love2:    more »
