A Rustic Country Wedding

Want a country-style wedding with rusticity and charm by the bucketful? Envisioning a glorious ride for two around the hayfield? See yourself gliding down the aisle in a fresh-as-summer cotton eyelet gown?

Then you've found the right place to help you pull off that special event you've always dreamed of!

Back to the Land

Start with a palette of earthy tones: yellows and golds, tans and umbers, sage and russet, celadon and cinnamon.

Then, try building the theme around your favorite rustic flower (like sunflowers, black-eyed susans or daisies), or a carefree member of the insect world, such as bees, butterflies or dragonflies.

For a venue, try a cornfield or a wheatfield, barn or cabin. Tents can travel to all kinds of charming spots. Call around for camps and lodges that lightly booked and eager for business (though be aware that really remote locales may pose challenges for grandparents in the Lincoln Town Car ... not to mention tricky logistics involving electricity, catering, DJs and so on).

A Touch of Country

Fancy up wedding arches, rafters and other focal spots with branches, bundles of corn stalks and sheaves of wheat. If you're lucky enough to be holding your event in a barn or a lodge, wrap any rafters and pillars in elegant twinkle lights.

More great accents: ears of dried corn, grapevine wreaths, hanging lanterns, and gourds and pumpkins (carve out your monogram, then give them some glow with a votive or a battery-powered light).

To jazz up personal focal points like favors and place settings, start with raffia ties and cinnamon sticks, individual wheat stalks or lavender springs, or Mason jars, burlap bags and small pots of jam or honey.

Country-Style Centerpieces

It's simple to set the table with a little down-home glory. Candles are inherently rustic, so start there: tealights floating in water-filled mason jars, for example. Or tuck pillar candles into terra cotta pots, or place in glass cylinders filled with popcorn, dried peas or coffee beans.

Casual flowers make a big, joyous statement at a reasonable price. Try massing cheerful sunflowers in galvanized pails or watering cans. (You can even use a sunflower's enormous, friendly face as your ring pillow.) Or instead of sunflowers, try sprays of shasta daisies, lupine and viburnum mixed in with small green apples wired to birch branches, or stuck to dowels. Another popular choice: group colorful Gerber daisies into simple mason jars.

Speaking of birch branches, elegant bare-branch centerpieces can be set in any pot and anchored with Quik-Crete for sturdiness. They look especially lovely when lit with hanging votives. Then, warm up those dark corners and windowsills with evocative punched tin lanterns.

More Ways to Make it Country

Give your guest an adorable first impression by hanging escort cards from wooden clothespins on a clothesline strung near the entrance.

Want some drama when it's time to walk back down the aisle as husband and wife? Equip your best men with the goods to create an arch of pitchforks!

Finally, once it's time to eat, dress up the chair backs at the sweetheart table with dramatic sheaves of wheat tied off with russet ribbons or roses. And if your main meal's held outside, you could set the stage with homey touches like buffet or serving tables made from planks set on hay bales and sawhorses. As for the guests, set up picnic-style seating with checkered, gingham or eyelet linens.

Galvanized washtubs look gorgeous filled with ice and drinks in vintage-style bottles (think: Stewart's Sodas — and ask your local suppliers about their best-tasting microbrews.) Don't forget the oversized jars filled with fresh iced tea and cold apple cider.

Treat your guests to home-cooked soul food like pot roast and pulled pork, fritters and cornbread, apple cider donuts and fruit pies.

As for cake, try any of the Autumn-style flavors on for size (spice or carrot, apple or pumpkin ...). Decorate with your favorite fresh flowers, making sure they're unsprayed and organic.

My furture husband and i were both in rodeo at a younder age and showed animels at the fair. we wanted to add a lil of the western flar into out wedding but still have it very elegant and romantic! our colors are black and white with fushia pink roses! help I was thinking my black favor that are like mini cowboy hats but how could i add white and pink in there?? (table cloths are going to be zebra!:)

Joni,
just add some pink and white printed ( elegant country looking ribbon) on the favors. i wasnt sure where you wanted the pink and white, did you mean on the table? if so, i would just have white napkins tied with a pink ribbon and/or have pink and white floral centerpieces on the zebra table linens. that would pull in the pink and white very nicely. it would pop! another idea is to have the zebra linens, pink floral centerpieces( consider rustic containers painted white), white napkins tied with twine add a western charm to the napkins at each setting.

Off the top of my head, I’d say incorporate gingham.
Red and white checks on the white flowers, black and white on the red roses. Use gingham ribbon on the cake and put a ginghame table cloth on the guest book table.

some gingham wedding invitations listed on the web, too.

hi nancy! I’m also planning a country wedding, in june 2010. we have full run of a friend’s house and property, but everything will take place outside. since her home is in the country, i’m going to flow with that idea. we’re going to have the ceremony in the yard beside a tree, and i was thinking of creating my own arch using twigs woven into lattice panels (have you seen “The Proposal” with sandra bullock? only i will replace string lights with something like mother-of-pearl bead strings, since the sun will still be out). also, we are on a tight budget and i was concerned about the cost of renting chairs, until our friend suggested using hay bales! i love the idea; we will have 1 or 2 rows of chairs in the front for mothers/fathers, and also the elderly who may be too uncomfortable sitting on a haystack. those chairs will have the backs covered with satin material in our colors. then, so nobody gets their pretty clothes dirty, we’re going to cover the top of each haystack with a checkered fabric (tucking the fabric under the bale wires so it doesn’t slip off). i think even if i hit a wedding lottery i would still use this economical idea…you may rent one chair for $4-5, or buy a bale of hay for that and seat 2-3 people on each one! plus it will strike a great balance between casual and elegant, and set that country theme right away. then dress up the aisles with bouquets of flowers or pretty ribbons tied onto posts set beside each haystack, or even attach right onto the haystack. i’m going to drape off the outside aisles with flowers on posts and then drape some white chain from post to post (i found 2 rolls of this chain laying around the house the other day; get creative! use a really thick rustic rope with ribbon or beads twirled around it, cut sheer fabrics into strips and drape from post to post, whatever inspires you!). you can even buy sheperd hooks and hang flowers, old lanterns, or potted flowers, but that can get expensive. throw down a runner and scatter some petals and i think it will look beautiful! then we’ll have dinner, and decorating the tables is another great opportunity to bring in country elements; i found these adorable mini-haystacks to use as centerpieces. (fall is ending and now is the PERFECT time to find rustic decor on clearance!) not sure what we’re going to dress them up with yet…probably flowers, maybe i can find confetti in a western theme, old glass lanterns, etc…but i’m also going to put pillar candles everywhere. in order to block the wind from blowing them out, put them in glass containers (vases, hurricane lamps, old mason jars will be GREAT for a country theme…any of these can be found at thrift stores and flea markets. and don’t worry about matching them all! different shapes and colors will only add to the rustic effect). then we’ll open up the dance floor (a little square concrete patio ;) ) and when it gets dark…a bonfire! which means seating around the fire will be taken care of after getting a few of those big strong cowboys to move the haystacks we used in the ceremony! ;)
here’s something very important for a country wedding…COUNTRY MUSIC! it doesn’t have to be all country music, but if you really want the effect to sink in, ask your dj to play mostly country songs (then switch it up during dance time). if you can’t afford a dj, buy a pack of blank cds and burn your own tracks (make sure you test them IN THE CD PLAYER YOU WILL USE AT YOUR WEDDING to make sure they work properly). if worse comes to worse…tune in a country radio station and take advantage of commercial time to have your toasts, speeches, etc.
keep a few things in mind…if you want a country wedding, have it in the country! trying to turn a rented park building or a yard in suburbia into “the country” will leave you scrambling to get the right effect, and might even start to look tacky. it’s awesome that you have an old workshop to hang out in…more than likely it’s already rustic-looking, so all you need are the pretty decorations. also, if you’re in the country, especially an outdoor wedding, don’t fight the natural colors around you! my outdoor june wedding will mean lots of greenery, blue sky, blooming flowers, etc…so having a blue and green color scheme will be great. i personally always dreamed of a red/white/black scheme myself–it can work beautifully for you! try working green into your color scheme with things like extra leaves in your bouquets, green ribbons tied to the aisle posts, etc…that way your wedding will blend naturally with the setting.
i’m sure by now it’s obvious that i’m pumped for a country wedding, what with the way i rambled on about it. but i hope it gives you ideas and inspirations of your own, too!

Our wedding is on a friends farm in what he calls an arbor (I didn’t know what that was until I saw it). He is actually decorating the arbor with vines and shrubbery as a memorial for a long time worker. Since he is letting us use it for free, we are donating money to the memorial to help (and because we can’t just use it for free). In front of the arbor is a large sand area for horse jumping and we plan to use that area for a dance floor and a bounce house for the kiddos. Does anyone have any ideas for flooring? I’ve looked up some websites in my area and it is so expensive. I’m thinking with all the creative minds on this page there has to be a brilliant idea lurking. :)

Xtina,
you can always get plyboard and then buy self adhesive laminate, another idea i have seen is using huge rugs.
*diy dance floor
if there was a way to get around having the dance floor on the sand, you could supply cheap summer pails and shovels and let the kids play in that area. just set the bounce house to the side. or you can set it on a sand portion itself, when they slide they will fall in the sand. that way you can save expense from renting or building a floor and have them dance on a designated area on the grass. i just read you cant build a dance floor on top of sand because it is not a hard, level surface. :meh:

Check out the rental shops near you, see if there
website has a listing for “portable dance floor”.
Sometimes they’re rented in 3×3 foot sections
(which is a pain, actually), but some places have
1 section large enough for a medium sized wedding.
Make sure if you rent one, if the price includes set up
and knock-down in the price.

I want a very classy look and nothing tacky, i am a young designer so i know that there is a way to incorporate my own taste with the interests of my soon to be husband’s only im having a hard time getting a jump start on design ideas. Ive seen a twig and leaf type of centerpiece with diamond or crystal strands draped on them, but didnt know for sure if i wanted to go in that direction? Any ideas?

hi amy! my fiance is a hunter. my sister’s wedding a few years ago was held at my parent’s farm, with the reception in the barn. my dad is always finding deer antlers out in the fields, and he always pics them up. for my sister’s wedding, her and my mom made a chandelere with the antlers and white x-mas lights. i am getting married in september and having it at my parent’s as well. we r keeping the chandelere and may make another one cuz my dad has found more. we will probably hang up lanterns for lights, and possibly get oranga, yellow, and/or red light bulbs to replace w/the regular light bulbs.

Hi everyone! I am back once again with some ????. I am having a rustic country style themed wedding…no horses and cowboy stuff but old fashioned style. We are thinking of the colors watermelon(or some pink shade close to that) and black and white. I have come across the idea for my ring bearer to carry a nest instead of a pillow, is this crazy?? I also want to get a piece of wood for the reception so that my guests can carve their names in it. We can then hang this in our new home…I am unsure of the type of wood to use though. (I saw this on the movie Here On Earth.) What are your opinions of these ideas??

I think the nest thing is fine, but if you’re having a
flowergirl, consider having her carry a basket with
raffia or vines, that looks like a nest, then have
flowers coming out the top. I’ve never heard of the
carving thing before, what would they use to carve
there names with? I’d just be afraid that someone
would hurt themselves. I’d be intersted to know how it
turns out.

My fiance and I are having a rustic wedding next year. For our guestbook we are getting a piece of wood and I’m burning a heart with our initials in it. I will then have everyone sign with marker or pencil and I will trace their signatures and notes with the wood burning tool. I’ve never done this before but I used to work at a craft store and everyone said it was pretty easy.

Hey Everybody,

I am getting married next September and am having a country themed wedding. My finace and I are big horseback riders and he is into roping. We are having the reception and the barn we are building right now. It is going to be beautiful with a red roof. My colors are going to be brown, red, and yellow, with the bridesmaids wearing brown and red and yellow flowers. But I need other ideas for decorating the reception and everything else haha. Any help is appreciated.

I know I have mentioned them before . . . but this wedding
screams out for rope wreaths! Are ropers the ones who
win belt buckles? Sorry, I’m a city girl! If they are, you
could do the top layer of your cake with a belt, and have
a “buckle” with your monogram, initials, or names on it.
Or maybe you could make a customized “brand” for the wedding
and put it on your cake, thank you cards, etc. Also, I love
pinto cakes (black and white), the kind that look like a cow or
a pinto horse. Good luck!

I’m looking for a few ideas for flowers and decor for inside for a September wedding on a strawberry/pumpkin farm. My bridesmaids are wearing black and flowergirls are wearing black and white. The ceremony will be outside beside the pumpkin patch with hay bales for seating. We are using straw and pumpkins as decor for outside. The scenery will probably be still mostly green. What colour scheme will go best for this? I was also thinking of having caramel sliced apples instead of wedding cake. I also need an idea for favours.

leah,
i would actually have a spice cake with cream cheese icing or pies, and have the caramel apples for favors or a bag of roasted peanuts. i would go with a simple white green and yellow color scheme. or just white and green that way all the decor and you all will stand out. chrysanthemums would be my first choice along with roses etc. like in last board i posted. actually you could add light orange inthe mix. but make sure your bm carry white green and yellow. not the orange flowers. so it wont look halloweenish.

Consider using those small gourds that look like pumpkins
as placecards . . . since black is one of your colors, get a thin
sharpie marker and have someone with nice handwriting write
the names of your guests on each “mini-pumpkin”. . .
you could attach small thank you tags to the stems with
raffia. Consider small bottles of maple syrup or small jars of pumpkin butter or jars of strawberry preserves as favors.
Why not have a sweet table or a dessert table that includes
a small wedding cake, maybe some pumpkin muffins or
mini-pumpkin pies, and strawberry short-cake? Or have
wedding cake and a sweet table later in the evening with
coffee, so everyone has a chance to have food and coffee
before driving home. How about cider (NOT the hard kind!!)
and doughnuts? As far as flowers, why not use baskets
with black and white flowers, some greenery, and if you like,
add a pumpkin orange bow? Or black and white pomander
(kissing ball) with a pumpkin orange ribbon. I would stick with
a spicey-orange or burnt-orange, as opposeed to a halloween,
bright orange.

Hi! I am getting married July of 2010. My colors are watermelon, black, and white. I love the rustic country theme and was wondering how to incorporate it into my wedding and reception. I am getting married at local park under a gazebo with a pond in the background. The reception is at the fairgrounds in the 4H bldg. My bridesmaids are wearing watermelon colored dresses. I am not sure the color is the best choice for the theme, but my home and taste reflect it greatly! Any help is greatly needed. Thanks to all of you!!

Obviously, you have to have a watermelon basket at the reception. Also, consider using watermelon vases . . . maybe not as centerpieces, but on your buffett table or another accent table. For decorating gazebos, I have 2 suggestions:

1) DO NOT put tulle or fabric around the top of the gazebo . . . one good gust of wind can leave it hanging in front of your face during the ceremony. Instead wrap it around the BOTTOM near the railings.

2)If you are using candles, consider the battery operated kind or put candles in large, deep jars
so the wind doesn’t blow them out. An easy way to decorate around the gazebo is to buy shepherds hooks and hang kissing balls on them, wrapping them around the hook twice (yes, because of the wind!). The size of the hook depends on the height of the gazebo . . . they should be seen by the guests who are sitting, but not so high as to distract from the bride and groom. Don’t fight with Mother Nature, you can’t win . . . let the pond be your biggest decoration.

Thank you soooo much for your ideas, they are helpful. I was considering using the shephards hooks for the aisle markers and hang lanterns or something holding flowers. That was great to see you suggest that!! The pond will be fabulous for decoration. I was mainly concerned about how to decorate the gazebo haha!! Again thank you for taking time to help and send photos!!

You can go to a local home improvement store and get some flower boxes that hang over the railings of the gazebo . . . these can be easily removed - but you’ll have to go out and measure the railings.

Hello all!!! I am getting married Sept. 12, 2009. We are working with a very minimal budget but we have discussed that we would like a rustic country wedding. We found a moose lodge that is beautiful and has wooden walls and a hardwood floor but I am still struggling with decoration ideas for the ceremony which is outdoors and also inside decorations. My colors are Dark truffle brown and a burgandy/ wine red. Please any advice is great. I don’t mind making everything myself I just can’t seem to find any ideas that I like.

Thanks in advance,

i gave several decor ideas and i hope you find several things to use!! in your colors of course!! i would use a grapevine or rustic wooden arch to marry under. or find a beautiful spot and let nature be the decor. wrap candles in grapevine inside hurricane globes on on brown linens. surround with smaller burgundy votives in rustic holders and burgundy napkins. on tables have wooden signs with numbers of tables. loop grapevine here and there in the lodge with white lights.

Getting some great ideas from everyone’s comments. I have to say country is the most fun and versatile to plan. so many options to choose from that you can mix and match and it comes out looking spectacular. we are having roughly 40 people. so probably 5 tables of 8. How should i do the seating for everyone? let them sit where they want and mingle or something cute and creative so they know which table they will be at. it is mainly family. any ideas would be wonderful. i love to be different and think of creative things, but drwing a blank on this one. Help!

Hi my name is Chris and I am getting married Aug. 28th in central n.y. ceromony and reception at a nice resteraunt on the water. It is very casual, just family and a couple of close friends, around 40 people. we love anything country and rustic (our whole house is very country) so i would love to go with that for the wedding but dont know where to start. how do i incorporate that with getting married on the water? i am getting a very simple but pretty dress, nothing traditional and he is wearing a coat and tie. i am starting to stress out. only 2 months away.

If you can get permission from the restaurant, hang 3 quilts from a clothesline (not necessarily in the same area). Hang one and pin placecards on them in alphabetical order using
pearl pins. Use another to pin photos of you and your new husband (use copies, so you don’t have pin holes in the originals). Instead of a guest book, put out colored pieces of paper (colors that coordinate with the quilt) and pens and
have people write you notes or advice on marriage and pin them to the 3rd quilt. If the milk cans are big enough,
get some dried cat tails or other tall dried branches and place them at the entrance to the reception. Also, consider
using a quilt theme for your wedding cake, maybe you could
even use clothespins to hang a quilt as a backdrop for the cake. Since you’ll have a small cake, consider using a quilt theme . . . do the bottom layer in a quilt pattern, and place
wedding rings (like one on a wedding quilt) on the top layer.
Craft stores sell small tin milk cans, you could use them
as centerpieces. Cat tails, some wheat stalks, and a few country flowers in each would be a nice addition to your country theme.

Thank you so much Nancy. those are great ideas and i love the quilt theme. my mother has a ton of them as well. And i love the cat tails. Was thinking of using mason jars for the center pieces with flowers but i like the milk cans better. Thanks again.

I thought cat tails are both country and water related. . . and you can put any style flower with them
in your centerpieces. Good luck!

brandy,
i would go with a wildflower theme. you can either fresh pick or head to a local flowerstand or walmart and grab up bunches of wildflowers. no specific color necessary. for containers you can get mason jars or any rustic container. washed soup cans are perfect!! i will give you a link soyou can see. i am thinking stringing lights overhead, whether its paper lanterns, or bulbs. for tablecloths consider any natural material like burlap ( be careful with burlap, the fibers may be annoying) branches in glass vases surrounded by votives are inexpensive and amazing. i would just put together some friends and gather up evergreens, pinecones, etc. i would use gingham tablecloths.

Well we are both from a really small town. He is a farm boy and we are both in Utah. We love doing things outdoor. Our garden reception is going to be outside of a little, gray rock church. It is quaint and secluded. Our style isn’t elegant. I would love to find some casual colors that will be fun and unique but classy at the same time. I’m not sure why this is so hard! haha Let me know if you would like any more information…

The hot color combos right now are brown and any color that
pops: brown and turquoise, brown and red, but personally,
I like brown with orange. Most things (ie: the bmaids dresses)
would be brown with beige and use orange as a highlight.
(Think of a Utah sunset!) Orange ribbon on the bouquets,
orange lining in the invitaion evelope, etc. I think of orange as
a ‘western’ color, and it can be cool or warm, depending on
how you use it. Good luck with your color selection!

Go to ebay and search for country wedding flowers spurs

A lady makes custom bouquets. . . she uses sunflowers,
white and light blue flowers and white rope instead of ribbon.
They might give you some ideas.

Consider doing terraiums with sand and cactus (a plus . . .
you can make them MONTHS before the wedding.) Add a second
color sand to match your wedding colors. Also, baskets can
be rustic. Have your bridesmaids carry small fan baskets with
wildflowers or wheat stalks, etc.

also google image rustic barn wedding then rustic barn wedding board ( i used barn because it will pull up more results) might i suggest going to a feed and seed store and picking up small or medium galvanized buckets for floral centerpieces. i would light color linen to brighten things up a bit in the old hall. like the dusty pink. if that isnt possible use beige it will blend perfectly with your colors. choose an array of pink wildflowers with a few white and very pale yellow with greenery( whatever looks like it came from a garden or a field). have brown napkins ( gingham or a rustic print if ya can find it, place silverware inside the napkin and tie with twine. even if you are having a more rustic elegance you can still do this little trick.

for favors have an old fashioned penny candy or fave treat wrapped and tied with twine ( if homemade attach a recipe card to the favor) grapevine looks fab with white lights in the mix, so does tree branches set in rented urns at entrance’s. let everyone drink at the cocktail area out of mason jars ( these are inexpensive, you can buy a case here in louisiana for 5 bucks. mix and match is great idea here especially with containers. so borrow all you can. if you need more help let me know!!

Use some small strings of lights to decorate doorways.
Consider using mason jars for centerpieces to put fresh
flowers in. Ball now makes 2 sizes of “Elite” jars which are
a little more fancy than plain mason jars. You may want to use
gingham fabric for the tableclothes. If the barn needs lots of
work, concentrate on the area where your head table and
cake tables would be and set aside an area for taking photos.
This could be the back of an old pickup truck with buckets of
seasonal fruit and flowers, or a bench or arbor or even
bales of hay with some buckets or jars with sunflowers.
Also, use hanging lights to accent this area and the cake table
and the dance floor. Also, you may want to get a generator
to accomodate for the lights, music, etc. Good Luck!

aqua or teal blue with white or black. You could make napkins,

Another idea . . . consider making rope wreaths (wind
rope into a circle 3 or 4 times) and use ribbons and flowers
in your colors. Small ones can be used in place of pew
flowers, or can be hung on the back of the bridal party’s
chairs. Rope can also be used in place of garland, if you
hang it in swags and tie sections off with ribbons or raffia.
Splatterware also could be used for vases (that spotted
pattern of plates, bowls, etc. that is used on camping
stuff). It also comes in a aqua (almost) blue.

I’m having a country wedding next month and here are some of my plans/ideas: I wanted it to be elegent and country as well, so my dress is traditional white but with camo underskirting and a thin camo band on the top of the dress(whitelaceandpromises.com). My cake is also a traditional white, but I purchased some camo fabric so that I can make a 2 1/2-3 inch band around the bottom of each tier. Also if you both hunt, I found an awesome cake topper at Cabelas.com of a man and woman dressed in camo/hunter orange and guns…it’s very cute. Also my bridesmaid’s dresses are orange with a 3 inch camo belt in the middle of their dress that ties into a bow. The groomsman are wearing khaki long-sleeved button ups with camo arms from deergear.com and the groom is wearing the same only the black version. They are also wearing white cowboy hats while the groom a black one along with cowboy boots. I’m not sure about what flowers I want yet so I don’t have any suggestions there. I do know the flowers will be in mason jars. I’m also serving beer and jungle juice, lol.

living in the south hunting is huge here!! the best flowers i can suggest is anything wildflower looking or since you are having orange in the color scheme. have a very pale orange or pale orange and yellow(you can get away with roses as long as they are the open and old fashioned) but gerbera daisies or just plain yellow, orange and white gerbera or shasta daisies would be better but tie it with lots of natural greenery(think blades of grasses, vines, leaves, berries, feathers, grapevine and of course….cattails(dont forget these, it will make the theme come alive!!)google image camo wedding, also camo wedding theme, then camo wedding board. i google imaged camo wedding flowers for xtra ideas.

hannah, gogle image camp wedding board. what about heading to a local feed store and pick up some small bushel baskets for centepieces. have mix and match platters etc. to fit the theme better and wildflowers/greenery(anything else would take away), hang some lanterns from limbs and have candles here and there. use gingham or lace tablecloths. buy some tin signs lemonade for 5 cents etc. and have iced tea and “ades” in large glass containers(like in naomi and larrys wedding). think glass jars filled with dime store candy and small paper bags waiting to be filled!! lemons and limes for decor would look real great! have a bonfire and smores. have mason jars for adults to drink from. plastic for kids. brides.com and theknot.com has some great rustic real weddings. google image and search wildflower wedding theme also rustic wedding board and country wedding board.

just pay careful attention to the decor when you go in the places again. all of this should be super budget friendly. buy the blue and white gingham cloths and have white and a mix of blues for the flowers, i would add a pop of yellow, red or burgundy though to the flowers so it will add even more to the theme. not much. i think i would choose yellow and add lemons to my decor. google image outdoor rustic wedding also barn wedding board and barn wedding. all of these have great ideas for country decor. dont forget the washtubs iced down for sodas, water etc.

Love all the ideas about Western Weddings/Receptions. I am catering, decoration, etc. a wedding in June. The bride wants a western wedding but her mom said that the western part doesn’t have a place in the church (it’s a religion thing and I respect that very much) so she is doing the traditional wedding with all the frills and lace then the reception is going to be Western. It’s gonna be quite a challenge to get the transistion and yet tie them together but I love the challenge. Keeps live interesting ;) Anyway, just though I see if anyone had any better ideas than I do  .

Thanks,

Here is what a dear friend’s daughter did. They were married in the Episcopal church. The ceremony was formal-while gown and veil for the bride, black tuxedos and tails for the groom and groomsmen. For the reception, which was western themed, the bride changed to white cowboy boots. Here dress had a train that buttoned up to a bustle. The groomsmen changed to black wranglers, black boots and black string ties. The dance floor was ringed with bales of hay. Center pieces were mason jars with wild flowers and old cowboy boots from a collection by a church member. Guest were told to wear denim. Being Texans, the brides dance with her father was “I’ll Waltz Across Texas with You” and the one with her groom was “May I Have This Dance for the Rest of My Life”. Then relatives led the invited guests in a grand march where everyone from grandparents to kids and babies in arms participated. Barbeque was served. Bride and groom departed to everyone waving sparklers in the black night. One of the most fun weddings I’ve ever attend.

Hi Everyone,
Im getting married in June on the 5th, 2009. One of the thing I have done I took old shot gun shell and made light out of them. I took and drilled a hole in the side of them and then cut them down the side and placed white lights in them the hole hold the line in place, they look really great. We have built a deck out of old barn wood to help give that rustic look and thats where we are getting married on. And two it will help add the rustic look to our wedding pics a well. We are going with the red and white checked board tableclothes and mason jar with candles and flowers in them. We are placing bandanas in the middle of the tables and then putting our flowers or candle on them. We are have hay bale for our guest to set on. I am make a scrapbook of our guest book that way it will be something that is looked at more then once. What I did was use the colors of my wedding and take and place that color over half the page for wher the picuter will be and the other side will be for the guest to give ther best wishes at and sign in. I did this on the front and back of each page and if you dont have enough page just print more or get more so you have enough for all your guest. I hope this helps any one that needed some ideas for there wedding date. I know this page has really helped me so I wanted to try and help someone else as well. Good luck and have fun this is your day.

meagan,
this is a fantastic idea!! i see it in weddings alot. your actually borrowing from an old fashioned traditon. my mom got married in the 1960 and ice cream was part of the reception( but only cake and punch with the possible little sandwiches accompanied) where i live we have sams wholesale club. if you have one they have ice cream toppings. i dont know much about costco or wholesale places in your area. but that would be where i went. or walmart in the candy aisle. i would keep it simple. like containers of oreo crumbles, m&m’s, nuts, sprinkles, i wouldnt go the berry route, will stain outfits( on this i would have disposable but pretty bowls, napkins, and spoons, i promise for this it will be easier!) or have buckets of ice creamaxe the toppings, for ice cream cones which guests REALLY LOVE, or assorted ice cream bars which you can get everywhere( popsicles, chocolate covered ice cream, fudgecicles, etc) i did see an idea where you can rent a real ice cream truck for a little while at a reasonable rate, it pulls up with the music and guests just line up, ice cream really does make you happy!! another idea is offer milkshakes, chocolat, cavanilla, and strawberry in disposable paper glasses with straws and lids, have someone whipping them up. guests would love this too!!

Oh my God! My friend just told me that she was searching stuff for her wedding and found a link to my pics on here! That’s my wedding with the ice cream! I had no idea that the pics were public on line!

It was a really big hit and I totally rec it! I hate the traditional formal pastries that people don’t really eat anyway. We had three flavors of ice cream and a crazy amount of toppings and everyone talked about it forever afterward! The one thing that was a little hard to negotiate was to have two people there to scoop the ice cream for the guests. the ice cream bar wasn’t part of the hall’s offering, but i said it was the only thing that i really wanted in terms of dessert so they caved for no extra cost - cheaper for them than all the crazy pastries!

I’m having a sundae bar at my wedding, partly because my family owns an ice cream shop and partly because my fiancee and i have an ice cream obsession. i’ve never seen this before so i thought it would be fun! if you have a local ice cream shop you could find out if you could rent some of their equipment for toppings, etc. also, we are having pies instead of a wedding cake, a more western tradition we thought. good luck with your planning, this was my first time on this site, i love it!

Hey everyone,
I have come to love this site and have gotten many wonderful ideas for our big day. My fience and i are getting married on May 2, 2009. We are getting married in a refurbished barn with the reception in a log lodge. The guys are going to be wearing jean, cowboy boots and suit jackets. the brides maids have black dresses that we got at jc pennys and i will be wearing a traditional wedding dress with my cowgirl boots! :)
Can anyone give tips on the hay bail bride and groom? My future husband has a haying company with his father and brother and thought this was a really cute idea and would love to do it. Just wondering if anyone who has done it would have any helpful tips.
Thanks!!

are the bm dresses in marine blue? i would have girls in this blue and have guys in simple black suits ( i would not have blue vests etc. if you want color here have just marine blue ties for gm, have groom wearing simple black tie) since you are having a country winter wedding. use lots of winter greenery, it will give your wedding a more country feel. white flowers is what i would choose. add blue winter berries to girls bouquets. tie with a gingham or solid color country ribbon. you carry white bouquet with a white or pale blue lace or crouchet ribbon.

* Board #278: Budget Friendly #10, Winter Wonderland( i am in love with this board)

* Board #311: Winter Whimsyland

*Board #323: Sleighbells Ring( look at the hanging pinecones, I LOVE this idea!! could you imagine having a wedding arch covered in greenery and hanging glittery pinecones and all this can be free, if you live where you can gather it.? that would be soooo beautiful, then carry the pinecones as your wedding motif, onto your invites, cake, centerpieces, this is both country elegance) (google image pinecone wedding invite also pinecone wedding cake, also pinecone centerpiece)

i do love the idea of all white reception with white candles and pinecone centerpieces and evergreens, tie napkins or have runners of marine blue( it may be just a deep blue) and white or beige gingham, tie strips of gingham around napkins. this will pull in the blue.

*Board #189: Urban Rustic ( leading up to your pinecone arch, could be candle lined aisle)

branches would be beautiful incorporated in this scheme, especially on either side of the arch in urns or country butter churns and at back of aisle too. move to the reception by the wedding cake or well placed spot. for favors have something edible, like small or medium jars of preserves or honey tied with a gingham ribbon. place these in baskets on a table for guests to have with a sign that reads please take one. in your reception area use jars with candles placed here and there for romantic lighting. or use these on your table ( google image mason jar wedding)

Thanks for all the help!

santana,
could you tell me what color your bridal party is wearing? is it casual? tie bouquets with raffia or gingham ribbon. have white linens with sunflowers in cans, mason jars, or silver buckets(will bring in the silver)i would keep the silver in the silverware and containers. think about adding silver lanterns or paper lanterns.
use everything you can, wheelbarrows and other nontraditional things to hold a bevy of sunflowers.

if you ar going a more elegance way then have girls in shade your using say black. have white linens, sunflowers in silver containers, green napkins, and white boxes with black and white gingham ribbon. hang paper lanterns in trees green white, silver flower girl baskets or buckets with black and white gingham flowing from handle. have drinks iced down in silver galvanized tubs. you can make this rustic too by your choice of containers etc. you use. think guestbook and have a mason jar holding the pen. any unique rustic detail you add will make it so amazing!! i hope these ideas help, let me know if you need more!!

Hey Stacey,
Thank you so much for the ideas you suggested. I thinking of using some of them! Have any more? They were great! Well the first thing is..when I say outside wedding. I’m getting married on a farm. The wedding will take place in front a big pond. Have any ideas for that? My bridal party is wearing hunter green dresses. Plus when I say country wedding..it’s half western too. The theme is sunflowers and horseshoes . Because I ride horses..show them..and trail ride with them. Oh yes and the dressing for everyone will be casual. I’m using a horseshoe to hold my pen for the guest book and I think I’m going to use a big sunflower as the wedding ring hold. :D Again thanks for everything!

santana, love your wedding theme! i would let nature decorate for me. for the pond you could get 2 big galvanized tubs or buckets and fill with overflowing flowers and greenery or better yet branches, for your alter. is there a beautiful tree at the pond you could marry in front of/under? just make a grapevine wreath and hang on tree or hang great ribbons from the branches. have packages favors in gingham bags tied with twine or simple brown paper bags, like homemade cookies or homemade preserves . why not even have gingham tablecloths or lace ? think: like a big family reunion style wedding. have sunflowers in the buckets or mason jars, mixed borrowed cake plates, pitchers( can even use these for flowers), downhome cooking. i included decor ideas from the springhill pavillion the venue used for the danch hall in the horse whisperer.

I am planning a summer wedding at our family farm in june. I would really like to have orange and royal blue as my colors, and i want tiger lilies as the flowers. The problem i am having is deciding if these colors are too loud, and if the colors and flowers will mix with the outdoor wedding and western (country) theme. The bridesmaid dresses are goin to be orange and the groomsmen are going to have royal blue dress shirts, jeans, cowboy boots and hats. IS THIS TOO MUCH? or will all of this mix together?

katie,
it will mix just perfectly!! just keep everything else low key. like in pic. (its not royal blue, but it may help to give ideas), white linens(though brown anchors well otherwise do without the linens if you have wood tables), simple orange flowers in mason jars, i love the blue and orange lanterns, put orange flowers with lots of greenery against the orange dresses. i think i would consider neutral color shoes like brown or a metallic for bm. as i mentioned, if your concerned about the boldness, then tie in natural browns( in wood, linens, etc.) and keep the cake in your blue and orange, cause the brown will keep it from being to bold.touches of the blue and orange will give off the casual country feel like in the pic. i think it will be a beautiful. i love the blue and orange. smile! for more pics google image blue and orange wedding.

The colors will be fine . . . just keep flower arrangements small,
and make sure the mom’s have subtle color dresses so the corsages won’t clash.

kendra, you can take whatever you find and make it into a floral container, wheelbarrow, ladder, troughs, let flowergirl carry bucket of flower petals, hanging mason jar lanterns, wreaths on trees, haybales with quilts on top and with flowers spilling over side, old sign that reads wedding this way, lace covered tables, churns filled with flowers and dont forget fresh clippings from the woods. for songs just google search country wedding songs( i did this the other day and there are so many songs!!) i love the way you love me john michael montgomery also big and rich lost in this moment. also google image barn wedding decor ( lots of ideas)

Hey Kendra,

There are Patron Tequila bottles if you peel the stickers off they look like really antique rustic bottles feel them up with water and put two gerber daises in it. It looks very nice. also if you tie that stuff i cant think of the name but its like straw but it string you can buy it in packs at walmart. but tie it in a bow around the top it really adds a country feel. Also for some songs Allen Jackson sings a song called I’ll go on loving you. its so romantic. or alison krauss has that song you will know what im talken about but it goes like the smile on your face and says something like oh mr. webster. something something but that song is really good but the original singer is keith whitley and his version is really old country its gorgeous as a wedding song. HOPE I was some help. But congrats and Good Luck.

Best Wishes - Crisjin

Hello to all the country brides to be- I was married in June and I used this site a lot!!!! It gave me lots of wonderful ideas so now I am back to try and help the next brides to be. I have attached my wedding ceremony picture, however I don’t have any of my reception pictures back yet, as soon as I get them I will be sure to share them.

My husband and I are tractor pullers, we restored a couple tractors together and we wanted to add them into the ceremony, however I still wanted a elegent formal type wedding. This is what we came up with! we had the tradtional clothing in a beautiful outdoor setting. The ceremony and reception were both at the same place, a local park that was perfect for us. We had the traditional wedding vows, with a little bit of a modification. Instead of a unity candle we had a unity grain ceremony. We had two mason jars (that our mothers brought to a table that we had set up) one was filled with wheat and the other was filled with corn. I modified a reading for a unity sand ceremony and we poured the grain together into a pretty vase with a matching ribbon to symbolize the unity of the marriage. I am more then willing to post the ceremony words that we used if anyone is interested.

I used wheat in everything, the flowers, the decorations, even the programs were tied with a stalk of wheat. I used very country flowers- viking daisys (they look like mini black eyed susans), I used peruvian lilly’s, spray roses and wheat stalks. The yellow did a great job of popping the red and white to make it look more country. I also handed the guests little bags of wheat to throw at the end instead of rice. The bags had little tags that read: shower the couple with wishes of golden grain, love and prosperity ours to gain. Another idea that I used was that on I put our new address on the back of the wedding programs so that everyone who attended the wedding would have it. I hope these ideas help. I will be back with more ideas from the reception as soon as i get pictures!

My fiance and i are planning on finally tying the knot after being together 6 yrs and engaged 4 yrs and we are talking about having a farm wedding. He’s been married before and i haven’t. We are wanting our wedding outdoors at our house w/ Case IH tractors and equipment surrounding us..then having the reception in a local community center in our small town. We both don’t want to spend alot of money so i am planning on doing alot of the stuff myself from the decorations to the wedding cake, but coming up w/ ideas is brain racking..Do you think you could give me some more ideas? Would you mind sending me a copy of your ceremony words? At this time i could use any and all ideas i can get…Thanks. Susan.

cathy, go to brides.com real weddings rustic theme. i love the idea of a bonfire, have smores. can have movies in seperate area for children, things to keep them occupied with a “babysitter”, i love the jar idea too. but why not have paper lanterns? green and brown would definitley fit bill.

have your arch entirely of grapevine, or marry under a tree, adorned with a simple grapevine wreath and ribbon, attached to trunk. have simple plaid tablecloths set with basket filled with your chosen favors (like homemade cookies or old fashioned wrapped candy in small brown paper bags tied with twine or ribbon. (just like a dime store!!) have a dessert table with assorted cakes and pies. ( i am sure your guests will love this, and family will chip in making 1 dessert!!) you will not need much for outdoors. the key is simple.

shephard hooks are amazing when used down the aisle hang lanterns or jars. if in daytime, just tie rustic flowers with plaid ribbons puddling to ground. i am in love with the idea of hanging ribbons from trees branches. think about wheelbarrows with flowers or overflowing greenery, anything that can be used in a strategic spot. wooden crates for centerpiece containers,(especially with writing on side) check out your local thrift stores, do not worry about matching everything. hang photos on a “clothesline”)

We are having cupcakes with an animal on each one and a barn in the center of the table of cupcakes. We are filling mini galvanized tubs with candy corn and peanuts on the table. We are also putting mini hay bales on the tables. We would like to put the presents in a cow trough. Thinking of hankerchiefs for napkins. Borrowing tons of old farm stuff to decorate like milk cans, cream seperators…

and tie it to the middle of the can then hang it on a tree,

I’m having a wedding on May 18th and I’m hoping it would be a rustic conutry wedding because that’s the surroundings I grew up around. I live a mile away from the Mississippi River and I live far out into the country. My yard is 10 Achres and I’m getting married on my Uncles Front Lawn. It’s a gorgeus surrounding of trees, which makes it look like a forest along with a barn in the background. I’m having my reception across the street at my house and I have no idea how I’m going to decorate it! I’m trying my hardest of a cute, simple country theme… But I keep going blank! >.

Vickie! I have the perfect idea for you for favors if you have not foudn them yet! You should do either jars of honey or small bags of flower seeds. How cute to do something earthy for a rustic outdoor wedding. You could say something like “As we grow closer together in marriage, we hope you plant these in your yards to help us celebrate this day!”

Jars of honey are also a cute outdoors favor. and you can buy them in bulk online. Hope it helps!!

Hello all. I have not got married yet but I am getting married Sept. 20th, 2008. I thought I would share some ideas that I am doing at my wedding. First of all I am getting married in a field with willow and apple trees. We are renting a tent for ceremony & reception. As for colors I am doing a chocolate brown and dark red theme. I wanted to go for rustic fall harvest look and not fall halloween look. The centerpieces are ball jars with sunflowers, wheat, different grasses, & hydrangeas. Very harvest looking. For candles I have hot glued cinnamon sticks around candle holders and tied them with twine. Instead of serving buttermints and salted peanuts like most traditional weddings I am setting candied pecans and baked caramel popcorn out for people to snack on. As for cake I am not having any and going with different types of pies and my grandma’s homemade candies. I am going to hang ball jars from with candles in them from trees and set out mums and hay bales. I still have no idea what I am doing for favors. Soo I just thought I would give you my ideas. Hope this helps!

Hi all. My husband and I had a rustic outdoor wedding this past May. I wanted to post the website where you could veiw our pictures and maybe get some ideas. I got lots of ideas from people here and I wanted to help in the same way. Here is the website:

http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/4890909_fkjVz#291815066_UCDAd

or you can go to:

http://exquisite.smugmug.com/Weddings

and then click on Crystal and Keith May 3 2008, and veiw our photos.

Also, to those who want an outdoor wedding (which we did) go for it. I was so worried about the weather because it stormed the night before and the next morning, but turned out to be a beautiful afternoon. We just had tents and shelters rented as weather provisions which you can see in the pictures. Hope all this helps.

I have enjoyed reading this site!!! Am planning a July 2008 country wedding and have gathered some great ideas. Was wondering what you did for the rain plan. We have a beautiful site picked out but I’m worried about bad weather. The reception dinner is a BBQ and we are looking into renting a tent. Also, my fiance is not sure about dancing. Do you think people will be bored not dancing? Any ideas for entertainment? Thanks!!

We did a western wedding a few years ago and instead of music while the guest were being seated, we had my uncle read “cowboy poetry”. It was a different way of doing things, but it came across great. Good Luck.

I love blues and periwinkles for country weddings, and this is one of the most beautiful arrays of bridesmaid gowns I’ve ever seen. With the delicate texture, layering and subtle shimmer they look like gorgeous hydrangeas … and not at all matchy-matchy. (Source: GirlWriter).

Hi gyuys! I saw somewhere that they took ball 1/2 pint and pint jars and made a hanging light. They took wire and wraped around the rim then took three more pieces of wire and spaced them around the rim, wrapped them around the other wire and pulled them up to make a hanger. Then hung them from rafters and put a candle in them. It was a really cool looking country accent.

Im getting married Aug 08, and were doing it out at an old country resturant, the place is pretty rustic so were just using that mainly for decoration. I am doing alot to my tables though, im not doing white everything will be ivory. My flower is bright yellow sunflowers and my main accent color is rich chocolate brown. Im doing my tables in ivory table cloths with a tan burlap runner that im making. which is easy because all you do it cut and let it fray a little bit for more of a country feel. Im having buckets filled with sunflowers and a few other flowers. then placed around those im going to get small cylinder bud vases, and put coffee beans in them with a votive pushed about halfway down in them (each vase will have a diff. amount for a not so uniformed look) they’ll have that country look, my color, and plus it entire place will smell good! I know this is long but i dont have any pictures and i was trying to give a detailed idea. i would just stick with simplicity. after all, thats what country is all about!

Does anyone have any ideas for a reception in a barn. We were going to do Ball jars with candles in them and different things like wheat and maybe some tole around the beams with white christmas lights and paper laterns. Any other ideas? Also we haven’t decided on a color I wanted to do something that would look good with the red barn. Any web sites with pictures would be awesome, I’m a very visual person. Thanks

THANKS SO MUCH I WAS THINKING MORE OF THE BIODEGRADABLE (EASY CLEAN UP AND EARTH FRIENDLY)
I THINK I HAVE EVERYTHING ELSE FIGURED OUT BUT THE CAKE, OK SO WE DECIDED TO DO CUPCAKES AND THEN JUST A SMALL CAKE FOR US TO CUT, WE ARE DOING RED AND WHITE WITH SOME “WILDFLOWERS” AS DECORATIONS AND HORSESHOES ARE A BIG PART OF THE DECORATION, AND WE ARE MAKING THE CUPCAKES OURSELVES AND I WAS LOOKING FOR HORSESHOE PICKS FOR ON TOP OF THE CUPCAKE OR ANOTHER SIMPLE IDEA I COULD DO…THANKS

I don’t think you need real plates and silverware neccessarily. Have you thought of biodegradable plates and cups? Then you can be eco-chic which is really fashionable at the moment and very country.

Hi Ashley and Michelle,
I haven’t got married yet but mine is booked in a gorgeous oak beamed barn in the English countryside next summer. We’re going to have a daisy theme (I think) and hang green foliage and fairy lights around all the beams. We’re having a buffet inside (you can’t trust the English weather!) and have a Ceilidh (celtic dancing but line dancing would do the same thing) to get everyone dancing after the meal. Later we’re going to get all our favourite party tunes together on an I-pod - we are asking people to let us know their favourite songs when they send their RSVPs so that everyone feels included and then just drink and be merry! Also as it’s in the middle of nowhere we’re offering people the chance to camp so they don’t have to drive or get taxis (this won’t suit everyone obviously so we’ll hire a bus to go to the nearest town at midnight). Later in the evening we might have a hog roast and something for the vegetarians. I have no ideas about colours though - having a nighmare deciding about the bridesmaid dresses!

Wow, I can give you a few ideas. I was married this last Saturday at a rustic church that was built in the late 1800’s. We had flowers that were just tied together with raffia and we used paper ribbon “paper twist” for all the bows. The lady hung grapvine wreaths in the windows and on some of the pews and we put bows on them. The men’s flowers had a little raffia tied around the stem. Very rustic. Our cake was set on a tree stump (you can find this idea at theknot.com). I made 5 kinds of homemade cookies and had large cookie jars (ikea…cheap) with brown paper sacks printed like our napkins for favors. My ring barrier carried a bird’s nest and the flower girl carried a plain basket with handle. The guys wore brown tuxes. We recycled our flowers from the wedding by making holders for the reception buffet table and we put them in there for the reception. We had a shoe string budget, so we made the most of everything. Our wedding was at 2:00 so for food we had meatballs in gravy, veggie tray, carved melon with fruit, cheese ball ring, and the biggest hit a potato bar. Everyone loved this. Instead of doing another cake we had a chocolate fountain for the groom. Everything turned out great and everyone loved the more laid back rustic approach. I hope all goes well for you too.

Back again for some more advice, I really appreciate all the amazing ideas earlier. I am set for June 7, 2008 with a camping themed wedding. I am currently working on the ceremony and need some suggestions for readings. It is a semi-casual affair, outdoor ceremony, we are going to have tree branches, and little teddy bears roasting marshmallows on the tables, dragon fly string lights, brown & green with hints of burgandy. Flowers are hopefully to include white daisies. PLEASE PLEASE help. We are NOT having a religious ceremony, it will be done by a magistrate. We want to keep it simple, but sweet. THANKS!

Melanie,

I don’t live in CT, but maybe you can find a state/national park near you. There are always weddings at park and usually the venue fee is very reasonable. Also, who doesn’t love a state park. The grounds are always kept extremely nice and there are always lots of natural wildlife, flowers, scenery to work with. Also, if your reception is going to be relaxed, such as a bbq would suggest, a park/natural area would be a perfect place to hold a wedding/reception. If you are unsure about a location of a state park, I am sure you could call CT state parks main number and recieve info about locations. Hope this helps.

Then, here’s some photos of a family getting ready for a barn wedding, setting up for barbeque, and tricking out all the tables. They actually brought trees into the barn, and decorated the trees and rafters with paper lanterns and twinkle lights. Gorgeous ‘rustic’ flowers, too — sunflowers, gladiolas — tons of color. This was a brilliant wedding.

Kathy, while people might not advertise it on billboards you are definitely NOT alone in having a wedding that didn’t quite live up to your dreams. Sometimes these huge events just don’t go right. You hear about brides who are just so disgusted with how it went that they want to do the whole thing over again. The expense is boggling!

If you can retake some photos and salvage some joy from a do-over of this very important part of any wedding, the photos, I think that is brilliant, not tacky. You’ll have pictures you truly love to show your children, and whether or not the wedding disasters ever get distant enough to be, well, slightly droll (IF they do!), you’ll at least have these photos to savor.

Hey thanks Blake! I didn’t get to take any pictures outside on our wedding day because it had poured rain for 2 days before my wedding. I was very disappointed. Not only that my hair was a huge disaster. I would love several different kinds of photos. I love black and white so definetly some of those and any other ideas you might have are very welcome. Thanks agian!

Hi Kathy, what kind of pictures are you thinking of? Anyway, NO, definitely not tacky. Are you thinking ‘trash the dress’ style photos or some kind of arty wedding dress shots? Or did you just want some bridal portraits to remember?

Brides do this a lot for various reasons. Some want portraits before the big day but don’t want to risk sullying the main dress. And like I said, Trash the Dress shots are increasingly popular and SO much fun to look at, just like a magazine spread. Then, there are the brides who wear a second dress to the reception, and so on … it’s completely up to you!

Good luck everyone. I wish you better than what happened to me.

OK, a few more pics. First is a wheat-theme wedding cake …

Second, some wheat decorations for a bridal shower. They’re low-key obviously… but it’s not hard to imagine how lovely those really simple CPs would look if you tucked some red roses around the mouth of the cylinders (in a wreath shape) and scattered red rose petals around the base.

Third … you can’t really see what’s going on here, but this couple is pouring wheat grains from two smaller jars into a larger one. A “unity grain” ceremony. I think that’s touching and creative for this kind of wedding.

I love your idea of wheat and red roses, if you don’t mind…I might borrow this. Now I have seen a variety of decorations with wheat, where…I don’t remember. You can try good old Marth Stewart, I recall some items there for table decorations. I recall stacks of wheat about 1 foot high tied with ribbon in a fan type of fashion. Sorry but it is really hard to describe. I will keep my eye open as I search for my own ideas. Good luck

Christin,

I have the same dilemma to a degree as yours. We have decided to have our guests walk over to the town hall after the church ceremony for refreshments and bites to tide them over before the reception on our home farm in the barn. This will give us time to take pictures and be on site in time to greet our guests back at home. If you are certain this is where you would like your events to take place I would keep it as is and come up with additional plans. You can have folks meet at destination close to the church to give you time to get there and perhaps to take of other things. And having a 5:00 dinner might be called for instead. I think this is acceptable by any means. You can create some interesting points along your travel route, signs, posters etc…just to provide an extra something. Our town church is about 15 minutes from our home and this is also an appropriate amount of time to expect guests to drive. We also plan to do some car pooling just to help out here. The church to the hall is only a few minutes walking distance. I will plan to have umbrellas available should the weather turn on us this day. Good luck.

adding a few ideas originally sent to candice

tiki torches lining the aisle for an evening ceremony!
lots of blankets, sunscreen and bug spray/lotion if outside
also big on gourment BBQ ideas - nice apple smoked sausages, bison burgers and my favorite cheese (blue cheese in particular)! Potato salad, roasted corn on the cob
I love the idea of having a brownie ‘wedding cake’ - precut with icing or cupcakes decorated with leaves, pinecones, flowers

Idea from candice in case she isnt reading this anymore - personalized flashlights as favors. My favor idea was for camping cutlery (the three piece set on a ring).

Also thought setting up your invitation like a camping brochure would be fun. Include everything on a 8.5 x 11 with a map on the back. Easy to set up on your computer for a really casual event.

OK, here are a couple of camping theme ideas, but please add yours since these are only a few! :P

Food: shish kebab, barbeque, or gourmet hot dogs. There are some truly outstanding hot dogs, especially from the east coast: offer people gourmet mustards and cheese to combine them with, carmelized onions, etc. … try to get your guests to stay over and do a pancake breakfast the next morning with bacon and OJ.

Decor: lanterns like you said, leaves are nice here, birch branches (you can use these in centerpieces or lash them to a wedding arch). There are some beautiful rustic invitations that use twigs. Moss is a great material for “campifying” centerpieces.

If you can get an attractive canoe prop it up and fill it with ice buckets and drinks (or if a really old canoe, fill the whole thing with ice, it will look great). Also see a Fishing Theme wedding.

For favors, there are these little gourmet s’more tins you can hand out (not sure where to get these). Or put gourmet trail mix in small cello or organza bags. Here is a decadent type of trail mix, or you can make your own from fine chocolate, macadamia nuts, whatever floats your boat. bird nest holders for Jordan almonds are a classic for ‘rustic.’ For the kids, put gummi worms and gummi fish in little bags.

A camping wedding is a great excuse to have gourmet s’mores over a campfire. Homemade marshmallows are really a revelation, one that most people might not ever experience otherwise. Upgrade to gourmet chocolate. You can make available all kinds of other toppings too like caramel squares, raspberry sauce, peanut butter. There’s an entire (fun) book dedicated to gourmet s’mores by Lisa Adam at Amazon. Hope this helps!

I just wanted to through this out there. While looking for decorations and items that had a country/rustic feel, I cam across this website that had many wonderfull items. The website is http://www.collectionsetc.com

Also, the items are inexpensive but great. There is nothing over $20.00. I ordered a couple of wagons and quilt racks and love them. You would never guess they were so cheap by the quality. There are lots of items and lots of seasonal items but it is worth the time it take to go through the items. Hope this can help someone.

Giselle, I know a lot of people use plastic cutlery and paper plate for informal-style meals like a pig roast, even at a wedding. Sometimes even at garden weddings. :D Of course you can go fancier if you want to, but if you don’t, you’ll have plenty of company.

Also, you’re right about not wanting guests to pitch in and work. Teens are cheap and glad for the work! If you can hire two or three for the afternoon it will be SO much easier to serve the food, keep the beverages stocked and keep people moving. They can also help you with set-up and tear-down. It will make a big difference.

Kathy, thank you for taking the time to respond. It is a great thing that you did because it was not until you mentioned weather did I even consider this really. Your right, it would be a long ride in any extreme weather. I am hoping I would of thought of it eventually!!!! Well, we will certainly have on site the horses and wagon for the kiddies and young at heart. We are welcoming all the little people and will plan accordingly for them as well. Thanks again, much appreciated. I am still looking for advice on how to handle the buffet arrangements. I am able to accomodate a sit down dinner for all 50 plus in one large square sitting area but again buffet style will have some done before others start. I have to really think this one out, any experience with this out there?

I am thinking of getting married late July 2008 in a rented rustic cabin. It has a nice big room that they tell me is often used for wedding receptions and such. i thought I would have the food and dancing in this room, and the ceremony on the front porch. Here is my problem . . . I would love to have my colors be a pale pink and sage green (predominantly), and I’m afraid this will clash with the browns and earthy tones that will be needed to make it “rustic”. What do u think????? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! :D

Giselle, I do have thoughts on your idea about the hayride with the guests. If it takes less that 30 minutes it might work. I would just consider the weather. If it’s very hot then it’s probably not a good idea. But instead of that why not offer hay rides for the kids during the reception? Just an idea. Tell me what you think.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to post their ideas. I am also having a July 2008 county barn wedding, in my own yard!. I have several timing concerns as we are hosting our own wedding and hope someone will be kind enough to share their thoughts with me. The majority of our guests (50 max) will need to travel at least 2 hours to get to us. As an additional thought I would love to have our guests travel by horse and wagon to the church from the house but this would take under an hour each way. Our little town is only 10 minutes by car but the wagon will take longer. Does this sound too long to put a group of folks through?

However, this time for my guests travel would allow me to have an hour on each end. I am thinking I can finish little details around the house or myself as the company is gone and still arrive to the church in time and have most of the pictures finished by the time they get back? Or so I hope. I am concerned that they will all arrive back to our home and we are not here to assist with their welcome. And if they do, any ideas how to get them to settle in and get comfortable without us here? And how should I handle the serving and lining up of food?

We are having a pig roast buffet for early evening. As the hostess and host, we would like for our company to come and have a great time and feel awkward asking for someone else to get up and dish food, serve etc. etc. . I suppose we should eat first according to every other wedding I have been to, but we feel like we should be eating last as hosts to our company. We would in any other event with people in our home, so I am not sure how to do this one. Also”¦I see many other folks here are doing picnics, bbq’s and well we are having an old fashion pig roast with all the classic trimmings. Can I use plastic cutlery, paper plates etc.??? Any thoughts out there ladies? Much appreciated.

So my aunt thought we could plant white pumpkins to carve Bride and Grooms names in -one way to scratch into before harvest-the scar will heal, also carv part way through and put tealight inside to use for a luminaire. you could punch the holes all the way through then pop little mini white lights in holes. I use battery operated lites. Use mini pumpkins to hold name /place cards- just cut a small slice in top of stem to slide card into. Also use your pumpkins carved out for vases fill with water or floral foam. Dont forget gourds.. Plant your own to lower budget.

If you need hay bales. just stop at a farm with cows and they may let you borrow them without a fee as long as you return them. We actually have a farm and loan out bales. Little pumpkins are cute with the tops cut out leaving stems on as you would for a jack-o-lantern except you dont carve a face.–just re attach the top at an angle on the side with somethine ,i used a cut nail( like they use in putting down pine floors of reproduction homes) leave it showing at the top tie raffia bow on to the nail -insert a votive candle. Adorable at each place setting-beware of children. Also carve guests name into mini pumpkin or gourd before done growing so it can heal. Depending on number of guests this could be used for showers or rehearsal dinners.

I also went on line and searched for apple and pumpkin desserts and used family recipes. Let friends and relatives help u if your ‘e on a tight budget. My brother even built a cinder block fireplace at his outdoor wedding in october it was cold but he had a rental tent and it worked great. No concrete to put it together. He just stacked them. And took it apart after.

Servers are those you see that hold pie plates, usually 2 or 3 tiers. just replace with plates to match your colors. I used mustard with fall leaves. pattern I found at Christmas Tree Shops. Just $1 or $2 each I used 3. Also found at Goodwill and Christmas Tree Shop for

Servers are those wrought iron stands you see for holding pies. Just replace with a plate to match your colors. Usually come 2 or 3 tier. I also found 2 at Goodwill for $2 large and small which held a saucer/lunch plate size or even a bowl. I used the bowl for a cool-whip pumpkin spice dip and bottom with a plate that held cookies/fried won-tons dipped in cinnamon or vanilla sugar.
I found 3 Tier servers also at Christmas Tree Shops for $5 They had black, and gold. One with a rope design, and one narrower and smooth. All you have to do is spray paint them
I also scattered silk fall leaves on white tablecloth to fill in spaces of white, and used silk flowers. Fresh mum plants, gourds. To get guests up and dancing I gave them all cowboy hats. Also found Soooo cheap at Target in their dollar section Yes only $1.00. Good Luck

fall wedding I used wildflower/daisey country cowboy/girl theme. Bride in white w/white cowboy hat/bootsGroom same.Bridesmaids in brown skirts with pink t shirts and cowboy boots/hats Asked guests to dress in country attire. Colors were pink and brown. White tablecloths with 3 squares of scrapbooking papers variety of each spread out in center of table. Next on top burlap square with smaller size. Then Paper bag rolled down to hold vase of daiseys. pink gerber and other wildflowers, bag then tied with jute. you could use small brown rope .

Ideas for party favors. black picture frames with b&w picture of bride and groom. Or homemade mini albums of black cover using card stock-beige paper inside add b&w photo slideshow of couple. also for fall-using unbleached muslin sew small bags with recipe of mulling cider. also served at reception. (opt. herbs for making dips, just add cream cheese,s.cream etc.

Walls were covered with burlap. Ropes hung to hold photos with clothespins, wildflowers hung from stems. Many props of antiques. Wheelbarrow, wagons. tin cans to hold flowers. jugs, Wooden pitchforks, rakes. baskets ,wicker and wire. Ive also seen barn with all wooden beams. Wide pine floors. Stained wooden fold up chairs but using all white tulle, china. and crystal and candles-very elegant. I picked up alot of wine/water goblets at Goodill. Many serving trays. white, crystal, silver sooooo cheap! Even ice cream sunday cups-clear glass. I used strawberry & cream topped with whipp topping and vanilla mirangue.

Check dollar stores too. Use many tiers. Servers-just use white or glass plates . Stack up those cake plates for hordervs or desserts. One more tip for all you daisey lovers. Candy melt molds made for daiseys/black eye-susan. individually wrapped tie off with raffia. very cheap. Enjoy

We are getting married in April at a church built in the late 1800’s. The church is in a very wooded are, you can not see the road from the church or vise versa. We are planning a country theme. With old lanterns as center pieces, mason jars with tea lights hanging around the outdoor reception pavillion, and raffia instead of ribbon. I plan on having a true picnic themed reception, with fried chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, corn on the cob, and baked beans. Sweet tea and Lemonade with cokes, water & maybe beer in a metal washtub of ice. Also I’m thinking of giving favor boxes filled with the brown paper filler with the makings of s’mores in them tied up with raffia for a favor. I would like to know if this sounds ok or not?:-?

Lynn,

I would try garden centers or craft stores like Michaels. Also, try going to http://www.etchesinstone.com. It might be a bit more money, but he may give you a significant deal on quantity.

Jessika,

I think if you add a little yellow that would be completely summery. More important then colors is the texture of the colors and how you will be using them. The bouquets and flowers could have pink and red, with a little yellow here and there and hand tied with a cream ribbon. The Tables could be covered in red and cream checkered gingham, you could but another color with the ribbons, with napkins. I think even the worst possible color combinations can work if you think about texture.

By the way. I looooove the idea of the barn and am totally envious. The posibilities seem endless. I saw this barn reception site online where someone made curtains around the barn doors, with a gauzy material and had hay on the floor under the tables. I don’t know any one with a barn like that so I am going for a rustic goddess garden near a brook. My centerpieces are going to be herb baskets. I am even naming the tables after herbs. I wil be sitting at Thyme, you know… Because it is about thyme I got married.:D

Good luck. I think if you are stuck, just add one other accent color and work with textures.

amanda,

If you google Calvin Klein Cadbury brown Tuxedo it should come up. Heads up. If your dress is off white, make sure all of the male attendants wear off white shirts or the photos of your dress will look muddy. Also, the off white shirt looks much better with this tuxedo; in my opinion.

Amanda,

My fiancee is wearing a very nice, Dark Brown tuxedo that is very thin and breezy… all things considered. It has a black undertone so that black might go. I don’t know how easy it is to find in your area. It is a Calvin Klein suit that is pin striped in texture, not color. I think if you see it you will be as pleased as I was.

Jennifer,

have you thought about a barn? I saw someone do a posh, rustic wedding reception in a barn. You can have the doors open if it is nice and have picnic tables or whatever have you inside to bring elegance to a rustic setting.

Just a suggestion

Well I’m having a spring wedding (may more than likely) and I live in northeastern oklahoma. I would like it to be outside, but with living in Oklahoma there is never a guarantee on what the weather will be like, so I am torn as to go ahead and try for an outside wedding or try to bring the outside inside and what kind of facility to have it in. I’m going with a country theme, by colors are white and baby blue, with daisies being white and just an assortment of light blue flowers, kinda like wildflowers. I don’t want to have to pay two deposits on places just so I will have a backup and then loose the money that could have went to something else. Cost is a big matter. So if anyone has any suggestions I would really really appreciate it. Thanks!!!

Am having a rustic, mountain, country, Scottish, Autumn wedding. Whew! Hard to keep on track without becoming tacky. We rented a stone lodge in a state park. Decorating with burgandy and cream mums. Twinkle lights, swags of autumn leaves, pinecones and autumn flowers. Having cocktail tables covered with white linen, then tartan toppers on them. Center pieces are lanterns that are really candle holders (www.collectionsetc.com). Beverage table with galvanized tubs full of ice and beer, tea jars with lemonade and tea. Favors are mason jar mugs. Might have fans since October in Maryland is iffy, could be cool could be hot and this place doesn’t have AC. Trying very hard not to have Harvest Festival look (no pumpkins or cornucopias), not a Christmas look (easy on the pine and twinkle lights). We are having an hammered dulcimer as guests arrive. Bagpiper for the recessional, old time string band for the music. Any other ideas? This forum is great!

My hubby to be doesn’t like suits and wants to bring a bit of country into the wedding and so wants to have himself and the groomsmen dressed in moleskins (cream or black), cowboy hats and boots. The bridesmaids will be in royal blue dresses. Any ideas what colour shirts the boys can wear. Also not sure how to tie in the ‘country boys’ with the girls dresses

If you’re looking for outdoorsy/artsy ways to display flowers or candles/arrangements for the tables, check out http://www.fetchingpails.com They make fabric covered galvanized pails, french vases, and tubs…. and they’ll even customize them to match your color theme.

I am planning a summer wedding (June of 2008). We are both farm kids and love the country so we are travelling from the church to the reception site hayride style- pulled by my hunny’s restored John Deere A. We’re planning on having a pork BBQ with all of the fixings.

I was originally planning on having sunny yellow, white, aqua, and lime green for accents as my colors. Will this clash with my vety country reception???

Also…ANY CHEAP decorating ideas that involve homemade or natural items would be greatly appreciated!

I had a beautiful outdoor wedding 4 years ago in early october. We used a local park that had a pond. It was no charge and the park manager was good enough to even bring in chairs. For table decorations, I rented glass candle holders and bought taper candles, which were really inexpensive (about .25 per table). Then, we sprinkled rose petals around the bases, although I really like the idea of a votive in a mason jar. I had green wheat in my bouquet to set off the hydraengas, lillies and autumn colored roses. Bunches of the same green wheat were wrapped with ribbon and hung along the isles. This would also be pretty for a centerpiece. We rented a huge white plactic archway, that was so sterile looking, but the florist put ferns all around the base and lined the columns with those wavly looking twigs, tying thin wire around the twigs to secure them to the columns and weaving flowers and leaves around the wire. Luckily my Dad made all the food and we recruited family and friends to serve guests. That was probably the biggest savings. Good luck and enjoy every minute!!!

I am getting married in May 08. We are having an old-fashioned type wedding. We are getting married on the (huge) front porch of an old farm house. There are not going to be many flowers just lots of personal touches, such as a quilt rack with quilts out great-grandmothers maid, a coulple of old late 1800 chuch ben
