Want 10 New Centerpiece Ideas in the Next Five Minutes?

Coming up with ideas for centerpieces can be one of the roughest bits of wedding planning out there.

Of course, for a few lucky brides, it's not that hard — they just set the florist free with some thoughts about "mood" and a blank check. Others are happy to find their venue offers perfectly decent centerpieces as part of the evening's services. Neither of those brides are reading this.

Since you are, you're probably somewhere in between. And it's possibly up to you to at least design, if not actually produce, the cute things that'll unify the design and provide a focal point — or a talking point, even! — at every table. (And no, "what was she sniffing?" is not the type of talking point we'll leave your guests with, promise.)

At first, the task can seem overwhelming. But if you check out the centerpieces showing up at weddings across the country, you'll find there's a big trend toward keeping it simple that works in your favor. And it's easier than it looks to dream up dozens of great ideas.

How? Just mix and match, stealin... — ahem, borrowing — from popular building blocks you'll see everywhere. Just keep your overall look in mind (traditional? contemporary?) and you'll be sure to come out looking like you were born to style weddings.

What Fabulous Centerpieces Have in Common

Not all centerpieces have all these elements, of course. If you actually used them all at once you might have some sort of horrible gravitational accident ("Sorry about the black hole, honey. I'll work in the garage next time."). But most of them use a few. Just play along with our creative nomenclature, and you'll be off and running.

The Guts

The guts, the contents, the gear, the goods. This is them. Going for the most stately and traditional to aggressively modern, these is a list of popular, well ... stuff that brides build their centerpieces around.

  • pillar candles
  • floating tealights
  • candelabras
  • roses, gerbers, hydrangeas, callas
  • black magic roses, orchids
  • flowers plus interwoven bear grass
  • hypericum berries
  • flowered branches, curly twigs
  • green ranunculous, brown or green roses, green mums, gomphrenia, proteas
  • small citrus fruits wrapped in contrasting satin ribbons
  • ferns
  • large variegated leaves, curled into clear cylinders
  • wheat grass
  • medium gauge copper wire, curled and spiraled
  • tall curly willow or flowered branches pushing vertically above floral arrangements
  • peacock feathers (a collar for roses, hydrangeas)
  • white ostrich feathers (typically in Eiffel vases)
  • traditional white blooms dyed startling colors (acid green, aqua blue)
  • tropical exotic flowers, reeds, bamboo
  • lotus pods, artichokes, kale "roses"

The Guts, Thematic Version

We're going to take a brief detour here and list a few popular "thematic" centerpieces. Those are little more specialized, so we won't linger long.

  • candy bouquets (oversized lollipops, chocolate long-stemmed roses)
  • cookie towers
  • individual cakes
  • tiered favor box "cakes"
  • terra cotta pots, painted or natural
  • wine bottles
  • sand castles
  • flower-filled conch shells
  • pumpkins, gourds
  • galvanized pails, watering cans
  • birds nests, birdhouses

The Containers

Okay. Let's talk vessels and cylinders, fishbowls and boxes. These are a few of brides' favorite things when it comes to holding The Stuff.

  • bubble bowls ("fish bowls"), ivy bowls, hurricane lamps
  • footed pedestal bowls, urns
  • silver mint julep cups
  • eiffel (tower) or trumpet vases
  • mason jars
  • photo cubes
  • gift boxes, hat boxes
  • wooden crates
  • clear glass cylinders
  • square vases, square bowls
  • oversized martini or wine glasses

The Treatments

A rose is a rose is a rose, it's said. But wasn't a rose something else when you lopped off the heads of a dozen and sent the stems to your cheating ex in college? Of course it was.

How you treat Your Stuff says at least as much about your style as The Stuff itself. Here are some popular treatments, ranging from Princess Di-ish to Edie Sedgewick-y.

  • flowers, nosegays
  • flowers, wired to topiaries
  • flowers, pavéed
  • de-stemmed single flower heads floating in water: gerbers, roses, peonies
  • blooms arranged into pomanders or spheres
  • maple or oak leaves, roses, orchids, gerbers: submerged entirely in water (aka "drowning rose")
  • callas, bear grass, sword grass: submerged and twirled in bubble glass
  • roses, orchids, gerbers: submerged plus underwater lighting
  • vegetables (gourds, succulents): submerged

Killer Container Fillers

Of course, it isn't always enough to have fabulous flowers and Baccarat vases (or wheat grass and stainless steel). Sometimes we ladies just need an extra design element. Voila: pretty stuff that goes into the container. Hey, plain old water isn't always thrilling enough for events like this.

  • gel beads
  • vase gems, clear
  • vase gems, bright striking colors
  • vase gems with underwater lighting
  • cranberries, kumquats, cherries, frozen green peas (can take water)
  • coffee beans, candy corn, dried indian corn, popcorn, dried peas, lentils (keep dry)
  • colored water, underwater lighting
  • citrus fruit, arranged cut side out
  • block of floral foam wrapped in sword grass or hosta leaves (placed in square jars)

Snappy Container Wrappers

You've tossed in the callas, the vase gems, a magnificent beta fish for good measure — but something's still missing. What could it be?

Perhaps it's the snappy container wrapper. Because that bubble bowl can look a bit bare without a little something wrapped around it. Miniature "bowl lingerie" is hard to find, but satin ribbons are easy. Hurrah!

  • ivy
  • raffia
  • multilayered satin ribbons
  • berry sprays/garlands
  • bark strips
  • marabou feather boas
  • bear grass
  • bear grass threaded with crystals

modern centerpieces

The Underlayments

What a pretty word, eh? "Underlayments." Sounds like something that involves a lot of rivets, and maybe some naughty lace. But in this case, it's something that goes under your container to make it look even more fabulous. Yeah, like that's possible.

  • contrasting table runners
  • doilies
  • reflective mirror tiles
  • criss-crossed satin ribbons
  • hosta leaves
  • sheet moss
  • "stone" runners on webbed backing, cut into squares
  • bamboo rolling mats or soba trays

Surrounds

Contrary to popular belief, this is not the unfortunate transformation your fiancé wreaks on your living room before you even tie the knot. ("Your TV isn't wired for 5.1?? Don't worry, honey, I'll take care of that. Can you hand me that coat hanger?")

No, surrounds (at least in our minds) are those sophisticated little things you toss around your centerpieces to give them even more visual interest. Rose petals and vase gems are the most traditional. You can simply scatter them around your creations like little moons in loose orbits.

Or, if you're feeling a little more luxe, you can arrange your centerpieces in a soldierly little line all the way down the table, filling the spots between with heaps of petals or orchid heads. Or if you really want to cheer up your guests, you could always scatter gold coins.

  • vase gems
  • rose petals
  • round votive holders
  • beach glass
  • seashells
  • teacups (as votive holders)
  • loose dendrobium orchids
  • river stones
  • square votive holders
  • glass ornaments
  • miniature gourds (plain or hollowed to hold votive candles)
  • polished black river stones

And Now, Over to You

Looking for help coming up with a center piece idea. Our colors are navy and silver with a star theme running through everything. We rented a hall that really makes it a blank canvas as it has round table (white tableclothes, cream walls with wood wainscoating around the bottom, arched windows run along one wall of the room and a wood ceiling with cove lighting that runs the perimeter of the rooms. So were looking for something simple since the room has so much character to begin with. Flowers are going to be white roses and scottish thistles, but I would prefer to steer away from flowers.

Hello. My daughter’s christening is the end of Feb. I bought glass ivy bowls for the centerpieces. We are making chocolate cross lollipops with light pink and light purple accents. These will stick out of the bowl. I know I need styrofoam inside but do you have any ideas on how I can hide the styrofoam? I was wondering if crystal fibers would work but without water… I’m trying to stay away from water. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

    • staceyleah

      julie,
I have actually seen styrofoam painted and/or fake grass used. Especially the fake grass or colored moss. You can also use other fillers like glass rocks, crystals, etc. Google image lollipop centerpieces for pics and different fillers used.

my daughter is having weddding in july ’12..the dresses are purple and she trying to get an idea for the wedding table center pieces thanks

  5. Jessica

I have been racking my brain for centerpieces for my April 2012 Wedding. My colors are coral, mint green, and Ivory. The venue has large windows, rock fireplace, and lots of planted trees around. We are having large round tables with Ivory table linens. I originally wanted to stay away from flowers but haven’t completely ruled it out. I keep going back to river rocks and lantern style candle holders but feel that is overused and do not incorporate my colors. Any ideas to inspire me for creative ideas??

  6. Christy

i love the idea of underwater lighting…but somewhat confused on what it is…could someone explain…plus im stuck on creative centerpieces for my wedding colors are hot pink black and white black tablecloths, white chair covers, pink chair sashes, clear table ware and hot pink table runners.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Christy,
They are floralytes that you submerge in water to give a ethereal effect in centerpieces etc. They add a pop of color and a really amazing effect. More on them here:

Look at this, just using candles have a great effect as well…

Just buy cylinder vases from dollar tree website for a buck each and go to your local craft store and buy up ribbon and damask or other print and hot glue onto vases. Make up the table number cards from your computer. The damask in the pic looks like a flexible printed paper because it was used on the napkins too. Floating candles would really add to the effect, or any candle centerpiece… Example

You could do a smaller version of this, with the style you have chosen and clear plates. Candles and a submerged calla or other flower, floating candle, and votives would go really well…

I am getting married on May 27, 2012. My colors are eggplant, charcoal, white & small hints of black. I having trouble coming up with an centerpiece that is inexpensive yet creative. My caterer has a mix of tall/short vases and square/round mirrors that I can use but my trouble is what to fill them with. Any ideas?

  8. Kathi

Hi, Planning my daughter’s wedding for Oct. of 2012. Going a little crazy already trying to come up with elegant-looking centerpieces. Her colors are black, raspberry pink, and silver. Tables will probably have black table cloths, as well as black chair coverings with pink bows. Need silver incorporated into the centerpieces to brighten things up. Love the idea of underwater lighting but where do you find it? Help and thanks!

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Kathi,
You may like something like this…

It looks really nice and fiftyflowers.com has flowers by bulk. Also look at dollartree website for cylinder vases for a buck each, then try out a craft store or save on crafts site for silver glass stones. You don’t have to use callas, any flower she likes will work. Also look at silver chargers under the plates they would look fab with black linens.
      Here is another idea….

Using the “silverware” as the silver.

Save on crafts website also has floralytes you mentioned. ( google image floralytes centerpiece for loads of ideas)

  9. Cathy

Wow! This article is so incredibly helpful! I’ve been stuck on a few things but maybe you can help. I am interested in having two different centerpieces to mix up the table decor (alternating tables). Our theme is bright jewel tone colors with a glam 50s vibe mixed in – think amethyst, fuchsia, emerald, sapphire and ruby – and a big emphasis on the bling of the jewels. My dress is 1950s vintage so I was going to add lace and pearls throughout the decor too. The first centerpiece I’m trying to make is a medium sized clear hurricance glass with a pomander of rose heads; the glass has satin ribbon and flatback jewels glued on the bottom rings. My questions are: what should I do for a filler? Bright blue gems? River rocks? Large Diamond Confetti? Also I was thinking of add a collar of feathers at the bottom of the roses?
The other centerpiece for other tables as going to be much more simple – a floating tealight in a glass candy dish filled with pearls; surrounded by a scattering of flower petals, pearls and diamond confetti. I was thinking of adding 4 short votives wrapped in lace surrounding this second centerpiece or too much? What about adding the lace votives surrounding the first idea too? All the tables will be covered in white table cloths and two contrasting runners under the centerpieces. What do you think? Is it too much? Or just enough. I have a pic of the first centerpiece. Any ideas? Thanks!!

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Cathy,
Great concept and creativity! I would put either matching or clear jewels inside, so it won’t compete with the details on the vase and the florals. You could do a trial run with the feathers but I am thinking just add a few small ones in the flowers instead of a collar. For the other tables, I personally think it would be amazing to pull in the colors from your vases. For instance: pearls and multicolored gems in glass dish, surrounded by clear votives. But I am concerned about the candy dish looking “lost” among the other centerpieces. I think the lace votives will be to much for the look you are after. Do you have a venue link or pic? I could see what would work best. Look forward to hearing from you soon!

      • Cathy

Thanks so much for your input! You make a really good point about the candy dishes getting lost; I hadn’t thought about that. Especially since the height of the room is rather enormous! Would you suggest switching out the candy dishes for a taller vase? Or maybe just nix them altogether and do more of the floral centerpieces in alternating colors?

Thanks for the ideas on keeping the feathers minimal, also. Maybe I can intersperse the feathers with a few jeweled headpins too.(I got little white swan basins to fill with candies for the favors (pic attached of a similar black swan favor) and this was the main reason I was going to try and put feathers in the centerpieces; but another idea I had was to make rhinestone napkin rings with a single feather to pick that aspect up.)

I will definitely give it all a try to see how it works. Thanks again! Your advice has been so helpful!

Here’s some pix of the venue too to give you a better idea and let me know what you think. It’s the conservatory dining room within a large historic (colonial) inn. It definitely gives a feel of being an indoor garden. My wedding is in February though so it may be more of an indoor Winter Wonderland:)

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Cathy,
Nice venue. It already has alot of beautiful decor already so in this case less will be more. Consider the little feathers in the centerpieces, also by adding a few feathers to bouquets, even on the napkins like you mentioned. Keep it subtle so you won’t compete with the beauty of the room. My first color choice on feathers was black but if you don’t want to go with black subtle white will work. Also google image both feather wedding bouquets then feather wedding centerpieces to see ideas. Like here:

          or here:

Now one thing you could alternate is low feather centerpieces in cylinder vases. You could even add the jewels and ribbon like your other centerpieces. That would actually look nice. Look at the haute couture bouquet on this page to see the subtle black feather with flowers….

  10. Erica

    Hi,

I am trying to come up with the final colors we will be having at our wedding by basing them on the centerpieces we’ll be having. I like the centerpieces with the pink and ivory roses that have candles with them, and I also like the grapevines, or other dark vines wrapped up in a bowl with water, or around a candle, but I can’t seem to find anything that incorporates both ideas. Any ideas?

  11. Nicole

My friend is having a wedding at the end of October-her colors are Zebra and Sangria..we are having a hard time finding center pieces that are inexpensive….any ideas????

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Nicole,
      This would work….

You don’t have to use callas, although they would look amazing. Cylinder vases can be found at dollar tree website for a buck each. Any dollar store will have simple glass votive holders for cheap and white votive candles. Callas can be pricey but if you use them like in centerpieces, one per table in vase and I would add a few to the bouquets or all callas for bouquets.
If you coudl find black candleholders and use pillar candles that would look amazing as a centerpiece. Is there a place to rent wrought iron candleholders? Check them out, they may be budget friendly. Or black vases.I am not sure how your linens are set up but this would be a great look.

  12. Kelly

Hi, I want to do a fall themed wedding. I have no idea what I should do for a centerpieces. I can only send about 15.00 per centerpieces. The flower girl is going to throw maple leaves down the isle but thats all I have got. I want it to be elegant but fun. Do you have any suggestions. Thank you. THe bridemaids are wearing plum.

  13. Jacqueline

For anyone finding themselves without flowers the day of the wedding, here is what we did: Our 200 irises were dead (we did get a full refund), the weddings hours away. We had 20″ tall flared cylinder glass vases with blue and clear vase gems at the bottom all ready but no flowers. We drove to a store (Whole Foods in Wellington FL) and bought white calla lilies, 2 per vase, and 3 stems of white lilies (Easter Lilies) with several blossoms on each stem, per vase. That was it. The cost was about $20 per vase, and the centerpieces were beautiful and very elegant. We never would have thought that we could save the day so easily and elegantly. I would never again order centerpiece flowers online – too risky.

  14. drea

our wedding colors are white and gold, and our venu will not allow anything with gliter for the decor. I do not want to use real flowers because it seems like a waste of money to me, so we are using artificial flowers. my only problem is all the gold flowers have gliter on them (that i have found), i don’t know what to do about my reception centerpieces. any suggestions?

  15. Kristin

I am planning a wedding shower and the bride’s theme is twigs and feathers for the wedding. It will be a fall shower – any idea for centerpieces with twigs and feathers?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Kristin,
You coudl actually have birdnests with some feathers, eggs, and the nests for the twigs. Or you could have vases of feathers mixed with branches you buy from craft store. Like pheasant feathers and branhces look amazing. Dont worry about buying expensive branches you can look into something simple even natural colored ting ting. If you use this have alternate vases with ting ting( it curly qs up top) and vases of feathers. Have them sitting in vases of birdseed, acorns, etc. Sky is the limit. You could easily adapt birds into this theme as well or go more chic using simple cylinder vases to hold the items ( check out dollartree website for vases a buck each)

      Ideas….

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Kristin,
you could also use river rocks in bottom of cylinders. You could also have a feather motif on paper products like invites etc. Have twig centerpieces with the feather motif on programs or menus. Then have feather wreaths placed about.
        This is fantastic!

        • Glynda

Bare branches that are a little curly or have interesting shapes would be whimsical with feathers in wedding color glued to them instead of leaves. Stand them up in vases filled with pearls , marbles , stones, according to what the wedding is like. It could look rustic with natural feather colors and stones or elegant and fun for a shower with white or colored feathers and matching pearls or glass marbles.

        • Glynda

For a femine look , don’t discount feather boas. Twine them down table , across Bride’s chair. You can find these at $ stores too.

  16. Patti

    Hi,

My fiancee and I want a vintage feel to our wedding, 1950′s feel. Our colors are tiffany blue, pale yellow and chocolate brown. We want to do something for a centerpiece that is non floral and inexpensive. We’ve toyed with the idea of doilies under hatboxes wrapped in ribbon (our colors varying each table) with little love birds sitting on them with candles around it. Maybe you could help pull this together a little more for us. :? Starting to get a little confused lol We want vintage and pretty without being in your face about it. We also toyed with the idea of doilies with old pictures in different frames with candles around them and little crystals that are tiffany blue.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Patti,
I love the idea of picture frames with old pics. You coudl pull some family photos or even movie stars/singers of that time. Use brown frames, then put simple votives. Another thing you could do is find cake plates with stands and have boxes of wedding favors with trailing ribbon.

      * see this

Or cake centerpieces, I love these, so unique and nostalgic looking…

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Patti,
Okay I have to say the pic I posted is fab. Nothing says 1950s like pearls. I love the vase filled with pearls and water and a floating candle. You coudl have a ball checking out flea markets, thrift stores, etc. for old pearl strands. Craft stores would likely have bags of fake pearl beads and dollartree website has vases for a buck each. Save on crafts may have beads for the cheap. I am not sure how your venue is set up but a great retro decor would be tissue pom poms hanging from the ceiling in your colors, then all you need is candles on the tables with a sprinkling of rose petals or small cylinders with ribbon glued round the middle of vase and floating candles

        * like this

        * see this too

Even stands of cake pops for centerpieces would be fun. Look for stands at thrift shops or borrow them….

  17. Gquita

Ladies at my church having a Hat Luncheon the theme is “Hats of many Colors”, any ideas about tabletop decorations maybe using hat boxes.

  18. Jacqueline

Looking for the best way to use blue iris, preferably alone,in a tall glass vase as a centerpiece on a round banquet table that seats 10. I have thought of a cylinder 50cm high vase, with clear water gems, and about 20 irises per vase. Any better ideas? I am not sure how this will look but don’t have much time before I have to order the flowers and vases.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Jacqueline,
Blue iris has the quality to stand out with little or no other florals or embellishments. I think this flower would look best on its on, shining it all its simple elegant glory. Kinda like a vase full of daffodils, by themselves, they get admiration but pair them with other florals and they can get lost in the crowd.
      * check this out

This centerpiece may be simple but it has serious impact, look how the stems are arranged in the glass. If it were me, I would omit the marbles, and just look for amazing glass vases, add flowers, and voila. In this case less is more. Check out save on crafts and dollar tree websites for vases. Here is another way to do this, in a footed vase…

  19. Lorraine

Hi, I am planning a retirement party for my husband, the colors are brown (color of the Fl. Highway Patrol and green (his favorite). I can’t decide on the centerpiece. I am purchasing chocolate cars (his passion is classic cars). I don’t want it formal as it is a luncheon. Please help.

  20. nicole

We are hosting a 50th anniv’ for our parents (about 10 tables)and I was thinking yellow roses as centrepeices but wanted to do something creative/cheap with them or incorp’ more gold somehow – any ideas?
    Thanks so much!!!

    • Glynda

You could get all shapes and sizes of CLEAR floral vases at Goodwill or Thrift stores, even the dollar stores. Spray the insides with a gorgeous gold paint that is ok for glass. The vases could have multiple purposes such as holding the flowers or upsidedown , a tall candle holder. They could be painted different shades of gold , clustered together, wrapped with gold ribbon and a bow. God bless your parents, day.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Nicole,
Look to gold frames and have each table with a number or a photo of your parents thruout the years. Write on the programs or have a small card saying when or where it was. Small gold frames at a dollar store or dollar tree should run you only a buck each. Go to dollartree website they have vases and containers for a buck each. Then put a submerged yellow rose( or a yellow floating candle, can even use the containers and float yellow rose petals with a white floating candle) or other cheap flower in each one or use a glass bowl and float a yellow rose head. Find out what their fave flower is and use that as the yellow flower or just have gold picture frames with pics thru the years and have yellow napkins on white linens. Scatter yellow rose petals among frames.
      * see this

A huge trend now is mix and match vases from flea markets the ones that hold a single stem rose etc. and do a odd number ( for ex: 3 vases) in one grouping. It has a vintage look. You could also take cylinder vases and have sliced lemons in the wateror whole lemons in a bowl with gold frame.
      * check this out

Google image search: floating rose centerpiece then submerged flower wedding centerpiece also rose petal centerpiece. Oh yes, think of using small gold urns with yellow flowers, gold pic frame. Then on napkins consider gold tassels. You should also be able to get this pretty cheap. Also check out save on crafts website.
      Hoping this helps!

      • Glynda

Sorry, I did not think of this on my comment yesterday. Use scraps of lace fabric or lace medalions, already gold or spray painted gold, glued on the outside of clear vases. A candle inside would cast a pretty pattern.

  21. Karen

    Hi,

I would like to make floral centerpieces for a July bridal shower with a Tiffany jewelery box colour & theme. The bride loves peonies but they are out of season now. Any ideas?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Karen,
Have you thought about bunching up some white carnations? They are pretty inexpensive and look absolutely amazing tightly gathered.

      * see this too

White roses would work well. Try fiftyflowers website to get them at a good price. Another thing you coudl do is have the boxes with lids, axe the florals and add a white ribbon instead with a rhinestone band fixed around the boxes. Then lay a white rose on each placesetting.

  22. gigi

    Hi,
I need centerpiece ideas for a surprise birthday party that I am having for my husband. He is turning 30 and this is a tented event in a backyard. The color scheme is white and blue. THanks!
