Paint It Black: A Guide to Gothic Homemaking (and Weddings)

In this world of pastels and plaids, it’s so hard for Goths to find anything aesthetically appealing. With Voltaire’s Paint It Black, you can turn the unbearably mundane into the delightfully macabre with little more than a touch of creativity and a can of black spray paint.

With Voltaire’s Paint It Black (Weiser Books, October 2005), you can turn the unbearably mundane into the delightfully macabre with little more than a touch of creativity and a can of black spray paint.

Home decorating will never be the same. Close your curtains! Throw away your summery linens! Forget about those white eyelet pillow covers! And, for goodness sake, buy some black lights! Voltaire is here to help with your home decorating dilemmas, guide you through the hardware stores and decorating centers, and lay it all out on the line about which shade of black goes with which shade of black.

In this world of pastels and plaids, it’s so hard for Goths to find anything aesthetically appealing. Voltaire comes to the rescue with ideas on how to create your Gothic dream home with simple techniques and easily-found, affordable supplies.

Fully illustrated with photos showing the before, during, and after, you’ll learn how to:

* Make your own Gothic toys. It’s all about Barbie meets electrical tape.
* Transform your plain sketchbook into a skull-covered Book of the Dead that would make Lovecraft proud.
* Pimp your ride Dracula style.
* Plan your Goth wedding.
* Prepare a frightening 4-course meal.
* Turn your pad into a lair.

You know what to wear, what to listen to, you’ve adopted that swank Goth name, now it’s time to renovate your pad Goth-style. Voltaire’s Paint It Black, is your answer.

Voltaire is a prominent and prolific author, artist, and merchandising powerhouse in the alternative culture market. Following the success of What is Goth?, he jumped at the chance to follow it up with Paint It Black (hey, Goths don’t need much sleep). He lives in the ever-dismal New York City and has an extensive touring schedule. Check out his lair at www.voltaire.net.

    Hi Danielle, a few wedding suggestions for you, all discovered by the fabulous Offbeat Bride.

    Jessicka and Christian: check out their cool black and fuchsia wedding party, plus, the bride’s wearing a really gorgeous gown.

    Megan & Dave: I guess this is a little more rockabilly, but REALLY creative, poppy touches … the bride’s pink polka dot dress is iconic!

    Io’s Pink Peau de Soie and Black Lace Southern Gothic wedding - Io is a freakishly beautiful model who happened to design her own lovely pink & black dress. Also must see the bat cake. This is probably as close to elegant goth wedding perfection as you could ever imagine.

    I really think that #3 could keep anyone busy for ages, but if you need more inspiration, take a browse around Offbeat Bride’s goth weddings section — hope that helps!

    Try white wide ribbon. Find (online) a skull stamp, and stamp the ribbon all over. It’s so hard to find cool stuff like that. That’s what I would do!
