Daisy Theme Weddings

There's reason behind the old saying, "fresh as a daisy."

Because when brides of all ages want to express the youthful side of love, nothing beats the daisy in all its guises: from the traditional Shasta, with its echoes of nostalgia and innocence, to the practically-punk Gerber and its contemporary colors.

Shasta Daisy Style

coral daisies wedding wreath No other flower says "young love" like the Shasta daisy, with its cheery face and paper-white petals. Dear to blushing brides everywhere, the Shasta begs for sayings like, "he loves me, he loves me not — he loves me ... we tied the knot!"

Silhouettes and textures that suit the shasta to a 'tee': eyelet and cotton fabrics. And gowns with a retro-style bell skirt and slender waist, or chic tea-lengths, worn with a flyaway veil.

Reedy, youthful brides look gorgeous in a simple A-line or column style — especially against vibrant greens of a garden or park.

The Shasta also plays well with white organza bows and delicate pastels like lavender, mint green, or baby-chick yellow. They look lovely paired with pastel roses, and in hand-tied bouquets dressed up with pink or yellow satin wraps.

They're a bit fragile, though, so resort to silks for anything like a pomander ball, anything without a water source, or anything your flower girl might carry around.

Gerber Daisy Drama

Gerbers are the Vivienne Westwoods of the flower world. The brides who love them also love design, and modern shocks of color. The most popular palette for Gerber-lovers is probably bright pink and orange. A close second might be pink and green. For Autumn brides, fiery combinations of yellow, orange and red set the scene.

But brides are also designing around Gerbers' purples, peaches and sultry magentas. And let's not forget that Gerbers really pop against dark brown and black (both super-popular shades for bridesmaids' attire. Coincidence?)

All Dolled Up With Daisies

Here are some adorable things we've seen done with daisies: floating gerber daisies

Wheatgrass Trays

That rich explosion of green makes daisies look fabulous, whether they're white or fuchsia. Take note: the fragile stems need to be wired!

Floating Heads

Single Shasta flower heads floating in votives or shot glasses: adorable. Larger Gerber heads can sometimes fill a whole fishbowl: finish the look with a bright satin ribbon. Or toss these blooms en masse in fountains or pools.

Flashy Splashes

The brightest gerbers call for dramatic echoes elsewhere in your event. Dress your bridesmaids in bright dupioni sashes (salmon or tangerine, say). Swag the ceilings with shiny fabrics to match. Wrap each cake layer in bold, patterned ribbons. Rustle up tangerine parasols and saturated linens and chair covers. Serve a menu of signature drinks in each of your Gerber colors!

Ribbons on Ribbons

Pick a bright palette to match your favorite Gerber daisies, then wrap your vases and votive holders in several layers of ribbon of different widths. For example, layer a bright orange inch-wide satin ribbon over a corrugated two-inch-wide fuchsia ribbon.

Fruit and Flowers

Choose Gerbers of a citrusy hue, then fill your centerpiece containers with sliced lemons, limes or oranges in bright, coordinating colors.

Back to Basics

Just because you love all-white doesn't mean you have to pass on Gerbers: they come in bridal white, too. And with their oversized heads, they've got all the charm of Shastas, plus a fresh and modern spin.

Rustic Roots

Gerbers and Shastas alike can add rustic punch to any affair. Just combine them with a little raffia or twine, birds' nest bouquet collars, galvanized pails, or gingham and mason jars.

Hi Raelene, Brittant, some food for thought …

This really shows some possibilities. I’m actually drawn to the all-white bouquet against the clover. But what I love most here, surprisingly, is the jade roses against those gowns in the middle row with the pink ribbon detail. Now, gerbers don’t come in jade but if you mixed some jade roses with white gerbers it could look spectacular, a bit different.

Some other great ideas here: bright orange plus fuchsia (perfect for gerbers), deep pink plus pastel pink, pale pink plus pale yellow and cream as shown in the calla bouquets, pinks with a touch of coral as shown in the last gown with the chocolate sash. What do you think? Anything grab you?

Hello,
My bridesmaids are wearing green (clover) dresses, and I’m wondering what color of gerber daisies to go with. I have thought of hot pink, yellow and ivory, or just hot pink and ivory (I am carrying ivory daisies).
What do you recommend?

FloralVerde has exquisitely complete instructions on how to make your own beautiful gerber/wheatgrass centerpieces, like this one. Highly recommended! She covers every possible step to make sure they’ll look great.

Hi all, My wedding in May 24th and I am having a problem with my flowers! I have choosen to go with the Gerber Daisy because I love them and it will still be spring! My issue however is that my wedding colors are Champagne, Black and Ivory! My dress is Ivory with a Champagne sash and my girls are wearing Black Tea Length dresses. I was going to use white Gerber’s and hand tie them with Black or Champagne ribbon but I dont think the flowers will stand out enough…. Any ideas or suggestions?

This is for Sarah Jo - Our daughter is getting married July 5, 2008 and she is using Pink and Orange Gerber Daisies with Alstroemeria. It comes in about 80 colors (literally) and is very inexpensive = $2.00 per stem with 5 -6 blooms per stem. You could use either white or cream colored alstromeria for more depth. Good Luck!

Hi,
I am getting married in July, and my colors are brown and champagne. I have used bits of gold in my dress and table decorating. The bridesmaids are wearing champagne dresses with chocolate sashes and the maids of honour are wearing chocolate dresses with champagne sashes. The groomsmen are wearing chocolate suits with champagne ties. I’m having a bit of a problem deciding what color paper would be best for my programmes.

Ashley, I love your colors…if I was getting married in the summer/fall I would totally pop some brown in there. I think you probably could overdo it and it may look tacky, but with the right touches of sage..it could be really classy and elegant..I would just focus on the sage for maybe ribbon on the centerpieces/bouquets/decor. Nothing on the bridesmaids. Just my opinion good luck and congrats!

So, I am getting married in September and I love the idea of pink and brown together. I also love Gerber daisies but, I also wanted to include a sage green color but I’m not sure if this is a horrible combination. I have not seen many pictures with green, pink, and brown put together. I would really appreciate any input! Thanks!!

Hey guys, I am getting married at the end of this month..yay!! I have wrote on here before, but wanted to answer some questions any of you may be having. I am doing hot pink and a citrus green as my colors with hot pink gerbera daisies and limes for the centerpieces..very funky and sheek. I have stayed under $8,000 for my entire wedding except the honeymoon….and have done so much myself and planned for the past year and a half..I am only 22 but I really feel that I found my niche.

As far as the photographer is concerned, I had a hard time finding one..however, I found one on myspace actually that was in my budget and exactly what I was looking for. So good luck!

Hi everyone! I am getting married next month and have pretty much everything complete. I ordered a small sample of what I wanted my boquet to look like—just so I would be sure I absolutely loved it on the big day! Its all gerbers in hot pink, a lighter pink and orange with a hot pink wrap. It looked great but I think it was missing something. Does anyone have any ideas as to what else would look good along with the gerbers? Different flowers, some filler maybe? I need some help!! Thanks!!

elizabeth,

yay for pink and orange!! those are my colors(plus brown) for my wedding in october. it is overwelming so just get started asap and book things as soon as you can. it doesnt hurt to be ahead. i had my location, caterer, photographer, dress, dj, invitations and save the dates booked and ordered in 2 months. no i dont have as much to stress about later :D
i was very picky about choosing my photographer. it depends on how important your photography is to you and how much you want to spend. photography was on the top of my list as most important so i didnt mind spending more money in that area to get a good photographer.i have some photography background so i choose based on picture quality and style as well as a recomendation. i suggest you ask around and if you have someone in mind, ask if they have references you can talk to. narrow it down to 3 or 4 photographers and meet with all of them….you may click with one right away or you may be able to cross them off immediately. make sure you find exactly what you want in a photographer and the package you want. photography is something you can not replace or re do so make sure its something you are very happy with :D let me know if you have any other questions on pink and orange ideas. here is the website for my photographer…just to get an idea.

happy planning!!

Thanks Dawn!
The pictures are fabulous. You are a great help! DB has the tropic dresses paired with yellow and white which does make a great combo.
Thank You!

Hi Heather, welcome!

OK, the colors. Gerbers come in white to cream, pink to burgundy, red, orange, yellow, peach … Here’s some great photos of gerber colors from FiftyFlowers, a site that sells them in bulk. I have no affiliation with them, but they really seem to know their stuff from their blog and are worth checking out.

As for cost, if you buy to arrange them yourself you will find them from about $1 a stem (supermarket flowers) to $2-$3 a stem (better quality growers’ flowers). No one can estimate the cost from a florist. It depends totally on the florist, the season, your region, how competitive the florist is in the market.

Now for aqua or DB’s “tropic” … an easy way to cheat is to look at the flowers that David’s Bridal chose for the photo’s bouquets! Not that you can’t make up your own combos, but the ones they chose to show off the dress are a great place to start.

So, take a look at DB’s “tropic” next to gerbers in the blushing white, yellow and pink tones they picked for the model’s calla bouquet.

And then, see that Cornflower jr. bridesmaid gown paired with that gorgeous coral/fuchsia dress, and some gerbers to match. Looks great doesn’t it?

Hope that gets you started!
