Nurse or Police Theme Weddings
See Also
Dear Janitor: I'm planning a wedding for next september 2006, and
I wondered if you had any ideas for creative favors.
Our
wedding theme is policeman/nurse (I'm a nurse and he's a policeman).
We've found a cake topper, balloons, etc., but we're unable to think
of creative favors or centerpieces. Any suggestions??

Whew
— we admit it, K. This was a challenge!
If you’re reading this, you might already know that the nurse and police officer marriage is a mini-theme in itself, just like nurse and firefighter. That’s to say, a nurse marries a police officer so often, you can sometimes find wedding items made specifically for the occasion… though not many.
So that's where ingenuity comes in. Ready? Then don your caps,
strap on your work boots and get set for some nurse/police wedding
ideas.
The Grand Entrance
If you can swing it, skip the limos and make your entrance in an ambulance, EMT van or squad car.
Calling All Cake Toppers
Although K already found her cake topper and other decorations,
we thought we’d link to them here for other brides:Nurse bride

These caketops can be customized according to the bride or groom’s uniform.

What to Wear
If you want to keep it traditional, your must-have accessory is the police
garter.Police Wedding Garter 1 - Handcrafted Creations
Police Wedding Garter 2 - AllSports Weddings
Attach a beautiful and affordable nurse’s charm if you like: caduceus, stethoscope, nurse's cap.
Decorating the Venue
Line the aisle runner with police tape.Sew a pair of handcuffs (painted ivory or white) to the ringbearer’s pillow, and attach your wedding rings. Give the best man the key so the groom can unlock the rings.
If you can pull it off, take a page from dog-friendly couples and consider having a K9 attendant in ballistic vest perform as the ring bearer.
Have hospital badges custom-made for the bridal party.

Centerpiece Ideas
One option: formal centerpieces based on candles, hurricane lamps or flowers, and merely accent with your occupation. For example, dangle crystals, police charms and nurse charms from your flower arrangements, or scatter white flower petals and Matchbox squad cars and ambulances around your hurricane lamps.
Use
a standard
sized silver-plated frame as the base for each of your centerpieces.
With a hot-glue gun, glue blue, white and/or clear glass jewels across the top of each frame. Hot-glue a nurse or police charm in the center (use wire cutters to snip off any wire rings). Try these eBay searches for Nurse Charms or Police Charms.
Fill each frame with photographs of you and your intended: as children, at medical school, at the academy.
Use tasteful occupational items you purchased on eBay to decorate the walls and heap around each frame:
- White vintage nurses shoes with classic chunky heels: paint with simple designs, or fill with small flower arrangements
- Inexpensive vintage nurse books, Red Cross pins, patches, photos, posters, nurse caps and Army nurse hats, long navy nurse cloaks, stethoscopes and delectable vintage nurse stories (Cherry Ames, Kathy Martin)
- Vintage badges, toy cars and motorcycles, vintage police helmets and motorcycle boots, dispatch microphones, police hats, aviator sunglasses, brass buttons and police whistles.
Get a police hat and a nurse cap, two white teddy bears and some bandages. Dress up the “bridal couple” – take it as far as you want (handcuffs?)
Scatter emergency vehicle toy cars – Matchbox style and larger ones from the dollar store – at the kids’ table.
Cafeteria Cuisine ... or That Midnight Stop at the Coffee Shop
For him: fill a tiered set of platters … with classic glazed donuts, naturally. Tuck toy police cars among the tiers. This is one time you’ll want to serve coffee in Styrofoam cups. For her: Serve a funky little side table of macaroni and cheese, peas and mashed potatoes.
Consider a very crisp, clean white fondant cake with a blue satin ribbon. Or tiered cupcakes with navy frosting ribbons around the base and a Red Cross medallion on top. The groom’s cake is a badge, of course.

To Protect and Favor
1)
Occupational Wine Charms
At $9.95 apiece, they aren’t cheap, but they’re beautiful. This site offers both police and nurse wine charms, and for no extra charge allows you to roll your own (combine nurse and police in one set, if you like). You can break each set of six into smaller gift sets for your guests. Excellent.
