Chocolate Brown Weddings

Once upon a time, 'chocolate brown' went by a variety of names in bridal world: cocoa. Espresso.

But now, it's like the most visible Hilton heir: Paris — just Paris. Everyone knows who you mean.

Chocolate Brown is the color that fuels any number of high-flying color schemes. It's the go-to hue, whether it's a fall wedding that needs a touch of naturalism, or a fresh concept by a "design progressive" bride armed with a Gocco press, a bucketful of Etsy bookmarks and shelves groaning with artisan papers.

In fact, chocolate brown is so successful, so flexible, so multitalented, so attractive in any combination, that occasionally people wish. It would. Go away.

Alas for the chocolate-tigued, that's a migration not likely to happen — at least not soon. The world's still crazy-in-love with chocolate, and all its savory cousins: coffee, mocha, tan. Its hoped-for heir apparent, steel gray, has made inroads ... but has yet to take the wedding world by storm.

And that might not happen right away, because among the neutrals — unlike gunmetal gray! — chocolate brown is warm. Inviting. Feminine, even.

Pair it with just about any imaginable pastel or bright tropical hue, and you've got intimate, instant chic.

How to Get Down With Brown

The first colors brides paired with chocolate brown — pink and baby blue — are still enormous hits. (Sorry, wedding planners!)

But later on in the craze, we started to see new hues: butter yellow, lime or apple green. And that original pink got bumped up to sizzling fuchsia. We saw ultra-warm pairings like salmon, peach and burnt orange take their cue. So did aqua and teal.

As royal purple and eggplant colonized the pages of Vogue, they too started flaunting their charms against a field of chocolate brown. So did lavender.

Now, cutting-edge weddings interweave brown with fire-engine reds, copper and oranges, adding exotic touches like pin-tucked linens and fringe. Sometimes, you see brown with burgundy, a dark but elegant pairing ... and sometimes with crisp, patterned black and white.

Beautiful Byways

To most eyes, it's the warm and 'poppy' colors that meld best with chocolate brown.

Still, there are blessed exceptions. Cool sage and brown launches the ultimate West Coast palette, especially with twigs or branches, bamboo, palm-leaf, handmade papers and other natural materials.

Also down with brown: monochromatics like champagne, khaki and cream. All this adds up to a Tuscan vibe that's positively royal. Just add dabs of gold, olive or brick.

Designing Brides

Everyone knows the traditional wedding: tulle, rose and shasta daisy affairs infused with lavender, pale yellow and other blushing hues.

Then, you've got naturalistic weddings — keyed to the blazing hues of a New England hillside in fall.

But plenty of times, chocolate brown weddings are a third type: those about pure design.

Here, you see all those sassy, style-infused hallmarks of modern events: patterns (paisleys, damasks, moroccan or henna-style, just to name a few!). And bright chunks of contrasting satin ribbon.

Then, you see cakes stacked in 'gift box' designs, or flaunting quilted, embossed or hand-painted fondant, ribbons, or graphic accents (polka dots, swiss dots, art nouveau swirls or preppy stripes, anyone?).

And modern centerpieces look sharp in this setting: think trays full of wheat grass studded with gerber stems. Or clear cylinders filled with 'drowning' florals and topped with a floating candle.

Papers are uber-important, too. As for invites? Spunky and graphic, if not outright letterpressed in some swanky coastal atelier.

In other words, chocolate brown weddings really are all about detail.

Dialing Up Table Details

Because brown functions as a neutral and can be dark in quantity, this wedding offers the perfect excuse to mix up table linens and centerpieces. Drape some tables with chocolate brown linens and others with cream or mocha, alternating overlays.

Then, for focal points, mix up your centerpieces in color and style. If your colors are pink and brown, work in some pale green and peach blooms to add depth to your palette. Use higher centerpieces on some tables, lower on others, and simple lanterns or hurricane lamps on still others.

Funkified Florals

Modern, youthful blooms look gorgeous in this context, such as gerber daisies, mini-callas or cymbidium orchids.

Want actual brown blossoms in your bouquets? Take a look at chocolate brown cosmos, hot chocolate mini-callas, or sultry leucadendrons, to name a few: all of which look fabulous with cream mini-callas or green orchids. Fiddleheads are another super-stylish accent.

For bridesmaids in brown, monochromatic cream bouquets in a tight posy style are simple but stunning.

Over-the-Top Touches

As always, a candy buffet looks terrific in a color-popping wedding like this one.

For fun photo ops outdoors, hand your bridesmaids some super-bright parasols in your alternate color and ask them to pop 'em. They'll look like free-wheeling flowers in pics.

And here's one fun last idea for chocolate brides: liven up your bridal attire with a pair of bright heels to match the theme: fuchsia, teal, or lime green!

I need help. I wanted a fall color wedding scheme but my dear partner wants to wear a black suit. I found a black and white dress. It is a simple backyard wedding with just 20 people. I wanted to have brown table cloths with cream overlays but am thinking of going with black with cream overlays. I still want a mix of fall flowers becasue it is my favorite season. Is it weird to have cream as the accent in the decor but my dress to be black and white? I alos found a brown dress and am thinking of going black, white, and tan with the linens along with fall flowers. If I do that, should the cake be white or off-white? It is going to have a floral toppper in fall colors.

    Help!
    WE are getting married 9/23/11.
    WEdding dress is IVORY.
Groomsmen are in CHOCOLATE tux with GOLDEN vest.
Bridesmaids were in PERSIMMONS dresses but they are nolonger available. WE are having an outdoor fall wedding and liked these colors. We just changed the BM dresses to SANGRIA. We will use orange in the flower colors. will the chocolate tuxedos work with the sangria dresses.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Third baseman,
      Absolutely.
I retouched a previous board I put together to show how it can look. I would use a solid brown vest/tie and pull the gold in somewhere in the accents. Hope this helps.

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Third baseman,
I put a brown tux with sangria then tried with golden vest. It didnt look as good with the orange colored bouquets. Here is the results( pics)

  3. Confused

I’m having a February wedding and I’m not completely sure about my colors. I want the BM to wear choc. brown and I think I’m getting a white dress. I thought of them carring candles with hanging flowers. I don’t know whether to use brown and white flowers, brown and beige, or what. I don’t want the BM flowers or mine to clash with a white dress. Should I add another color too? Please Help!

My friend is having a yellow and white wedding and we were trying to figure out how could we incorporate medium blue in the wedding because the walls at the reception center are white at the top and bule at the buttom, we were thinking about white table linens and white runners and three vase centerpieces with floating candles on the table, how can we jazz the receptions up to make it seem elegant and do you know where we can find chair back covers for folding chairs that we can buy

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Faye,
Just do a simple google search on “folding chair wedding covers” and it will bring up a ton of links. You can even narrow them down for you area.

      * yellow & blue wedding

      * centerpieces like the bridal bouquets are perfect for what you’re after…

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        faye,
I meant to tell you that having blue in the decor isn’t necessary because yellow is the perfect compliment. If you did want a touch of blue think of blue hydrangeas and then have your menu cards with dark blue writing on white cardstock. You could also consider a romantic or beautiful runner in a blue and yellow pattern. A soft romantic paisley add floating candles(which is what I would go with if the venue is not patterned to much). Have a simple yellow rose on each place setting on the white program or menu with the blue wording. You can also have submerged florals with the floating candles or tuck yellow and blue florals around base. Another thing is have sliced lemons in the floating candle vases. I can look at the venue if you like, so I can see what works best. It could be that a colored linen would work best. Have the main yellow/white, then pull in a shade of blue in the venue. :D

  7. Sonja

    Hi Stacey
Getting married in March 2012 in Botswana! Trying to organise an elegant bush wedding…
Colours: chocolate, burgundy and gold. My groom would like to see me in burgundy. Shall I do the flowergirls and maid of honour in gold or brown? Also tablecloths – brown. Overlays? Gold? Planning to use lots of storm laterns sprayed gold & candles. Any more ideas? I don’t want the tables to be too busy, as the colours are so rich.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Sonja,
I think the girls in gold would be perfect.
You may find some ideas here…

If you go to the Brides website you can type in search box….out of africa( colin cowie) and it should pull up all the pics. The website won’t post for some reason. I would actually have the gold with brown overlays, then pull in some burgundy florals and greenery. Pull in some natural elements, even feathers.
      Some pics….

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Sonja,

        • Sonja

Thanks – some excellent ideas. Now, if my dress is burgundy, what do I do for my bouquet? I’m not too sure about using yellow flowers. Maybe something that’s not flowers, or even nothing?

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Sonja,
You can definitely choose something that feels comfy to you, it can be floral or even heirloom. I have heard of brides carrying something as simple as a neckalce, rosary, etc. One thing you could do is carry a hand full of roses and hand them out to your mother, grandmother, FMIL, and his grandmother etc. Then you dont have to bother with toting a bouquet back down the aisle. For pictures, have a single rose to hold. Or I was thinking you could carry a earthy mix of maybe burgundy and creams. If your using a florist, they will ask for a pic even a fabric swatch of the dress to find the best bouquet style and colors. Sahara roses are great to carry, with their beige tones. Also you coudl carry a gold colored bouquet. Some roses have a golden hue to them, add red berries, it would be beautiful.

    • Frances Yong

      HI Stacey

Have attached pictures of my church venue!

      THanks,
      Frances

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Frances,
Blue and yellow would be perfect. Yellow will give a cheery feel, just in color. For a theme, look to what you love and incorporate a motif, like a season, a fave place, etc.

  12. Hi Stacey,

  14. Vicki

    Hi,
I am thinking of getting married in September (in WI). I can’t decide between that and May. If I were to pick May I was thinking light pink and tangerine or maybe peach. Now I’m sort of leaning towards September for weather purposes and feel I need to go darker. I was thinking of doing chocolate brown dresses although I find it overdone and then adding pink and peach in the flowers. Any other suggestions? Is it difficult to have three colors?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Vicki,
Can I see your venue? That way I can see the colors that compliment. :D

  15. shelby Gleason

:love2: Hi, I am getting married in June at a winery and for my colors I would love to use an egg plant purple and chocolate brown with hints of leopard print throughout the wedding. I am having a hard time figuring out how to pull this all together. There are not many samples/pictures out there. Does anyone have any pictures/suggestions

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Shelby,
You could have leopard print banding around wedding cakes, bouquet ribbon, invites, ribbon around purple napkins with a jewel to secure. Anothe thing you could do is have leopard chair sashes on your chair covers, then pull in the print onto the ribbon around napkins.
      * not your color scheme but check this out

  16. Amy S.

Our wedding date is November 11, 2011 and our colors our chocolate brown and gold. We are using white linens and chair covers, brown sashes, and for the table runners we are using a brown satin runner with a sheer gold runner overlapping it. We will have clear vases with white (most likely) flowers.

My fiance and I are going to be making glass beads to use as a garland on a wish tree and also for the handles on our cake knive/server. The problem is that niether brown glass nor gold glass are very pretty. I would like to use a color with some more punch. Should we stick with brown and gold for the glasswork or is it okay to deviate? And if so, what color(s) should we incorporate?

Also, if we add a third color, should we add it to something besides the glass? Perhaps the cake or the invitations?

Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you!

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Amy S.,
Have you thought about a shade of orange? Even Fuschia would look nice. Could I get a ook at your venue to see what colors could work with the brown and gold? thanks!!

      • Amy S.

Thanks, Stacey. I did consider orange, but wasn’t sure how that would look with the gold. Last night, I thought I made up my mind and had decided to use a shade of turqouise or tiffany blue. BUT THEN, after pulling up a picture of the venue for you, I began to consider using the reddish-coral color that is in the carpet. What do you think?

        Thanks in advance,
        Amy

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Amy S,
Oh yes, using brown linens and having reddish coral centerpieces would really be perfect!! The room needs that color, cause muted tones seem to fade into the room and carpet. Do varying shades of coral with maybe reds. Like these colors…

My fiance and I are getting married on October 12, 2012. We aren’t into themes so we have decided to work with color and throw a contemporary or modern feel to the wedding/reception. Our colors are brown, red and white. I will be wearing a white dress and prefer silver so I am trying to stay away from cream or bronze to eliminate the need for gold. I would love to throw some accent colors of orange and yellow to complete the fall season. We will be honeymooning in Paris and have tossed around the idea of including Paris into our reception by naming the tables the places we plan to visit as well as using eiffel tower favors in silver. We will use dahlias, crespedias (billy balls) and some fiddlehead ferns in our flowers. Any ideas you have to help this all come together would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Thank you,
    Melanie

  18. ariane

    Hi!

My fiance and I are getting married in New Haven on October 23 2011 at an ol elegant building. We are using brown, champagne, seaweed, and some color in the orange red spectrum for an accent. Any suggestions for a specific shade and/or photo examples using this combo?

    Thanks!
    Ariane

I am planning a wedding at a vineyard..I have always dreamed of using a dark purple (egg plant) and a dark brown….with hints of leopard print. I need some ideas on how to make this wedding unique and elegant without it looking cheezy.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Shelby,
I would put leopard print bands around the wedding cake, add touches of leopard print in the wedding ribbons on bouquets, leopard print shoes, sashes, etc.
      * Oh this is great!! have bridal party in chocolate and use purple blooms, or use eggplant and guys in brown with eggplant vest and ties, girls carry shades of purples with a touch of green( greenery, then pull in eggplant in the reception area and have touches of chocoalte like in the ink on paper goods, brown ribbon on the favor boxes, etc.

    Hi Stracey,

Can you create a color board for me? My colors are chocolate, gold, and a deep turquoise. The ladys will be in chocolate. My dress is cream. What do you suggest for the floral and center pieces? The wedding is July 2.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Melissa,
Here are some sample boards and the colros may be more aqua but I hope it helps. i would pull the gold in on the cake, gold ink on paper goods, and possibly in the bouquet ribbon( think a print), brown tuxes, gold ties/vests, blue and green bouquets, gold plate chargers.
      * board 1
      * board 2( use blue florals thruout)
      * or use a shade of orange like here

My Bridesmaid’s will be in chocolate brown with champagne tie at the waist. I want my colors to be chocolate brown, rust orange, champagne, and burgandy! We are doing the ceterpieces ourselves, but his aunt is a florist and will be helping! I dont want the theme to be too “country,” because we are not, I want classy and elegant and am need of idease!
    HELP!

    Kalynda Ferguson

    Dallas, Tx

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Kalynda,
Will you be renting linens? if so what color will you be using? I think champagne linens would be beautiful, tie in some chocolate accents, then pull in some burgundy/orange florals.
I think this site will help you since you are looking for elegant “country”.

  23. We are having a wedding in April the colors are Turquoise and Brown. We are using Gerber daises if you could help us out any. Thank you so much.

  24. Krystal

    Hi Stacey,

We’re getting married on August 19, 2011 and colors are lime/kiwi green, chocolate brown and fuschia as our accent color (flowers) I’m really stresssing on how to make these colors work well together so here’s what I have so far and open to help and any opinion you may have

    BM in green
GM in C/Brown w/green and tie

I have attached a picture of the dress that I’m so in love with but have not yet purchased because I really wanna be sure that everything will work well together it’s in white and silver lace and not sure about the groom I want him in all white as well but he has olive skin will the pure white work or should he go in white w/ green vest and tie or maybe the c/ brown I don’t know this is so stressful

    Thank you in advance
    Krystal

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Krystal,
The dress is beautiful. It will work well. White will work for his skintone. If he has a yellowish-olive skintone the green vest/tie may not work well. If he has golden/classic olive skin choose the white or the brown. I would talk to him and see what he likes. What you have sounds beautiful.

    • Norma

Krystal, Ive seen pictures of the very same bridesmaid dresses you have chosen online, but cannot find a place to buy them because the pictures haven’t had any sources. I think the dress is beautiful, where can I order one?

  25. Macy

My bridesmaids dresses are a dark marine color. My dress is a light gold (but really is sort of dark ivory). I have my heart set on brown satin tablesloths and gold chiavari chairs. Do I need to incorperate brown into the groomsmen? They will just be wearing black, but was thinking about a dark chocolate brown (to match the tablecloths). The flowers are a green orchids for me, and white hydrangeas for the girls, so not any competing colors in boquets. Any opinions would be great!

  26. Lady D

    Hi Stacey,
I think I have to many colors going on, so please help! I am getting married this spring and my colors are chocolate and pool blue. The bms are wearing the chocolate but I have chosen pool blue for the mohs. All the dresses are strapless and long. My dress is ivory and champange and I wanted my jr. bm (which is my daughter) in champange. What color do I use for the girls shoes and what color should the men tux’s be? Or what should I change? Just help, pls!

    Thanks

    • stacey@favorideas

      Lady D,
You could have the guys in brown tuxes/ suits or if its a daytime wedding why not have them in taupe/brown. The girls could wear strappy silver heels.
      * some pics

Do a google image search on khaki groom
then brown tuxedo to see which one you like best. Khaki is for more daytime or semiformal/casual affairs.

  27. Zoe

    Hi there

I posted before about my wedding in October where I was thinking of putting the bridemaids in red but wanted the grooms party to wear brown suits. I was thinking that a cream sash around the waist in the bridesmaids dresses and then a cream waistcoat or something with the guys to break up the colours but I am getting lots of comments about brown suits and not that positive! I have attached my mood board but I was wondering if you have seen any other wedding with the guys wearing brown suits and did they look nice? do you think the red would work or is it too dark? any advice would be great.

    Thanks
    Zoe

  28. Chelsie

    Hello,

I am getting married in late march or early april of this year… my first thought was chocolate brown and turquoise for my wedding colors, but i also really like red and white roses for bouquets… will this clash terribly? also, is there a third color i can tie in really well to the chocolate and turquoise?

    • stacey@favorideas

      Chelsie,
If you use chocolate and turquoise, I would use red as my third color, if you add a fourth it will be to busy.
      * here is the colors with brown chairs.
Think about doing turquoise and brown as your main colors and add red florals. It looks beautiful! If your not fond of that think about just turquoise with red or brown with red/white or cream. it all depends on your venue as to which colors look best. If you have a link I woul dbe happy to take a look.

  29. Lula

Hello, I am planning a possible indoor wedding for July. My colors will be chocolate and turquoise. I’ve narrowed some searches in bridesmaids dresses to a chocolate mid length dress with turquoise sash around the waist. I plan to have the bridesmaids wear leis to celebrate my Polynesian heritage, which is where I may have the first issue. Should I go with an all white lei, turquoise or mixture of all? I plan to wear one as well. The men will wear all white and I’m considering having turquoise vests and a different style lei for them. Nothing is set yet, I including the decor. I want to have chocolate as an accent rather that have it the main color as it seems it would be too dark. If I am unable to find decor to match turquoise then I may have to choice baby blue instead. Thanks! Xoxo

  30. Vicky

    Hi,

I’m having a winter wedding.. 10th December 2011. my colour theme is chocolate brown with beige…also having gold around the place to match in with the colours… there will be a christmassy theme for the table pieces as i have got mini christmas trees from hobbycraft… anyone who decides to have a winter wedding, is buy your stuff in january as he sales are brilliant to get some bargins!!!! we are doing a lot ourselves to save money as well… happy wedding planning to all xx
