Real, Genuine, Actually Useful Advice on Picking Your Wedding Colors

Let’s talk about choosing wedding colors.

This is one item on the “to do” list that drives brides crazy. Even we tomboy brides who had no nine-year-old concept of the ultimate wedding — somehow, we instinctively know that nothing can be done until we choose. Those. Colors.

And the cake, wedding party attire, flowers — they’re all totally out of the question until we get it straight.

Let’s admit it, most of the advice on choosing wedding colors is awful. How many times can you read that red’s energizing and blue’s soothing without wanting to gouge out your eyes with a toothbrush? And didn’t simply picking your favorite colors lose some of its appeal around the time you stopped eating rubber cement?

Interestingly, there’s a trend afoot to pick the colors that make you look good. For example, if you’re an ash blonde, you’ll probably look fantastic against a backdrop of charcoal or navy blue, and not so great against canary yellow. But maybe you want to save that sort of Machiavellian planning for your first home instead.

Because when it comes to picking colors, you probably want one thing. You don’t necessarily want the colors you’ve loved since Bobby kissed Kimmy in the third grade, assigning Kimmy to your personal hit list forever.

And you probably don’t care about any 17th-century symbolism. You probably don’t need the colors you’d choose from Rorschach blots if Rorschach blots weren’t black. You simply want your colors to be hot. You know, like if Paris Hilton wandered into your reception, that’s what she’d say. Right?

Seeing’s Believing

To choose hot colors, most of us have to see them. Together. Fortunately, we live in an increasingly design-centric society that makes this dead simple — anyone can go to Target and pick up some sublimely designed stuff for under 30 bucks. Even better for we wired brides, we don’t even have to get out of our butt-cradling chairs.

Start from the top — think like a designer. Go to Pantone’s Trends section, and look over the color picks they’re predicting for this season and next.

For example, Pantone says 2007 shows a softening of the strong, bright colors that have dominated for seasons past, and what’s happening now is “surprising neutrals” with bright accents … really bright. Really high-energy. Tarragon and Cafe Creme for bases. Hollyhock Purple and Green Sheen (think Granny Smith apples on acid) as accents.

Tuck that in your brainpan, because now it’s time to go shopping for all these colors in action. Although what you’ll see in the catalogs are the ghosts of seasons past, it’s true. Because it takes time for colors to materialize into the flesh of draperies, slip covers and wall paint. That doesn’t matter — the colors you’ll find look fresh, and they’ll still look fresh for your wedding even if your big day’s in 2008.

Ready? Let’s go.

“In”-spiration

Highly designed cards and custom stationery are totally fun way to get a bird’s eye view of what’s hot. Designers have fun with cards. They give into whims. They’re not restricted by what people can stand on their couches. Get a quick color infusion by checking out stationary sites like the aptly-named Fabulous Stationery.

“Brown’s the New Black” — Even for 2007

You continue to hear that everywhere. Even in weddings — especially in weddings. Want instant confirmation? Let’s go shopping at the right kind of online home furnishings catalogs. Not the ones that are so out there, they’re selling you pink faux-fur cozies for your screwdrivers, and not the ones that are so generic that the only color scheme you can really pick out is red, white and blue.

You need to check out companies that are stylish but not freaky, like Pottery Barn and Chiasso. You’ll develop your own techniques, but I think the fastest way to see hot color combos in action is to look at the bedding. Comforters and duvets and quilts are huge canvases on which designers get bold, unlike curtains and couches which are usually safe, neutral and conservative. Let’s check out the brown and blue combo which is hot in any scene, most definitely including weddings.

See the similarities? Inhabit shows you a super-mod interpretation of the same scheme Domain has, only Domain is nostalgic and soft about it. Your wedding could lean one way or the other. You could doll up your cake with any one of these patterns. The colors would be similar, but the looks would be wildly different. You could steal those great op-art shapes from Inhabit and weave them into your invites, your plate chargers, your napkins.

Now let’s peek behind the door at some seasonal color swatches.

Pottery Barn shows a lot of bold reds paired with wheats and golds. Oh, and hey, there’s espresso and blue again.

Want something funkier? Let’s check out the fresh, fruity hues of West Elm. Hey! Brown and blue again! But you also see another hot color combo that isn’t quite as obvious: apple green and coral. (Or in West Elm’s playbook, “leek” and “copperplate.” Coral and apple are hot. And they’re hot in weddings, too.

Great. But Could You Just Spell it Out For Me?

Sure. Try this:

But I’m Having a Spring Wedding. What Now?

It’s simple: go for taupe. You want pastel version of the season’s full-strength brights.

Try taupe bridesmaid gowns with chartreuse or baby pink sashes for springtime sophistication. And consider adding some feminine, floral patterns.

Lift Up Those Wings, Little Sparrow

Okay, this could go on and on, but you get the point. So it’s time to set you free with some of our favorite spots to steal inspirations from.

When you’re done, come back here and report what color schemes stole your heart.

nyl,
love the venue!! it looks like a villa. can i get an idea of the vision you see? i could see something tuscan or spanish in this room. those rust/terra cotta linens really set it off. you could do a mix of grapes, candlelight, and vanilla white roses. but the first thing that popped in my mind was the linens as shown, lots of vanilla white roses in tall containers and lots of candlelight in glass votives dripping with vanilla white rose petals. it would scream romantic elegance. but i didnt know if you preferred color or subtle. looking forward to your reply!!

My wedding is on Fourth of July. We are going with a barbeque style wedding and keeping it patriotic. I want red white and blue, but not BOLD, FLAG red white and blue. What to do? How can I incorporate these colors without making it seem like the post-holiday sale at the dollar store?

Hi, I am having a wedding in June, and I was leaning towards the colors black, white and ivory for a more elegant tone. I do feel pressure to have some sort of color since it’s spring but I can’t decide on one. I would feel better about my decision to have just black, white and ivory if I could visualize it more, but I can’t find any examples or pictures (plus I need something to show my vendors). I saw the combination on a show and really liked it. Do you think that is too plain for a spring time wedding, and if so, do you have any other color suggestions (except for yellow because a family member just used that color in their wedding and I don’t want to look like a copy cat)
Thanks for your help!!

Hi Stacey! LOVE your site! Has been very helpful so far. I’m getting married in May 2010 and am having a rough time picking colors. This is not my first marriage but is my fiance’s. My three daughters, ages 19, 15, and 9 will be in the wedding, and daughter #3 really wants to incorporate blue (”a sea blue”) into the theme. I’m not really picky about the colors, but just don’t want everyone to look like dyed Easter eggs. The wedding itself will be held in a chapel (picture included) that seems very neutral to me. Can suggest another color that would go well? Thinking of using silver as an accent as well, or is that just overkill. We have to choose which “rooms” to have our reception in (again, photos attached). Would one work better than the other? Thanks so much in advance!!

Thank you so much Stacey, I love all these ideas but before I commit to teal, cream and silver would appreciate some thoughts on aqua-blue, pale yellow (David bridal’s maize), with green (shade unsure). Although it’s a December wedding weather will still be warm as we live in Florida and it will be a garden wedding. Reception is being held in old plantation house that has beautiful veranda with rocking chairs and just wondering 1. Do these colours even work well together? and 2. If so, would they work in the type of setting I have described or are these colours more appropriate for a beach wedding.

I am also attempting to attach pics of 2 invites that I really like the look and color of that I would really like to use as inspiration.

Thanks again,

Sharah

Babylene,
Hi, i love that!! i am a sucker for green and gold!! i would do a simple reception of gold and white and have apple green centerpieces and napkins. i would actually use a light gold. Even consider renting gold eating utensils or chargers. if you want to stick with “silver utensils that is ok” jut consider the chargers. do you know waht would be beautiful? have apple green linens topped with a light gold with gold embroidery design, have clear glass votives, real green apples floating in tall glass cylinders.

Hi Stacey,

My church is white interior & blue exterior. I actually wanted to use blue/white as my color theme, but my friends say it doesn’t match the color of my gown so the color combination would not look nice. They told me to use either red/white or lilac/white.

I would prefer a clean streamlined look.

Thanks for your advises. =)

alicia,
hi, after studying the colors of the venue, i came up with a shade of blue (teal) to compliment it. this color can be changed to a blue of your liking, however i would stick to blues other than navy, i saw it will give it a fourth of july feel. royal blue looked very nice. the cake in the pic is more of a red( couldnt find a burgundy cake) but if the all red cake isnt what you were hoping for then a white and blue cake topped with the green orchids that have burgundy centers. i did this to pull a cohesive look with the red runner along with the blue in the church. for the main flowers in the church i was thinking of two alter arrangements at the front with mostly white flowers, white roses, white hydrangea, and white orchids with the burgundy centers also green orchids with burgundy can be added but just a touch. i think a more white palette would work well in this venue. another thing you can do is add a aisle runner to cover some of the red if you prefer. i couldnt tell how wide the aisile was by the pic but you can get a runner to custom fit. for aisle decor i thought minimal was best. tall cylinders with floating candles ( maybe add a floating orchid) this will give more of a stream line vibe. the reception was a toss up between 2 pics. if you wnat white linens, then using a blue runner would look fab. also think about using floating orchids for centerpieces here too. i thought adding a touch of red was perfect. the green orchids should have enough in the center for this look too. i hope you like it! if not let me know and i we will go from there!!
i also listed the other reception pic. i loved the floating orchids, this arrangement would look great on top of the teal linens too!!

sharah,
you could actually go with a teal and white or cream and add silver to the mix. keep it super simple and elegant. perfect for the intimate affair. i would use simple white linens, have teal napkins, silver chargers, white plates, glassware. you can pick up your own silver chargers at walmart for a couple bucks a piece. with holidays coming you could get the shimmery silver ones. for centerpieces keep that simple. white roses mixed with berry stems. add votives in teal in simple clear glass. the look would be timeless and beautiful without a lot of fuss. teal makes a room look fresh, while ivory or cream makes it warmer. you can also pair this with black or brown for sophistication.
not exactly teal but a beautiful table setting that could accomodate your colors……

*jennie’s wedding the knot table setting with green

okay i admit this has spring summer or winter written all over it. i have been waiting to use this and now i can!! yeah!
*elegant affair
*teal wedding boards

another great classy option is just using teal and gold with white. this is super elegant. the key is to look around in the garden what colors are blooming there? i wouldnt go out of the range of those colors. unless you use white( which i highly recommend) because it wont compete with the surroundings and it will blend in effortlessly. you wont have to wonder if it will clash. i persaonally would go with teal, white, and either silver or gold. use lush white flowers. you can warm it up with brown or crisp with black. champagne or copper is another idea. i wasnt sure where you lived ( climate etc.) warm, cold? just so you can see a version of how it can look…

Hello all,
I’m getting married October 2009. Our colors are green, black and white. Green because we both like the color and the bridesmaids (our little sisters, five girls ranging from 16-7) will look awesome in it. Black and white because those are the colors of piano keys. The pictures are the rough sketches of my dress and the maid-of-honor’s dress (the bridesmaids have basically the same one, but with a white sash).

I was wondering about two things:
1) what should Isuggest our mothers wear? They both have brown hair, light skin, and are both only about 44 years old.
2) does any one have suggestions on flowers? I’m hopeless at them.

We’re rather eclectic, bohemian-type, non-formal, people. I’m a tomboy except for the fact that dress-design has been my hobby since I was a little girl. Any suggestions?
PS-Sorry for saying so much.

ashley irene,
usually the mothers pick fromthe color scheme. they could wear a nice shade of green or a color complimenting green that looks great on their skintones.
your flowers should be loose unstructured. i am also thinking succulents. your flowers should be all green and white. it would look best in this scheme. think anything that can be picked from a garden or field.

love the color scheme!! i would have the girls in champagne cause the deep but soft yellow bouquets will pop against that color beautifully!! have the guys in brown with brown vests. i would add white to this. if you want it to be a tad fun then why not have white linens with white napkins and yellow napkin rings. use brown containers with yellow flowers only. then carryu the chamapgne into your favor boxes or bags. i would add a little more yellow cause brown and champagne will be kinda formal.

I thought about doing Light pink, hot pink, and dark chocolate brown, but it just seems so cliche. vida,
your color scheme is all things easy to put together, elegant, etc. i love this!! i think adding green florals to the mix would be outstanding!! it just makes everything pop! keep the cream and green in flowers, brown linen and cream napkins, with green and cream florals, add curly willow for a stunning touch to your florals. have bm in brown carrying cream bouquets with brown ribbon and you carry all green ( think hydrangeas or orchids) with flowing ribbon. have touches of gold here and there like plate chargers, favor boxes, white and gold cake, jewelry.

*Inspiration Board # 63: Chocolate Brown

*brown & green wedding colors

*jessica & steve, monarch beach CA

( to me this is one of the most beautiful weddings!! youcan also study it without the green to see what a brown gold and cream wedding looks like) i think the green blended in will flatter skintones and the centerpieces with branches( i think that is curly willow) is amazing.

Hi all,

I am getting married August 8, 2009 at a bed and breakfast inn. I am searching for colors for the wedding and a bridal bouquet that will honor my fiance’s late mother. sheree,
i dont know if you will like the color but grey is superb with these colors. so is black or brown. calla lilies would be real simple to add to the bouquet. what color were you leaning to here? i think keeping those in yellow or red would make the bouquet super lush. i have a pic i’ve used before. it has your colors and is well…in a word….. BREATHTAKING! : :faint:
*REAL WEDDING
the bm dresses look more pale sage or peridot but in another angle they appear grey. i just love this combo. you can have the girls in classy grey ( have them try on the shdes of grey to see which one enchances skintone) guys in charcoal or medium grey. i love the fact bm carry the yellow bouquets with the brides having the red mixed in. it will make your bouquet look sentimental. i wouldnt add the red thruout the decor; cause if you do it wont stand out and look like it has a significant meaning. :peaceout:

Deep Red, Dark Purple, and light peach
Dark Brown, deep red, and light peach
OR
Deep Red and light blue

Which combination or other colors would you add/ substitute with these? Thanks Guys!

Ashley,
All of your color combinations sound lovely. If you’re concerned about the colors looking “right” for the season (since August is still tecnically summer), I would not go with the dark brown and deep red. Those two colors together really evoke autumn (in my opinion). The other two color schemes I think would look great in August. But most of all go with whatever color scheme you like the most and don’t worry about the season.

ashlee, oh yeah! i wouldnt add alot of fall leaves and complete fall decor unless you are going with a full blown fall theme. depends really on where you get married. if you live where the maples turn during that time then yes, but you can check out what comes out at local farmers markets and pay attention to the trees. if you see that fall produce is available then yes add it! if you see tinges of fall in the leaves( just turning) then stick to waht mother nature is doing. there is a way even when the leaves are not turning completely and that is rustic elegance. it will look like it was “meant to be that way” dont let what i am saying scare or confuse you. its all about white christmas lights and branches, added greenery, raffia and to make it elegant use roses only in your shades. a foliage arch to marry under made of greenery and fall leaves barely turning. bridal party in brown. add sparkle with silver which will make it chic. asile decor with long vines and leaves tied with raffia or elegant ribbons for more oomph add cylinders of candles down the aisle with the pew markers. think brown linens with peach and red roses or urns of fresh foilage spilling over edges. add candlelight. tuck a single rose in each place setting napkin accompanied by your fave edible candy in simple silver metal favor baskets.

Hi everyone! I need some advice. I’m getting married August 8, 2009. The original color scheme was red, black, and white but now we’re having second thoughts. Option A is an indoor ceremony and reception and Option B is an outdoor ceremony and dancing, and inside dining. Blue is probably not an option, and I’d love to avoid pink. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Congratulations to all the future brides!

mel, have you decided whether its in or outdoors? is so, i would love to see the venue that way i can find some colors. green is a failproof color scheme. you can add it with anything. another is simple brown and cream. add green bouquets and it would be gorgeous. what are some of your fave colors and your fh? maybe we can find something there. i see that you like bold colors with the red and black. what are some other colors your considering? let me know, would love to help!!

Hi Natasha! My wedding is also August 8, 2009!!! It’s interesting you are asking about colors….not sure about those combinations. I guess I’d have never thought to put any of them with periwinkle. I was wondering what you guys thought for dark purple for my august wedding? I am also considering parasols for something different. The ceremony will be outdoors, likely at a golf course with mature trees. Do the parasols fit along sort of a garden theme? Let me know your thoughts.

penelope, parasols are the way to go for a garden theme!! and dark purple is too!! you could think about having a monochroamtic purple theme, different shades of purple from light to dark for contrast. that way you can take the stress off of having to match everything.

for flowers hydrangea stands out. dark purple hydrangeas set against, for instance, lavender dresses. wow!! and using these flowers (which are large it doesnt take many) you can carry white hydrangea with a shade of purple ribbon trailing down. plus it will give some lighter shade in there for a more garden feel. for lushness add lots of greenery and dont 4get the white in the flowers and linens. think of adding berries in the mix, this will add even more garden feel. (think about faux cause berries can stain) you can add those to fresh flowers and noone will know the difference!

like natasha, go to theknot.com for purple weddings. click under wedding photos and it will take you from there!! google image bridesmaid with parasols ( lots of pics) love it!! also google image purple wedding.

natasha, hi i thought white linens would look wonderful but what about periwinkle(google image periwinkle wedding). i am assuming bm will be in periwinkle. why pick just one color unless you wanted a 2 color scheme. i would choose 1 flower in 2 colors red and watermelon, set agaisnt the periwinkle what a stunner! the great thing about this scheme, is you can use just solid pops of red here and there like a red and white cake, a solid red bouquet 4 you.. everything doesnt have to be all watermelon and red. you also have shades of a lighter pink(in bouquet by cakeand in cake)in there which could be rose petal. hope this helps!! i think its amazing! you get the best of both worlds!!

kelley, dont worry about choosing!! have a simple champagne and green color scheme and add all other colors into flowers. this will keep it simple!! have a sherbet punch the accent ribbons for favors and paper (programs etc) should be mint green. let the flowers pop against it! also for the bridesmaids have same floral bouquets set against different colors (that they love) or put them in a simple green(try champagne and mint green, dont suit alot of skintones) or pink with colored sashes. pink will most likely suit your girls skintones! pick a light pink.one in sherbet orange, the other in mint green sash, and so on. have guys boutonnieres only matching each girls sash. i think to much tie and vest color will overdo it. put guys in simple beige suits, white shirts. seeting color on chamapgne linens would be beautiful. almost 4got, if putting girls in champagne wow the flowers will pop against this, just like the linens. now for a an unexpected twist, have a aqua blue and white cake, the colors surrounding this would be unreal!!

* Lime & Strawberry Wedding

* Green & Champagne Wedding

* Pink & Green Shower (Baby or Bridal)

* Spring Fling!

* A Preppy Pink and Green Wedding ( i love how they used the pink green etc. in the paper lanterns.and kept all else simple 2 color scheme)

heather,
i looked at everything and i think you should do the blue with green and yellow. pale yellow flowers surrounded by greenery against the blue. and do white linens blue napkins, centerpieces of yellow flowers with greenery. add the green by the greenery, a mixture of yellow and blue ribbon around napkins or programs, favors. i wouldnt do the plum though beautiful i would stick with the yellow more springtime. for this color. decorate everything mainly with the yellow flowers and greenery, arch etc. keep it soft like in pic i posted. love this blue by the way!!

* Board #43: Waterfront Wedding

keep the yellow soft.

hi anna, don’t worry you can have the dark colors you and your fiance love!! do you have colors that you lean to most? i am leaning toward the plum and brown! i just love this combo!! for more pics, google image purple wedding baord and purple and red wedding board (also can google search these without word board) i think this is a very fitting color!! especially for fall!! if you want more rustic, just add that in favors and branches in decor. if you dont like dark plum then go for an deep red wedding!! google image that too. dark colors fill my closet i love them!! i hope this helps! if it don’t let me know and i will serach more! oh yeah, you can make this color fit in your venue. what color is it by the way? the brown will go with everything. if it is say burgundy, this plum will work, can add a few burgundy flowers in the mix, to make it more tied in if you prefer. whatever the venue colors are you can always add that colro to plum and make it work, that is the great thing about plum its sooo neutral.

* Feeling Purple
* Royal Purple (this is my fave because it could fit in fall so easy, the fruit centerpieces)
* Stylish fall bride (omg!!, stunning!!)
* Brown & plum color palette

this wedding color scheme will be sooo pleasant it will get oohs and aahs, and be everything a wedding should be!!

Brittany, I don’t think you have to worry about the time of year making your colors look weird. Maybe if you were having the wedding outdoors in an actual pumpkin patch pink & green would look a bit off, but those are GREAT colors for the beach! And they’ll look great in all that bright light you get on the shore.

Check out pink and green beach wedding and I bet you will fall in love! :love2:

I have finally chosen my wedding colours. I am having really dark silver(pewter) , light silver, black and ivory. My bridesmaids are wearing the dark silver with a black ribbon tie on their dresses (sounds weird but looks amazing) with the grooms men wearing black suits with dark siver ties. I am in ivory and my partner will be in all black my flowers are fuscia, pale pink, and ivory. My venue will be silver and ivory I just think tat the colour family I have chosen is so elegant so my advice is go with what you love and create timeless elegance

Thanks and hope to hear from you soonest.

It’s very difficult to blend gold with any other colour because of its shimmering nature. You might want to have gold as the dominant colour and sprinkle some white just to tone it down a bit. Where will the wedding be? The setting also should be considered

I’m getting married in January 2009 and still can’t decide which color to choose for my wedding. Somebody told me that it should match the color with the season or month for that year. I live in a tropical country. Please help! Thanks . . .

I think green and orange or yellow and white should be good in the beautigul tropics. Try these colors by looking and fabrics of same color and mix and match to see what pleases you.Best wishes n God’s blessings in your marriage.

I was at a wedding this weekend - and the bridesmaid colors were “Pool Blue” and “Terra Cotta” - when I first heard about the colors I could not imagine how good it would look, to me it was blue and orange. But when I saw it - I thought “WOW” it looked beautiful! The bride incorporated cream color flowers with the above colors. Absolutely stunning!

I am getting married in Aug. 2009, and I am having a problem picking my colors. I am very happy to see I am not the only one with this problem. I was thinking cream and gold but I hate having colors everyone has. This is not my first wedding and I don’t want to do white, but I am having a problem deciding what dresses my bridesmaids should wear. I can’t image either of them in a gold dress. Should i add a color like red or brown? PLEASE HELP ME !!!

hi Didi - December is great time of year to marry.. deep warm tones are wonderful for winter weddings.. cream and green is wonderful but be careful with the color wine - Wine can have a purplish tone to it - you would be safer with a very deep red. I know you may think its too much of a Christmas combination.. but i would incorporate more cream tones and winter white with just accents of other colors! Good Luck on your “Happy Day”

Has anyone ever thought of choosing colors that really accentuate your personal colors? And is it narcassitic of me to do so?
I have long dark brown hair, hazel eyes, and tan skin. I was actually considering going with silver, vermilion red, and tarragon green to compliment my natural colors. Maybe it’s me being an art-major but I know that Red and Green are opposites, therefor they compliment each other and make the other stand out. So, hoping to bring the green out of my eyes I was hoping the red/green play on each other would work.

Just like if I were blond hair, blue eyed I might go with silver, yellow and blue, or silver and navy blue to bring out my naturals. Or red hair with freckles and pale skin I might do pale Orangy-red, pale yellow, and cream.

Tell me what you think!

Blue would be great for spring. I would suggest blue with green– not sage, but like beautiful, bright grass colored green. I have an image that I found on the knot just to show what I’m talking about.
Best of luck

I am looking to get married in May of ‘09…… and I have no idea what colors to use! My guy is all for blue… but I am not really seeing how that will work with the earthy type wedding I am trying to plan. I am not a bright, flashy type of person… I like the simple, earthy tones… but not sure how that will work with spring! I saw the comment below about Blue, Brown and Ivory… would that work for a spring wedding?

apple red, orange, yellow, and variations of those colors will give you a warm colored wedding. it would be like a great big flame of love haha. i think fire is sort of romantic in a way. you could use tiger lilies in your bouquets.

clover green with pink and peach flowers would be a beautiful combination! and it would definately give it that spring feeling.

Well, i’m a pro-pink or red! LOL!! I just don’t want to see red and cream flowers everywhere. The bridesmaid gowns would be apple if i go with red. However, now i’m thinking clover green dresses with peach and pink flowers!!Any suggestions. To be honest I’m not opposed to any colors, because i like a lot of combinations. My better half just doesn’t want purple as a main color. Help!!!!!!!!

miranda, try your apple red as an accent to a cream or ivory wedding gown. its my personal opinion that colors like that should be used as an accent and not really as a main color (although, brides maids dresses in this color with a cream/ivory sash would look adorable. sort of opposite of what you would be wearing.) and maybe pairing it with a blush type or pink would give it that feminine, romantic feeling, as well as a spring type feeling. i feel that softer colors like blush pink look more like spring colors, where as “harder” reds, pinks, and whatnot are more of a summer thing.

haha, just my opinion though.

im getting married in october 2009 and the colors ive picked (although not completely settled on) are not anywhere near autumn colors. im thinking that i want ivory, pool (a really pretty blue, almost but not quite like turquoise), and silver as my colors. of course with the standard black for tuxedos and whatnot. we’re getting married in the aquarium haha.

Hi Amber, you can DEFINITELY do pink & blue without it looking at all babyish … it can look extraordinary.

Obviously, pink & blue balloons and streamers … not so good … but if you add a grown-up theme you really start to have something. I looked around the web and found two striking ideas for the pink/blue palette, which is 1) Asian, 2) Marie Antoinette style.

So for the first, add lots of exotic orchids and hints of purple or teal green or gold to deepen the palette. See the endlessly useful Snippet & Ink (board: Japanese Magnolia) for an example.

Or for the royal Antoinette look, add silk fans, crystal, parasols, Belle Epoque style prints, lush florals. Again, see Snippet & Ink (Versailles Garden Party), Wedsmack: Reviving Versailles, and this post from Onewed forums.

Oh, and three more for you … check out Flavia’s Blush, Blue & Gold board at Elizabeth Anne Designs for a subtle Southern feel, the Alice in Wonderland board posted at Beach Bound Bride (scroll down to board #2), or Enchanted Florist at Faye & Greer.

I hope that gets you started … :P

Hi Yesi, lots of options here, but you don’t say what time of year you’re having it or what kind of feel you’re going for (evening/formal, daytime/casual).

Here’s a great red and yellow combination … very high-energy and exciting.

Try here for some great red & pink color ideas. Super-sweet, feminine look!

Red with patterned black and white (like damasks, paisleys) is a very hot, modern look, check our Black & White page for lots of takes on this.

A very crisp look I love for summer that is seeing a lot of play right now is white, green and red. Go here to see how fresh and crisp this can look, especially for an outdoor wedding.

One last idea that is great for a more ornate, winter-type wedding is red and gold, with textured gold brocade ribbon, fringe, etc., red velvets, and so on.

I hope that gets you started!

Lyndsey- I have seen some great weddings done with a light blue (almost Tiffany blue in some cases) with bright red accents. The color combination is incredibly fresh, not too overdone and would still allow you to use the rose red you would like. Nicely done accent pieces in the red would be beautiful.

I attend wedding and event planning conventions yearly, and the colors that were everywhere in January at the show were the colors mentioned above. There are tons of neutral browns, wheats, and golds with bright colored accents.

I feel the most important thing to consider when choosing your colors are the colors you feel you will still like when you look at your wedding album years from now. If lime green happens to be a fad, but you don’t like the color, don’t do it just because it is popular… choose colors that you tend to lean toward in your daily life.

Silver and lavender sounds beautiful. Lately alot of groomsmen have been opting for the dress shirt untucked with dress pants very summery. But they could wear their jackets for the ceremony and photos then shed their jackets at the reception. We have to suffer to be beautiful so why shouldn’t they.

My fiance are trying to pick our colors for our wedding. My favorite color is yellow and we were both born in May so Emerald is our birthstone. I wanted yellow and black to be our colors and have my brides maids wear black dresses with a yellow sash or work yellow into the dresses somehow, but I’m not a big fan of traditional bridesmaid dresses and a black dress could be worn over and over again. However, we just found out that we have to have a morning ceremony so I’m guessing black dresses won’t work. What do you think about yellow and green together?

:DHonestly Mindy if you like it then go for it, after all it is your wedding day. if it is done tastefully any colour scheme can look fantastic,But dont let any one else tell you what looks good you know what will work just dont let it look dated or multicoloured.
The secret to having a beautiful wedding is timelessness ( not knowing what decade you were married in by fashion trends) Take it from me I have planned so many weddings in the last five years that will be dated disasters in even 10 years Keep it sjmple you wont regret it :D>-

I must say that you should never follow fashion trends like chocolate with other bright colours or even have too many colours, keep it simple, because in 20 years when you look at you photos, and they will be so dated like the puffy sleaves of the 80’s. Just go with what you like not what is in fashion, or you will become fashion victims and you will hate looking at the photo’s[-(

Shawn McCalla: My wedding will be in April 2008. My colors are cornflower and clover (shade of green). They look beautiful together especially when matched with my diamond white dress. The guys will be wearing a light grey tux with white shirt and matching (clover/cornflower) vests. The groom will be in full white. I put the colors together on Davids Bridal site and it’s awesome.

Although it’s not going to be easy fabric wise they will have to be made. Is this idea old or should I just stick to a normal theme wedding eg. 1 or 2 different colours. I’m totally confused.

I would defently ask your maids. They are there to help you and give you ideas for your wedding. Hope this helps.

I am having my wedding next June and I am very girlie-girl, just on a tight budget. I am having the hardest time picking colors!!!! I know I want pink…I thought about blue, but won’t that look like a bubble-gum wedding? Then I thought Pink and Purple…that is too girlie for the guys! So what do I do…I need help! :-w

I am having a May wedding but I don’t like the Spring color suggestions. My dress is ivory and I was thinking of a wine color for the bridemaids dresses. Will this work for a Spring wedding.

We are having a May 2008 wedding and are having trouble picking colors. The ceremony will be on the beach with the guys in white button up shirts, khakis and no shoes… the reception is right now going to be outside in a country setting. We thought about Wine or Burgandy but a friend just used it. I would seriously love some ideas. My dress is pale pink or champagne ( I havent decided on the color, just the dress) and no shoes for me or my girls until the reception.

HELP needed please! I’m from the Caribbean, Trinidad to be exact. recently i fell in love with burnt orange and chocolate/coco brown for my wedding scheme. Usually these colors are not common to use in the Caribbean. Can anyone suggest ideas for the following: bridesmaid dresses, floral bouquet, reception decorating and favors. I will also appreciate any ideas as to what other colors can be matched with the brown. Any photos or advice please send them to my email address sa.cooper@yahoo.com

Orange doesn’t always have to be “pumpkin” orange. Think tangerine or the orange of a cremesicle if you want fresh colors. You could team it with other sherbet colors like a lime or a raspberry. Or if you want something more earthy, look at photos of old brick, desert rock formations, adobe colors like in Santa Fe, or a Hawaiian sunset. Look at the beautiful colors that surround those oranges, and choose your color palette from them. Nobody will think Halloween.

At first we were planning to have our wedding in December, and I was really excited because I really wanted red and ivory as wedding colors anyway (with a few touches of black maybe). But It’s been pushed back to june. Is it tacky to still do red and ivory? And what if someone stole my wedding colors and will be using them six months earlier?

Do you think its silly to have the bridesmaids wear all black with a variety of pastels for the flowers? I am having an August wedding and I think it would look sharp. Or should I just stick to one? Again, all black for the dresses, and the flowers would be a variety of pastels such as pink, baby blue, butter yellow, lilac, etc.

I am having a December 29th wedding. Right btw the holidays. I decided on truffle brown and Sky blue for my color scheme. My wedding is small and intimate and my 2 bridesmaids look wonderful in the brown hue. They plan on wearing the dresses again for a cruise they are going on the First of 2008.

I’m getting married in November, but didn’t want “Fall-FALL” colors.. I’m thinking a really rich, dark burgundy and a pale, bright yellow… I actually chose my colors from a cute pair of undies I have, which are the burgundy with pale yellow trim. I just can’t wear any of the yellow myself… I’m thinking an ivory dress with the burgundy trim.. does this sound pretty?

As a web/graphic designer on the side, I chose colors all the time. But when it comes to picking them for myself, I’m at a loss! I use Color Scheme Generator to come up with color schemes for clients. Click all the buttons to see what you get.

If you’re handy in Photoshop, take some pictures of your wedding venue, open them in Photoshop and use the eye dropper tool to pull a color scheme that will surely match your location. Or pull one color you really like from the photo and use the color scheme generator to see what others would go with it.

I am also having a rustic country july wedding. We are having the ceremony and reception at a barn.. I’m also doing green and yellow - but the shades have been hard to find. I can see the colors in my head! Kind of a sage and deep sunflower yellow and ivory with little pops of berry red and lavender.

Our wedding is going to be in July and we (myself and my fiance) would like to use yellow and green as our color scheme. Any suggestions on the shade of color? Advice please. I’ve been having a heard time trying to find a nice yellow color.
We live in Hawaii, so I actually was looking at the yellow orchid as the base of the yellow color. Also most of the wedding party would be rather on the brown tone skin, if that makes a difference.
Any advice, thanks

You forgot my one biggest peeve: season colors. Who says you should have a certain palette just because it’s spring (or fall/summer/winter, too for that matter). I think that’s just about the dumbest most irritating thing ever. I picked my colors — for a fall wedding — bc they were what I liked. They veered a bit toward traditional “fall colors” but not really. And I HATED that people thought I picked them bc it was fall. Ugh.

Hey HEATHER…I am having the same problem. I want a rustic looking wedding without the pastels. However, everything I pick seems to look to fall.

Heather: how about green in two different shades, dark and medium? Or blue, for that matter?

I am having a May wedding but I hate pastels. Our wedding theme is rustic. I want people to walk in and be transported back in time, like an old country wedding. I’m not very “girly”. I like western things and darker colors. And I have dark auburn/red hair, so I really do actually want something that will set my hair off, just because its color is actually very unique from any other red or auburn hair color I’ve seen. Choosing the colors for my wedding has been a nightmare. This website was mildly helpful, but I would like to see some suggestions for spring colors that would work with my hair color and my wedding theme. I saw a few suggestions here I liked, but I would like to see several more ideas.

Here’s another great tip for quickie inspiration: head to ColorSchemer.com and use their search tool to check out palettes designed around themes and keywords. If you’re having a beach wedding, try other words, too: “ocean” or “sea.”

Or if you’ve got any kind of theme in mind, try keywords like “sunset”, “summer”, “new mexico”, “newport”, “victorian”, “romantic”, “elegant”, “modern”, “trendy” … you’ll love what pops up. It’s an indispensible tool for those early planning stages.
