I’m getting married in September (five months) and we are paying for our own wedding (my fiance and I). We’re providing the pig and venison roast for our wedding and I believe that it’s alright to ask our guest to provide a small side dish. He believes that’s wrong of me. Is it? And if it’s not, how could I tell him it’s alright without upsetting him all over again?

First, let me congratulate you on being a cool bride letting your matron-of-honor pick the color! Persimmon is a great color that can work in any season - just tweaking how you accent it. Your bridesmaids could be in fuschia, melon, kiwi, or my current fave this year, turquoise. Their sashes would be in persimmon & your matron-of-honor would have the alternate sash color. Let the flowers tie it all together. It’s so much more interesting now to see the combo of colors, instead of a boring palette. Let the guys pick up the color in their ties. These colors are wonderful to accent with at the reception, and gives you a lot more to play with. We are selling lots of organic colors in our favors this year. I am thinking of using our engagement session photo and getting copies made of size 2×3’s, and putting the pictures in a two-sided snowglobe. The picture would be on one side and our name and date would be on the other side. The snowglobes would be our special giveaway that we would give to each family, and everyone in the bridal party.

I am getting married Nov 8, 2008, and our budget is on the slim side. We also, like the “Fall in Love” theme, and reading some of the questions and comments on here has really given me great ideas concerning party favors/centerpieces. I saw something that caught my eye, and thought it was very cute, but I am not sure if it was on this site or not. Anyhow, it was little maple leaf shaped bottles filled with syrup and of course, tagged with the bride and grooms name and wedding date on them. I like that idea, but am completely sold on the caramel/candied apple thing. I too, would like for the flower girl to throw leaves instead of flowers. My question is this…..
I have my heart set on getting married at the church that I attend, but I am not sure that a reception at the church is feasible. We have already picked out the song we want to dance to as husband and wife, and who will sing at our wedding, but I have heard that dancing and singing isnt allowed in a church reception. I have not confirmed this with the church that I attend. Has anyone ever run into this problem?

I just saw a pic today that really supports Brenda’s great comments. It’s taken by California’s Tempting Weddings and posted by She Walks in Beauty, and the background really shows how great this could look for fall. Turquoise and brown isn’t the first thing you’d think of for that time of year, but I think this is convincing!

You’re fortunate to have a year to plan because you can see the fall colors now - what works, what doesn’t. My best advice to you is to go to a fabric store and get swatches of fabrics, ribbons, trims, everything that you like. Tear photos out of magazines, again, anything that you like. As you do this over the course of the next couple of months, you will see a pattern start to emerge. Also, I caution you not to be a slave to the fall colors. Yes, they are gorgeous, but it could be that a shot of turquoise or a dash of cerulean blue could really make those autumn colors POP. Turquoise and copper is a fabulous combination. Or, it may be that you just pick this accent color up in the bouquet, or perhaps the table linens, or even the grooms cake and napkins. Also, I like to have the rehearsal dinner in a totally different color scheme (don’t want the guests to return the next evening to “same-old, same-old”). This could be where you have a cool blue scheme. Best Wishes!

I was actually having the same problem… I had a hard time figuring out a way to incorporate blue into a range of fall colors, and blue is my fiance’s fave color. We wanted an apple/harvest sort of theme because we are getting married in the Appalachians. So we decided to leave blue out. But we did come up with something we didn’t use: wine colors would be great in the fall, especially as grape harvest is usually that time of year. Use wine inspired colors like deep blue, rich red-purple, and pale greens. You can incorporate beautiful vines in your decor, and serve wine, of course. Good luck!

Hi! I’m very recently engaged, and we’re thinking of getting married Oct. ‘08. I’m really stuck on colors, b/c I love fall and the idea of using colors like brown/cinnamon/and gold, but blue is/has always been my favorite color. I found a jewel-tone blue (”marine”) color on David’s Bridal website and really like it also. Does anyone have any ideas on how to incorporate the blue with the fall colors? Will it look bad with fall colors? Thanks for the input!

We are getting married 9/6/08, our colors will be deep red, goldish/copper with some deep plum and green in our decor. For favors I’m going to get some inexpensive wine glasses from IKEA (under $1/ea) and order a stencil of the Castle we are getting married at from the above website and some 2 products (activator and cream). Each guest will have get an etched wine glass that can serve as a souvenir also. We will print out little colorful thank you leaves with our names and date and tie them on with a matching ribbon to say thank you. Cost: $1.48 each. And they can use them that day with the wine we will be putting out on the tables. We’re getting married out side under a tent and hired our own outside caterer.

Why don’t you name the tables after trees…like maple, oak, aspen, birch, etc… You can use place cards in the shape leaves that correspond to each table’s tree name.
Or, since Fall is known as a time of harvest, you could name the tables after fruits. But flowers isn’t a bad idea!

Hi Sara, just some of my thoughts!
Picking out the gowns or letting them pick … I think that’s really up to you and your comfort level. I think most brides have really been pleased with the overall result either way. You can send your bridesmaids a swatch of fabric to match if you’re using a color that’s pretty particular, such as chocolate brown. You could also ask your bridesmaids what they prefer. If you have some really varying body types they may be truly grateful to pick their own style.
Tuxes: I love, love, love brown tuxes. I am crazy for them! And yet … I wonder if that might not almost be too much brown, with your bridesmaids wearing that as well. I attached a pic here with two brown tuxes, left from Calvin Klein and right from Jean Yves. Just MHO, but brown vests/ties + black tuxes are one of my favorite color combos for the men, and I think it breaks up the color palette a little.
Now, nothing against the major bridal warehouses who make it very easy to match, but I think if you get too matchy-matchy with your bridal party, it looks a bit like a Persimmon or Chocolate Brown bomb went off in the area, KWIM? It’s nicer to coordinate than match, IMHO.
Flower girls: they are basically like walking flowers.
IMHO it looks GREAT to outfit them in the brighter, more saturated colors in your palette, like you’re thinking of. Chances are good those colors will really coordinate beautifully with the brighter florals in your bouquets. I included a beautiful orange flower girl dress here from MyFlowerGirls.net. Next to the brown bridesmaids dresses, I think it’s super-cute. What do you think?

My best friend is getting married October 6th 2007. She and her fiance chose the colors Brown and Gold. We’re thinking brown and gold roses for the centerpieces maybe with Terra Cotta pots? Sara…My girls are wearing Brown dresses with Ivory accents for my october wedding. So I have my groomsmen in black tux’s with brown vests (a lot of places have nice brown vests that have designs in them to break up the dark on dark look). In my case the vests have a herringbone pattern with a mixture of lighter brown and darker brown. They are wearing ivory shirts also. The groom will be in ivory vests etc. Go to a reputable tux place and ask questions. Most are very helpfuls.
Karamelky…for my girls, I bought them handmade jewelry to wear with their dresses for the wedding. That way they will all match. You don’t have to go to the mall and get 24k gold etc. Look for small places that make nice beaded jewelry that will match your dresses. I also got them each a pair of flip flops that match their dresses to wear for the reception. Keep it simple. They’ll appreciate the little things.

Sara - I’m having chocolate brown bridesmaid dresses too and we considering either champaigne or ivory for the groomsmen’s vest & ties. My dress is a warm ivory, so ivory is an easy choice for the groom. AfterHours also has a great brownish paisley style we might go with. If you can, take a swatch of the Bridesmaid dresses when you shop for the guys. It will help you envision the whole party together. I’m sure you’ll find something you like.

I am having an October 20 wedding of this year and i am having six different bridesmaids colored dresses. I am going with Chocolate, Cranberry, Gold, Olive-Green, Burnt Orange and Chianti. The guys’ vests will match their partners dress.. it is looking very pretty so far!! if you have your girls wear brown dresses have your guys vest be a somewhat shimmery brown so that it doesnt look like they got dressed in the dark and mixed their colors up. they can wear black shoes. but make sure their flowers have some brown in them to complement the brown shimmery vest. but i think if you use the orange dresses with black tux it will look too holloweenish.(just my opinion)

I know a lot of you don’t want to go with the orange theme…my wedding is October 28,2007. I could only think orange for fall but in bridal pictures, orange looks like the circus came to town. I am getting married on Oct, 13th 2007. My girl’s dresses are going to be a chocolate brown and their flowers are very bright fall colors, like red, orange, yellow, etc…they are even going to have real maple leaves in them. I find that the brown dresses are a great background for the colors of the flowers and makes them really pop. For my favors, I am getting little spruce tree seedlings and putting them in little pots and wrapping burlap around the pots with raffia and a thank you charm, they are really cute. Michaels craft store is the place to go for lots of fall ideas! My centerpieces are so cute, they are wrought iron pumkins with votive candle in the middle and fall flowers around the them. Got them at michaels! I am using lots of falls garland leaves that look so real, also from michaels. instead of using white tool, I am using a copper color around an archway with white lights and fall colored garland to put aroung the main door of the reception place. I am getting married September 6, 2008. We are using red (my favorite) and a coppery gold for our colors. We are getting married and having the reception at a large museum with beautiful gardens and verandas. Everything’s great except I have absolutely no idea what to use for favors!! We are getting married 11-17-07. We were going to get married on May 26 but had to change the date. I still have my original invites, basket, guest book, ect all with a double heart theme. We are getting married 9/29/07. I’m using copper as my accent color. I don’t really care for orange so I figured copper would be a really elegant fall color. I’m doing 8 inch cakes as my center pieces with small bud vases and votive candles around the cake stand. I had a hard time finding copper this summer but now a lot of the craft stores are getting in fall items and it has become much easier.

To those of you looking for fall wedding ideas -
I am getting married 9.29.07 at an apple orchard and my fiance actually had the best idea. We are using birchwood covered barrels full of golden yellow apples for our centerpieces and my fiance suggested that our programs be printed on small natural colored gift sacks with a note encouraging guests to fill their sack before they leave. The idea for coursages/boutonnieres came from my aunt who used to be a florist. To save some $ she suggested using small pine cones and berries with a small ribbon in our wedding colors. We are getting married 10/13/07 with the theme “Falling” In Love. The wedding designer had great suggestions on flowers in season and chocolate brown roses. Check with your local florist. I have found you can mix more expensive flowers with things like gerber daises in fall colors to help save $$, but still have elegant fresh flower arrangements. We are also doing small pumpkins with a pumkin bread recipe in a cello bag tied with a raffia bow and cute tag to give as favors.

Go any arts & craft store for all of your decorations (silk flowers, greenery, bows, ribbons & etc.) & this include your candles. I used a fall theme for my wedding & I purchased all of decorations under $200.00. For example, I found at “Dollar Tree” a bag of silk maple leaves for $1.00. The flower girl threw the leaves down on the aisle runenr before I made my grand entrance. I caught every sale either at the beginning of fall or the day after Thanksgiving for catch the bargins. You can rent candle/pew holders at any party rental place that rents tents, chairs, tables,candlelabras, linens & etc.

I feel you on the over play of orange for fall weddings. I too, was going to go that route, but I decided to change my mind when I started shopping for wedding invitiations. I fell in love with my invitiations and the colors on them. You can use the bright magenta, gold, burnt orange, deep purples or something along the lines of those colors. Good luck!

Also I gave them friendshipballs, which are blown, stained glass balls that hang in the window. They represent friendship and love, which is what I feel for my 5 bestfriends. Hey all,
Looking for an autumn love poem for the cover of my invitations and programs for my September 29th wedding…any suggestions???

I was married 10/1/05. We had a very small budget, so we had to be careful with our pennies. We were kind of stuck on the decorating for a fall wedding; we didn’t want orange and brown and leaves all over, either. What we did instead was selected really deep, rich colors to kind of keep with the season. My favorite color is dark green and my husband’s is deep purple, which really compliment each other. So we selected those as our colors. At the reception, we used kale rather than flowers for the arrangements - the colors matched ours and kind of kept it in a harvest theme. On the tables, we had pillar candles surrounded by wreaths of berries to compliment the colors. My mom, sisters and myself all do canning, so we canned fresh peach slices in small 1/2 pint jars. We tied ribbon in our colors around the tops and I made labels on the computer with our picture and the tagline ‘Thanks for making our day peachy!’ along with our names. I figured that with the cost of the fruit, sugar, jars and lids, ribbon, and labels that it cost $.87 per jar to make them. That was WAY less than we would have spent on even just those almonds in little bags. And everyone loved them - a year and a half into our marriage and people still comment on them. There were none left on tables - everyone went around and took the extras. And they were so easy!

cookie - i am getting married in november, and we are putting out little white boxes with candy corns inside. then a tag attatched with ribbon that says something corny to take home. BECAUSE at every wedding you go to there is something cheesy to take home

Hi,
I’ve been checking out site for my wedding that is taking place on October 11, 2008. I know thats almost two years away and I already have started to buy alll the things I will need for the big day. We are having over 400 guests and 20 brides maids and 20 grooms men (like I said it was a BIG day). Since I am having so may bridemaids and groomsmen what sort of individual gift should I give each of them? I’m still surfing the net looking for ideas. Anyone have any suggestions?

I’m having a fall wedding and I thought about having candy apples as favors. Does anyone know how much i should spend on something like this? I need about 100 apples. Thanks

Hey, congrats to you and your bride. You have a lot of options to decorate with fall colors. First, you may want to surf the net to view different florist arrrangements dealing with live flowers. For example FTD, a nationally-known florist retailer and other local florist retailers. Second, surf the net to look at Michaels Arts & Craft, Garden Ridge Arts & Craft, & Hobby Lobby stores to get some ideas. Third, check out the online Bridal magazines like Modern Bride, Bride, Ultimate Wedding,The Knot and Style to get some ideas as well. I hope that some of my suggestions will help you and your bride.

hey i know its a little weird the groom getting on here. But were planning a fall wedding and are looking for some ideas mostly flowers and color scheme that doesnt really make it look like the pilgrims are back please help with any opinion you have thank you so much

Sharlotte - yankee candle has macintosh apple scented candles, or even granny smith, that might be great for fall. try a cinnamon scent too… i would check around for scents like that. some places even have “harvest” scent.

I am planning a fall wedding (2006) and I would like for someone to suggest what type of scented candle should I to give along with the small bags of potpourri that I plan to give to our guest as wedding favors?

cindy- try wreaths and balloons, also making small bouquest with fall leaves from micheal’s, etc. my aunt is decorating our ceremony sight, it is an old house (built in 1800’s) and no tape or anything that can hurt the house. So using tulle to hold up fall bouquets and hanging wreaths on the doors. How about an old wooden wagon for holding some presents or a wagon holding a bale of hay with favors on it.

Cookie- my wedding is Oct 22 also! I like the love is the spice of life! We are putting candy corn in cellophane and adding a votive candle…..our wedding is really inexpensive lol.

my daughter is getting married nov 26. It’s an outside wedding in fall colors but the reception is inside i’m not sure how to decortate for that any ideas or picture would be great!!!!!!!

Daughter’s wedding 10.22.05 the groom wanted nuts as favors. We are putting the nuts in a clear plastic cone container for our guests to nibble on during the cocktail hour. I like message for the tag found on your site. At each table place guests will receive a clear Irish coffee mug with a a serving of mulled spices wrapped in a cellophane bag & ribbons. They will be labeled with recipe, a thank you note and her decorated with motif (acorn). We need a cute thank you saying…any ideas?

For our fall wedding I bought mini pumpkins for cheap at a nearby farm and combined them with “maple” garlands from a craft store. For favors, I made my own candles using small canning jars. I bought the wax, scents, wicks and colors from an online candle supply store and made three “flavors”: cranberry, autumn spice and vanilla maple. They turned out *great!*
