Complementary Colors
There's hardly a color scheme that doesn't suit the accommodating sunflower. For a softer look, we've seen it stun against pale yellow and champagne. But it also shines when combined with jewel tones like wine, navy blue or royal purple, which really brings out its gold tones.Fresh orange and white stripes look fabulous with this bloom, as do stylish newcomers to the bridal palette, like chocolate brown and celadon.
But for a modern and unforgettable take on sunflowers, pair them with shiny steel gray fabrics ... or a big, graphic, op-art style black and white wedding. Nothing sets off a bouquet of mini-sunflowers with more explosive appeal than a bridemaid's LBD (little black dress).
Fetching Floral Pairs
Of course, sunflowers can really sparkle when combined with other fetching flowers. Some bride-tested favorites — for combining with mini-suns in particular — include chocolate cosmos, yellow chrysanthemums, gerber daisies and Black Baccara or Black Magic roses.More Center-Stage Touches for Sunflowers
How else can the unsinkable 'sun' lend a grace note to your wedding?Nothng else looks better than these substantial blooms when it comes to big, bright garlands. Drape over the front of the head table, or dress a birch or iron wedding arch to the nines.
Choose invitations with a cheery, letterpressed graphic interpretation (modern) ... or printed on beautiful hand-pressed papers (rustic).
If you're having a late-season backyard bash and a few months to plan, it's easy to grow a towering sunflower aisle for guests to wander through and admire.
A plush, oversized sunflower head and a pinned-on satin ribbon makes a one-of-a-kind ring pillow for your little bearer.
Delight the deserving mothers: hand each one a single long-stemmed sunflower to honor them during the ceremony.
'Sun'-suous Tables
The sporty sunflower fits right into almost any floral scheme, looking equally at home paired with exotic orchids or roses. But if you want to show off their beauty more directly, here are a few gorgeous settings for these rustic jewels.A simple hand-tied arrangement of full-size and mini suns looks stunning in buckets, vases or watering cans of galvanized metal. They're equally lovely in white painted pails or small stoneware milk jugs.
Unexpected accents that set off this bloom's beauty: twisted copper wire, heather or wheat, or green hypericum berries.
For a sweet Tuscan look, place a single large bloom in a beautiful olive-green wine bottle.
Or combine these blooms with sassy citrus fruit in containers: lemons or oranges, whole or cut, make the perfect pairing.
Romanticize your suns by surrounding with yellow and cream-colored rose petals on a sumptuous fabric base.
Finally, don't forget the water treatment! Single heads float beautifully in water features (bowls, fountains, pools). And for a casual, chic beach wedding, fill mason jars with blue-tinted water, topped with a small bouquet of these beauties.
Bright and Flirty Favors
Sunflower brides like to celebrate cheerful colors and new life with their favors, too. So popular choices include glowing golden honey jars, and plantable seed cards. Dark chocolate truffles in a brightly-colored box echoes this bloom's rich, appealing center, while chocolate-covered sunflower seeds transform a down-home snack into a sleek, sweet treat. You Might Also Like ...

This is really great! It’s just what I’ve been looking for! I really need some theme ideas for my wedding, you know. In fact, I never thought that there is such a thing as “Sunflower Theme Wedding” . I was even kind of hesitant to tell my wedding coordinator that I want a lot of sunflowers on my wedding day. So she was kinda asking me if it was already the theme. I said most probably, it is.
It all actually started with my niece and I coming up with a decision for a motif. Green is my favorite color; but which green? My niece suggested forest green with a touch of yellow. At first, I couldn’t visualize what she was saying so I asked her what exactly that color looks like. She reminded me of my dress I wore on her high school graduation day. Guess what? I loved that Sunflower dress! I wish I could also have my photo seen here, wearing that dress. he he…
Anyway, thank you so much, really. You’re such a big help. I might as well start planting sunflowers. I wonder how long it takes before it bears flowers, though. Is nine months just enough time to grow sunflowers? I’m getting married next year, in January.
Thanks again and more power!

‘kay Carmen, I’m developing an infinite-seeming file of bridesmaids & sunflower pics, here is installment one for your delight!
I think this goes to show that there is no known color you can’t put with sunflowers, you might expect the colors to be ‘mostly autumn’ (brown, burgundy, rust) or mostly country (blue, periwinkle, butter), but the fact is, they are all over the map …. you have cobalt, black, persimmon … and all kinds of brides are using sunflowers!
So here are a few to start with. If you like any of these pics click on the credit below to see more of the wedding!
row one : 1) Gina’s wedding, 2) Kara & Shane, 3) Robin & Paul.
row two: 1) Mel & Dan, 2) Sophie & Lee, 3) Nate & Kate.

Carmen, I’ve seen so many dress colors look stunning with sunflowers. A pale, butter yellow looks wonderful. But so do jewel tones, even steel gray. In fact there aren’t many colors that won’t look great with them.
Maybe check back there in a few days, I will try to post some gown and sunflower pics in the comments section. In the meantime what are your favorite colors? I bet your top choices would combine really well.

Hi Barbara, the first thing that comes to mind is take a galvanized watering can, say. Tuck in a casual bouquet of mini-suns, a few Circus roses, a few stalks of wheat. Then tuck spiraled copper wire (easy to bend) at the edges of the bouquet, at the same time creating snazzy “holders” for the various utensils so you can actually make them part of the centerpiece.
Then I’m seeing a beautiful, oversized sheer organza ribbon, patterned (gingham or color-blocked) tied in a bow to the watering can handle. For a less rustic look, change up the container. Use cobalt blue or graphic black & white crockery/vases.
If this is totally off the mark tell us more about your centerpiece needs

Why I am posting these, aside from the awesome, bold work on the cupcakes by Yummy Piece of Cake, which are a GREAT idea for sunflower weddings?
This shows how even a flower as rustic and relaxed as the sunflower can be ridiculously elegant in a creative setting. The pale yellow organza swags, the gold chivari chairs, the paper lanterns, the unexpected and wonderful chartreuse and cream floral arrangements — together it’s completely toney in a fresh way … fabulous.

I love wedding cakes that are just a little left-of-center or a little stripped down or just interpret ‘the usual’ in a slightly different way. Here are three awesome sunflower theme cakes that I think fit the bill.
1) I love this chunky boho style SO much! At its cutest here, with a really nice custom topper for an outdoorsy couple that loves to hike. By Tzila Cakes.
2) Love this cake! The designer OOZES talent. His cakes are exuberant but not even slightly cloying. Clearly, he loves draped fabric effects, architectural flowers and bold colors. He has a vision and he goes for it. (Sunflower brides probably should see his lace & gerbera cake too.)
3) This sweet and totally-not-fussy cake is from Sweet Pea Bakery. The clean lines just let us focus on those lovely colors and petals.
