Daisy Theme Weddings

There's reason behind the old saying, "fresh as a daisy."

Because when brides of all ages want to express the youthful side of love, nothing beats the daisy in all its guises: from the traditional Shasta, with its echoes of nostalgia and innocence, to the practically-punk Gerber and its contemporary colors.

Shasta Daisy Style

coral daisies wedding wreath No other flower says "young love" like the Shasta daisy, with its cheery face and paper-white petals. Dear to blushing brides everywhere, the Shasta begs for sayings like, "he loves me, he loves me not — he loves me ... we tied the knot!"

Silhouettes and textures that suit the shasta to a 'tee': eyelet and cotton fabrics. And gowns with a retro-style bell skirt and slender waist, or chic tea-lengths, worn with a flyaway veil.

Reedy, youthful brides look gorgeous in a simple A-line or column style — especially against vibrant greens of a garden or park.

The Shasta also plays well with white organza bows and delicate pastels like lavender, mint green, or baby-chick yellow. They look lovely paired with pastel roses, and in hand-tied bouquets dressed up with pink or yellow satin wraps.

They're a bit fragile, though, so resort to silks for anything like a pomander ball, anything without a water source, or anything your flower girl might carry around.

Gerber Daisy Drama

Gerbers are the Vivienne Westwoods of the flower world. The brides who love them also love design, and modern shocks of color. The most popular palette for Gerber-lovers is probably bright pink and orange. A close second might be pink and green. For Autumn brides, fiery combinations of yellow, orange and red set the scene.

But brides are also designing around Gerbers' purples, peaches and sultry magentas. And let's not forget that Gerbers really pop against dark brown and black (both super-popular shades for bridesmaids' attire. Coincidence?)

All Dolled Up With Daisies

Here are some adorable things we've seen done with daisies: floating gerber daisies

Wheatgrass Trays

That rich explosion of green makes daisies look fabulous, whether they're white or fuchsia. Take note: the fragile stems need to be wired!

Floating Heads

Single Shasta flower heads floating in votives or shot glasses: adorable. Larger Gerber heads can sometimes fill a whole fishbowl: finish the look with a bright satin ribbon. Or toss these blooms en masse in fountains or pools.

Flashy Splashes

The brightest gerbers call for dramatic echoes elsewhere in your event. Dress your bridesmaids in bright dupioni sashes (salmon or tangerine, say). Swag the ceilings with shiny fabrics to match. Wrap each cake layer in bold, patterned ribbons. Rustle up tangerine parasols and saturated linens and chair covers. Serve a menu of signature drinks in each of your Gerber colors!

Ribbons on Ribbons

Pick a bright palette to match your favorite Gerber daisies, then wrap your vases and votive holders in several layers of ribbon of different widths. For example, layer a bright orange inch-wide satin ribbon over a corrugated two-inch-wide fuchsia ribbon.

Fruit and Flowers

Choose Gerbers of a citrusy hue, then fill your centerpiece containers with sliced lemons, limes or oranges in bright, coordinating colors.

Back to Basics

Just because you love all-white doesn't mean you have to pass on Gerbers: they come in bridal white, too. And with their oversized heads, they've got all the charm of Shastas, plus a fresh and modern spin.

Rustic Roots

Gerbers and Shastas alike can add rustic punch to any affair. Just combine them with a little raffia or twine, birds' nest bouquet collars, galvanized pails, or gingham and mason jars.

georgia girl,
i think by choosing all white or cream flowers with a little green like in pics will be easy and headache free. then you wont have to worry about matching colors. if you are using white linens have a brown runner with brown napkins, the green will be used in the centerpieces.
take a look at this real wedding:

I can’t decide on bm dress colors either pink (David’s Bridal- Watermelon) brown ( DB truffle) or a champagne. I do like the idea of different pink on pink bouquets. I just don’t won’t the brown to darken my spring wedding. I was thinking maybe doing more pink and then accent with brown here and there. but then I could do a lighter pink and go with sort of a khaki suit for the gm.

kelly,
i found these links i thought were beautiful… you can substitute the roses for pink and white hydrangeas while the girls carry gerbera daisies tied with brown ribbon.
*wedding ( this will show the girls in the pink with guys in the tan beautiful and light) i would have all greenery centerpieces to pull in springtime and axe using flowers on the table i LOVE the green in the pink and brown polka dot containers so spring like)
*gorgeous wedding ( OMG! this is B-eau-T-ful!!!)
*Our Spring Wedding
*Pink Bouquets and Dresses

this is how i would choose the color for the bm dress. if you have either brown or champagne have a darker suit for guys with champagne vests or ties. if you have the pink have the lighter suits. i personally am torn cause they all look great! if you want a more light hearted feel to the wedding put the girls in the pink/light suits guys. if you want more elegance put them in the brown or champagne ( check it on their skintone; champagne is tough to wear washing out most skintones) brown will probably be better to enhance. i am am worried about the truffle. i think that shade is gonna be tough, i cant tell if its a creamy brown? or a ruddy brown? if going with brown i would consider a rich chocolate.

kelly,
i went back and looked at the dress colors. you could meet in the middle with the latte( if it flatters skintones). this way you could do either the light suits or the dark on the guys. to me the color is like mixing the champagne with a little brown. it is a beautiful color. so is the mocha. just a thought.

Hi Kelly,
I would like to start off by saying that I’m an event planner, and we try to focus on classy not trashy. I know you want classy for your wedding. Well….I went to a wedding where Gerber Daisies were used, and it was a cute idea, except in terms of the decorations. The bride decided that she wanted all the decorations to be all different colored gerber daisies but with artificial flowers. she also wanted these bunches to be plastered EVERYWHERE we’re talking all the walls, all the surfaces that she could, she stuck these daisies of all colors around. It looked cheap and hideous! Now I have nothing against daisies, or going multicolored, except you should try to stick with about 2-3 colors in the same spectrum on the color wheel. This idea would have worked out okay even with the artificial flowers if she had stuck with just 2-3 colors. Instead she had hot pink, hot orange, bright yellow, and dark purple. Ewww. It still would have worked even then if she had placed all the colors with white, and left out the dark purple. But somehow it didn’t. I think what happened is that she stuck the orange and the purple together, and it totally clashed. It looked like Halloween. Okay for October, but not for early March. She also did not include any greenery in her floral arrangements. I do florals too, and I’ve found that the flowers tend to look cheap often times, if you don’t include a little green in them. (on the tables, or overarchways etc. )
Personally I would go with about 3 colors of the daisy that compliment each other. Such as the white, yellow and orange. Or yellow, orange, and pink. You could also go with light or hot pink, and white daisies, and the brown to accent with satin ribbons on the chairs, or napkins, or table signs. I would use the brown as an accent, and the white daisies and pink hydrangeas you picked as your main color splashes. You could also have your attendants wear chocolate brown and carry white daisies with the pink hydrangeas. I’ve seen several photos of that type online, and it’s really cute. You could also try having a chocolate frosted cake with pink hydrangeas and white daisies to top it off. Don’t try the brown tulle whatever you do-it does not come out looking cute. -Trust me on that one. Stick with satin ribbon if you want the brown color in there, and do pink or white tulle accents. I hope this helps you!

I also was planning on a May 2010 spring wedding with neon color gerber daisy’s, I have already talked to friends and have decided on just 3 colors now, one of them being green as you suggested. Well, now I have to postpone my wedding till August of 2010. I hope those colors will be ok. i really don’t want to change my colors (fuschia, lt. blue, cream and green as an accent color) just because of the month. I plan on silk for the decorations and real for the bouguets/corsages. I am wanting a somewhat simple deco of gerbers for the tables.

Hi Kelly -
I am also getting married May 2010 and am doing chocolate and pink. I am using DB Watermelon for my bm dresses and my moh is wearing DB truffle. My gm are going very casual with khakis, sandals, and truffle colored long-sleeved dress shirts un-tucked and my groom in a white shirt, khakis, and sandals. My gm are getting mini pink gerbs with some greenery for their lapel flowers. I am using different shades of pink gerbs and mini gerbs for my bouquets and nothing else. I am also using different shades of pink and some white faux gerbs for my centerpieces. I think part of making your wedding “Springy” is making it simple. My centerpieces are going to be 3 faux gerbs in different shades of pink and white in a tall cylinder vase with only a little water and some pink and brown glass shards. Each vase will also be sitting on a mat that I’m making using circular pieces of mirror all placed together like a puzzle. I don’t have any pictures of this, but I’ve seen it done using purple and red at another wedding and it looked amazing!!

Hi Jenni,
Don’t bother trying to dye silk flowers. That’s waaaayy too much work going there. Plus they usually look cheap and ugly in the end. I would just stick with white or pink flowers, and accent the ribbons and other little details with the seafoam green. For another touch Michaels Crafts stores carries seafoam colored petals in their bridal section for the aisle or for the table tops. The key to artificial flowers is in the amount and types of greenery you use. If the greenery looks realistic, then the rest of it will too. I’ve even used flowers from the Dollar store before and accented with the greenery, and they looked good. You should check out flower websites like Pro flowers, and FTD.com, and try to copy their arrangements for weddings. That’s how I’ve had mine turn out so good, because I use the same flowers and colors, and just match up the picture with the real thing online. It works every time.

Don’t put chenille in the Gerbera’s. Make sure they are well hydrated. You can wire them if you are nervous about them getting floppy.

miranda,
hi, google image gerbera daisy wedding then gerbera daisy wedding board. (also google search) go to theknot.com under wedding photos it will take you to wedding galleries. one is flowers;daisies. check it out. you can also look at different colors to see what appeals to you. now google image blue and green wedding board. hopw you find something!! i will tell you a beautiful combo for daisies and that is brown and hot pink or yellow. it looks soooo good!! you can add a bit of whimsy with polka dot invites, polka dot ribbon on favor bags, around the cake, bouquets. stripes work too! another color scheme is blue with hot pink gerberas. the sky is the limit. one more to google image is gerbera daisy theme wedding. switch it up to get different results.

White gerbera daisies next to blues and greens would look really pretty!! It’s funny that Stacey mentioned theknot.com because one of the pictures under gerbera daises is of some bridesmaids in a light blue w/ white gerbera daisies, and it looks REALLY pretty! If you want something with more color, you could go with a lighter pink or something. Just a thought :)

Kay,

I did a country western theme for my son’s reception. I used blue mason jars with raffle tied around them and used rhod. in them. You could use daisies or gerber daises with something green from the yard. Fern or a shrub. I used gavalnized tubes for ice and drinks. Baskets for food. I used bandannas for napkins. You can get them for $1 a dollar stores and I found some material and made some. I purchased some cheap denim material (look for denim tablecloths, etc that are cheap) and made squares about 36 x 36 and put them diagonly in the middle of a long 8 to 10 foot table that was covered with a white sheet. I used cowboy hats around and turned them up and placed a bowl in them and served out of them. Don’t use too many. If you are using certain colors, spray paint your galanized tubs whatever color you wish. Red is great! Remember that $1 can of spray paint with do wonders on thrift finds. Look for cheap saddle blanket finds. Throw them over a chair or bale of hay. Find an old milk can about two feet tall that old timers put their milk out to sell. Spray paint it and put tall flowers or sticks in it. When I used the bandana napkins, most people took them home with them as a favor.
