Choosing Your Wedding Colors: A Guide for Designing Brides

There's no question: choosing wedding colors is one of the earliest, trickiest tasks a bride has to cross off the list. You can't even talk your florist until you've worked this out.

And even if you're getting the cake from Ron Ben-Israel, he's not going to ask you whether your wedding theme draws elements from 14th century Venetian court dress ... he'll ask you about your colors.

A mere generation ago, planning the wedding was a lot easier. It expressed your social class, and your parents' tastes. Even if they had particular ideas, the market couldn't offer much in terms of individual design. But these days, your wedding expresses your personal style in a way it never has before. Translation? The pressure's on!

Sussing Out Your Style

Some brides can solve the color question without thinking too much about style. They might have a life-long love for purple. Or, their venue might have strong hues they need to coordinate with. Or, when they picture their wedding, they already see their bridesmaids awash in certain colors. Easiest of all: sometimes they already have a theme in mind.

For others, it's not that simple. Still, you can quickly pin down the styles that get your heart beating almost as fast as your fiancé does. Does Martha Stewart's relaxed, preppy look command your undying devotion? Do you pray you can someday actually subscribe to H&M magazine? Did Vera Wang's modern, moody Bolshevik collection for fall 2007 incite heavy breathing? This gives you some major clues.

Home Decor

Destination: Home, Sweet Home

Still, even if you don't consider yourself a fashionista or a Martha devotee, all's not lost. Instead, let's turn our eyes back to home and hearth.

Many brides aren't just looking forward to a wedding, they're also buzzing with anticipation over the dream house they plan to share with their beloved. And in the process of hunting down this love nest, most spent lots time mulling over their personal style. What did you picture in your mind's eye as the right setting for your new life together? A rangy colonial with a gabled roof? A warm, log-sided farmhouse with a wood stove in the kitchen? Or did you dream of finding a downtown loft bursting with recessed lighting and monochromatics, and flip through the new IKEA catalog to pick out your cabinets?

Or consider: do you dream of filling your home with antiques you can pass down to your children? Look to seasonal-inspired color schemes and ballrooms. Plan to drape your bedroom ceiling in yards of mosquito netting? A fairytale wedding drenched in candelabras, gold braid and gauzy swags might fit the bill. Collect exotic objects from all over the planet? Try an art museum for your setting, and a sophisticated or daring palette.

And if you're one of those eclectic types who pairs Amish rocking chairs with aboriginal artifacts, use this old designer trick: think of the last bit of art or furniture you bought to spruce up your house. That tells you what's on your mind lately.

Pink & Champagne Wedding

Your Secret Romantic Style

So, you know your domestic style is Eclectic Contemporary. Congratulations: that means you're holding a black-and-white wedding with chartreuse accents and ostrich feathers in a huge SoHo loft, right?

Hold it: not so fast. Why? Because many brides have a special romantic style that exists in a universe by itself. You might be thrilled picking out Art Deco style spaceships for your pendant lighting. And yet, when it comes your wedding, you might picture something a lot more traditional.

So even if you're the most fashion-forward girl on the block, take a moment to consider whether your wedding vision doesn't actually go back in time by few hundred years. You might secretly harbor a special place in your heart for New England autumns, Victorian elegance, English cottage style, or even timeless fairy tales. And if that's true, rest assured you've got plenty of company.

The Gown's the Guide

But how do you tell if this stylistic gotcha's operating in your case? Here's the secret: go get your dress.

For many brides, The Dress is a journey that starts with many preconceptions, but ends in the unexpected. Finding the dress is usually a case of recognizing it once you've tried it on, not knowing ahead of time what you'll wear.

And once you've found it, the dress will offer some big clues about your Romantic style. Captured by a demure ivory gown covered in Alençon lace, with a button-back closure? Start your search with pastels and neutrals that suit a 1930's vintage or feminine garden wedding. Fell hard for a sleek, diamond white v-neck that's all about the lines? Investigate the crisper, more playful palettes we see today, such as black and white, aqua, bright pinks, lime green and corals.

Seasonal

Adjust for Geography, Venue and Season

Now that you've unearthed your personal style, it's time to look outward. If your style's traditional, for example, start with a hotel ballroom. If you want a strong seasonal feel for fall, try a rustic barn. Cultivated gardens go well with traditional, Martha-esque tints. Tents weddings are a blank slate: you can make them as classic or brazenly modern as your heart desires.

Geography, too, plays a role in your colors. Tropical affairs in the blinding sun are often showcases for the brightest hues of all: coral and orchid, for example, or aqua and orange. Evening white-tie affairs in New York City? Not so much.

Many brides are in the middle, and want to weave in at least a seasonal hint. Fortunately for them, most seasons have palettes both traditional and modern. For example, a classic summer wedding might feature cornflower blue or sage, where a modern one draws on fuchsia and lime green, or orange, pink and black.

Even flowers help set the style. For example, a profusion of pinks in a bouquet of roses and peonies says English cottage. Mini-sunflowers and chrysanthemums says New England country. On the other hand, the color blocking in a hand-tied bouquet of purple callas is strongly modern.

Essential Color-Choosing Tools

Now you've got a style in mind, let's get to the art of actually picking colors. Here are a few can't-miss tools:

Color Schemer. You'll need to create a free account, but this wonderful site has user-created palettes aplenty that you can search by keyword. Once you've registered, hit the "search schemes" button and enter words that fit your vision, like "fall,""garden," "sunset," "winter." Or free-associate with adjectives like "nautical," "peaceful," "modern," "preppy" or even "trendy." We promise, you'll be hooked.

Sherwin-Williams Color Generator. Hit their site, and choose "FIND COLOR." Click on any color that draws you, and you'll automatically pull up two accent colors that complement it. Cool.

Big Huge Labs Palette Generator. Have a photo on your hard drive that seems to capture your wedding's heart and soul? Upload it to a palette generator, which will kick out most of the main hues involved. Unless you're on the beach, use one of the more neutral, calming colors as a primary (e.g., use it for bridesmaids or table linens), and the more nervous, high-energy colors as accents (use these in table napkins, chair sashes, ribbons, and some of your flowers.)

Make a Mood Board. Once you've narrowed down some favorites, start grabbing photos (for your own personal use, of course). Make a special folder on your hard drive, and save photos that seem to fit the colors, setting and season you're going for. If you've got any photo editing software, start putting them together in one big image. This will tell you more than thousands of words how your look will play out.

Purple Green

Making the Most of Your Choices

Now that you've got your colors, how can you really make them shine? A problem that plagues some brides is an oversized fear of chaos. Although it's simple, most weddings aren't at their best when the groomsmen's vests and ties exactly match the bridesmaids' gowns, which in turn match the bride's sash.

So, choose your colors wisely and stick with them, but strive for designing more than matching. Brown and ivory are neutrals when chosen thoughtfully, so use their many shades for a sophisticated, monochromatic look. If the bridesmaids wear mocha or persimmon, the men will look great in chocolate brown. And even if the flowers call for a palette of orange and yellow, let a little green or cream sneak in for dimension. Check for too much of a good thing: when the entire wedding party wears matching brown or black, the effect can be overpowering.

And They Lived Happily Ever After ...

When all's said and done, you're sure to have a great feeling about your colors, and how they fit your personal style. Even if the scheme you hit on isn't "I've loved that all my life!", it might be "I never would have thought of that, but I love these together!"

Picking your colors is a journey, just like finding the dress, or knocking all those planning items off your checklist. But hitting on the right colors, theme and setting for the ultimate expression of your own Romantic style? That can be the pleasure of a lifetime.

hi- need some help. Our wedding is in May 1 2010 outside at this beautiful bed n breakfast (Circle S Ranch in Lawrence ks). reception will be inside a barn. Bridemaids dresses in marine from davids bridal. Men in black tux top black wrangles and black cowboy hats. I know i want to use pails for centerpieces- So my question is what flowers and do I have to keep the western theme up inside the reception barn.

hi angie,
actually you dont have to keep the western them up but i would recommend having a unifying look. you have a selection of wildflowers to garden flowers. you can mix the two or just go with roses, daisies and greenery. you dont want too formal flowers or arrangements cause it will look out of place.
*real wedding
*barn wedding
here is a wedding at the circle R ranch, this is just so pretty. i would choose this hands down….

angie,
forgot…
even the flower colors are perfect for the marine blue and black attire. i was gonna recommend a simple natural colored flower palette in apricot anyway. so i believe this will really make your wedding decor. have the girls carry all apricot roses with greenery and you carry the mix of flowers. then in the reception have apricot, the red berries, and lots of greenery in the pails. let it loosely drape out of the pails for a natural look. it will look as if you walked the grounds cutting and picking flowers for your wedding.

Hello!
My husband and I went to Las Vegas and eloped May of 2007…we couldn’t afford a nice wedding, but now we can. We are planning to renew or vows by having another wedding that our family and friends can attend.
July 16th 2011, we are planning a 7 o’clock ceremony that’s outside at a Bed & Breakfast that over looks a lake. Now comes the trouble which I’m hoping that you’ll be able to help me with….
My husband is being very persistent about wearing a white tux. I really don’t mind it, but it’s interfering with my color themes that I had in mind. What colors should BM wear when the GM are wearing white? And as for me “the bride” I was thinking of a nice ivory gown, but would we clash?
Any idea’s? :?

can you tell me the colors of your venue or show me a pic? and what type of formality is it? will be intimate and informal or more on the semi formal side? also what color scheme did you pick?
they do make ivory tuxes and i think he would be very happy with that. you can mix ivory and white, it looks real good when done right. another idea is you could wear champagne or a light champagne gold, against the white tux or ivory tux it would look really good! having the bridal party in brown or black and carry in one single flower type in one bold color. this way your wedding would be monochromatic in ranges of whites, creams, and champagnes. browns and pinks would also make this scheme pop with elegance!

Color dilemma,

I like orange/persimmon and espresso but am getting married in April. I have toyed with the idea of champagne and expresso. Is there a way to couple these without being overwhelming. I don’t want it to seem too much like fall. I’m also trying to get ideas for the groomsmen attire.

nita,
go with something like this…
*An Occasion for Champagne

the idea is to add alot of fresh green to the palette. another to do is pick spring flowers such as: roses, daisies, or tulips. i suggest having the bm in espresso, no sash. then tie in bouquets of creamy white, apricot, orange, fresh green( either in flower stems or adding greenery) tie with a beautiful green flowing ribbon, instead of a darker color. for the guys you can have them in nice khaki if its more on the casual side or brown suits or tux with champagne vest for more elegant. i think this tablescape shows a beautiful way to incorporate these colors, see the accents of brown? i would keep that to accents in the reception area and use mainly oranges and champagnes.

let me know if this is what your looking for?!? if not, i will keep looking. what is the formality of your wedding? casual, lowkey or grand affair?

Thanks for the suggestions Stacey. I like the idea of the brown suits with the champagne suits. Is there a way to tie the persimmon into the ceremony or is that too much. I was initially thinking of having the BM alternate with espresso and persimmon. Can you provide additional examples of flowers and reception decor? Thanks again. My wedding is more on the formal side.

I would actually have the guys in tan pants with brown shirts(or vice versa) and the girls in pink. (brown against the pink would look really great!!)have your florals in ranges of pink shades hot pink to pale pink and accent with vibrant greenery. then in your reception area have tan table linens with brown napkins, white plates set on woven brown plate chargers, then have pink centerpieces, pull in a green and pink cake, etc. you could add a brown sash to girls dresses.

Desperately seeking help on color combos!! I am getting married September 2010 (probably the first or second week, haven’t locked in the exact date)..I know that many people think of this as a fall wedding but technically it is still summer and I don’t think the leaves are changing yet at this point. What I am wondering is do I have to use fall colors (I’m not a big fan of fall colors) or can I use more summer colors? Here are some of the combinations I was thinking of: pink and green…..charcoal grey and pinks…and something like an aqua or tiffany blue and some sort of grey or platinum. And if I went with the last blue combo would it look silly to incorporate some pinks for an accent? I really would like to incorporate pink somewhere! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!!

you could put your bridal party in charcoal grey, blue, or pink! with this floral scheme that set on fabulous grey linens( which darker luxurious grey linens would be stunning with these floral colors too) your not limited to dress colors. just have the girls try on the colors that suit their skintone best and thats it!! the rest will fall easily in place. you have picked a great color scheme, you will definitely not be stressed by matching colors! and this way you can have pink, blue, and grey….lucky you!

Hello. I hope you are doing well :D I am seeking your professional advice ;) on my October wedding. I have been searching through the internet and found a ton of pictures and ideas that I love. I really like the idea of using traditional natural aspects in the decor (such as maple leaves, cranberries, apples, pumpkin, wheat, and dried grasses). But that leaves me with such a wide variety of colors to choose from that I’m utterly overwhelmed. PLEASE PLEASE help me!

Tiffany,
hi! the easiest thing to do here is pick a basic and simple color scheme, then have the pops of color in the florals along with fall foliage. then carry a single color if youwant it bolder onto the napkins. i would put the bm in a neutral color hands down. this will give youmore lead way in pairing bolder colors inthe wedding itself. think champagne, brown, grey, black, navy blue, even a green and cream or white palette will give you plenty of legroom to work with fall colors. what color do you think your bm would like to wear? what would suit their skintone best. i love chamapagne because it is like white you can just about do anything with it. pair it with brown and you have a surefire winner. pair it with black and you have instant classic. i also love black dresses for bm because they will definitley be worn later, add bolder accessories and you have something foolproof. let me know what youthink and if you have some pics you would like to share i would love to see them. i usually ask waht the venue colors are too, it helps me pick colors that will compliment well. talk to you soon!!

Stacey,

Thank you so much for your advice! I’m not sure that my venue technically has colors; it is a castle (mansion designed as a castle) in the mountains of NC. If you would like to take a look the website is here: Castle Events & Weddings But I have to warn you it is not the best website around.

The ceremony will take place in the backyard overlooking the mountain pass (which should look glorious in early October with the foliage change). The reception will take place in the great hall which hosts stone floors, a stone fireplace, vaulted ceilings with exposed wood beams, whitewashed walls, and french doors which lead out to the large stone balcony. Attached are some pictures in the form of a board as you suggested… these are just ideas I had been thinking of. In regards to the BM dresses, my bridesmaids skin tones range from fair to dark as I have 8 of them. I know, I had to match my fiances # of groomsmen, he comes from a large southern family. Anyways, I was hoping that they could wear a bright pop of color, but I guess maybe a neutral color with a colored ribbon? Please let me know what you think. Thank you!

after looking at the venue, which is soooo jawdropping!! i think, now, lots of reds mixed with a little yellow and ornage would look so amazing! since you were wanting the girls in a color that would look great, i am thinking something like this unless this is TOO much for your outdoor affair…

the only thing that i am concerned about is competing with the natural foliage. i have one website i cant get into right now, they are changing some things. i have used it for an example before so i will see if i can find it on another post. be right back!!

I want nice elegant wedding, so what kind of white flowers could they carry then? Would just white roses look ok since I am going to be carrying red roses or is that too much?

emilee,
white roses would be perfect, simple and elegant. make sure you have greenery withthe roses, it will make it even more summery and keep yours with out the greenery, i love red rose bouquet without the greenery.
Tip: if you are on a tight budget then picking one type flower ( whether you get a mixed colored roses or use a single color rose thruout,) will be better on a budget, not to mention more lush looking. for your centerpieces consider using all greenery ( using mixed types of foliage in each beautiful container, draping over the sides, and put a single red rose tucked into a napkin.) it would be stunning look for less.mrgreen: i will give an example of foliage just in case….

Stacey,

I am getting married May 22, 2010 and I cannot think of a gorgeous color to go with the one I have chose, coral. I know there are different shades so it’s hard to show you the right one. My dress is beaded and diomand white, kind of vintage looking and the reception hall is a dark blue?!?! I need some advice….

alicia,
the room is beautiful. i would play off the chandeliers and your dress and bring in different shades of coral from light peach to deep corals, monochromatic style. i think the contrasting colors would work well in the room.
i thought about adding a fresh spring green, but i am worried it will look nautical. do you like pink? this could be added to coral. i have a couple of pics to see if you like the colors. another color that could be added is a soft yellow. okay i am loving the lilac!! it would work for a vintage style dress. just mix light to dark like i suggested with lavender intermixed.

Hi I have a problem  I choose my flowers and now I am at a loss as to what color the bridesmaids dress should be! The flowers are somewhere between grape and maroon with buttery yellow and mauve accent colors. The logical choice would be maroon but I am not sure I want to go that dark . Yelow and mauve are out… Do I have another choice ?

yeila,
it depends on what look your after. can i see a pic of your venue? i might be able to see what would look best with that. cause there are so many shades that look good with peach, coral, and ivory. i personally love the charcoal or brown for the guys and have the girls in grey or brown. the colors would be soooo pretty against it. it also depends on their skintone too. champagne is also another choice with a brown sash. guys in brown with champagne or brown vests. another idea is have the girls in peach with green and coral bouquets.

i would get the guys opinion too. i have a great website that might help. grab a cup of joe and your fh and look thru here to see if something stands out.

i actually love the black and ivory or black and peach. another color to consider is black and mint green. green and peach look fab together! and green is already present in the greenery. the girls in mint green with peach bouquets would be beautiful. i made a board…
i have a couple different looks so you can see which one you may like!! the bouquet pic is more orange but shows how it looks with green.

Hi Stacey,

I really like your ideas. I am getting married August 2010 and I am so confused with the colours i want one minute i like magenta the next minute i like turquoise/aqua blue and may be navy blue so am stuck. I still don’t have a venue so i cant tell you anything about that. But what i know i want some crystals with branch/willow inserted in some flowers for my centerpiece so am not sure what would match with that. I am not a big of pink but i like the darker purpply side of pink. For the flowers i definitly like roses or calla lillies i dont mind pink or red or ivory/cream flowers. What would you recommend? :? Thanks

selina,
thank you! first, let me ask, when you envision your wedding what do you see? without thinking, the ideal will pop in your head. the branches with crystals will be beautiful!! i completely understand with all the beautiful wedding colors and decor, how easy it is to veer in different directions. what type of theme or setting did you want to marry and celebrate in? it will be difficult without a venue, cause without looking at the room layout, i wont know if you will need short or tall centerpieces etc. , the colors or the decor you want may not go well in the room. let me know when you get your venue and i will begin searching right away for the perfect compliments!

Hi Stacey,
Thanks for getting back so quickly. I don’t have a theme per say but I envision my wedding as elegant but not tradiitonal with unique long centerpiece with lots of swarvoski chain crystals, crystals on the table, flowers but not too much and then a bold color maybe either in shades of blue or magenta. I know what i want just hard to explain it. I think the first picture in the link best shows my vision. How ever my concern is finding branches that stand and hold the crystals and stil look good. http://www.etherealdecor.com/crystal_wedding_tree_manzanita_branches.html
The shades of blue and silver on you seasonal section is something i really like… Feathers on effiel tower vases is something i have been considering as well.

With regards to my venue I am having a curtural wedding so its more likely to be a banqueting hall or a hotel basicly large open space with stage and round tables (if possible). I hope this helps.

selina,
i actually have this idea. why not choose simple branches and put into tall glass vases or cylinder vases. in bottom of vase have a bed of rhinestones, then along with your branches why not insert a few jeweled branches? it would give you the look you want without worrying about hanging any crystals on the branches. you said you were getting married next august 2010. actually another idea came to mind have glass vases of tall greenery and add jeweled branches among it. set simple glass votives on the table. i actually think i like this idea best. if you want to cross into fall could you imagine fall leaf branches with jeweled branches within? omg! i think that would be beautiful!!
if you like this let me know.
you said you were leaning more toward magenta. i love that! i think pairing that with brown would be amazing with white centerpieces and jeweled branches. ( your local craft store should have these now, but i bet you could get a sweet deal during the holidays. they may even special order the branches. i know hobby lobby has them and they will work with you!! let me know wah ty you think about pairing magenta with brown, talk to ya soon. i hope the pic shows if it dont lwt me know……

Hello stacey how are ya, I love the picture with the jewelled branches. I am not sure about the brown though i know it would look fab and i like the colour brown i am not a big fan of it for wedding. I like the picture you sent but how can i incorporate the magenta into there as i want to use clear glass vase. I was wondering if I should have the branches then insert magenta branches don’t think will find magenta jewelled branches so do you think pink will do. I was also thinking of having a magenta table runner and then some votives with some crystals scattered/petals. What do you think. I know i keep changing my mind but am loving the colour purple at the moment do you think incorprating that would be too loud. Also would you think having purply feather plumes on effiel towers and branches with magenta jewelled branches as above would be too much. http://media.merchantcircle.com/28083788/P1040232_full.jpeg
I just love the feather plumes idea but i also love the branch idea becuase it beautiful and unique :?. Oh and by the way am from the UK so its not as easy to find the local craft store lol. Thanks

selina,
pink would work. you can get plain branches and spray paint them in a magenta then adding clear jeweled branches. yes i do like your idea sounds beautiful!!
ah!! i had a previous bride that was from the uk and they said that too. oh yes! i love the plume feathers. however, try going to saveoncrafts.com they should ship to the uk, there you will find everything you need. actually no i dont think it would be to much, it would suit a venue that had colored lighting etc. it would look very celebrity!! i would put it against a neutral cloth with a magenta or a purple runner though. think champagne linens with a colored runner.

hi stacey thanks for all you help and ideas. I feel like i know where i am going now. I really love the colours. As i said i am having cultural wedding and might have to change my colours as the family members where matching clothes with a hint of my theme colour. Therefore i was thinking if I need to my other option is blue as in turqiouse or may be aqua blue but I wouldnt know what kind of flowers I can have to add to the venue but have the same centerpieces as discussed above. Thanks :D

what is the color scheme your thinking of changing too? are you still wanting the jeweled branches? have you got your venue yet? if so, can i see a pic of it?

Hi stacey, well its just after discussing with family members they suggested that it would be diffcult to get cultural dresses in magenta or purple although I havent ruled out these colours i just wanted to have an alternative if i can’t choose magenta and purple. I was thinking turqiouse or aqua blue would that still work with the jewelled branches because i still want to have that. And also what kind of flowers can i have for my bouquet and the bridesmaids. I still havent got a venue. Thanks again

selina,
i guess the main question i need to ask is do you want it colorful or something serene but beautiful like aqua and brown ( for example) or white. i really want to help you pull in the magenta or purple you want through the flowers. would you consider pairing those colors with a aqua blue? or is that too colorful? what do you want the girls to wear? i am so skeptical of the colors and your venue. i would hate saying a color scheme without you having a definite place cause its a high probability it may clash, and that wouldnt look good in pics.
*magenta wedding
*magenta wedding board

once we get the color scheme down i can pair teh right flowers with it. you should carry callas and roses, which you love. and the girls just callas.
are you wanting to pair the aqua with white and brown? touches of magenta or purple in the mix? i strongly urge you to use clear jeweled branches and white branches ( like in pic) and have colored tablecloths cause you dont know your venue colors yet. then it would be easy to go ahead and buy the branches;set aside. then you could just rent the colored linens. you could also add colored water to these branches in purple/magenta or aqua using food dye. or have floralytes submerged into water for the colored effect( google search and google image) they are very reasonable. another idea is have an all white color scheme with the clear and white branches, tablecloths etc. then pull in purple or magenta lighting to give it a wash of color. stunning!
i so wish i was able to pull better suggestions but without the venue or other details i am limited. please let me know later and i will do whatever i can to pull this together for you!! you will need a basic color scheme first and the venue. :meh: it will make it pretty difficult without it.
