Sunflower Theme Weddings

Simply can't imagine your wedding without those bright punches of color that sunflowers bring to the table?

You've got plenty of company!

This all-American flower ... so eloquent in traits like optimism and resilience ... beguiles brides across the country in settings that range from beaches to backyards, from alpine peaks to New England barns, and everywhere in between.

Sunflower Settings

You see sunflowers taking center stage in all kinds of weddings: Western shindigs, oceanside tents, or everywhere the couple wants to convey their carefree, sunny take on love and matrimony.

This theme's also a favorite of bridal shower planners everywhere!

Complementary Colors

There's hardly a color scheme that doesn't suit the accommodating sunflower. For a softer look, we've seen it stun against pale yellow and champagne. But it also shines when combined with jewel tones like wine, navy blue or royal purple, which really brings out its gold tones.

Fresh orange and white stripes look fabulous with this bloom, as do stylish newcomers to the bridal palette, like chocolate brown and celadon.

But for a modern and unforgettable take on sunflowers, pair them with shiny steel gray fabrics ... or a big, graphic, op-art style black and white wedding. Nothing sets off a bouquet of mini-sunflowers with more explosive appeal than a bridemaid's LBD (little black dress).

Fetching Floral Pairs

Of course, sunflowers can really sparkle when combined with other fetching flowers. Some bride-tested favorites — for combining with mini-suns in particular — include chocolate cosmos, yellow chrysanthemums, gerber daisies and Black Baccara or Black Magic roses.

More Center-Stage Touches for Sunflowers

How else can the unsinkable 'sun' lend a grace note to your wedding?

Nothng else looks better than these substantial blooms when it comes to big, bright garlands. Drape over the front of the head table, or dress a birch or iron wedding arch to the nines.

Choose invitations with a cheery, letterpressed graphic interpretation (modern) ... or printed on beautiful hand-pressed papers (rustic).

If you're having a late-season backyard bash and a few months to plan, it's easy to grow a towering sunflower aisle for guests to wander through and admire.

A plush, oversized sunflower head and a pinned-on satin ribbon makes a one-of-a-kind ring pillow for your little bearer.

Delight the deserving mothers: hand each one a single long-stemmed sunflower to honor them during the ceremony.

'Sun'-suous Tables

The sporty sunflower fits right into almost any floral scheme, looking equally at home paired with exotic orchids or roses. But if you want to show off their beauty more directly, here are a few gorgeous settings for these rustic jewels.

A simple hand-tied arrangement of full-size and mini suns looks stunning in buckets, vases or watering cans of galvanized metal. They're equally lovely in white painted pails or small stoneware milk jugs.

Unexpected accents that set off this bloom's beauty: twisted copper wire, heather or wheat, or green hypericum berries.

For a sweet Tuscan look, place a single large bloom in a beautiful olive-green wine bottle.

Or combine these blooms with sassy citrus fruit in containers: lemons or oranges, whole or cut, make the perfect pairing.

Romanticize your suns by surrounding with yellow and cream-colored rose petals on a sumptuous fabric base.

Finally, don't forget the water treatment! Single heads float beautifully in water features (bowls, fountains, pools). And for a casual, chic beach wedding, fill mason jars with blue-tinted water, topped with a small bouquet of these beauties.

Bright and Flirty Favors

Sunflower brides like to celebrate cheerful colors and new life with their wedding favors, too. So popular choices include glowing golden honey jars, and plantable seed cards. Dark chocolate truffles in a brightly-colored box echoes this bloom's rich, appealing center, while chocolate-covered sunflower seeds transform a down-home snack into a sleek, sweet treat.

Just a suggestion . . . if you are having an outdoor wedding, or
if you want to mark the driveway of the church or home where
you are having the wedding, consider using some of the nice
sunflower flags that are available. These are from http://www.justforfunflags.com.

Hi Ladies,
I, like many of you, am also planning a sunflower themed wedding. My Bridesmaids are wearing brown t length dresses from Jcrew and my guys are wearing black tuxes with sage green vests and ties. My current dilemma is what flower should I use for the guys’ boutineers? I am not a fan of big flowers for them, but have no idea what to use. It doesn’t have to be a sunflower. I’m flexible. Your help would be really appreciated! :)

ashley,
i would personally stick with a green foliage boutonniere. it would match the rustic and elegant beauty of the sunflower. perfect compliment!!

Stick with something simple and outdoorsy-ferns with an acorn, or even some pine or leaves (if it’s a fall wedding).

My niece is getting married in October and using Sunflowers and daisys. You could use daisy’s with some greenery or use sunflowers when they are very small, just starting to open.
Best wishes!

I am getting maried March 29, 2010 and we are having a country themed wedding at my father’s house. It isn’t a farm or anything, but we want to use hay bales for seating and we are going non-traditional with the cake, as we are thinking of doing individual Strawberry Shortcakes. We are wearin Blue Jeans and White Button-up Shirts. I want to incrporate Sunflowers, but what I have concerns about is the red in the shortcakes. Should I have the BM wear red shirts and forget about the sunflowers and change the flowers or use all four colors (blue, white, red and yelow)? Any help would be appreciated!!!

dawn,
the red in the shortcake s will add a old fashioned feel. i would not add the color anywhere else. with any party you will have food bringing in different colors; doesnt mean you need to add them to the color scheme. it will be perfect especially the “traditional” blend of colors that go in a country wedding!! smile. keep the sunflowers, if you do want to add a bit of red elsewhere then consider putting your favors in red bandanas. it would lend an xtra country feel to the wedding. bandanas are associated with “country” not just western. tie the ends or bunch it up and wrap with twine and voila a little red to the setting. i hope this helps!! :D :peaceout:

Don’t forget . . . .they have red tinted sunflowers!
They’re are many kinds. The only problem you may run
into is getting red sunflowers in March. Consider doing a
small arragement with silk red sunflowers for your dessert table that will tranision into your other decorations and flowers.
Or consider doing arrangements with both kinds. Check out your local nursery, talk with your florist, or go to your local craft store to get a look at what is available to you. Good Luck!

I’m getting married August 29, 2009 and I am using sunflowers. My bridesmaids are wearing chocolate brown. I was going to use dark red gerbera daisies for an extra punch but I’m on a small budget and am using silk flowers. So far I haven’t been able to find any silk geberas I like in the color I want. Do any of you have suggestions on either where to find high quality silk gerberas, another dark red flower that would compliment sunflowers, or another color altogether that would work with brown and yellow. My wedding is going to have a touch of a country feel to it was well with the centerpieces being mason jars with flowers and candles in them.

E Hal,

See Silk Specialties

also google image silk gerbera daisy. if you are looking locally, you craft store should have beautiful gerbera daisies. but be careful, some silks can be hard on a budget too. have you considered just simple greenery and fake red berries? you could also add other berry sprays. check out blackberries, etc. they will lend a great color to your sunflowers and you should be able to get those in abundance budget friendly. another idea is instead of artificial greenery add fresh clipped greenery, from the woods or an abiding yard, in the mix. it will add a little something to your silks. its a popular concept now mixing real and silks. i personally love the berries and sunflowers what a country feel to it! i am from the country so our bouquets have these items and they are so welcoming and beautiful!

Hi.

If you go to any flower stall/market in your town centre, you can pick up gerbera for 50p each, might be worth asking them if they will do a discount for bulk orders. Or alternatively you could use chrysanthemum, cheaper and they have more longevity.
I personally, would go for white instead of the red. It will allow the sunflower to stand out and it will break up the bold blocks of colour. They’ll also look really cute and rustic in the mason jars.

I too am having a sunflower themed wedding this year. I can’t wait!

I hope you find a solution to your quandary soon!

Best wishes,
Tea

Stacy,

They have candied sunflower seeds you could give out in little packets. Another idea is sugar cookies decorated as sunflowers but this probably wouldn’t be as elegant as the rest of your wedding sounds. My mom did these when we were young. You use a round flat chocolate mint (junior mint?) for the center and candy corn for the petals. HTH!

This is really great! It’s just what I’ve been looking for! I really need some theme ideas for my wedding, you know. In fact, I never thought that there is such a thing as “Sunflower Theme Wedding” . I was even kind of hesitant to tell my wedding coordinator that I want a lot of sunflowers on my wedding day. So she was kinda asking me if it was already the theme. I said most probably, it is.
It all actually started with my niece and I coming up with a decision for a motif. Green is my favorite color; but which green? My niece suggested forest green with a touch of yellow. At first, I couldn’t visualize what she was saying so I asked her what exactly that color looks like. She reminded me of my dress I wore on her high school graduation day. Guess what? I loved that Sunflower dress! I wish I could also have my photo seen here, wearing that dress. he he…
Anyway, thank you so much, really. You’re such a big help. I might as well start planting sunflowers. I wonder how long it takes before it bears flowers, though. Is nine months just enough time to grow sunflowers? I’m getting married next year, in January.
Thanks again and more power!

Carmen, I’ve seen so many dress colors look stunning with sunflowers. A pale, butter yellow looks wonderful. But so do jewel tones, even steel gray. In fact there aren’t many colors that won’t look great with them.

Maybe check back there in a few days, I will try to post some gown and sunflower pics in the comments section. In the meantime what are your favorite colors? I bet your top choices would combine really well.

‘kay Carmen, I’m developing an infinite-seeming file of bridesmaids & sunflower pics, here is installment one for your delight!

I think this goes to show that there is no known color you can’t put with sunflowers, you might expect the colors to be ‘mostly autumn’ (brown, burgundy, rust) or mostly country (blue, periwinkle, butter), but the fact is, they are all over the map …. you have cobalt, black, persimmon … and all kinds of brides are using sunflowers!

So here are a few to start with. If you like any of these pics click on the credit below to see more of the wedding!

row one : 1) Gina’s wedding, 2) Kara & Shane, 3) Robin & Paul.
row two: 1) Mel & Dan, 2) Sophie & Lee, 3) Nate & Kate.
row three: 1) Darren & Marci, 2) Phil & Jo, 3) Jamie& Roz.
row four: 1) Kristian & Sarah (oh how I love this pic!), 2) Christine & Jason, 3) Meghan & James

Hi Barbara, the first thing that comes to mind is take a galvanized watering can, say. Tuck in a casual bouquet of mini-suns, a few Circus roses, a few stalks of wheat. Then tuck spiraled copper wire (easy to bend) at the edges of the bouquet, at the same time creating snazzy “holders” for the various utensils so you can actually make them part of the centerpiece.

Then I’m seeing a beautiful, oversized sheer organza ribbon, patterned (gingham or color-blocked) tied in a bow to the watering can handle. For a less rustic look, change up the container. Use cobalt blue or graphic black & white crockery/vases.

If this is totally off the mark tell us more about your centerpiece needs :D

Why I am posting these, aside from the awesome, bold work on the cupcakes by Yummy Piece of Cake, which are a GREAT idea for sunflower weddings?

This shows how even a flower as rustic and relaxed as the sunflower can be ridiculously elegant in a creative setting. The pale yellow organza swags, the gold chivari chairs, the paper lanterns, the unexpected and wonderful chartreuse and cream floral arrangements — together it’s completely toney in a fresh way … fabulous.

I love wedding cakes that are just a little left-of-center or a little stripped down or just interpret ‘the usual’ in a slightly different way. Here are three awesome sunflower theme cakes that I think fit the bill.

1) I love this chunky boho style SO much! At its cutest here, with a really nice custom topper for an outdoorsy couple that loves to hike. By Tzila Cakes.

2) Love this cake! The designer OOZES talent. His cakes are exuberant but not even slightly cloying. Clearly, he loves draped fabric effects, architectural flowers and bold colors. He has a vision and he goes for it. (Sunflower brides probably should see his lace & gerbera cake too.)

3) This sweet and totally-not-fussy cake is from Sweet Pea Bakery. The clean lines just let us focus on those lovely colors and petals.
