Exposed to ever-greater heights of design and personalization, the savvy Internet shopper is looking for something more. Something "them." Something perfectly tailored to one particular special occasion.
What they don't want is something off-the-rack that says generic cufflinks or one-style-fits-all tuxedo shoe. For more and more of us, that's like going back to network TV on a 19 inch screen after wallowing in the joys of high-definition plasma, digital cable and a TiVo.

"The guy who walks into the tuxedo store for a rental two days before the event is not the guy buying the specialty cummerbund or the novelty cufflinks," says David Steele of Tuxedos Direct. "But the guys shopping online are used to a lot more choice. They know exactly what they want ... a Mardi Gras or camouflage vest, or motorcycle cufflinks. And they know they can enter some terms into a search engine and find it. Instantly."
So who's buying all these cufflinks? Definitely men, says Steele. Oh, brides buy them as gifts for their fiancés, but by and large, it's the guys themselves that point and click on these diminutive fashion statements.
Today's fashion-forward cufflinks break down into trends you'll find elsewhere, such as geek chic, cool goth, and special interest (such as NASCAR or motorcycles).
Think of cufflinks as the hardware equivalent to the groom's cake. They're not supposed to outshine the main wedding cake or God forbid, the bride, but they're a stealthy way to pack some masculine style into a pretty girly event.
