Dreaming of a Dazzling Green Theme Wedding

When you hear people talking about the color green and its "energy," you hear things like groundedness, growth, connection to the earth. And none of those things are wrong.

But in weddings, green's got a feel all its own, and that feel is fresh, slightly preppy, and above all, modern.

If you're reading this, you've probably found yourself smitten with that look that's unique to the green flower families.

For example: green-tipped hydrangeas and chrysanthemum buttons, green hypericum berries and chartreuse roses, even green anthuriums and callas: they look amazing, and leave you wanting more.

Green Weddings -1

Pink and green's a winning combination that grabs many brides right out of the gate. They're nearly opposites on the color wheel, which makes them deeply satisfying together.

And combined, they have a signature freshness that makes them equally at home in the fun-loving West Coast, deep Deco Miami, or the super-saturated Caribbean.

Green Weddings - 2

And perhaps even more so than all of the above? The preppy East. Especially when in a garden or a great airy tent near the beach, the East Coast wedding seems to be home base for this beguiling combination. Green and pink says "daytime," "cocktail length bridesmaids gowns," and an absolutely charming sense of understated fun.

Green Weddings - 3

Of course, brides have a wealth of choices beyond pink when it comes time to partner up green.

Purple, for example, injects a subtle sense of mystery. So does dialing back from lime green to a more Mediterranean olive. And once you've gone with olive, that invites some super-sophisticated pairings, such as bronze or copper.

Equally beautiful is any shade of green that's paired with some beautifully patterned black and white ... say, a monochromatic damask or toile design.

Green Weddings - 4

And deep chocolate brown makes another gorgeous showcase for green. Its groundedness takes the green theme well into fall, and — if you want it to — more formal territories. Plus, this combo's easier to adapt to indoor evening affairs.

Sage green, olive green, apple green, sour apple, lime green, hunter, chartreuse ...

... which distinctly gorgeous shade of green are you going with?

Hello,

I am getting married in September of 2010. I would really like my bridesmaids to wear short kelly green dresses with white/green bouquets and I would like to carry Fuschia colored bouquet. Now, I am also trying to come up with a theme and a third colore to tie it all together, but having a tough time. Our ceremony will be outside in a garden and then the reception will be indoors. I was thinking of maybe incorporating the garden theme indoors for the reception. Also, I know that Kelly Green is very bright, which is why I need a neutral third color, any suggestions?

Thank you - Lily

Lily, Hi,
i love the idea of carrying the garden theme indoors. you could use champagne, taupe, or ivory. i think the champagne or taupe would look fantastic especially with the kelly green.
* ideas

isnt it fabulous!! see the flowers have bright green foilage. it would tie the kelly green in very nicely. it would be easy and fun to have kelly green table linens and have an oversized champagne topper ( so just a peek of kelly green or even fuschia would shine through) use centerpieces of green, white and fuschia and it would pick up on the green from underneath in the foilage. another thing you could do for the centerpieces is add floating green apples in cylinders topped with flowers.

* more visuals
* okay, this is fun and refreshing…just fantastic!!
* i think i might have found ya something….the linens are white but more fuschia/hot pink was brought in… still pulling in your green into the room, just toned down like ya wanted. so instead of adding another color you could just use the fuschia to be the “neutralizer” and use the green more in the centerpieces

Ok so I just found this website and I need some help from all. Ive always loved sunflowers so thats what I want to use as the main flowers in my wedding april 24 2010. Here is the question my fiance thinks that sage green dresses and vest would look good only thing is the church carpet and seats are a dark green will that clash? I like a the berry color dresses that davids bridal has or either a yellow I need some help I dont really want to mix alot of differant flowers, any help would be nice. :?

amy,
actually pairing sage green with this would work. it would be monochromatic ( shades of one color ranging from light to dark). also the leaves will be darker in the bouquets that will also bring in deeper green and give balance. the only thing that i would find out to confirm my color is having the bm try on the sage. some skintones have a difficult time wearing this color. it tends to wash out and the bridal party wont feel confident and it wont look good in pictures. i am a pale olive skintone and i cant wear sage at all. it makes me look very unhealthy. yellow does my skintone that same. i would go to a bridal store and try on different colors. you are in luck cause most everything goes perfect with green. if you are going with something simple and very pleasing to the eye, you might find berry and the sunflowers may not look as well as the green or the yellow.

Hi, my fiance and I will be getting married in October of this year and we are trying to keep are buget the lowest we can! I am doing all the color cordinating and I need some help! I my bridesmaids will be wearing a clover (green) color and grooms men chocolate brown tuxs. The hall we rented for our receptions is all hard wood walls and floors. I feel that if I pick a chocolate brown for my linens it will really darken the room and if I choose clover it may be a little bright. What about ivory? My center pieces will be a plain vases with white gladiolus. Im so confuse and frustrated on what to choose for the linens. Thanks in advance!

Damaris,
you could choose mocha, cream, white, or champagne. but to keep it in simple and the budget low, white can be the least expensive. i would talk to the rental store about the linens to see if there is any price difference. if not, then you could go with any of the colors above and btw, i LOVE your centerpieces.
oh yeah, you couls also have the white or lighter linen and have runners in mocha or even brown. it would be a mix not being to dark.

(it would look a lot like the last pic on this site, isnt it absolutely breathtaking!) i saved this pic cause i think it is sooo pretty, and simply done, which stands out even more. mocha runners, and brown napkins, on white linens. beautiful! consider adding inexpensive white twinkle lights too. it makes it magical.

Hi there,

My Husband and I married in on May 30th this year and we used green as the main colour for our wedding. We had teal for the bridesmaids and this is where the green came from, we mixed this with white to keep it really clean and simple, although I did have some pale purple sweet peas in bouquet.

We use very dark green and very crisp white to make a contrast.

cynthia,
first start with the taupe linens and sage overlays or runners or just sage linens with taupe napkins, the green and taupe backdrop will be perfect to pull in shades of purple and green centerpieces ( i would use purples and green hydrangea with roses optional) you will have a table that is pulled together and elegant. if you let me know the style of your wedding or waht the venue looks like i canhelp more if youlike!! :D

what are the colors you like/dislike? you could have a shades of green wedding which would be beautiful. another color is a shade of purple. google image purple and green wedding then green wedding board.
are you wanting a winter theme or will it be cold there? i do love the peach in the picture. blue and green would work(google image blue and green wedding board) i google imaged brown and green wedding board (love this!!) with creamy white flowers and peachy centers would set this room alive in a romantic way with lots of candlelight!!
there are MANY colors that would work in this room, depends on the mood your trying to set. go to theknot.com click wedding photos and it will bring you to a color gallery. see what pops out. you can even do a mix of colors (you and your fh faves along with colors sentimental to you). looking forward to your post.

We’re planning an intimate lunch for 70.

It’s going to be Feb. 6 (it may be cold, may not be… I’m in Texas so we never know) so a winter theme is what I’m thinking. I don’t care for light pastels. With the muted wall color, I want a punch of color.

I like the idea of flowering plants for centerpieces (possibly azaleas or hibiscus).

layla,
love the idea of flowering plants. i would check the availability of these as azaleas. i live in louisiana and our weather being so crazy, you never know what will be in season!! lol. beautiful venue btw. you know i think fuschia or a deep pink would be gorgeous against this backdrop. or maybe a tangerine or dreamsicle orange. gogole image green and orange wedding. but personally i think the hot pink azalea color will punch it up. however it may not keep it with the intimate look your after, oh wow!! i think i found something!! heh what about using coral? its punchy and elegant at the same time!! wow this would make the room look amazing!! i just looked at coral azaleas and they are gorgeous!! this color is like pink it will give a happy glow to skintones and the room. yet will suit february really nice!!

*Jessica & Danny’s Inspiration Board

*A Real Wedding

*Real Wedding: A Colorful Desert Wedding ( this is pretty and its a bold color winter wedding!!) azaleas or hibiscus in tangerine would be gorgeous!! i just think this would look soooo good against the muted walls. tangerine might be easier to find.

Krystin, there is nothing more beautiful than a green and white or ivory/champagne wedding. and these are the colors i would keep without adding an ounce of 3rd flower color, unless you use creamy white flowers that have a very slight blush to them or a pale yellow. tie off the wedding bouquets in a deeper shade of mocha-ish champagne. you can have girls in champagne or hunter green, both would look great with the lighter green florals, as im champagne and green wedding board.

put flower girl in champagne dress with hunter green or mocha sash.

i would use champagne as my primary color in the reception hall. as in pic. tie in hunter green in simple touches ( favor bags, etc.) consider deep, clear green for centerpiece containers or green wine goblets)

Its is actually going to be in a room called the Dolphin room at the Texas State Aquarium. Its a room where one whole wall is glass and you can see the dolphins right up to the glass. Its going to be causual but not like flips flops and shorts. I want cupcakes instead of a traditional wedding cake and I will have like shrimp and chicken pasta for the food. I want it to be very intimate thats why I am only having the 50 people.

erin, wow this is gonna be so fab!! i just looked at the website, (WOW!) i love this!!heh i live in louisiana, can i crash the party!! no i am just joking!!  i wish i could see this!! post pics after!

okay, seriously, i agree with the way you are going with this. i would go with orchids, hydrangeas or a tropical flower, with green amaranthus.( i would use this for sure because it will give a ocean feel to your flowers,)

here is an idea: consider white or beige linens, have small square vases fill with blue food dyed water(in the indianapolis colts blue) and floating candle. i would count each place setting and put a floating candle(out of the way so it cant be knocked over) in center have centerpieces of green and white flowers, you can keep these as low or high as you want. keep this simple. thin about adding simple seashells in your centerpiece, just a few though. or as placecards set in a box of sand. not so much ocean theme, just enough.

i think the centerpiece pic with the branches etc is very nice. it would set this room off, but not to much in the centerpieces cause the aquarium should make an impact. if orchids or hydrangeas is too pricey, then think of a flower you think you would see at the ocean. roses fit, but many websites, i have read roses are not really ocean like. its more orchids, greenery(which you will need to use), lilies, bougainvillea, etc. if the table linens are blue just keep the decor the same. the blue tined water will be gorgeous against them!! here is a link that shows the tinted water and submerged orchids(this would work too, not with the dyed water though)

*Centerpiece Idea 1: Change the container shape

elizabeth, first i want to ask you some questions.

What color is your venue?
What is your theme, if any?
What is your wedding formality?
What colors are in your home and closet? Most of these colors are already a part of what you are drawn too.
What is your fave color? His?
Are there any colors that have special meaning to you and/or your fh, that you would like to incorporate?
What are colors you and/or your fh dislike, that is not an option?

These questions should help you narrow down some colors. When you have a chance, look at these questions and see what you come up with. Usually you already know what you love or at least drawn too. Please let me know and i will find some ideas for you to post!! Good Luck!

Hi jamie,
I know i love this site too! Im getting married in July and having Olive Green as my colour scheme! I too have been having MASSIVE dramas finding nice b’maids dresses. Finally i have found nice ones on the Dessy.com website. While the colour is not actually called Olive, its called Moss, but i have actually got a fabric swatch, and its as close as im gonna get i think!!! The other option is to have them made, there seems to be a greater choice of fabric colours available. Im going to keep the rest of the colour scheme real fresh and crisp so all ivory and whites and greens to complement the olive of course (and maybe a hint of pink in the b’maids bouquets!). Good luck :)

Hello,
I’m getting married Sept 6 2009. I think that’s still considered summer. I wanted to use a honeydew green or Kiwi. Would that be ok? What other colors can I use as accent colors? I thought about brown but i don’t want to be limited in the flowers. I want colorful centerpieces that will have green in them also.

* VI Bride: Navy & Yellow ( this i love!! the navy and yellow, do florals in lots of yellows and whites, and greenery, on white linens, will be very spring like!!) and have girls in a darker color, like the navy!!

* Chris & Caitlin’s Spring Wedding

* Board #159: DIY Green and Yellow

* A Spring Green Inspiration Board
(love the all green, that too would be an easy color schem to carry)

i also thought about purple.. an eggplant purple.. look up a picture of an eggplant for inspiration. the green leaves on the dark purple are so beautiful together. have you seen david’s bridal purple bridesmaid dresses? they make some nice deep shaded ones.. you can incorporate green with the flower arrangements too.. anyways.. i love the idea of the deep purple and pear green together.. good choice. i would just google “purple and green wedding” and see what you get!! :D

Sarah,
The article didn’t mention a hunter green probably because of the reason you already stated: it’s not trendy. The article is giving ideas for the colors that people are picking a lot these days.. Fresh greens.. not forest greens. I like hunter green, but I’m just giving a reason for why they probably didn’t mention it…… I’m choosing fresh happy green! :D

I’m going with the very un-trendy hunter green, (think a dark green, like an evergreen tree), for my winter wedding. I’ve been able to find what I need, but it can be difficult at times. I notice that this article didn’t mention using a dark green once. I’m using evergreen seedlings for the centerpieces which the guests can take home and plant. My accent colors are gold and white.

We have chosen olive green and copper with copper being more of an accent color. Problem is when we went to look at the bridesmaid dresses the green color is not good but the copper color is gorgeous. My question is how do I bring the green back in. I really don’t want my groom wearing a copper tie for example. The venue requires you to use there linens which are white, so cannot do an olive chair tie back like above, which is beautiful.
The flowers are green & white hydranges, large white calla lillies, green orchids and the rose petals for the aisle and after the ceromony are rust, bringing in the copper. The men will have green orchids on their jackets with the groom having a double orchid. Center pieces are large callas, with green orchids with copper stones at the bottom of the large vase
Please help, racking my brain and getting more & more confused

I am getting married in august and my colours are green, ivory with bits of gold. I want my bridsemaid to wear green dresses and my sister who is the maid of honour wants to wear a gold dress.I am confused on how to accessorize them but i don’t want them to look very different yet still individual. Should the style of the bridesmaid dressed be different from the maid of honour and the same colour, or the same style and different colours. There is a green tie in the picture above what shade of green is it, and any suggestions where i can find them.thanks

Lacey, what other colors are you thinking of pairing with green? Green & chocolate brown is perfect for fall … a lot of people think “spring” with green and pink wedding, but I think you could still pull it off with some planning or just confidence.

Lots of unusual choices you could pick, too. For example, kelley green and navy blue are super-preppy and great for summer or fall.

Aug bride, think coordinate, not match — your wedding will look MUCH more designed, put together and visually interesting if you bring together different threads of an overall color scheme instead of sweating over matching. :D>-

Or not to name names, but if you look at the two-page spreads of a certain major dress store where the BMs, flower girls, groomsmen’s vests and bride’s sash are all the EXACT same color, you can easily pick up on a monotonous quality … right?

Sal, maybe checkout this ivory, brown and royal purple mood board, it might spark some ideas:

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd198/somermcbride/MoodBoard.jpg

… with little touches of chartreuse, it’s fresh while still being grounded by the chocolate brown and neutral base.

By daisies were you thinking gerber, or the white and yellow shastas?

Hi Ashley,
Im thinking of a mediterranean themed wedding as well..planning on marquee in back garden, so blank canvas! Initial thoughts are olives/mexe plate for started followed by a spit roast - slow roasted lamb (very greek/med!) and then dunno what desserts yet..oh and with ouzo shots on the table to get people in the mood!!! And, really good med wines…colour wise and decorations…how about terracotta pots with big candles in, on the floor to act as uplighters, um…..fairy lights, as the centrepieces, you could have vine leaves and twine all done artistically!!!…..before i thought of the medditerranean idea i was liking the gun metal grey and pink colour scheme for the bridesmaide, but not sure that will work with a med theme..so will have to rethink a few things……

I just cant decided…there are soo many options and all are lovely!!! One minute i want something elegant and refined and then the next minute something fun like the med idea!!! Aghghgh! Let me know what u think..have u come up with any other ideas????
