Dreaming of a Dazzling Green Theme Wedding

When you hear people talking about the color green and its "energy," you hear things like groundedness, growth, connection to the earth. And none of those things are wrong.

But in weddings, green's got a feel all its own, and that feel is fresh, slightly preppy, and above all, modern.

If you're reading this, you've probably found yourself smitten with that look that's unique to the green flower families.

For example: green-tipped hydrangeas and chrysanthemum buttons, green hypericum berries and chartreuse roses, even green anthuriums and callas: they look amazing, and leave you wanting more.

Green Weddings -1

Pink and green's a winning combination that grabs many brides right out of the gate. They're nearly opposites on the color wheel, which makes them deeply satisfying together.

And combined, they have a signature freshness that makes them equally at home in the fun-loving West Coast, deep Deco Miami, or the super-saturated Caribbean.

Green Weddings - 2

And perhaps even more so than all of the above? The preppy East. Especially when in a garden or a great airy tent near the beach, the East Coast wedding seems to be home base for this beguiling combination. Green and pink says "daytime," "cocktail length bridesmaids gowns," and an absolutely charming sense of understated fun.

Green Weddings - 3

Of course, brides have a wealth of choices beyond pink when it comes time to partner up green.

Purple, for example, injects a subtle sense of mystery. So does dialing back from lime green to a more Mediterranean olive. And once you've gone with olive, that invites some super-sophisticated pairings, such as bronze or copper.

Equally beautiful is any shade of green that's paired with some beautifully patterned black and white ... say, a monochromatic damask or toile design.

Green Weddings - 4

And deep chocolate brown makes another gorgeous showcase for green. Its groundedness takes the green theme well into fall, and — if you want it to — more formal territories. Plus, this combo's easier to adapt to indoor evening affairs.

Sage green, olive green, apple green, sour apple, lime green, hunter, chartreuse ...

... which distinctly gorgeous shade of green are you going with?

Hi I am geeting married in June of this year. My colors are lime green and a blue (like the indianapolis colts blue) was wondering if you guys could offer some advice and tips for me. It is going to be a small wedding maybe 50 people. The wedding and reception will be at the same place.

erin,
could you tell me a little more about the formality? i didn’t know if it was simple cake and punch or intimate elegant, or casual fun. where is your venue? house of worship? restaurant?

erin, here is more…
i love, love, love this wedding! so simple and in your colors! if you wanted to go a more budget friendly route on centerpieces, simple green apples or limes in beautiful glass vases or bowls.i saw this and said to myself, i bet this is the one with the ideas your looking for!! i would use lighter blue or soft lime green dresses withthe royal blue and lime bouquets though. to me, it compliments so much better.

Its is actually going to be in a room called the Dolphin room at the Texas State Aquarium. Its a room where one whole wall is glass and you can see the dolphins right up to the glass. Its going to be causual but not like flips flops and shorts. I want cupcakes instead of a traditional wedding cake and I will have like shrimp and chicken pasta for the food. I want it to be very intimate thats why I am only having the 50 people.

erin, wow this is gonna be so fab!! i just looked at the website, (WOW!) i love this!!heh i live in louisiana, can i crash the party!! no i am just joking!!  i wish i could see this!! post pics after!

okay, seriously, i agree with the way you are going with this. i would go with orchids, hydrangeas or a tropical flower, with green amaranthus.( i would use this for sure because it will give a ocean feel to your flowers,)

here is an idea: consider white or beige linens, have small square vases fill with blue food dyed water(in the indianapolis colts blue) and floating candle. i would count each place setting and put a floating candle(out of the way so it cant be knocked over) in center have centerpieces of green and white flowers, you can keep these as low or high as you want. keep this simple. thin about adding simple seashells in your centerpiece, just a few though. or as placecards set in a box of sand. not so much ocean theme, just enough.

i think the centerpiece pic with the branches etc is very nice. it would set this room off, but not to much in the centerpieces cause the aquarium should make an impact. if orchids or hydrangeas is too pricey, then think of a flower you think you would see at the ocean. roses fit, but many websites, i have read roses are not really ocean like. its more orchids, greenery(which you will need to use), lilies, bougainvillea, etc. if the table linens are blue just keep the decor the same. the blue tined water will be gorgeous against them!! here is a link that shows the tinted water and submerged orchids(this would work too, not with the dyed water though)

*Centerpiece Idea 1: Change the container shape

elizabeth, first i want to ask you some questions.

What color is your venue?
What is your theme, if any?
What is your wedding formality?
What colors are in your home and closet? Most of these colors are already a part of what you are drawn too.
What is your fave color? His?
Are there any colors that have special meaning to you and/or your fh, that you would like to incorporate?
What are colors you and/or your fh dislike, that is not an option?

These questions should help you narrow down some colors. When you have a chance, look at these questions and see what you come up with. Usually you already know what you love or at least drawn too. Please let me know and i will find some ideas for you to post!! Good Luck!

Wow! I love this page - you are absolutely fabulous! I am getting married in October and am concentrating on an olive green and light pink color scheme. My fiance and I both have green eyes and love the color. My dress will be ivory - which I also love with olive green. I am thinking about having a light pink gerbera daisies in the bouquets?? BUT… I am having a VERY hard time finding olive green bridesmaid dresses - anyone seen any anywhere or know of a company/designer that carries a nice olive green color?
Thanks so much ladies! :D

Hi jamie,
I know i love this site too! Im getting married in July and having Olive Green as my colour scheme! I too have been having MASSIVE dramas finding nice b’maids dresses. Finally i have found nice ones on the Dessy.com website. While the colour is not actually called Olive, its called Moss, but i have actually got a fabric swatch, and its as close as im gonna get i think!!! The other option is to have them made, there seems to be a greater choice of fabric colours available. Im going to keep the rest of the colour scheme real fresh and crisp so all ivory and whites and greens to complement the olive of course (and maybe a hint of pink in the b’maids bouquets!). Good luck :)

Hello,
I’m getting married Sept 6 2009. I think that’s still considered summer. I wanted to use a honeydew green or Kiwi. Would that be ok? What other colors can I use as accent colors? I thought about brown but i don’t want to be limited in the flowers. I want colorful centerpieces that will have green in them also.

Sarah,
The article didn’t mention a hunter green probably because of the reason you already stated: it’s not trendy. The article is giving ideas for the colors that people are picking a lot these days.. Fresh greens.. not forest greens. I like hunter green, but I’m just giving a reason for why they probably didn’t mention it…… I’m choosing fresh happy green! :D

I’m going with the very un-trendy hunter green, (think a dark green, like an evergreen tree), for my winter wedding. I’ve been able to find what I need, but it can be difficult at times. I notice that this article didn’t mention using a dark green once. I’m using evergreen seedlings for the centerpieces which the guests can take home and plant. My accent colors are gold and white.

Our wedding, two Septebers ago, was full of hunter green, with white and silver accents. Trendy or not, we were delighted with the results, and had many wonderful compliments on the look.

i’m getting married in september!
but i’m stuck..i wanted a summer themed wedding, in the summer. but we pushed it back to september; would it be dumb to still have summer themes when its autumn?
i want my main color to be green–with black and white.
& i want my bridesmaids to wear short summer like dresses.
will this work without the summer sun?

note: this is in alaska.
