Planning an Autumn Theme? Find Your Unique Fall Wedding Style

Hoping to plan an autumn wedding that expresses your deepest desires and most personal visions for matrimony, but not sure where to start?

Not to worry — you have plenty of company. And this article will quickly help you on your way.

Finding your Personal Autumn Style

Many articles recommend starting your planning by picking your wedding colors. But how? Well, maybe you could just choose your favorite color (unless your fiancé happens to hate red), check your daily horoscope (oops! No color advice, dang!), or take a poll of your bridesmaids and see what they feel like wearing.

You could do any of these things, but they're likely to end up unsatisfactory ... because they won't express your inner vision for the wedding as a whole. So try this: try to find your wedding dress before you move on.

For many brides, there's only one wedding gown that sums up their deepest feelings about what kind of bride they are. They may not know it until they wear it, but when they do, the recognition is instant.

As often as not, this gown ends up communicating a distinct feeling that will help pull the rest of your wedding together. A beaded ivory gown in raw silk looks splendid with English cottage style flowers. A diamond-white A-line with a couture feel will look at home among modern colors and designs. But more than how it looks, focus on how it feels. Vintage? Queenly? Minimalist? Eclectic?

Where to Hold your Fall Spectacular

No matter what your style, one thing you're likely to share with all other Fall brides is a love of the outdoors. So, you might find your perfect setting in a vineyard, a park bristling with old oaks, a delightfully ramshackle New England barn, or a parent's backyard. But even if the reception takes place in an uptown loft, you'll want to capture the season's unique scents and colors wherever possible ... especially in the photos!

What Type of Fall Bride Are You?

Fall brides come in deliciously different flavors. Let's look at three that we'll call New England Classic, Regal and Contemporary (though of course you can mix and match).

New England Fall Style

If New England style describes you, you probably dream of white, steepled churches and fiery oak and maple leaves. Your wedding look is country casual, and your toolbox holds the natural materials of fall farmer's markets. Your bridesmaids might wear hunter green, apple red, ecru or umber gowns with long sashes and a big bow in back.

When it comes to flowers, your bouquet might sport dahlias, Leonidas roses, mini-callas in rust, gold and red, mini sunflowers, chrysanthemums, spider mums or gladiolas. You might also see woodsy accents like wheat or rye grass, hypericum berries, blackberries or heather. You might also have maple leaves wired right into your bouquet — a distinct and totally tasty look. Chances are, long ribbons dangle romantically from the bouquets.

But what about the cake? Perhaps you'll set out several homestyle flavors: carrot cake and spice cake, for example. Or, you might serve up a classic white confection with a waterfall of autumn-colored gum paste leaves or flowers.

As for decorating, New England brides have the best of all worlds. It's simple (and cheap!) to take spectacular fall materials and turn them into a stunning celebration. Hit up a farmer's market, and you've got corn stalks for posts and barn doors, bushels of apples to carve into floating candle holders or use as place card holders, grapevines for church door wreaths, and pumpkins and mini gourds to scatter along paths or stair steps (carve these with your monograms, or turn each pumpkin into a letter, such as L-O-V-E). Pumpkins also make wonderful vases for floral arrangements. Wishing trees, where guests write blessings and well-wishes for the future on paper leaves to tie to a 'tree', are popular features.

Other ideas: tuck a sprig of wheat into a linen napkin and tie with raffia for an elegant look. Clump pillars of vanilla or cinnamon-scented candles in strategic spots to treat your guests to autumn's scents. Serve colorful fruit punch and iced tea in big, old-fashioned canisters. Hand out sweetly nostalgic favors, like mini honey jars with a wooden dipper, or caramel apples.

Also, switch out leaves for summer's rose petals at every turn. For example, dress up the arch or chapel, pews and chair backs with leaf garlands, found at any craft store. Have your adorable flower girl scatter leaves down the aisle before you make your grand entrance. You can even decorate entire tabletops using loose leaves (real or silk) as a table runner, punctuated by romantic votives.

Regal Fall Style

If you're more of a Regal-style bride, your look could translate just as well to winter.

Your gown might have deep red detailing at the neckline, sash or train, and your bodice might involve gold embroidery. And your bridesmaids'? Crimson or claret, with a bit of sparkle worked in.

When it comes to flowers, you'll probably focus on sculptural red and white classics, such as roses and stephanotis, made even more formal with crystal bouquet picks. Or you might choose the eye-catching drama of red and white tulips.

As for the ("let them eat") cake, yours might be tall and white, with red roses or satin ribbons at the base, and monograms in the fondant or the topper. And likely as not, a towering chocolate fountain will draw guests like bees to honey in the corner.

When it comes to decorating, you'll probably stick close to the classics. Crisp white chair covers with red or crimson sashes set a stylish tone in your balllroom. Many of your centerpieces will probably be floral (and elaborate), but hurricane lamps filled with white pillar candles and dramatic red cranberries remind your guests of the season. Your favors might be pewter leaf ornaments in a bright red gift box.

Contemporary Fall Style

When it comes to tradition, a Contemporary bride usually winks. If this is you, your main hue might be chocolate brown with an offbeat accent, like purple, aqua or chartreuse. Or, your flowers might hint at fall, but consist of less conventional blooms. Your bridesmaids might don chic black gowns — which not only reportedly take off ten pounds for the camera, but (bonus!) serve as a backdrop to eye-popping bouquets. You're more likely to turn to metallics than autumn standards like orange and red.

Popular fall flowers for contemporary brides include peach and coral roses, gold and mango mini-callas, pincushion proteas or chocolate cosmos. You might also like bittersweet vines, and exotics like orchids and red anthuriums. And for extra interest, lemon leaves and eucalyptus, copper wire accents or bear grass wraps, and fiddleheads or feather collars. You also might use hints of lime green, such as button mums and chartreuse roses, or fuchsia in the form of roses and callas.

And your cake? It might be a complex creation turreted with chocolate curls or ruffles, framing layers of glistening red fruit, like cherries or raspberries. Or, a dark chocolate cake, or alternative desserts like pies or pumpkin cheesecake.

Finally, you could get pretty eclectic when it comes to decorating. There's really no telling, but guests might find humble burlap linens under pin-tucked copper table runners, complete with silk tassels. Your centerpieces might involve leaves, but in an unusual way (for example, silk leaves submerged in a modern clear canister, filled with water). You'll probably group enormous numbers of white candles and votives for a modern — yet completely autumn — look. Centerpieces might sneak in anything from miniature green apples to succulents with the flowers. Favors could be unbleached earth-friendly favor boxes filled with bright candy corn.

I’m am getting married october 16 2010 and am so in love with fall colors chocolate, burnt orange, and rusty red. I’m just not sure how to pull all of this together. I love the autumn colors of leaves. I’m thinking I should have some gold in there somewhere. How on earth will I put my bridal partys attire together and the groom is wanting to wear a black tux his fav color is purple help. :D

sandrea,
i am concerned there may be to many colors. would the groom wear a chocolate tux with eggplant or purple? the brown and eggplant/purple would be great with the fall colored bouquets. then turn around and put champagne/gold linens in the reception with fall colored flowers. can i see your venue? i would be better able to give a more solid idea of what it may need.
there is one idea i have that would simplify everything. have a simple plum and champagne wedding color scheme. since you love the colors of the fall leaves themselves then you could have one type of flower like vanilla white roses and add fall leaves to all your decor. this way he would get to wear his black tux with plum or eggplant vest. you could have the girls and groomsmen in black tux with champagne vest. it will pull in the gold touches. then in the reception have champagne linens with rich plum napkins and centerpieces featuring the white roses, ( you could add other colors here if you like too) or just containers filled with abundant fall leaves elegantly presented. in a mixture of tones like muted reds, oranges, mauves, golden yellows etc. like here…

Hi Ladies,
Nothing is final.. but we’re thinking “10 November 2012″ (kinda like 10,11,12) lol. Mostly because of school and finances.

Well I think I’ve finally narrowed down my colors to two color combos.. but am not sure if they go or not.

#1- Black, white, cafe with hints of gold and orange

#2- Black, white, cafe with hints of gold and red

I really want the guys in black suits because I don’t like the dark chocolate suits. Beige/tan ones are ok.. but they say more “office” than wedding to me. I like the color cafe a lot since I’m thinking of our wedding cake flavor being Tiramisu.. having a coffee bar and even coffee beans in a vase with a candle in it and rose petals around the vase for centerpieces.

Thoughts??

ashley, i think #2 would compliment the venue and the wedding vision you have. it would really bring out the coffee beans in the vases etc. one idea is in florals only why not use burnt orange and red. it will be gorgeous against the black and white.
*like here
* this is so perfect! here it incorporates all the colors. you could have the center, centerpieces in glass bowls or vases with the coffee beans.

Stacey, first of all, you are amazing. This is one of the best resources I’ve found. I’m having a really hard time picking my wedding colors. My big problem is that I love so many colors, and I love the way they look together. Our reception space is very versatile. I need some sort of theme or color scheme to hold this thing together, and so I don’t drive myself crazy. Our wedding is September 2010 — but I hate the traditional fall colors (deep reds, oranges, golds). I love the pink, orange, yellow combo — but I also love purples, blues, and greens and I love all of these colors when they’re pale AND when they are bright. Help!

Hi all!

I’m getting married Oct, 2010. I have chosen to do the fall themed wedding with Chocolate brown being the main color, with fall accent colors. I’m having troube deciding on my center pieces. I want to do tea light candles in a votive, and maybe a rusty pail bucket with an assortment of flowers for the center piece? The ceremony is outside, and the reception is inside. Is there a easy clever way to dress up the white chairs outside? I need some ideas! I’ve kind of hit a wall on how to piece everything together :( The Shenandoah Mill is my

cassie,
*look at this gorgeous bouquet!
*real wedding
*THIS IS PERFECT! buy up some pumpkins to line the aisle, you wont have to throw them away arrange to have someone give them away to kids, have extra on hand so the kids will have some to carve!!
*beauty of a cake
*pics

I love the rustic pails filled with flowers, scatter the tealights and mini pumpkins around pail. i didnt mention puttin flowers on the chairs themselves because of the style it is, the more rounded chairs have a problem with the decor sliding. it can be done, but takes extra support, to keep in place. i would place chair decor on aisle chairs only and use cascading fall colored ribbon, like crimson or burgundy and mix it will a small bouquet of flowers and hanging greenery( vinelike). place on chair side to aisle and attach where seat meets back. but where it wont be sit on and crushed. ground aisle decor would be simplest.
* here is some pumpkin centerpieces just in case
*more pumpkins
*carry the pumpkins onto your tables, these are really beautiful!! you could use the deeper colors of fall too!

NEED HELP WITH PLANNING MY BOUQUET. Not sure if I want roustic or modern. My wedding is 10-03-09. Centerpieces: small/medium size pumpkins carved out, filled with water, and floating candles. Also might add a small tin pail, chocolate brown ribbon around with jewel where ribbon comes together. Inside pail would be fail flowers like mums and sunflowers. I also will have small silk leaves as my table runners. Not having a favor but will have small champaign glasses on tables filled with Resses pieces mixed with peanuts. My dress is ivory while bridesmaids are wearing truffle. TAKING SUGGESTIONS. THANKS :peaceout:

The thing about the tin buckets as centerpieces is that my tables are real long(3 8 foot tables put together) and I could arrange bucket, pumpkin, bucket, pumpking, bucket spread out evenly. I think this sounds good but after reading other comments I’m started to think that might be to much. Taking any opinuins anyone might have.

Whendy,
the best way to see how it looks is have a trial run( if possible) just use a small table and try it out. you might be able to try a grouping too. mixing a tin pail with a few pumpkins set around it. but the way your thinking it sounds good. i would use a pail on a larger scale that way the pumpkins and pail wont be same size. make sure the florals in pails are abundant. this will give a lush look and then you can march the pumpkins down the table. the one thing that i would have to see is the leaves. i am wondering if you would be better at puttin gsilk leaves intermixed inthe florals and have grapevine trailing around and among the pails and pumpkins. ( the more narrow grapevine would be best. for your bouquet i would mix both. find a modern sleek flower and tie off with a rustic looking ribbon.
*example bouquet ( use modern callas for example, and add a loop of grapevine over top and tie with a sleek ribbon) or have curly willow stemming out of bouquet. it really depends on the type of dress you have.

This is my choice of venue. It was built in the 1920’s and as you will see in the pictures the house has rich dark wood and a Victorian style. Our wedding is also in October. My fiance and I are both artists and we are really leaning towards a contemporary fall feel without being too extravagent and overwhelming.

 GIRRRLLLLLLL…. I need help!

I am getting married next October too, and have chosen the same colors.

I am open to ideas too for the centerpieces…….the venue we have selected is the Westbury Manor. westburymanor.com

I hope we can pass some ideas off each other…..I was thinking of maybe a large pumpkin hollowed out with autumn flowers? or maybe small pumpkins to act has votive holders?

Anyone have any suggestions……… :?

My date is planned Oct 24 2009. My dress is ivory. I have 2 maids in vibrant orange and 2 in a soft yellow. They will be dressed every other. The tuxedos are a deep chocolate brown. Same basic colors in my bouquet although i did add a deep red color and regular daisies. Centerpieces I am debating on are baskets woven and made with real dark twigs very woodsy. I may put small battery operated lights in the basket with a bright colored mum. OR I am filling the baskets with small tree saplings guests can take home. I have another favor of small clay pots tied with wildflower seeds and filled with caramel popcorn. Hope this helps ;)

We’re just simple, down to earth folks…and we’re getting married on a very limited budget - so that we can try to have that dream of a honeymoon-

Getting married October-
Ideas that we have been discussing-and things that we plan on doing for our “Fall” wedding-

tying pine cones on the pews with ribbons instead of bows…
My boyfriend is going to cut a piece of wood from his farm-(he is a logger) for our cake to be placed on-and he will “finish” it so that is safe of course,
the maple branches in Mason Jars on the tables with raffia around them,
Mums at the front of the church for decorations-then donated to our church afterwards-

So I have an idea for table centerpieces….just looking for some feedback/ideas/ways to improve it!

(getting married 10.01.10)
I saw this idea in a magazine a little while back….
You take a medium-sized pumpkin, paint it either white, brown, red (whatever color you choose) and then stencils on some designs in a different color (flowers, etc.). I was going to place the pumpkin in the center of each table and surround the pumpkin w/ votive candles. NO FLOWERS! I’m not a flower kind of girl….

thoughts? should the pumpkins be placed on something so that they are a little higher up than the candles and the candles don’t cover them up?

amanda, just sit pumpkins on table not elevated and surround with candles. beautiful idea. think about adding mini pumpkins to the mix. like a large pumpkin and 2 small. always keep the number of items in odd and not even. it has a better appearance!

ashley,
celadon will look good but the only problem is it is a hard color for most brides to pull off so is burnt orange. i am betting red will be your best bet cause most skintones look great inthis color(use a deep red). for the favors, just carry their dress color into the ribbon. that would be beautiful. use the colors inthe bouquet agaisnt the red with assorted colored faux grapes it would be WOW!! i dont think i would choose the wine glasses for invites. why not choose the vineyard decor? it has all the right colors mixed with wine theme. think faux grapes mingling with grape leaves. have the flowers in fall colors( google image fall wedding bouquet). the best ideas i have found was google imaging vineyard wedding then vineyard wedding board. also google image grape wedding ( grapes would look so good on your invites) and can you imagine grapes spilling over the sides of a rustic metal urn? marry under a grapevine arch with grape leaves( which also turn colors in the fall so you would still get that nice fall color) and faux grapes cascading down?!?! you can even reuse these in decor inyour home after the wedding!! also google iamge grape theme wedding. let me know what ya think!

I was suppose to have a fall theme wedding this year, but my brother-in-law ended up being deployed to Iraq unexpectedly, so we decided to now have the wedding in March on my grandmothers birthday. The other problem I am finding is that I decided not to get married outside but in the Saint Francis Chapel at the Museum of Man in Balboa Park with the Reception at the Prado in Balboa Park, both are in San Diego. I would like to stick with the fall colors that I have chosen which are burnt orange, wine, espresso, and harvest gold. All Alfred Angelo colors in style 6455. Will these colors work? :?

yes it will work and beautifully, i might add! but instead of fall it will look tuscan, so if anyone asks you can tell them that!! or even vineyard. this is gonna be so gorgeous!i dont know what color you want to use for your linens. But if you want it warmer i would suggest keeping them gold or beige, but i white will make it look vibrant and happy, add lots of viney greenery to the mix. think also seeded greenery, which is stunning in arrangements.

I think it will still be pretty. The main thing I’m having trouble with is centerpieces! A friend of mine suggested just say the theme is “fall in love” - it’s a cheesy, but cute idea!

We are having a hard time on what her centerpieces will look like. She will have an intimate ceremony, white table cloths. Also, need help with bouquet colors. We want to to incorporate candles, dazzlers, mirrors, and fall items if possible. please help. thank you

hi rose,

i was thinking why not have fall colored centerpieces or cream colored or apricot colored roses nestled among maple leaves? it will be simple and elegant. also consider having maple branches in urns placed within and around the room. for bouquets consider this beauty(pic) actually you could do these colors. it would be very soft and romantic but seasonal would be breathtaking against navy. or you could have bouquets like the pic, with the bride carrying a white bouquet. and have the bouquet colors intertwined with a mix of deeper colors.

Rose:
Go to wedding websites like theknot.com and Brides.com - these websites allow you to try different color combos and they often suggests color combos that must people don’t think about doing together. I think a Navy Blue w/ a green apple color would look great (My fiance has a tie w/ that color combo and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!) Or possibly a Navy Blue w/ a purple (not a dark purple though) and champagne

Hi I’m getting married the first week of November of this year, I’m a little lost with colors, my wedding is set to be at 6pm at church and then after a banquethall. I’m a big fan of lavender, but also like green(jade) burnt orange and champange colors. What could you recommend me to use for the tables, the bridesmaid dresses and the flowers. I want something stylish and unique. Let me know if you have any ideas.

thank you,

yeli, i was unsure whether you wanted the lighter jade or darker, the closest pick i could find is in clover ( for the darker) at davids bridal.these are the colors i see with a champagne backdrop, and simple tangerine and aubergine centerpieces the lighter shades like the lavender can be in small areas like the cake etc.(as in pic) i wanted to find a way to incorporate all of these. i would keep the only in the dresses and let the other colors be for the decor. i will post the pics with both colors so you can see which you like. i thought if you added the aubergine in the mix, it would be fallish. also you can darken the orange in bouquet to a deeper shade and would be beautiful too.

yeli, here is the other combo with a lighter green dress color. the board pic i posted would be the main colors. forgot to mention the purple shades with the champagne as backdrop in previous link. if you want to add even more fall items, consider leaves. this will make it look like an enchanted forest in fall. if you dont care for all the colors i would with the lavender and purples (purple and gold link). plus google image aubergine wedding (the results are gorgeous!!)

Hello!
Me and my fiance are planning a fall wedding next year. Purple has always been my favorite color so we agreed on the colors: Victorian lilac and brown. My question/problem is: What should I have as my flowers? I am not a flower expert so i dont know what are traditional fall flowers and i dont know what would look nice with these colors. HELP!

Hey! I have a question and I have so many factors that play into the scenario that I need major help. I’m getting married 10/10/09 and I’m having a formal a.m. wedding. I’m wearing ivory and my fiance is wearing a gray morning coat tux. I have no idea what to do with my bridesmaids!! I want to stay with the fall colors without clashing with the gray and ivory. Also, one of my bridesmaids has bright orange hair so I need something that is becoming on her. btw, I’m not a pink person. any suggestions??

nikki, have her go to the bridal salon and have bm try on dresses, i think the brown and grey with ivory and autumn colored bouquets would work perfectly and i think it would be quite stunning!! i can’t find the post but a brown suit with a silvery grey vest and tie is stunning, its still in the grey family and not so different it wouldn’t blend. i promise it looks good!! classy!

* Autumn Elegance candle ( choose these type colors for flowers and tie with silvery grey ribbon) set these colors with silver cutlery and ivory and candlight on brown tablecloths and you have got a gorgeous wedding!!

* Yahoo Answers: Wedding Colors the compliment red hair?? Help please~?

hi, i am thinking something like earth tones. it will go great with grey afterall grey is a nuetral now. i think brown would be elegant, nothing in brighter color range. its a classic an can be worn again on lots of occasions,

* Color Week: Gray & Brown ( it would look great with vivid fall flowers set against it!!) have gm wear a rich cocoa brown with more of a silvery grey vest and tie!! i think it would be awesome, so rich looking!! if you dont like this then try putting her in a olive or sage green, another great color!! have guys in a darker grey tux, with the olive or sage ties and vest, would be fab!!

* Gray (and Orange): Reader Board #10

* Coco + Kelly Finalist! (gray, white, eggplant and touches of mocha)

( you might even try plum which goes amazing with grey, if its rich enough.

Go to David’s Bridal’s website. They have this program on their website that allows you to “dress” your wedding party and see what color combos look good. You can build your own wedding party (hair color, height, etc.) and try on differnet color dresses and styles……….just something to fool around with!
