A Fantasy Fairy Tale Wedding

Royalty and romance: aren't these at the heart of every union?

It's no wonder that the fairytale wedding — also known as "Happily Ever After" or "Dreams Do Come True," to name just two — never goes out of fashion.

Spotlight on the Princess Bride

Walking down the aisle to a fantasy wedding theme means that as this type of bride, you can go all out.

That might mean a voluminous ballgown from Lazaro or Mary's Bridal Princess Collection, complete with petticoat ... or a design modeled after a particularly beloved princess from Kirstie Kelly for Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings.

But even when the gown is an A-line with a sleeker silhouette, fairytale brides usually go for a substantial veil, floor-length or longer.

The, the hair's often a half or full updo, but formally styled, dripping with romantic ringlets. And the shoes? Never an afterthought, they're something deliciously feminine, strappy and sparkly (though you can even walk down the aisle in clear 'glass' slippers).

And if you want the full-out princess look, straight from the pages of an oversized storybook? Add opera-length gloves, a tiara and a sparkly rhinestone choker.

Dressing The Royal Retinue

Bridesmaids, as often as not, are wearing something with at least at a touch of pink! A string of pearls makes a treasured gift for each of your girls.

But what about the men? American grooms find it hard to look past the usual black tux, which fortunately looks stunning next to a princess bride. But a white tuxedo has a bit more fairytale flavor, and it's well worth considering.

After all, no man one wants to look like a fashion victim fresh from prom, but Calvin Klein and Jean Yves Formalwear offer some elegant choices that just might put to rest any Prince Charming's qualms about style faux pas.

The Honour Of Your Presence Is Requested ...

Just because you're having a fairytale wedding doesn't mean your invites need to sport castles, but they should be something special. Just choose an elegant, timeless font and style (letterpress is always a gorgeous option). Or go custom: you can never go wrong with beautiful ribbon to wrap up a made-just-for-you pocketfold design, with a few quality rhinestones placed by hand.

Setting the Scene

pink fairytale ballroom decor with balloons Like other fantasy weddings, the fairytale wedding starts with draping, and lots of it: draped walls, head tables, cake tables, sweetheart tables, you name it. Luxurious linens are the name of the game.

In addition, this theme pretty much determines where you'll hold the reception: a ballroom. (Unless, that is, you're lucky enough to be able to book an actual castle, or live near one of America's castle-style buildings.)

Fortunately, a good ballroom will do some of the decorating work for you: look for regal curtains, dramatic molding and sparkly chandeliers.

A fairytale wedding is not the place for humble, easy-to-talk across centerpieces. Here, you need the drama that only height and heft provide. Go for towering eiffel vases filled with dramatic fantasy foral arrangements, leggy topiaries, or tall clear cylinders wrapped in satin ribbon and filled with floating candles.

Other ingredients in your toolbox: lots of silver (candelabras, silver cake plateaus), plenty of pinks, classical symbols (swan or double-swan ice sculptures are perfect here), and pearl or rhinestone accents as brooches or bouquet ornaments.

Also: sparkling monogrammed cake toppers, whimsical "I DO" letters for the cake table, and buckets and buckets of rose petals. Plus, every princess bride needs a really cute card box, whether it be a magic pumpkin or a sassy hot-pink hat box. A giant Storybook guest book would be a cute touch, too.

Roses for a Rose

crystal fairytale cake topper Flowers for fairytale weddings tend to the traditional side.

Occasionally you'll see exotic orchids, but mostly what fairytale brides prefer (in bouquets, especially) are classical choices like roses, peonies and stephanotis. If carrying a hand-tied bouquet, she might have crystal bouquet picks, or choose the larger cascading style.

Plenty of flowers are key for pulling off the fairytale look, but don't overlook the important of candles for setting the mood. Keep them simple, but group large masses together for maximum effect. Floating candles in clear cylinders offer more of a visual punch than regular votives.

A Fashionable Entrance

Drama's essential to a fantasy wedding, so plot out your high points. Find a way to make a grand entrance at the ceremony or reception: a spiral staircase and spotlighting, page boys, or a trumpeter. Take the time to learn a romantic waltz with your Prince Charming and throw in a few stylistic surprises, so all eyes stay glued to you through your first dance.

Outfit your guests with beautiful paper cones they can use to shower you with rose petals as you leave the church (another popular choice is sparklers). Travel from church to reception venue via horse-drawn carriage ... or even pumpkin carriage, available in a few metro areas.

A Royal Repast

Fortunately for your guests, Cinderella food means elegant 'comfort food': cream sauces, poached mushrooms and wine. Consider Oysters Rockefeller, and a roast beef carving station. For a touch of the country squire, serve crispy roast duck or Cornish game hens, and plenty of champagne.

The Sweet Strains of Love

A bit of intimate floor music will really set the mood, so see about booking a harpist or string quartet, at least during the ceremony or dinner. Later on, ask the DJ to queue up a few songs from Disney's Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast soundtrack albums. Other soundtracks with tunes worth a spin: The Princess Bride, Shrek, Anna & The King, and Ever After: A Cinderella Story.

Wedding Inspiration Boards at Polyvore (scroll to last pic, “Cinderella Wedding”) love this!!

hi Barbara, a cinderella wedding doesnt have to cost a fortune. think greenery(fresh clipped and made into garlands since this would of been the norm for that time frame tied with elegant white bows, have guest table in a scroll with feather pen. use a old world calligraphy print. scatter a few jewels here and there on that table for effect, add crystals to everything. a wedding of light blue, silver and white is key. make sure ringbearer carries a velour navy blue pillow with gold tassels which can be made if you have a crafty someone in your family. go to second hand stores or department stores for the dress, rent guys black and white tuxes. and have nothing but roses. white of course. i have a website i will find for you will be back when i find it.

Hi everyone!!! I am getting married in May and you guessed it, we are having a Cinderella themed wedding. I am trying to make is as elegant as possinle. I have found most of the things I have been looking for. Our colors are white, silver and a very light lilac. Our aisle runner is white with the light lilac border and it is scripted with “And they lived Happily ever After” and the date. Our center peices are a giant champange flute filled with lighted crystals and a flower arrangement with our colors cascading over it, the lighted crystals create a bubbleing effect. We have a Cinderella and Prince Charming Unity Candle that lights up. Castle cake topper, and we are getting two Castle ice sculptures.
The only thing that is missing is our Cinderella carraige cake stand. If anyone has one for sale or knows of some one selling one please, please, please let me know. This would complete my Cinderella wedding wish!!!! Thank you so much -Stephanie-

Carol, if you haven’t found your carriage yet, email MaryAnn (she’s down the page). Her company offers carriages out of California, but she knows a lot of other companies across the country.

I have shipped items to Florida. I do custom work, price based on size and detail.

I need help!!!! My wedding is in March-April 2009. I want a fairytale wedding on a huge budget! My colors are silver and white. With black? But we both do not like pink or red for the flowers. So we need advice on that. The wedding is going to be outside at a park, weather permitting.

Jessica, one of my favorite fairytale color schemes is silver, white and blue. As in, soft powder blue. So classic Cinderella! Here are a few pics that show it off. Creamy-white roses, little touches of lavender in the flowers. Silver julep cups, silver chivari chairs, pale blue organza swags and overlays. Lots of white.

Okay, so you can’t do silver chivari chairs at a park, but tulle and organza swags look amazing against all that green, as pew bows, wedding arches, you name it. Hydrangeas come in a beautiful pale periwinkle and look fab with swags and the outdoors. This is basically a white wedding which looks smashing outdoors in summer. For silver you can use the galvanized pails, etc. Corner your local florists and see who will sell you lots and lots of rose petals at a good price. Use on tables, down the aisle, etc.

Anyway, so dreamy, check out the pics & see if you like!

You know, everyone always thinks pink with fairytale, or at least I did, but these pale blues/silvers are just unbeatable for setting the mood!

PS, I love your ideas up above, you have a real sense of “event” going on there.

Hi-if you really like the light blue & white colors for your wedding, I had a light blue and white Cinderella theme for my wedding in November 2007. The catering hall my wedding was at has pictures of my tables, cake, etc. posted on its website if you want to see them. The website is http://zerisinnchrisandis.com/photogallery.htm. Click on Series 1 and Series 2 (there are 4 series) and you will see our room before anyone sat down. They are the pics with the white chair covers with light blue bows. If you would like other suggestions, please feel free to contact me at lawnut@optonline.net. Shelley :D

I just got engaged in august at cinderella’s castle. I’ve always dreamed of a cinderella wedding. I love the colors baby blue, white, and silver. My bridesmaids will be in baby blue, with white that ties in the back. I am getting married July 26, 2009, and would like some pictures and some ideas on what to do.

jessica, when i saw this pic i just knew it was perfect!! i would add slight color (unless you just want to keep it blue, white and silver) to the bouquets. yours has the blue ribbon. and the bm have the pastel bouquet. i really hope you like the pics, if you need more help just post back!!

Diamante Pink Cake / Too Nice to Slice ( here is a beautiful cake i found)

the color dont have to be pink, you could go with white flowers with the palest colored centers, like yellow or apricot. or just use these in solid pale yellow or solid apricot. i think your wedding will be gorgeous!!

Hello I read all of your ideas.Thank you for your time.I have decided to go with silver, white, and baby blue for my colors. My bridesmaids are wearing black tea lenght dresses. My handsome prince is going to wear a black tux with long tails and a white shirt ,silver tie. My groomsmen are going to wear black traditional tuxs with silver ties. Unless I decide to go with baby blue ties. I have not went to the tux place yet to see the colors yet. I have only looked up the tux places online. Any way my flowers are going to be all white roses with baby blue ribbon around the bottom. My bmaids are going to have white roses with blue roses or maybe blue bonnets (being from Tx in ALL!). That is if we can find them!

I attended a wedding in which Cinderella was the theme. Instead of the traditional ringbearer, she had a little boy carrying a pillow with her shoe on it surrounded by flowers. As she came down the aisle, the groom, kneeled at the end of the aisle with the shoe. He placed it on her foot and then together they walked up the starirs to where the preacher awaited. It was very beautiful. On the programme, instea of saying brides maids, she called them ‘ladies in waiting’ The men were called “Royal Advisors). She also had the Cinderella carriage stand to hold the cake. After the cake was cut and handed out and the dancing began, the cake was taken away and guest then used the Carriage as a backdrop for pictures. Very nice

Hi! I am working on my programs. I wanted to know if anyone has advice on what to call everyone from the party. Parents of the bride and groom, grandparents, children of the bride and groom, matron of honor, best man, bridesmaids, groomsmen, jr bridesmaids and groomsmen, flower girl, ring bearer, and usher. I don’t know if theres anything specific. I figure bridesmaids and groomsmen can be princesses and princes, but I don’t know what to consider everyone else. Please e-mail me tua35849@temple.edu.

Our wedding was like a fairytale. A beautiful dream come true!! I was swept off my feet and I’m still floating around on cloud 9. When I woke up that morning the birds were singing, the sun shining & there was not one rain cloud in the sky. I knew in my heart that this would be a perfect day and it was! It was beyond anything I had imagined it to be. I feel so blessed to have married my best friend who is a true Prince Charming. From glass slippers on pillows to horse drawn carriages, sparkly pumpkins, twinkle lights and castles, this was “THE” Cinderella event of a lifetime. (For us anyway). I have never, ever, been to or have seen anything like it before!!

Our union was captured on stage at the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s Journal Theater at the Disney Center of Performing Arts. Our procession march was to beautiful Cinderella instrumentals. My new sister-in-law sang her little heart out for our vow & ring exchange and the lighting of the unity candles. She has the voice of an Angel and captivated the hearts of everyone. Our children & family were united as one in the most beautifully written ceremony script ever.

Our reception was held at the recently remodeled Desert Greens Golf Club in Albuquerque, NM. We had it decorated by an event design genius named Celine Wiseley. She carried out my every wish & vision to a tee an then some!!! The head table backdrop, candles and rose petals created such a magnificent focal point of the room. Our guests were dazzled and amazed on how we were able to carry out the theme throughout the property. There was something sparkly and sweet to look at everywhere you turned. The entire ceiling was decked out with hanging jeweled crystals, dripping mirror dangles, gorgeous flowing swags of pink & white fabric that cascaded across & down to our candy & cake tables. The pictures speak for themselves. I will be posting more as they come in. The dance floor was enormous!!!

The formal wedding party intro was announced by “Chaz Malibu” Albuquerque’s favorite morning show DJ formally of 95.1FM

We kicked off our event with a Viennese Waltz professionally choreographed by Cristel Pike of Enchanted Ballroom. This was to be our first dance as husband and wife. We incorporated selected members of our wedding party to join us in this fairytale rendition waltz to the song “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman” by Bryan Adams. I felt like Cinderella dancing at the Ball. I’m so proud & grateful for those in the wedding party who performed this intricate dance with us. We worked on this dance routine for months & we totally nailed it! I feel so fortunate to have had such a dedicated wedding party.

Each table had a name such as the Cinderella, the Glass Slipper, the Storybook Romance, etc. and every chair had the cutest silver sash on it. Our centerpieces consisted of alternating tall Eiffel Tower vases with whimsical floral designs & square glass bowls filled with liquid ice & a single pink open rose bud. Both were lit up from the inside. Come nightfall, the tables were all a glow with tons of votive candles surrounding the centerpieces. I must say that everybody’s skin looked so pretty under the candle light that evening. Romance was definitely in the air. Our guests all had the biggest smiles on their faces & couples looked so in love with each other. I have never seen anything like it!

The music itself was a class act! We had a dinner show performance by the legendary Freddy Chavez himself!!! This man has a killer set of pipes! He dedicated a song to us called Beautiful. It was so amazing! If you would like to hear this song by the original artist please visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GS9GH8XX3Ew . We had a blast dancing the night away. Our band was called “Reality”. They had everyone on the dance floor that night! Even people who don’t normally dance in public were up there! It was so awesome! There is nothing like a live band to get the party started! These guys were really GREAT!!! You have got to keep them in mind for your next event!

The garter toss was a riot! I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time. The outside patio was lit up as well. Everything looked so festive. Thanks to Celine and her decorating entourage.

The view of the golf course was breath taking. The grass never looked so green & lush. We looked up in awe at the evening sky. There were millions of twinkling stars up there. Everything felt especially magical and serene. We ended the night with a limo ride then it was off to our Bridal Suite. The room felt so welcoming after a long exciting day. It was so beautifully decorated too. Our wedding party did such a great job! As well as the Inn at Paradise staff. They took such good care of us. There were rose petals galore! Not to mention the double buckets of champagne, hand-dipped chocolate strawberries & candy and pink candles everywhere! We couldn’t find the matches to light the candles but hey who needed candles? The moonlight was just as romantic and it delicately captured all the right angles.

It was one amazing night. The perfect ending to our day & the perfect beginning of our Happily Ever After”¦”¦”¦

Here’s a few more fun balloon ideas. #1 is a Cinderella-theme canopy by Dapa Associates.
Two, an ornate quince-theme carriage by NY’s Bounce Arena Parties — those floral garlands are a really nice addition.
Three … definitely not Cinderella, but this under the sea setting, also by Bounce Arena Parties, shows what can happen when you’re working with some REALLY creative people! (How great for a little mermaid theme …)

Sometimes a really great way to add a BIG focal point to a fairytale wedding is a balloon carrriage, and sometimes these can be a cheaper option than some alternatives despite all the work they take. Check with your local balloon artists to see if they can do something for you. These cool balloon carriages were created by Balloons Milwaukee, Final Touch Balloons and PartySparkle (UK). I love the ostrich feather crowns at the top.
