Fields of Gold: Design a November Wedding Full of Natural Beauty

In many parts of the country — and in our storybook New England vision of the seasons — November's a funny month.

After all, it doesn't truly belong to autumn or winter. And as a period all its own, it poses a special challenge when it comes to designing a wedding that's informed by the natural world.

On the whole, Fall's flame-red oak leaves and pumpkin oranges are just too noisy for November. And that formal blanket of white we associate with winter, and pair with jewel tones in weddings? That's not quite right either.

True, this month might have its share of snow. But what most of us visualize is something more like this: fields of golden grasses, barely brushed at the top by the promise of snows to come. For those who love monochromatics, November's a rich visual feast without an ounce of excess.

So, if you want your November wedding to retain a seasonal feel, and not resort to fuchsias and oranges just for lack of options, here's some ideas to get you started.

Capturing the Colors

Bright white says "winter." Rustic says "fall." But neither of these are the perfect fit for November.

So, what does look gorgeous? Combining shiny and luxurious materials with the rustic. Skip the maple leaves and pine branches, but get busy with a mainly monochromatic landscape. Start with ivory, and progress through cream, wheat and gold to latte and mocha brown. This forms a beautiful basis that we all instinctively see as native to the season.

But don't cling too tightly to this palette, because a few accents will bring out its dimensions. So just barely hint at the season to come, by adding a touch of cranberry or hunter green, or the season we just left behind, with dollops of mango or pale green.

Feathered Finery

A beautiful ivory gown in Peau de soie satin sets the stage for the rest of your palette. Adventurous, yet picture-perfect fascinators or hairpins that weave in cream-colored feathers with the look of just-blown cotton add a powerful dash of seasonal romance.

The groom will make a perfect match in a mocha or latte-colored vest and tie, with a boutonniere that combines a single ivory rose with ryegrass or seed pods. As for bridesmaids, they'll look stunning in reds or toned-down browns, like cranberry, mocha or cinnamon.

Pre-Winter Eats

The rich and filling foods of winter are a great match for the November wedding. Serve a tangy cranberry margarita as your signature drink. With dinner, have the waitstaff pour golden late-season wines, like Gewurztraminers and Rieslings. And with the cake, a special ice wine will perfectly set off its sweetness.

Post-Fall Florals

Ivory hydrangeas are the ideal blooms for November weddings. But don't stick too close your monochromatic scheme, here; florals are a perfect place to sneak in accents. Hint at fall with orange-colored Leonidas roses and mango callas, dried grasses, fiddleheads or bittersweet vines. Your golds will look all more golden in contrast.

A Delicate Balance: Tables

While the perfect November table takes some of its character from nature, the foundation should be pure luxury. Bypass those ordinary, too-white linens for beautifully patterned damasks (don't forget the napkins!) in ivory and cream. Give the room a little more interest by dressing up a portion of your chairs in gold sashes, and some in mocha or copper.

But against all this opulence, add back a bit of nature: a spring of dried wheat in each napkin, or gold-painted pears or apples on a tray.

Golden Beginnings: Centerpieces

Hardy fruit like apples or pears, spray-painted gold, make stunning eye candy for November weddings. Combine them with gold ball ornaments, both matte and shiny. Pile on a cake tray, or into clear eiffel vases for the start of the stunning centerpiece. Cake tray? Weave in a few classic blooms, like mango and ivory mini-callas or peach-colored roses, plus some gorgeous trailing amaranthus in burgundy or green. Eiffel vases? Add in curly willow or birch branches for height.

Pull up a Chair ...

Every bride is bound to bring something different (and fascinating!) to November's delicate balance between dramatically-different seasons. Tell us what colors, table ideas and inspirations you've hit on so far.

Immaculata,
it depends on the venue. if i could see a picture of the venue i could narrow down colors. another option, unless she only wanted a 2 color scheme. Is use wine, purple, and gold. it makes for a beautiful scheme.
*pics
*beautiful pics
*more pics and boards

this is how i would pick. for something more holiday looking choose the wine and gold.
for something a little less traditional choose the purple and gold.
also whatever the bm would look best in is a way to narrow it down. i do love both color schemes, if it were me i would combine them all.
*here is all 3 colors ( note: i had to put in red to pull up wine, burgundy, or maroon)

My friend is getting married next year (2010) and we are just starting the planning. She is not sure what colors to go with and I would like to help her. She was thinking something with green. Then she also had the idea of a silver and white color scheme. I was thinking maybe hunter green/gold or hunter green/silver. Please give me ideas so I can help my friend!!!

lynn,
you can certainly go with a butterfly theme in november. do you have your venue yet?

*real wedding ( this would work for a november wedding due to the colors being a little deeper, think more of eggplant and sage green.

erica,
since the bm dont want to wear brown might i suggest navy blue or black. i think blues and ivory will be perfect. i was thinking you could have a monochromatic blue wedding. different shades of blue from light to dark. it would be simple, easy to do, your fh would love you for it, since your not using red. ot a black ivory and blue wedding. see how your bm feel about wearing dark blue. it has the same classy appeal as black only softer. and it is perfect for all figures, just like the color black.

if your wanting to add a little more fall to this scheme why not use a combo of blue, copper, and ivory. it is a beautiful combo that is perfect for this time of the year.
*navy and copper wedding color scheme ( okay i am in LOVE with this color scheme, just use simple ivory roses for the only flower with this wedding, how is that for easy!! you can also add fall leaves or any one of these fall items to the florals, such as branches, curly willow, acorns, pinecones, just anything youd wan to add, rather not?!? then just use the simple ivory roses through out!!)

loving your color scheme! it will be absolutely perfect!

*Inspiration Board # 64: Light Green & Chocolate Brown
consider chrysanthemums or dahlias for fall. they will give the best bang for the buck and come in an array of colors. google image fall wedding. you may want to check rose prices as well in bulk you may get quite the deal!!

*omg!! bouquet

*Full of Fall ( i thought you might love this! another idea is take cue from this wedding and use bi color roses (orange and yellow mix) that way you could stick with one flower in single color and add foliage to florals , would make it easy and low fuss while still giving you the look you want, you could keep all other florals low key and amp up the bouquets ex: loris flowers link)

I am having my wedding November 7th. I am sure I have the colors picked out (Latte and Chocolate Truffle). I will be wwearing either an all ivory colored dress or 2 toned Ivory/Champagne dress. Still not sure yet! I’m thinking of having my matron of honor wear the latte colored dress while my bridesmaids wear chocolate truffle. Should I incorporate sahes/ribbons with their dresses? Also what should my flower girls dresses be like? I’m also having trouble with what I want my bouquet to be as far as colors and types of flowers. I’m not sure what would go good with the brown color scheme. And last, what should the groom and groomsmen and best man wear! Help please! Thank you!

susie,
can you tell me what your venue colors are? i can probably pull another color from it that would compliment. i was actually thinking red. the sashes will look great and the flowergirl needs to be in another color. otherwise it will all look dull. you need some pop of color. the guys will not like brown,i would ask them though. if they dont then put them in simple black tuxes with brown or champagne vest and tie. guys look best simple and classic when you have a elegant color scheme. another color that i just love!! is mint green. google image chocolate wedding board and also chocolate and champagne wedding board. it will give ya some ideas. then go to the knot ( link is below) check out other colors and details.

Stacy,

I was thinking burgundy or brown with ivory. I’m wearing a white dress. For the bouquets I’m looking at lillys, as they are my favorite flowers. I was thinking possibly red and white for the table? The reception is going to be held at a county style resturant/reception hall. We want our wedding to be relaxed and fun with the open bar! aslo what about mothers dresses? could the mothers or my sister (only one in wedding) wear black? :thankyou:

Cory, what would you think about using a black and white gingham that is country? i am telling you, this is so pretty!! i never thought gingham could look like this!

*Inspiration Monday: Preppy Secret Garden

*Reception Decor

*Kate & Scott in Bryn Athyn, PA( here is the entire wedding to the gingham table)

burgundy flowers would look so good agaisnt this simply tied with natural twine, but enough but not to much that it could be seen well on the bouquet. this is where i would tie inthe natural browns.

cory, if the black dont work with the venue, then dont use it in the wedding. stick to burgundy brown and white. i think with this, it might be a little much if you add black with brown burgundy and white. it might be to busy and you will want it to flow. what color cloths are the reception hall? will they allow you to bring in your own table covers? if all they have is white then add a gingham runner. brown and white gingham would give same effect as black and white. with burgundy flowers it would be so beautiful. just make sure you use same colored vases like they did above for a simple elegant effect. note: my daughter and I was looking at colors for my grandkids room it is in country. we put the 2 colors red and burgundy together and it doesnt work that great. stick to a burgundy wine or a burgundy red. i would go with the burgundy-red color.

cory, great color scheme for anytime! this is what i would do. have guys in classic black suits or tux. girls in classic black wear again dresses with great strappy heels. add a mix of blues in bouquets ranging from light to dark, so it will liven it up. in the reception have simple ivory and black tables. add your blue on the cake, favors, etc. i would be careful here and if you want to be on the safe side so it wont look to dark which wont be very lively if it does. i would choose another shade of blue which would work out perfectly!! google image blue and black wedding then blue and black wedding board also google image aqua and black wedding ( this looks really good!)

to reflect me best as possible I want my dress to be black and white (pretty even in the amount, my whole wadrobe is black) with some accents of red. I want my brides maids in red and black with accents of white. The wedding is outside in my parents 1/2 arce lawn. I was thinking silver, white, red and black, mostly white with accents of black and red with silver accenting the centre pieces. I’m young, 22 and I’ve never really been to a weddng before expect as a very young child 4-6 so I will appriciate any and all insight to ettiquet and things about weddings.

( thiis would be perfect outdoors, it has that garden type vibe my fave!! put white paper lanterns in reception area for decor idea)

* clipaj’s Red Wedding

* elegant outdoor wedding done in black and white with a bold accent of fresh red roses.

let the silver be in the jewelry, platters, silverware, containers, etc.instead of an actual part of the color scheme. concentrate on the all white with accents of red/black. if you need anymore help please let me know!! i would love to do what i can!! :D

Linz, hi, put brown dresses, with red bouquets, tied with golden fallish ribbon.or brown ribbon, have bm wear gold accessories.keep gold to bits like gold wedding cakewith base full of lush red roses, the jewelry, use gorgeous clear glass and gold etched votive holders on brown tablecloths with lush red roses and grapevine. find amazing pattern ribbons with touches of gold thread in it. keep it simple. do the decor in grapevines and greenery with red flowers, have candlelight. have guys in brown and cream. red bout. i saw a wedding once where the ceremony was done in grapevine dripping with red roses, branches were placed in clear glass urns on both sides of alter and aisle had wrought iron candleabras it was sooo goregous, you could follow suit, and add touches of gold here and there and it would be so amazing!! not deep gold but a champagne gold would work better or a light antique gold. afraid depper gold will look holidayish. hope this helps, you know colin cowie said its easier on budget and planning by picking 1 color in 1 type flower and use it in masses, i think this is the perfect time for that!! have fun!!

hi vhinnie, there are lots of colors for this time of year. all beautiful!! let’s start with some fave colors or special places even a hobby to build from. if your not wanting a theme then just go with a color. what’s amazing, i think, is one type flower in one color and used in masses like colin cowie suggests, its fail proof!! do want bold colors? or neutral? simple or more upscale? what type of personalities do you have? this helps narrow down things. also look into your home and closet to see what style you lean too, and colors. this is the best reflection of who you are.

* A White Wedding inspiration board (style me pretty)

i don’t know why a white scheme screaming at me for you but it is!! simple and easy!! that way your bm can choose a color that they love without being stuck to a certain color and one that compliments the venue.! which i love!! also to make it more fallish i think using rust or bronze colored urns filled with white dahlias or chrysanthemums or hydrangeas (popular) and roses, overflowing fall leaves 9this is your pops of color and a few well placed fall branches, i think hanging crystals on the arch in the centerpieces and in the bouquets would finish off the look! all this against white tablecloths, if not white use a palette of gold and cream with rust containers and greenery with elegant fall leaves.( DONT WORRY IF THE WHITE FLOWERS HAVE A TINGE OF COLOR THAT WOULD ACTUALLY BE PERFECT!!) usually fall weddings are traditionally rustic, this way you have both. i think i would choose a colored dress for the bm to add a touch of color and put a pop of color in the cake and you bouquet in ribbon or flowers. not to much but just enough!!

* Tiffany’s Reader Inspiration Board: Orange, Raspberry & Brown
( this is where the real color i am thinking will come in, the food, have assorted fall food, like caramel apples, etc) think about a spice cake for your wedding cake. serve hot cocoa (if your in a cooler climate) get married under a arch of fall leaves with a few white or cream flowers intertwined. pew markers have beautiful ribbons puddling to the floor again simple and elegant. candlelight. unless outdoors in daytime.i am envisioning this wedding to be about you and the groom and attention to details like leaves with names written in gold hanging on branches for place cards. if not that then beautiful ribbons with tags. or this… it is sooo simple, i love these colors as well!!

also wanted to give you colored schemes to see what you liked!! good luck!!

Len - Something creamy and soft (whatever your skin color dictates) You might even go with a gold or champagne satin or charmeuse. Most important - make it comfortable so you don’t have to tug or constantly check to see if its slipping or twisting. If it’s not formal you might like a tea length rather than floor length.
I don’t know how young you look so be mindful of decollete. Congratulations!

My dress is a dark ivory color and the bridesmaids dresses are truffle with an ivory sash. They are having blue hygrangeas as their bouquets. Different, but still classy. Just a few ideas :D
