There's reason behind the old saying, "fresh as a daisy."

Because when brides of all ages want to express the youthful side of love, nothing beats the daisy in all its guises: from the traditional Shasta, with its echoes of nostalgia and innocence, to the practically-punk Gerber and its contemporary colors.

Shasta Daisy Style

No other flower says "young love" like the Shasta daisy, with its cheery face and paper-white petals. Dear to blushing brides everywhere, the Shasta begs for sayings like, "he loves me, he loves me not — he loves me ... we tied the knot!"

Silhouettes and textures that suit the shasta to a 'tee': eyelet and cotton fabrics. And gowns with a retro-style bell skirt and slender waist, or chic tea-lengths, worn with a flyaway veil.

Reedy, youthful brides look gorgeous in a simple A-line or column style — especially against vibrant greens of a garden or park.

The Shasta also plays well with white organza bows and delicate pastels like lavender, mint green, or baby-chick yellow. They look lovely paired with pastel roses, and in hand-tied bouquets dressed up with pink or yellow satin wraps.

They're a bit fragile, though, so resort to silks for anything like a pomander ball, anything without a water source, or anything your flower girl might carry around.

Gerber Daisy Drama

Gerbers are the Vivienne Westwoods of the flower world. The brides who love them also love design, and modern shocks of color. The most popular palette for Gerber-lovers is probably bright pink and orange. A close second might be pink and green. For Autumn brides, fiery combinations of yellow, orange and red set the scene.

But brides are also designing around Gerbers' purples, peaches and sultry magentas. And let's not forget that Gerbers really pop against dark brown and black (both super-popular shades for bridesmaids' attire. Coincidence?)

All Dolled Up With Daisies

Here are some adorable things we've seen done with daisies:

Wheatgrass Trays

That rich explosion of green makes daisies look fabulous, whether they're white or fuchsia. Take note: the fragile stems need to be wired!

Floating Heads

Single Shasta flower heads floating in votives or shot glasses: adorable. Larger Gerber heads can sometimes fill a whole fishbowl: finish the look with a bright satin ribbon. Or toss these blooms en masse in fountains or pools.

Flashy Splashes

The brightest gerbers call for dramatic echoes elsewhere in your event. Dress your bridesmaids in bright dupioni sashes (salmon or tangerine, say). Swag the ceilings with shiny fabrics to match. Wrap each cake layer in bold, patterned ribbons. Rustle up tangerine parasols and saturated linens and chair covers. Serve a menu of signature drinks in each of your Gerber colors!

Ribbons on Ribbons

Pick a bright palette to match your favorite Gerber daisies, then wrap your vases and votive holders in several layers of ribbon of different widths. For example, layer a bright orange inch-wide satin ribbon over a corrugated two-inch-wide fuchsia ribbon.

Fruit and Flowers

Choose Gerbers of a citrusy hue, then fill your centerpiece containers with sliced lemons, limes or oranges in bright, coordinating colors.

Back to Basics

Just because you love all-white doesn't mean you have to pass on Gerbers: they come in bridal white, too. And with their oversized heads, they've got all the charm of Shastas, plus a fresh and modern spin.

Rustic Roots

Gerbers and Shastas alike can add rustic punch to any affair. Just combine them with a little raffia or twine, birds' nest bouquet collars, galvanized pails, or gingham and mason jars.

That is the best color combo! Thats what I am doing for my wedding! I picked Azuala Pink, Turquoise, and Chocolate Brown. I wanted all the colors included so the dresses will be either turquoise with brown accent and pink flowers, or brown with turquoise accents with pink flowers!!!!! There are lots of options! Have fun with it!!

I am doing a Breast Cancer awareness wedding and would love to hear any ideas about using pink gerbera daisies or anything else that may look nice.

Hi Sarah!

Your event is going to be great. Pour a cup of coffee, I have lots of thoughts, this was a lot of fun to think about!

OK, Brides did that Something Pink event for breast cancer, wrote it up in last Nov/December’s magazine. They did not say much about the party in there but did show some delicious pink wedding gowns. You can see those online here.

Now, for an actual Pink Ribbon theme wedding, check out Susan & Jeff’s wedding. A must-see.

Susan’s daughters (bridesmaids) wore beautiful white dresses with a pink floral motif. Susan, a beautiful halter-top pink evening gown in pale pink with pink embroidery. The men were in black, with black vests and pink ties (note - good choice. This keeps the guys from looking like pink bunnies when they throw off their jackets five minutes after pics.) She had lovely Pink Ribbon cookies and a pink champagne fountain.

OK, a few more ideas: serve pink drinks: pink champagne, rose or blush wines (oh yes there are GOOD ones these days), there is even a funky wine called Pink with very cute bottles. For non-drinkers serve pink lemonade in the iced tea jars or the chic Lorina sparkling lemonade in the glass bottles.

Use pink in surprising places: bright pink cake interior, pink shoes, even a pink gown. Pink carnations make amazing structures. They look so chic that way. You can put them under placecards like in the photo, or surround the cake stand for example.

You don’t have to go ONLY pink and white with this theme, but I feel brighter colors are better complements: like pale orange or green. Avoid choc brown or black so it won’t look at all mournful.

Check out Martha Stewart’s famous hanging tissue paper flowers, these look really great with gerber themes.
She gives you the full how-to. Would look smashing if you use white and different shades of pink.

Oh, and since this is a favors site I would be quite remiss if failing to mention our small but nice Pink Ribbon favor collection (10% of cost donated).

OK, take a look at the pics attached and see what you think! I hope this helps! Let me know!

PS, just ran across a reminder of Portia de Rossi’s BEAUTIFUL Zac Posen wedding gown (white satin halter, pale pink ballgown skirt) at Percy Events … had to post it!

I like the brides bouquet in this picture, what is the greenery used in this bouquet, and where can i buy it?

Dawn P. wrote

Fawn, that is bear grass, it is really popular for creating that modern-looking loop effect over a hand-tied bouquet. I’m not sure where you are, but here we have a grocery store called Wegmans which has very upscale floral section in every store and you can usually buy it there. Ask your grocery store florists.

If you don’t have something like that talk to a more specialized florist and see what they can do. A few blocks away from here there’s one who gets regular FTD deliveries and will order you just about anything for next day, maybe that’s an option. You can also order it online from the bulk flower sellers like FiftyFlowers. HTH! :D

Thanks…now does the bear grass automatically loop like that or do you have to loop it from the middle out and when I floral tape the boquet, i would put the grass to stay looped??

Dawn P. wrote

Fawn, there’s actually a video on YouTube that’s all about how to add bear grass to your bouquet. It shows what the grass looks like when you buy it, and how to shape it and tape it into place. Brief but good. Check this out:

Christine, red & brown (all shades) is such a hot combo, but it’s really so new that it’s tough to find pics. Maybe between us here we can come up with something for you, I’ll think about it!

Oh, check out Misti2k2’s Chocolate & Red wedding. Her brown is darker but she’s done a lot of research and you’ll probably get some inspiration there!

I’m so excited to find people planning as far in advance as I am! Everytime I go to a local store they look at me like I’m crazy because our wedding is almost a year away! (07-25-09) Our colors are hot pink and a “teal” color. I’ve already ordered lots of stuff, and found MANY websites I really like. I just received centerpiece vases from save-on-crafts.com and cb2.com, as well as gerbera daisy’s from save-on-crafts.com. I’ve ordered almost everything else, napkins, groomsman’s mugs, bubbles, and camera’s from theknot.com (they have sales all the time and when you catch ‘em it’s great deals.) For real flowers I found theflowerexchange.com. I did find bridesmaid dresses on therosedress.com that I loved, but ended up going through the local bridal shop here due to the deal she gave me if I got everything through here, and those are Mori Lee dresses, I’m getting them for my maids for $100.00. Also oriental trading has lots too. Now I am needing ideas on invitations! I’m thinking I’m going to do a DIY kit, has anyone found any cool ones? And what about bridesmaid gifts? I have no idea, they are all so different!

My wedding is in July, 2009 and my colors are an emerald green and white. I love the contrast and I am hoping to come up with a simple but classy centerpiece that will add to this. I am certainly working with a limited budget here, but I have access to square mirrors for the tables and up to 3 cylinder vases per table. Any ideas?? 8-|

I just had my Gerber Daisy wedding on August 23, and we used cylinder vases with square mirror tiles for our centerpieces. We purchased submersible L.E.D. lights and put them in the bottom of the cylinder vase, filled the vase with water, and then floated sheer ribbon in the vase. In each corner of the square mirror tile, we placed a votive candle that had thin satin ribbon tied in a bow on the glass votives. The thin satin ribbon matched the sheer floating ribbon in the cylinder vase.

Lori, suggest you search ebay for sheer table overlays or organza table overlays.

Wherever you find them, feel free to snap some lovely pics and list them here after if you want to resell!

Erin wrote

Savannah,

I don’t know how fancy you want to go but for my wedding next August I’m using sunflowers and burgundy gerber daisies. For my centerpieces I was going to use quart sized mason jars as vases a place a couple of flowers in them and then tie a coordinating ribbon around the neck. Then I was going to use pint sized jars as candle holders to place around the larger jars. You could do any combination of this. For me since my mom, grandmas and aunts all can the jars are free. But you could do something similar by getting all different vases and glasses at a dollar store for a low price. HTH!!!

Ok so I’m planning my wedding in May of 09 and our color theme is navy/marine blue and silver-with a star theme as well-night under the stars. Our wedding is inside a country church. We are looking at daisies but we don’t know what colors to go with. I’m not sold on the wild daisy. I like the geber daisies with a bright statement can I work with that? Can you help find the perfect color of daisies that go with marine blue bm dresses?

Thanks

We will be using these on 8-8-08 and will be selling them the next day. We will have 6 flower balls that have over 40 gerbers daisys and a flower girl ball and some type of centerpiece with more gerbers as well. We got these flowers at Hobby Lobby here in Michigan. I will post pictures when the wedding takes place, it’s outside at a Country Club.

Hi Catie,
You could always just take the petals off of daisies for the tossing. Or you could buy the silk daisies and cut them off for the tossing.

OR you could check out Balloons Galore, which has daisy “shaped” silk petals. which effectivly are little silk daisies in almost any color you could want. Check it out. :P
