Planning an Autumn Theme? Find Your Unique Fall Wedding Style

Hoping to plan an autumn wedding that expresses your deepest desires and most personal visions for matrimony, but not sure where to start?

Not to worry — you have plenty of company. And this article will quickly help you on your way.

Finding your Personal Autumn Style

Many articles recommend starting your planning by picking your wedding colors. But how? Well, maybe you could just choose your favorite color (unless your fiancé happens to hate red), check your daily horoscope (oops! No color advice, dang!), or take a poll of your bridesmaids and see what they feel like wearing.

You could do any of these things, but they're likely to end up unsatisfactory ... because they won't express your inner vision for the wedding as a whole. So try this: try to find your wedding dress before you move on.

For many brides, there's only one wedding gown that sums up their deepest feelings about what kind of bride they are. They may not know it until they wear it, but when they do, the recognition is instant.

As often as not, this gown ends up communicating a distinct feeling that will help pull the rest of your wedding together. A beaded ivory gown in raw silk looks splendid with English cottage style flowers. A diamond-white A-line with a couture feel will look at home among modern colors and designs. But more than how it looks, focus on how it feels. Vintage? Queenly? Minimalist? Eclectic?

Where to Hold your Fall Spectacular

No matter what your style, one thing you're likely to share with all other Fall brides is a love of the outdoors. So, you might find your perfect setting in a vineyard, a park bristling with old oaks, a delightfully ramshackle New England barn, or a parent's backyard. But even if the reception takes place in an uptown loft, you'll want to capture the season's unique scents and colors wherever possible ... especially in the photos!

What Type of Fall Bride Are You?

Fall brides come in deliciously different flavors. Let's look at three that we'll call New England Classic, Regal and Contemporary (though of course you can mix and match).

The New England Fall Bride

If New England style describes you, you probably dream of white, steepled churches and fiery oak and maple leaves. Your wedding look is country casual, and your toolbox holds the natural materials of fall farmer's markets. Your bridesmaids might wear hunter green, apple red, ecru or umber gowns with long sashes and a big bow in back.

When it comes to flowers, your bouquet might sport dahlias, Leonidas roses, mini-callas in rust, gold and red, mini sunflowers, chrysanthemums, spider mums or gladiolas. You might also see woodsy accents like wheat or rye grass, hypericum berries, blackberries or heather. You might also have maple leaves wired right into your bouquet — a distinct and totally tasty look. Chances are, long ribbons dangle romantically from the bouquets.

But what about the cake? Perhaps you'll set out several homestyle flavors: carrot cake and spice cake, for example. Or, you might serve up a classic white confection with a waterfall of autumn-colored gum paste leaves or flowers.

As for decorating, New England brides have the best of all worlds. It's simple (and cheap!) to take spectacular fall materials and turn them into a stunning celebration. Hit up a farmer's market, and you've got corn stalks for posts and barn doors, bushels of apples to carve into floating candle holders or use as place card holders, grapevines for church door wreaths, and pumpkins and mini gourds to scatter along paths or stair steps (carve these with your monograms, or turn each pumpkin into a letter, such as L-O-V-E). Pumpkins also make wonderful vases for floral arrangements. Wishing trees, where guests write blessings and well-wishes for the future on paper leaves to tie to a 'tree', are popular features.

Other ideas: tuck a sprig of wheat into a linen napkin and tie with raffia for an elegant look. Clump pillars of vanilla or cinnamon-scented candles in strategic spots to treat your guests to autumn's scents. Serve colorful fruit punch and iced tea in big, old-fashioned canisters. Hand out sweetly nostalgic favors, like mini honey jars with a wooden dipper, or caramel apples.

Also, switch out leaves for summer's rose petals at every turn. For example, dress up the arch or chapel, pews and chair backs with leaf garlands, found at any craft store. Have your adorable flower girl scatter leaves down the aisle before you make your grand entrance. You can even decorate entire tabletops using loose leaves (real or silk) as a table runner, punctuated by romantic votives.

The Regal Fall Bride

If you're more of a Regal-style bride, your look could translate just as well to winter.

Your gown might have deep red detailing at the neckline, sash or train, and your bodice might involve gold embroidery. And your bridesmaids'? Crimson or claret, with a bit of sparkle worked in.

When it comes to flowers, you'll probably focus on sculptural red and white classics, such as roses and stephanotis, made even more formal with crystal bouquet picks. Or you might choose the eye-catching drama of red and white tulips.

As for the ("let them eat") cake, yours might be tall and white, with red roses or satin ribbons at the base, and monograms in the fondant or the topper. And likely as not, a towering chocolate fountain will draw guests like bees to honey in the corner.

When it comes to decorating, you'll probably stick close to the classics. Crisp white chair covers with red or crimson sashes set a stylish tone in your balllroom. Many of your centerpieces will probably be floral (and elaborate), but hurricane lamps filled with white pillar candles and dramatic red cranberries remind your guests of the season. Your favors might be pewter leaf ornaments in a bright red gift box.

The Contemporary Fall Bride

When it comes to tradition, a Contemporary bride usually winks. If this is you, your main hue might be chocolate brown with an offbeat accent, like purple, aqua or chartreuse. Or, your flowers might hint at fall, but consist of less conventional blooms. Your bridesmaids might don chic black gowns — which not only reportedly take off ten pounds for the camera, but (bonus!) serve as a backdrop to eye-popping bouquets. You're more likely to turn to metallics than autumn standards like orange and red.

Popular fall flowers for contemporary brides include peach and coral roses, gold and mango mini-callas, pincushion proteas or chocolate cosmos. You might also like bittersweet vines, and exotics like orchids and red anthuriums. And for extra interest, lemon leaves and eucalyptus, copper wire accents or bear grass wraps, and fiddleheads or feather collars. You also might use hints of lime green, such as button mums and chartreuse roses, or fuchsia in the form of roses and callas.

And your cake? It might be a complex creation turreted with chocolate curls or ruffles, framing layers of glistening red fruit, like cherries or raspberries. Or, a dark chocolate cake, or alternative desserts like pies or pumpkin cheesecake.

Finally, you could get pretty eclectic when it comes to decorating. There's really no telling, but guests might find humble burlap linens under pin-tucked copper table runners, complete with silk tassels. Your centerpieces might involve leaves, but in an unusual way (for example, silk leaves submerged in a modern clear canister, filled with water). You'll probably group enormous numbers of white candles and votives for a modern — yet completely autumn — look. Centerpieces might sneak in anything from miniature green apples to succulents with the flowers. Favors could be unbleached earth-friendly favor boxes filled with bright candy corn.

We are doing a fall theme as well. We will have homemade barn wood boxes filled with flowers and fall foliage as center pieces for 8ft tables. For our favors: we have purchased tall 8oz jars with gold screw top lids that we will fill with a homemade granola. Just under the lip of the lid we will tie a piece of brown twine and hang a personalized tag with “Thank You” printed in a script font on one side and our names and the date on the other. OR we will hang a fall silk leaf from the twine and have a personalized sticker on the top or side of the jar. For our parents, grandparents, and wedding party we are purchasing leaf shaped keepsake boxes.

a bit of an inspirational brain freeze happening lol. We are getting married in the fall of 2013. I would like a fall theme wedding with the leaves and candles and lanterns etc… and my fiance likes the idea but he would also like to incorporate a fishing theme into the wedding as well. I have a few ideas but am having a problem figuring out how to merge the 2 ideas in decor….originally i wanted candles and lanterns as centrepieces…but that doesnt really work with fishing….HELP

    • stacey

      Kristin,
What you could do is have like a rustic fall wedding theme and mix in fishing baskets as centerpieces, except fill with fall leaves…
      More ideas..

These are fly fishing themed but will give an idea on how it can work. I just love love the idea of a vintage style fall fishing theme wedding. Those baskets etc. are wonderful. If he don;t like this, you can always add his fishing items the same way. Just look for older/vintage looking items. For invites have a fall tree with a fishing pole leaning next to it. You could also find wood fishing signs maybe on ebay. Scatter those about. Think bonfire with smores for guests, cider, etc.

      This is so pretty..

      Part 2…

( I love the River Runs Through It Theme! How Clever!)
Just keep it rustic looking, imagine having a fall picnic by a stream, you would use natural decor elements, hang or have “candle” lanterns in centerpiece, grooms cake in fishing theme, etc.

I am getting married August 18, 2012. I am currently looking at royal or cobalt blue and white. I chose these colors because you can’t go wrong with them. I think I need help.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Tai,
These are great colors together! And you are right, you can’t. But can i see your venue pic or link to see how it can best compliment the setting. Thanks!!

Hi. My fiance and I are planning a october wedding and were wondering if anyone had any tips on decorations and ideas for a backyard wedding.

    • stacey@favorideas

      Jessica,
Are you wanting a fall theme? If so what colors did you want to use?

  6. Mia

Hi. My wedding is in March 2011 and I have totally hit a blank when thinking of reception centerpieces. The dresses are apple red. I love tall vases and candles but can’t seem to find the “wow” factor. I also can’t seem to find flower arrangements for bouqets. I think I want them to carry white flowers with a black ribbon – nothing big just simple and pretty. I would like to carry mainly white with maybe a few small red flowers -possibly cascading. Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated! Thank you! Please let me know if you need any more information.

  7. Angie

Hello! I have written you before, and was inspired by a few of your ideas. My wedding will be at the Dutchess Manor. I have sent you the link before. What is your opinion if I do a wine theme? I was thinking, table linens in a deep red, (a wine red), ivory roses for centerpieces, the bridesmaids in black gowns with wine-colored accessories, and wine-colored roses with some ivory flowers as bouquets, my bouquet as ivory roses with some wine colored flowers, and the guys all in black tuxes with a wine color vest?
You sent me this link before: http://www.polyvore.com/fleur_de_lis_wedding/set?id=23886211

When I say “wine – color”, I guess I mean like a deep merlot or burgundy.

There is a cake picture of the black and white cake with red roses, which really inspired me! What are you thoughts on these other suggestions?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Angie,
After looking at your venue I think this would be perfect!! Name the tables after different wines. Put them in simple, elegnat picture frames with your centerpieces and have mini bottle wine favors.

  8. Mercy

    Hi,

I wrote you a few times. We were going to have a fall 2011 wedding but just recently found out we are expecting BABY NUMBER 2! We are having a fast yet elegant wedding in Mid March 2011. 100 adults only. I would love to still let my bridesmaids where their mocha gowns and plum purple sashes if that would look okay with the season. http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Strapless-Satin-Ballgown-with-Pick-up-and-Sash-81123_Bridal-Party-Features-Most-Popular-Bridesmaids Our event is going to be held at a place called Eques. http://www.equesevents.com White linens and white chair covers and sashes. Would you change the sash of the bridesmaids dresses? What color decor would you use for the tables other than candles that we already purchased? We are on a tight budget with the rush of things but I do not want to “down-grade” my appeal when people walk in. I may be sporting a belly but I still want people to remember the event and not just how I look! :0)

    Thanks for you help!
    Mercy

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      mercy,
I think the dresses you have chosen would be nice, What color of flowers are you using? I think pulling in shades of purples in the centerpieces would be beautiful on a mocha overlay. Overlays are not very expensive and the venue may provide them you would need to check. Another color that would seriously stand out in this venue is a black, mocha, white color scheme. Black sashes and accessories on mocha dress, black heels, guys in black, pulling in some black into the reception. When color is used to the right effect it has impact and there is no need for lots of decor. Think white and black programs tied with a great black and mocha ribbon. simple white and mocha ( they have a great mocha or beige colored rose) florals with the candles. This color scheme would be easier on the budget and easier to work with. Champagne and mocha is a fabulous color combo too. pair it with black tuxes, add a deep red floral. super super beautiful. Pull in champagne overlays, sashes, and deep red flowers. :D

  9. Stacey,

All of your ideas are awesome. I will be getting married, and having a reception at the Dutchess Manor. I tried to enclose the web address, hope it worked! ;)
My event will be on Nov. 5, 2011. I hope to have the ceremony outdoors, and the reception indoors. I liked the colors purple and ivory, but after looking at your website, I think I am more excited by eggplant and champagne. I think this compliments the venue nicely. What are your thoughts? Being that its an autumn wedding, I like either a wine or fall theme. I am having a lot of trouble picturing it altogether. I also thought I would like some DIY ideas with favors. I have no idea where to begin! Please give me some suggestions!!
    Thanks,
    Angie

THIS PAGE HAS HELPED SO MUCH!! We’re just getting started with our plans, and just at a year to go. October 2011. I’m very contemporary and modern and prefer black to brown. for the others I’m leaning towards a very deep red/burgandy with small pops of green(its my fav) with stark white. We want a fall theme with a focus on leaves (one of our first dates consisted on playing in a pile of leaves, and he proposed in the same spot only in the snow!) But I’m afraid it will look too rustic and fall festival-esque. So basically I’m struggling with keeping it bold/modern/minimalist with my colors and incorporating our personalities and histories with the season.

    Brides,
    A new fall board

  12. Stephanie

    Hi everyone,
My wedding date is October 9, 2011. I need advice on two things, First, is it ok to have only the wedding ceremony and no reception? Second I would like my colors to have a fall theme, I would like to orange (or a variation of) and fuschia, does that even sound like it could go together? What color should my bridemaids wear? HELP! I so confused.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Stephanie,
Apologies your post wasn’t answered. I hope you are still checking in. :D I would plan a reception of some kind even if it is more of a coffee and cake reception with a few nibbles like cookies etc.
      * check this out

Hi I’m really want some opinions on claret and burnt orange bridesmaid dresses. This is the dress I picked out. http://www.foreverbridals.com/gownpix.asp?Style=78207
The photo shows it in black and purple. I was going to do everything that was black in claret and the purple part burnt orange. I found matching burnt orange pearl earrings and necklace. That I think would look beautiful. How do you think this dress would look with those two colors? I’m having trouble making up my mind since I don’t get to see this actual combo in person. I have pieces of the fabric and I think they look good but just need some reassurance. Please help or give an opinion. Thanks!

  14. Gail

I’m getting married on Oct 16, 2010, second time around! I’ve planned a small wedding of 35 people. My dress is gold and I won’t have any bridesmaids. The venue has stone walls and wood floors . The tables will have long white tablecloths and chair covers in white. I like the fall theme but a friend has suggested that I stick to white and green theme. Can you suggest some flower centerpieces that wouldn’t be too expensive. I have some votive candles for each table (picture attached) that are antique gold. Can I add some fall color to the whole theme or should I stick to the white and green??…help!

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Gail,
I think an array of fall colors work in this setting. Youcould easily do fall leaves, it fits in the setting. Even add apples etc. The votive holders what size are they? you might could do urns of fall branches around the room too. Which I think would look amazing. How many votive holders do you have for each table?

      • Gail

Hi!, The votives are about 6″ high and I’ll have 6 per table. I`ve actually arranged to have centerpieces with white hydrangeas and yellow roses with orange centers but I also really like the idea of the fall branches around the room. Thanks very much for the suggestion. I think it will add some color and pick up on the Fall theme!

  15. Shawn Harris

Hi Stacey! We are actually renewing our vows on October 1, 2011 at Southern Exposure in Battle Creek Michigan. It will be an outdoor wedding at farm dating back to the 1800′s. The ceremony will take place outside with the reception indoors. I’m so excited. I had actually thought about doing Pink and Brown as my colors with myself wearing an ivory or cream colored dress with a brown sash & my 3 daughters wearing a pink and brown dresses with sashes. After reading this, now I feel my colors might not really be “Fall colors”. We are celebrating 14 years of marriage & I want it to be beautiful. Our favorite time of year is the Fall. So maybe cranberry orange and chocolate? I want to make daisy bouquets for myself & 8 and 10 year old and a kissing ball with daisies for my 4 year old. I’m so confused at the color scheme now…Thank you and I LOVE LOVE LOVE this website!

  16. Theresa

Hello I am getting married Oct 2010. I am having major confusion over my colors. I want my girls to wear navy blue or green. But I also want to incorporate the fall colors of Pumpkins and Fall Leaves. I can figure out how to make it work. Or what kind of centerpieces I would have. Do you have any suggestions? Help.

  17. Mercy

Hi, I am getting married Fall 2011. My bridesmaids dresses are mocha with deep purple belts that trail down their backs. What color would I have the men wear? (black with the purple vests or find tuxedo’s that are the same mocha color) I am doing leaves and tea lights along with string white lights as decorations. Also pumpklins and other fall things…would candied apples be a good idea for the favor or would that throw off the fall leave color?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

    • Stacey@Favor Ideas

      Mercy,
I compared all possibilites and liked chocolate tuxes with lighter mocha vest-purple boutonniere.

  18. Michele

Hi Stacey! Love the sight! =) I am planning my sister-in-law’s wedding and I am from Pennsylvania. The date is set for September, 2010. She has chosen the color Pistachio for her bridesmaids. She has always wanted this color since she was a little girl. The Groomsmen at this point are wearing black. What colors should I accent with for the bouquets, decorations, etc.? We don’t want it to look like a spring wedding. I have never planned a wedding before, so I need all the advice I can get! She is getting married in a church and the reception is in a beautiful 100 yr old indoor dance pavillion. She wants everything to be a traditional Italian wedding style. Thanks so much and God bless! =)

    • stacey

      Michele,
I think just white would be amazing with this. Could I get a look at the venue?

  19. Sara

I’m getting married Fall 2011. I’d like to start planning and need help. I would like an outside wedding with a reception indoors. I want Gerber daisies, but would like to incorporate my fiancés outdoorsy personality as well. We like to go hunting, fishing, and hiking. Would having Gerber daisies and some kind of wood accents like sticks, pine cones, etc be too much?
Also will autumn leaves on the table along with the daisies be too much also?

I don’t really want to include pumpkins.

    I like these

If I have a chocolate, red, and orange color scheme, is it okay have other colors of daisies?
Maybe red or orange dresses and have a variety of colors for the bridesmaids.

  20. Natalie

    Hi!

I am getting married in October 2010 because I love halloween. I am planning a harvest/Halloween themed wedding and I am planning on the decorations myself. What would be an inexpensive way to have my dream wedding without being too corny or too gothic?

    Thanks!

    Natalie

    Hi!
Our wedding is set for November 6th, 2010. We wanted a late fall wedding because we both like rich elegant colors. So far we both love deep red rose color and espresso/chocolate brown. As centerpieces we want tall branch displays with hanging red flowers and crystals. We are planning on having brown tuxes (and open about what color should go underneath). I have thought of dark red bridesmaids dresses, but I really would like to incorporate another color or two into the scheme. Do you have any suggestions? I don’t want too light of a color for the girls, where it washes them out, but something that still goes well with the brown tuxes, my ivory dress and the details of deep red. Thanks for your help!!

  22. Stephanie

Hi Stacey i am getting married in November at The lodge in Sonoma, CA. i wanted a spring wedding but due to current circumstances we are stuck with a fall wedding. i have no idea what colors to use, since i have always leaned towards spring colors like light purples and blues. the place is beautiful but with the bricks and it being fall i wanted to brighten it up. i am open to any suggestions for colors and flowers that will go well with the place. i am not having bm or gm, we want it to be simple and fun for everyone. thank you for your help!

  23. Skye

Hello! My sister just got engaged and they are planning an early Sep. wedding. They hope to have the reception in a large round barn that can be rented out near here. She mentioned wanting Red as her primary color, but didn’t like the idea of red and black or silver or white-so I suggested chocolate brown. Do you have any ideas as far as flowers or decorations? They are not glitzy people at all(obviously-having a reception in a barn). Any ideas would be great! What about centerpieces with clear containers full of brown candies (chocolates, m&ms, tootsie rolls…) with candles and red accents? Would that be dumb? Or maybe apples? Just needing some inspiration. Thank you.

  24. Chelcy

Hi everyone! I’m getting married in October of 2010 and my colors are a navy blue, burnt orange with accented chocolate brown and red. We are going for rustic but also formal in the same sence. I am trying to come up with ideas for decorations, we live in a small town so our church isn’t up to date decor wise. What are some good ways to bring the theme of the wedding into the church and recepcion as well (recepcion is at a seperate place). We have thought about using white and orange pumpkins, mums, and basic votive candles. Any Suggestions???
    Thanks
    Chelcy

    • stacey

      Chelcy,
Hi!, you wouldnt happen to have a pic so I could see the inside of the venue?

      • stacey

        Chelcy
I ran across this one. I was thinking for the blue you could add artificial blue berry garlands in the mix of the other colors. I am thinking a linen other than white to have as a background but seeing your venue would help me see what linens and decor would work best.
        * here it is

  25. Andira

I am going to get marride in the near future and my fiance to be wants to have a red and white wedding I dont know what time of the year these colors could go. Any suggestions?

  26. sandrea

I’m am getting married october 16 2010 and am so in love with fall colors chocolate, burnt orange, and rusty red. I’m just not sure how to pull all of this together. I love the autumn colors of leaves. I’m thinking I should have some gold in there somewhere. How on earth will I put my bridal partys attire together and the groom is wanting to wear a black tux his fav color is purple help. :D

    • stacey

      sandrea,
i am concerned there may be to many colors. would the groom wear a chocolate tux with eggplant or purple? the brown and eggplant/purple would be great with the fall colored bouquets. then turn around and put champagne/gold linens in the reception with fall colored flowers. can i see your venue? i would be better able to give a more solid idea of what it may need.
there is one idea i have that would simplify everything. have a simple plum and champagne wedding color scheme. since you love the colors of the fall leaves themselves then you could have one type of flower like vanilla white roses and add fall leaves to all your decor. this way he would get to wear his black tux with plum or eggplant vest. you could have the girls and groomsmen in black tux with champagne vest. it will pull in the gold touches. then in the reception have champagne linens with rich plum napkins and centerpieces featuring the white roses, ( you could add other colors here if you like too) or just containers filled with abundant fall leaves elegantly presented. in a mixture of tones like muted reds, oranges, mauves, golden yellows etc. like here…

      • stacey

        sandrea,
*Look at this!! you could have the groom in the black and plum or eggplant. the gm in classic black and white and girls in champagne. have thier bouquets a mix of fall colors like you see here. gorgeous and classic!!
        *real wedding
if you decide on all gm in same as groom, you could have girls in matching eggplant or plum. gold accessories.
        * another real wedding

    • Ali

You could have your maid of honor in one of the colors and alternate the other bridesmaid gowns. Also, you could tie in some purples with the flowers. Eggplant is a great fall color.

    • Kelly

Im also getting married 10-16-10. My colors are apple red with a champagne sash. I love the fall colors! not to sure what to do for centerpiece. and i am dipping caramel apple for favors..its so much fun to plan for the fall season.

  27. Ashley

    Hi Ladies,
Nothing is final.. but we’re thinking “10 November 2012″ (kinda like 10,11,12) lol. Mostly because of school and finances.

Well I think I’ve finally narrowed down my colors to two color combos.. but am not sure if they go or not.

#1- Black, white, cafe with hints of gold and orange

#2- Black, white, cafe with hints of gold and red

I really want the guys in black suits because I don’t like the dark chocolate suits. Beige/tan ones are ok.. but they say more “office” than wedding to me. I like the color cafe a lot since I’m thinking of our wedding cake flavor being Tiramisu.. having a coffee bar and even coffee beans in a vase with a candle in it and rose petals around the vase for centerpieces.

    Thoughts??

  28. AJ

Stacey, first of all, you are amazing. This is one of the best resources I’ve found. I’m having a really hard time picking my wedding colors. My big problem is that I love so many colors, and I love the way they look together. Our reception space is very versatile. I need some sort of theme or color scheme to hold this thing together, and so I don’t drive myself crazy. Our wedding is September 2010 — but I hate the traditional fall colors (deep reds, oranges, golds). I love the pink, orange, yellow combo — but I also love purples, blues, and greens and I love all of these colors when they’re pale AND when they are bright. Help!

    • stacey

      AJ,
thank you!! I appreciate that so much! :D You sound just like me, i love alot of colors and narrowing them down is hard. can i get a look at your reception space so i can see what would compliment it. then i would be able to give you some color combos that you might like. cant wait to hear from you! and cant wait to see a pic of the venue, i love versatile! it means you can run with several ideas that can work.
      * love this
      *ooh la la

        Stacey,
