Choosing Your Wedding Colors: A Guide for Designing Brides

There's no question: choosing wedding colors is one of the earliest, trickiest tasks a bride has to cross off the list. You can't even talk your florist until you've worked this out.

And even if you're getting the cake from Ron Ben-Israel, he's not going to ask you whether your wedding theme draws elements from 14th century Venetian court dress ... he'll ask you about your colors.

A mere generation ago, planning the wedding was a lot easier. It expressed your social class, and your parents' tastes. Even if they had particular ideas, the market couldn't offer much in terms of individual design. But these days, your wedding expresses your personal style in a way it never has before. Translation? The pressure's on!

Sussing Out Your Style

Some brides can solve the color question without thinking too much about style. They might have a life-long love for purple. Or, their venue might have strong hues they need to coordinate with. Or, when they picture their wedding, they already see their bridesmaids awash in certain colors. Easiest of all: sometimes they already have a theme in mind.

For others, it's not that simple. Still, you can quickly pin down the styles that get your heart beating almost as fast as your fiancé does. Does Martha Stewart's relaxed, preppy look command your undying devotion? Do you pray you can someday actually subscribe to H&M magazine? Did Vera Wang's modern, moody Bolshevik collections incite heavy breathing? This gives you some major clues.

Home Decor

Destination: Home, Sweet Home

Still, even if you don't consider yourself a fashionista or a Martha devotee, all's not lost. Instead, let's turn our eyes back to home and hearth.

Many brides aren't just looking forward to a wedding, they're also buzzing with anticipation over the dream house they plan to share with their beloved. And in the process of hunting down this love nest, most spent lots time mulling over their personal style. What did you picture in your mind's eye as the right setting for your new life together? A rangy colonial with a gabled roof? A warm, log-sided farmhouse with a wood stove in the kitchen? Or did you dream of finding a downtown loft bursting with recessed lighting and monochromatics, and flip through the new IKEA catalog to pick out your cabinets?

Or consider: do you dream of filling your home with antiques you can pass down to your children? Look to seasonal-inspired color schemes and ballrooms. Plan to drape your bedroom ceiling in yards of mosquito netting? A fairytale wedding drenched in candelabras, gold braid and gauzy swags might fit the bill. Collect exotic objects from all over the planet? Try an art museum for your setting, and a sophisticated or daring palette.

And if you're one of those eclectic types who pairs Amish rocking chairs with aboriginal artifacts, use this old designer trick: think of the last bit of art or furniture you bought to spruce up your house. That tells you what's on your mind lately.

Pink & Champagne Wedding

Your Secret Romantic Style

So, you know your domestic style is Eclectic Contemporary. Congratulations: that means you're holding a black-and-white wedding with chartreuse accents and ostrich feathers in a huge SoHo loft, right?

Hold it: not so fast. Why? Because many brides have a special romantic style that exists in a universe by itself. You might be thrilled picking out Art Deco style spaceships for your pendant lighting. And yet, when it comes your wedding, you might picture something a lot more traditional.

So even if you're the most fashion-forward girl on the block, take a moment to consider whether your wedding vision doesn't actually go back in time by few hundred years. You might secretly harbor a special place in your heart for New England autumns, Victorian elegance, English cottage style, or even timeless fairy tales. And if that's true, rest assured you've got plenty of company.

The Gown's the Guide

But how do you tell if this stylistic gotcha's operating in your case? Here's the secret: go get your dress.

For many brides, The Dress is a journey that starts with many preconceptions, but ends in the unexpected. Finding the dress is usually a case of recognizing it once you've tried it on, not knowing ahead of time what you'll wear.

And once you've found it, the dress will offer some big clues about your Romantic style. Captured by a demure ivory gown covered in Alençon lace, with a button-back closure? Start your search with pastels and neutrals that suit a 1930's vintage or feminine garden wedding. Fell hard for a sleek, diamond white v-neck that's all about the lines? Investigate the crisper, more playful palettes we see today, such as black and white, aqua, bright pinks, lime green and corals.Seasonal

Adjust for Geography, Venue and Season

Now that you've unearthed your personal style, it's time to look outward. If your style's traditional, for example, start with a hotel ballroom. If you want a strong seasonal feel for fall, try a rustic barn. Cultivated gardens go well with traditional, Martha-esque tints. Tents weddings are a blank slate: you can make them as classic or brazenly modern as your heart desires.

Geography, too, plays a role in your colors. Tropical affairs in the blinding sun are often showcases for the brightest hues of all: coral and orchid, for example, or aqua and orange. Evening white-tie affairs in New York City? Not so much.

Many brides are in the middle, and want to weave in at least a seasonal hint. Fortunately for them, most seasons have palettes both traditional and modern. For example, a classic summer wedding might feature cornflower blue or sage, where a modern one draws on fuchsia and lime green, or orange, pink and black.

Even flowers help set the style. For example, a profusion of pinks in a bouquet of roses and peonies says English cottage. Mini-sunflowers and chrysanthemums says New England country. On the other hand, the color blocking in a hand-tied bouquet of purple callas is strongly modern.

Essential Color-Choosing Tools

Now you've got a style in mind, let's get to the art of actually picking colors. Here are a few can't-miss tools.

Color Schemer

You'll need to create a free account, but this wonderful site has user-created palettes aplenty that you can search by keyword. Once you've registered, hit the "search schemes" button and enter words that fit your vision, like "fall,""garden," "sunset," "winter." Or free-associate with adjectives like "nautical," "peaceful," "modern," "preppy" or even "trendy." We promise, you'll be hooked.

Sherwin-Williams Color Generator

Hit their site, and choose "FIND COLOR." Click on any color that draws you, and you'll automatically pull up two accent colors that complement it. Cool.

Big Huge Labs Palette Generator

Have a photo on your hard drive that seems to capture your wedding's heart and soul? Upload it to a palette generator, which will kick out most of the main hues involved. Unless you're on the beach, use one of the more neutral, calming colors as a primary (e.g., use it for bridesmaids or table linens), and the more nervous, high-energy colors as accents (use these in table napkins, chair sashes, ribbons, and some of your flowers.)

Make a Mood Board

Once you've narrowed down some favorites, start grabbing photos (for your own personal use, of course). Make a special folder on your hard drive, and save photos that seem to fit the colors, setting and season you're going for. If you've got any photo editing software, start putting them together in one big image. This will tell you more than thousands of words how your look will play out.

Purple Green

Making the Most of Your Choices

Now that you've got your colors, how can you really make them shine? A problem that plagues some brides is an oversized fear of chaos. Although it's simple, most weddings aren't at their best when the groomsmen's vests and ties exactly match the bridesmaids' gowns, which in turn match the bride's sash.

So, choose your colors wisely and stick with them, but strive for designing more than matching. Brown and ivory are neutrals when chosen thoughtfully, so use their many shades for a sophisticated, monochromatic look. If the bridesmaids wear mocha or persimmon, the men will look great in chocolate brown. And even if the flowers call for a palette of orange and yellow, let a little green or cream sneak in for dimension. Check for too much of a good thing: when the entire wedding party wears matching brown or black, the effect can be overpowering.

And They Lived Happily Ever After ...

When all's said and done, you're sure to have a great feeling about your colors, and how they fit your personal style. Even if the scheme you hit on isn't "I've loved that all my life!", it might be "I never would have thought of that, but I love these together!"

Picking your colors is a journey, just like finding the dress, or knocking all those planning items off your checklist. But hitting on the right colors, theme and setting for the ultimate expression of your own Romantic style? That can be the pleasure of a lifetime.

Need some advice. My wedding colors are Lapis (dark purple), platinum, and black. My dress is ivory and the groom is wearing a grey tux. My question is, should he wear an ivory shirt and tie or could it be white. I just can’t picture the ivory going well with the grey tux. Attached is a picture of the tux.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Melissa,
The white shirt will be fine, but I wouldn’t go with a stark white. Ivory or white goes well with grey. I would look at this skintone to see which shade suits him best.

  2. adeola

hi stacey am planning to get married in sept2011.i would love to wear red shoes and have a pure red roses bouquet with my groom using a red rose as butonniere as well.I am rather confused as the colors of the day are pink and grey. Please what color of tie can my groom wear and shir and waistcoat that will go with my red roses.and am rather confused as well on what color of shirts the groomsmen should wear. Please advise .I look forward to hearing from you soonest.Keep up the good work

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Adeola,
Your colors are pink and grey? If you are using pink and grey I would add red touches in the the florals thru out. It also depends on what the girls are wearing, if you could give me the details of the dresses etc. I could help with the coordinating the colors. Also what color of tuxes will the guys be wearing? grey or black?

  3. Inoka

    Hi,
I’m planing to do a service wedding.(AIR FORCE).so can you help me to select colours for my bridemates.
    :?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Inoka,
No problem!! Lets begin with your fave colors and your venue. ( Do you have a link?) Season etc. Or do you already have a color scheme? If so what are your colors? You will want colors that look great on their skintones.

  4. edoro

    hi there,
my wedding is in august and i really love orange. what colours can i use(not blue, green, pink or brown)

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Edoro,
It can depend on your venue. You can just use a monochromatic color scheme of orange in varying shades from light to deep. Have the girls in a gorgeous shade of orange and pair bouquets of mixed orange shades. Grey or khaki is a nice color for the guys. A solid orange wedding can be beautiful. Another color is champagne to pair with orange.

      • edoro

thanks Stacey but I would love 1 or 2 contrasting colours. The walls of the venue are white. Any tips?

      • edoro

thanks stacey. I was wondering if a combination of different shades of orange soft pink and apple green would work. You see , I’m Nigerian and I would want a combination that is not too cold(or vibrant) and would go with our skin tone. Are there any ideas on how to combine these colours in the guys clothes, bouquets, BM dresses, tables, centerpieces, and decor? Really need your help :? Thanks for all your help.Waiting eagerly for your assistance :thankyou:

P.S I wouldn’t mind any other colour combination suggestions( as long as it’s not purple!) :D

      • edoro

Hi Stacey! thanks for all your help so far but I’ve really run into a jam! Some of my friends think orange and pink is ”too much”( especially with our african skin tones!) and suggest i go with orange, brown and gold instead! I think that combination has been overdone here and is rather boring. Please could you suggest as many colour combinations as possible with orange?!I’m at my wit’s end! thanks a million!

P.S I don’t have any links to pics of the venue but I’ll take photos and upload them asap. the walls are white though ,and will go with any colour combo!

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Edoro,
I would consider the pink and orange, just have the girls in a classic color and keep the other colors in the florals. Like this tones here:

Think more along the lines of blush and apricot. Consider your bm skintones, but as the bride go with the colors that you love and make your day special. There are loads of ways around this. have them wearing champagne or brown, then put soft to medium tones of pinks and oranges in the florals.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Edoro,
          Total beauty…

          Look at this …

          This is enchanting…

African Medium: The bridesmaid gown in colors like Navy, Jewel Tones, Reds, Silver, Gold, Salmon and Purple can make your maids look elegant while Light Yellow, Mint and Taupe can be little more than the daring colors.

African Dark: If you want your bridesmaid to complement your dressing, try Jewel Tones, Reds, Silver, Gold, Salmon, Oranges, Fuschia, Lime, Black, Navy, Hunter, Burgundy, Blues, Ivory, Purple and Cobalt. She may not feel comfortable in Light Yellow, Mint,Lavender and White

      • edoro

Thanks Stacey! Could my maid of honour wear burnt orange while the other BM’s wear baby pink? What neutral colour would go best-ivory,gold or cream? My fiance is wearing a black tux-how do I coordinate orange, and pink into his waist coat and tie(what will his grooms men wear-they’re also wearing black suits?) Eagerly awaiting your suggestions!!

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Edoro,
I was thinking have the girls in champagne and pair the brighter colors in the florals. Then pull in black and champagne tuxes with small pink and orange boutonnieres. Just keep it classic and not to vibrant and warm. Very pleasing to the eye and in pics.

Some past boards I revamped to show you the colors.

      • edoro

neutrals seem good but in a previous post you said i could use a shade of pink in the BMs dresses(was thinking of a VERY light pink). Would that not go with burnt orange? champagne for the guys sounds good- so is that black suits& champagne waist coats ? Waht colour would their ties be? I would like to incorporate just a hint of pink in the florals, ivoryflowers and varying shades of orange and a white background-what do you think ? Thanks for your help!

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Edoro,
I think what you have wuld sound good. The board I revamped above was a shade of pink just to show how beautiful it can look. A lighter shade of pink would work equally well. If you are using pink and orange in the bm dresses just pull in a simple classic black and white or balck and ivory tux. Pair matching bout. to the girls dresses.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Edoro,
Oops, forgot the bouquet. Just soemthing to comapre side by side with the others pics. Use your shade of white whether it be ivory, white, champagne etc. for the guys tux shirts. I only put the tux pic and bouquet pic in this one so you can see it can look smashing. Hope this helps!!

  5. kukus

  6. Sara

    Hello!
My wedding will be sept 2012 and I’d like to have teal but I don’t know what other color can I combine with it. My wedding is going to be in Dom.Rep.(small banquet hall) :?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Sara,
Teal can be paired with purple, pink, ivory, black/white, etc. So many colors can work. COuld you give me a link to the venue so I can see what would work best? thanks!!

  7. Ada

Hello stacey,my wedding is july 2011.am having issues choosing two other colors that goes with ivory.am using a hall for the reception,i was thinking of ivory, light pink, pastel green and light purple.Ada from nigeria

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Ada,
What are the venue colors? Do you have a link or picture? Your colors sound beautiful and will go with alot of settings.

  8. Devin

    Hi,

I am having a very hard time choosing colors for my mid-september wedding I was wondering if you have any suggestions. the wedding will be held outside at sunset in a gazebo. I know that I want to use lots of candles and possibly some white christmas-like lights to illuminate the ceremony.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Devin,
With this setting, you are in luck, because you can choose pretty much any color you wish! What are some colors that you lean too? A good palce to look is in your everyday wardrobe, your home, pairing a couples birthstones, etc. Actually for a sunset wedding, I coudl see lots of white or cream. it is very versatile, would suit the grounds, lighter colors are best for evening weddings too. Other colors that can be seen are: reds, pinks, yellows, peaches and oranges. Warm colors show up better, coool colors like: blues and purples can fade to grey/ in the background. If you use deeper colors then pair light colors with it or lots of lighting.

  9. Aline

I would greatly appreciate your feedback on wedding colors. I’ve always loved fuchsia and am considering a fuchsia/burnt orange/black combination. I also really like teal so am also considering a teal/fuchsia/black combination. Or, another combo could be teal/orange/black. My wedding is in November 2011 in San Diego so I’m not sure how much I need to consider the season in making my color choices. I’d really like my bridesmaids to wear black (or maybe an espresso color). The reception venue is very sweet and quaint (a house overlooking the ocean) so I don’t want things to be too formal either, although my dress is satin and could change the mood to more formal. Here is a picture of my dress and also of the venue.

  10. gracie

does orange red match with olive green? with the green being a sash for the orange dress? what colur of shoes and jewellery wpould best match such a dress? ;)

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Gracie,
It can if done right. I would pair a simple metallic with it. But make sure to look at the skintone as to the metal color, cause some look best in gold, some in silver. What season and color scheme is your wedding? If you are searching for colors, I could take a look at your venue pic/link. Also olive can be difficult for some skintones, you will want a complimenting color. ;) :D

  11. Nicole Ihezie

please what other two colours can one pair with purple? :? :? :?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Nicole,
Could you post a venue link/pic, so I can see what colors can go with the purple? Also, when is your wedding? Are you having a theme?

  12. Steph

    Hi there,

im getting Married tropical North QLD, Kewarra Beach Resort they have a lovely beach and beautiful tropical gardens I need some help with colours for bridesmaid. My dress is Satin Ivory. soooo unsure! I was thinking really neautral colours or like fawn mocha light chocolate etc. :?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Steph,
Your location is so beautiful. For the bm’s pick a color that works with their skintone. Classic colors are always perfect and timeless, also serves as a great base for a number of floral color combos.

  13. Nancy

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Mutya,
Reds or shades of pinks would look very nice. You could also do a simple white with lots of greenery. Are there any certain colors that you lean too?

      • Mutya

        Hi Stacey,

Thank you for your reply…white and pink are really my target colors…thank you for giving me idea of adding red into it.

  20. YVONNE

hi i’m having my wedding in Zimbabwe, sometime in december it will be summer here, i wnt o use champange and latte, if you can assist with pictures that will be awesome

  21. ranae

So my colors are fuschia and grey. My question to you is what do you think of the color scheme? my sister said maybe i should do black tuxes and fuschia for the girls with platium silver.

  22. Tiffany

hello! my wedding date is may 26, 2012 and i cant decide on my wedding colors. our ceremony/reception will be on the majectic boat in pittsburgh pa. and also should i pick a certain theme for my wedding? im SO lost please help!! :?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Tiffany,
beautiful and has a nuetral decor, so you can go with what you love. Do you have any preferences on color etc? Themes can make some things easier but are optional.

  23. ranae

Hi stacy we are working on these centerpeices for my wedding it’s not complety done yet we just wanted to see what it look like on the table, should we go bigger or just leave them this size? my colors are fuschia/grey. My linen will be somewhat to this picture but with a fuschia runner.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Ranae,
it depends on the venue ceiling. If it has a taller ceiling then you can make them taller. They look like a nice size in the pic for an average celing venue.

  24. TANIA-LEE LACOUR

    Hi Stacey,
A friend of mine is getting married in Oct (spring time here) and wants to use the colours gold & white but cant decide on an accent colour. She also loves the idea of a Royal theme but has fish bowl centrepieces. Please could you put some ideas together?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Tania-Lee,
Fish bowl centerpieces with fish? If so, I dont recommend using live fish, it could be disastrous if they die. Gold and white is a perfect color scheme for a royal theme and anytime of year.
      * some pics to look thru
      * more pics
However, floating candles in the bowl is stunning.
      * like this

      • TANIA-LEE LACOUR

Hi Stacey….lol she likes the fish bowl idea but no not with actual fish in them. She does actually like the floating candles idea. :-)
        Thanks for the links

  25. ranae

Hello Stacy were getting married 9/10/11, my question to you is my FH and i do not drink and do not want an open bar how do we adress this issue. we are willing to do soda , so how would we tell guest cash bar.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Ranae,
A cash bar is never a good choice. Since you do not drink then yes axe the alcohol. It will shave alot from your budget. Talk to your venue and tell theme the situation, there may be free refills, it is worth a shot asking. Since every place has their own policy. I do not drink either so understanding your situation is easy. Most receptions that have alcohol go longer into the night but a non alcohol event doesnt have to end early( unless you wish it too). have several things added, like games for the guests to play. Since you are not serving alcohol, I would provide the water and soda, punch, tea, etc. There are loads of wholesale places that can provide this on the cheap. Included in lieu of a special cocktail would be a milkshake or coke float, ice cream soda. Something that gives comfort. When your inviting people to a party, you never ask them to pay. Here in Louisiana there are no open bars and most dont have alcohol at all. We have beautiful weddings with mostly short receptions so the couple can be on their way to their honeymoon.

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Ranae,
        * see what others say
        * more tips
Don’t worry about stating anything on the invite if your going nonalcoholic or otherwise. If you do decide to have a cash bar-put no host bar on left hand corner of invite. Or under wedding reception info.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Ranae,
Forgot to mention. One wedding I saw, Had the info of No Host Bar Reception
Cocktail Menu and Prices Available on Request( it was a separate slip of paper inserted inside the reception invite)

  26. ola

my wedding is coming up and i want to know if its ok to do olive green lime green and orange. also which third colour can i match with olive green and chocolate if i choose this combo

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Ola,
Could I see your venue link or pic? I want to see what works best. If you choose chocolate and olive, adding a pop of orange to that would be stunning. That will flow better than the 2 greens with orange.
      * this is just great

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Ola,
so is this! Just beautiful anytime of year.
        * check it out
        * real wedding

      • ola

lovely pics, thanks stacey. will get a pic of d hall soon.the wedding is goin to b may 7, 2011 in lagos nigeria and its and an islamic one. want to make a dress but dont want white, ivory or gold.what colours can i work with with my olive chocolate and pop of orange theme.how can i combine ds colors 4 d stage drapery, chair covers and table cloth.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Ola,
Once I get a pic I can see what drapery will work etc. Are you wanting a colored dress?

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Ola,
I did find this. You could easily do brown overlays on a rich olive linen.

        • ola

thanks stacy, here are the pics of the venue.yes i want to do coloured dress.so wat colors would you sugest for the dress, also would the olive, chocolate and orange theme work inthis space ,drapery etc.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Ola,
The colors will work very well. Especially the pic with the brighter burnt oranges( the outdoor setting from pretty chicky). It is a neutral colored space so the colors will compliment.
          * this is bm dress colors and skintones, but will work for this too, since you want a colored dress
I would normally say gold but you didnt want that color. If your skintone can pull it off why not look into a shade of orange.

        • ola

thanks for your help, still havnt made a final decision, i like yellow and im thinking of using olive chocolate and yellow instead of orange. or all the four. would this be a colour disaster.whats ur take on this.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Ola,
You could, like in some previous pics I sent, have orange and yellow. Are you rethinking some of the colors.

    Brides,
some new boards, the ones with the colored dresses could be for post receptions or unique wedding style bride.

I’m having the hardest time picking wedding colors for our August wedding. I’m going between a dark purple with green or dark blue with yellow. My fiance really wants dark blue with yellow as those are the colors of his favorite baseball team, but I really don’t like yellow flowers. Further, I initially picked dark purple so my mother went out and bought a blue MOB dress, but then I changed my mind so….any help would be great!!

    My dress is:

So I love the colors Aqua and Fuscia but everyone keeps telling me these are more fun and modern colors. I also love Gerber Daisies which is fun and modern..however I want an elegant look. Can anyone give me ideas on how to incorporate these ideas into an elegant evening wedding…or should I just start from scratch??? Any help would be appreciated…the wedding’s not until June 2012. Thanks

:D ;) :P   :? :love2:    more »
