Month by Month: Wedding Themes and Colors for Every Season

Still at the start of your wedding planning process? Ever wish you had a guide to help narrow down the themes and colors that really suit the time of year you're holding your wedding?

Here we try to do just that. Granted, these are just suggestions ... and they don't take into account destination weddings, or seasons outside of North America, for that matter. Not to mention: a grandly-decorated venue is a blank slate you can transform into anything, any time of year. And some of these themes and colors are really fine for year-round use, though we didn't want to repeat them over and over (Black & White or Fifth Avenue Aqua being two examples).

But all disclaimers aside: if you want some great color combination or theme inspirations for January, June, or anything in between, read on!

March, April

If your climate cooperates, this is a wonderful time to celebrate spring's earliest bursts of color, flowers and delicate life forms: Lilies of Valley and Shasta daisies, daffodils and tulips, butterflies and dragonflies. Brides are instinctively drawn to pastels like lavender or yellow, whimsical and romantic pairings like red and pink, or combos with a modern bent like pink and lime green. A monochromatic look using all shades of pink is also totally spring (and stunning).

Some popular themes for spring? Cherry Blossom, Butterfly, and Irish or St. Patricks, to name a few.

Also, popular spring color combinations that double as themes include Aqua Blue (Fifth Avenue Style), and Pink & Green.

May, June, July

Summer brides sometimes complain that they can't find any summer themes, besides the usual beach or garden. Not to worry though: there's more here than you might expect. Summer also offers some of the most brightest, most energized palettes for brides who aren't afraid to play it modern. Contemporary picks include orange and fuchsia, green and hot pink, black against any kind of eye-popping-color, and chocolate brown and pink (or aqua).

Favorite themes for summer are numerous, but here are just a few: Garden, Daisy, Enchanted Forest and Victorian Garden, Beach, Starfish, Hawaiian Luau, Preppy/Nautical and Poolside. Don't forget Patriotic or Baseball, Fairytale or Asian Garden, Polka Dot or 50's Retro, and South of the Border, Rustic Country or Western.

Color Themes for the warm summer season include all kinds of Green, Cornflower Blue, Orange & Fuchsia, Black & White Toile with summery accents like yellow or pink, Aqua Blue (beach style), and the lighter purples, like orchid or Aubergine.

Summer

August, September, October

The colors alone bring this season near to the hearts of many brides who can't imagine tying the knot any other time of year. From russet to pumpkin orange and cinnamon to vanilla, the scents and famers' market decor of an outdoor Autumn wedding makes a setting like none other (not to mention the awesome photos!). Another plus: the grapes are ripe, and it's time to celebrate a brand-new season of wine.

Popular colors for this time of year include latte, mocha and chocolate brown, rust orange and burgundy, hunter green and gold. Nature-minded themes are all the rage right now, including New England Harvest, Harvest Modern and Halloween, "Perfect Pear" and Apple, Tuscan and Wine Theme, Herbal and Rustic Country. Chocolate Brown also amounts to a theme ... one that suits the season to a 'T'.

Fall

November

November's long been a sticking point for brides who want to stay close to nature, but aren't huge fans of the bright, brassy colors of autumn. We've try to address this dilemma with our new "Fields of Gold" page, which pays homage to the natural world and November's subtler palette of creams and golds. For more urban, indoor and delectably chic approach, seize on this time of year for a 1930's Retro / Art Deco Theme, with its November-friendly palette of gold, ivory, sepia and black, and its oh-so-apt nostalgic feel.

November

December, January, February

Friends and family are stuck inside, desperately hoping for a romantic diversion. Which is why this time of year's about making big, elegant gestures: going back in time, playing with lighting levels, indulging in romantic fabrics and heavy molding ... in short, transforming an ordinary interior into a portal to another world. Favorite colors for this time of year include ice blue, silver and white, gold, red and green, metallics paired with black, ivory on white and vice versa, and all the shimmery jewel tones.

Top themes that fit the season include those with a pale palette and opulent look, such as Calla, Parisian or Versailles, or those with a holiday feel, such as Christmas, Victorian Christmas, Winter Wonderland, or Diamond or Crystal Theme. Of course, Valentine's Day is a natural for those marrying in February, but the bold red and white palette works just as well for any other deep-winter setting. Finally, maybe it's the Oscars, or just a need to cut loose after too many dark afternoons, but there's no better time of year to hold an Old Hollywood or even Vegas theme wedding.

As for color themes that suit this time of year? All-White, Regal Red, Black & White, and Royal Purple.

Holiday

What'd We Miss?

We know this list is hardly exhaustive... there are plenty more themes and color schemes tailor-made for autumn or spring. Why not share some of your favorites below?

Stacy,

So I have not been able to get any pics of my venue. Sorry I know it makes it a bit difficult, but what i’m trying to do is the following. I want my wedding decor/feel to me simple, elegant and comfortable. I will have at between 400-500 guest. I also am on a very tight budget and have some sponsors. So basically i’m a bit confused/lost. SOMEONE HELP

jennifer,
that is okay. once i get a look at your venue i will be able to see what colors will be best. i can also take a look to see what type of decor it will or wont need. you said you wanted comfortable; warm colors such as reds, oranges, etc. will be cozy where blues and greens give a bit of peace and tranquility to the guests.

i would take the word comfort and build my wedding around that. you said your wedding date will be in feb. did youwant a winter theme? if you have a link to the venue i can go take a look. looking forward tohearing from ya!! :cheer:
Off the top of my head: white fairy lights and greenery, mixed with simple white roses. i am thinking all greenery centerpieces cause it just looks sooooo magical, especially with candlelight. you cant beat it for its ability to withstand anything, its simple but has lots of statement, use in simple glass or silver containers. have falling elegantly over side. and the best part? it is soooo budget friendly!! keep the main flowers like white roses to the bouquets only. more tradition? have a white bouquet wrapped with blue satin ribbon. girls in ice blue. guys in basic and classic black suits or tuxes. have cake in ice blue with white roses cascading down side. overhead beams? tuck greenery on beams and wrap with twinkle lights. flowergirl in white dress with black sash. if you dont care for black, brown is just as gorgeous. whimsical? have fabulous favors! like fun heart shaped lollipops with trailing satin ribbon on each place setting. will give the hint of romance and nearby valentines day.

Stacey,

I really like all the ideas and I was also thinking of doing a winter theme. But the color I was thinking about is like a golden/tan color along with whit or vanilla color. The centerpieces i’m thinking sqaure vases with a bundle of roses and candlelight surrounded by it. Let me know how u picture that? Thanks alot ;)

Jennifer, After looking at your color scheme and the locations( San Antonio) I thought how neat would it be to have a color scheme based on a gold/white theme and a color famous for the Texas/Spanish culture using spanish gold, champagne, and white color scheme. I made a board to show how it looks. It is nothing more than white with a range of golds from light to dark shades. Hope you like it. I thought you could use your rose centerpieces and add either short stems of curly willow or icy branches( from a craft store) into your roses and votive centerpieces.

Hello Jennifer and Stacey! Sorry to bump in on your conversation, but I love the ideas you’ve been playing with. I too am having a very difficult time finding the right theme my wedding. Mine is March 29 and that screams spring wedding, but - I’m in Michigan and it still snows here til mid April most years. So I’m really confused. This will also be a renewal ceremony for my husband and I. Our first wedding was very tiny (I didn’t even have a dress and we only have one picture from that night). After being at my cousin’s wedding on October 25, we both realized how much we missed the little things like our first dance, photos, him seeing me for the first time in my dress. So, we decided to the wedding I always dreamed of this time ’round.
So, to get to my point… I need help! We’ve narrowed it down to 2 locations for the ceremony/recption combo, both owned by the same mgt. co. I’ll post pics in the next post. Some of the colors I like are…

All Shades of Pink & Red
Champagne & White
Black & Brown
Navy (in small doses)
Lime & Peridot Greens

Thanks for any help ladies!

Thanks! But I’m having trouble getting pics. Their website wont let me save them. But I’ve been thinking and I was led by a google image search to a collage you did of cherry blossoms and such after I found a picture that expressed exactly what I was feeling. The picture was of a blooming cherry blossom branch with snow on it. This is even more special given I spend a lot of time as a kid playing under one of these trees that grew in my back yard!
So, here is what I have going, but not sure how to pull it together….

Lots of cherry blossom branches, rich dark brown, rich (but not hot) pink, and peridot green, and ivory instead of white for my dress.

Hey everyone! I’ve seen some great ideas here and was hoping that I could get some help as well. I’m getting married on 8/21/10 at a winery/B&B overlooking the shores of lake Erie. It’s the 2nd wedding for both of us, so everything is a bit more casual. I’m looking at an ivory strapless dress with a high-low hemline and the guys are wearing dark khakis, white shirts and ties. My fiance and two of the bridesmaids are fair skinned red-heads. So, the following colors are out: yellow, sage, pink, orange, red and any pastel. I was looking at mocha, but I think it may be too much neutral with the guys in khaki. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

my suggestion is to take your bridesmaids to a store and see them in the different colors and see whcih one makes them glow and feel very confident and beautiful.

Hi Kelly….I dont think it would be alot of contrast. I actually attended a wedding where they used three different colors and the combination looked great. They used Chocolate Brown (Mocha), Gold and Beige…so it might give you an idea.

Stacy and Yvonne,

Thanks a bunch for the advice. I wish I could take them all out to try on different colors, but I have three bridesmaids in three states. So, I’m sending them out with ideas and cell phones (to send pix). What do you all think about a darker brown (truffle) for the bridesmaids dress with sage accents to lighten it up a bit? Or, I was also thinking about going with the truffle dresses and, since it’s August, go with wildflower bouquets in bright and bold summer colors.

Kelli,
i love the solid dresses with the wildflower bouquets. the dresses could more easily be worn again. another idea you could do is tell them to pick the shade of brown that looks best on them. the contrast is really pretty when all grouped together. it will make them very pleased, cause then they have a dress to wear again. also they it they will pick out what suits their body type. david’s bridal has truffle and other browns in mix and match that way they can choose and still look uniform and polished.

The wedding will be in the summer of 2010 and we haven’t picked a site yet….Any ideas with these birthstone colors and pictures maybe!!!

We’re having a March wedding (3-13-2010), and have started the whole planning process. We are thinking about doing crimson, gold, and cream as our colors, but we are so unsure. We tossed doing navy about but figure it would be too dark for March. We definately want crimson because we are both HUGE Alabama footbal fans. But we don’t know what else to put with it because of the time of year. Do you have any suggestions for other colors, bridesmaids, and maybe flowers, etc.? Our theme is very casual.

I should also add that I love fall colors but don’t see how it could tie in with the season or the venue. I don’t have a picture, but the church were getting married at has hunter green carpet (yuck!) with white and pale blue green walls seperated by a chair rail.

christy,
you can always have a aisle runner to hide some of the green carpet. have you thought about crimson and champagne?
*here is a red casual wedding setting, they used alot of greenery with the red and it worked perfect, would for your venue also!
i saw this setting and it took my breath away. i am assuming that the blue walls are very pale almost white, if so, i wouldnt worry about that. this pic has hunter green chairs and they used red for everything, it is beautiful.
*evening wedding picture

i didnt know what shade the hunter green was, some look more teal while others are more green.
* this is nice ( you could use more red)
*okay i found this one and said wow, fall colors with a spring time look. THIS would be perfect, every thing about it!!it would solve your color dilemma with the green and pale blue. christy this would be super nice!

I need some help big time in choosing the colors for my wedding! My wedding is going to be in early August, in Michigan. So it’s the end of summer, not really fall yet. The wedding will be outside next to a pond, near the woods. The reception will be at the same site, except for indoors. I really love earthy tones. I was thinking brown, green or blue, and gold or oyster. But I don’t want it too look to “springy”. I was thinking of using the metallic colors more as accents, not really as main colors. But I don’t know what shades of brown, or blue, or green to use. And I don’t know if I should use blue or green or both! I just cannot seem to figure out what is going to work! Any ideas?

just have the mothers choose a blue or a shade of pink even champagne or grey. something that would compliment. the only exception is they are not suppose to wear the same exact shades as the wedding colors.

Hello! I am considering aqua/tiffany blue for my evening wedding July 10, 2010. The venue I have picked has a lot of greenery, white twinkle lights, white chairs, and an option of white, ivory, or black tablecloths. I have seen the venue set up with the various linens and the black ones look the best. My fiance agrees.

Here is a link: http://grandloft.net/

I think I want the overall color scheme to be aqua/silver/black.

So….what do I do for bridesmaid dresses and flowers?

Also…it is still several months away and the MOTB and MOTG are asking what to wear. Any ideas?

Kim,
have the girls in aqua or black whichever they feel most comfy in. then have a simple clutch of white flowers with matching ribbon. for the mothers a simple shade of blue(except aqua) will be fine, also silver or grey would be very nice. now if the bm wear aqua and you dont mind the mothers wearing a black cocktail dress then that is also an option. they can wear aqua heels with the black if they choose. overall with this color scheme i would consider white florals thruout.

Kim,
oh yes! i completely agree with the black linens. i would do the black and white colors as main then add accents of aqua. consider adding aqua ribbons around black dresses also, if the bm decide they want to wear black. which they may since it is so practical and wear again friendly, with or without the sash

I love royal blue and dark purple. We are actually talking about using those colors for our wedding. I just recently got engaged so I don’t have pictures, if you go to http://www.theknot.com the have a link you can look at color combinations. I think gold would be pretty with it. Maybe do gold linens or something. I’m not sure. I’m not very creative with decorating. hopes this helps. :-)

I am wanting to get married either in march on st patricks day or in april at the end of the month and was wondering would my color scheme go with those months? I wanted emerald green, ivory and gold. my dress is a corset ivory and gold dress looks vintage from the creole days, and my flowers would be white roses, calla lily’s and gardenia’s. so i need help, would this be a good idea?

caitlen,
you have an oblong face shape. you should wear studs or button earrings. you can get away with chandelier earrings because they are wider and dangle. as a rule the more detailing on a gown the more simple the jewelry. since your very beautiful dress has lots of beading, i would stick with a great pair of earrings and no necklace. also you can add a very simple elegant bracelet if you wish.
i live in louisiana so unfortunately i am not familiar with washington state venues. i do think outside would be beautiful though!!

caitlin,
i would have them in emerald green. if it looks good on their skintone. you could consider having a champagne sash, which would be in blend with both gold and ivory. it will go with your dress and be gorgeous. for styles you will need the girls to try on the ones that suit their body shape. for instance, davids bridal you can mix and match or pick one color and they can choose the style they love and a bridesmaid feeling comfy on your wedding day and wearing something that looks great on HER body will give lots of confidence, smiles, and most importantly great pictures!! smile. i would keep their dresses in a simple elegant style. keep their main embellishment not on the dress but a great pair of beaded shoes or fantastic jewelry. since your dress is beautifully adorned, i would definitely keep theirs( for example) a simple flowing emerald green knee length dress with gold heels. carrying a bouquet with all one flower style bouquet, like 5 ivory garden roses for example tied with a emerald ribbon/bow with a rhinestone brooch set in center of bow. simple and stunning, will match your dress perfectly without the over adornment.

caitlen,
with an oblong face it is best to avoid piled up hair. have your hair sides pulled up and with a beautiful rhinestone bridal comb, which would wear like a tiara. choose a waterfall veil. it should be worn more to the back side of the crown instead of on the very top of the crown. like the way you are wearing it in the pic.

you can still have a simple black tux if you want. or you can go with a navy blue. you can pair navy with many colors, it is like a staple color. i would take cue from the venue you are marrying in. you will want to compliment that as well. do you have your venue yet? if so, what does it look like?

i would suggest using simple white. it looks so amazing with apple green. the other accent color can be the colors of the tux or suit. if they are in black, have a apple green, white, black wedding. it would be perfect. this would give you the perfect opportunity to put your bm in classic black with apple green and white bouquets. it is such a refreshing color scheme.

Joy,
here is a board i made. i used simple shades of peach raning form light to dark, what is great about this is you can stick in one color family (peach) cause the dark peach you see in the board looks like a light spice color. i thought creamy white linens with the rhinestone or crystal accents really brought the colors to life. so, actually, just adding “creamy” whites (not stark white) wuld be all you need. i thought the black suit just added class. brown seemed to make it more fallish. if you use the peach from light to deep shades it will look lush and will trick the eye giving an illusion that your flowers were a high ticket item. keep to roses or one type flower only. ( i suggest roses).

oh yes that would be beautiful. you dnt have to have a theme if you dont want. but why not a crystal theme wedding ( taking it from the crystal blue) you could have your centerpieces with acrylic jewels/confetti or rhinestones in bottom of your vases and then fill with water and flowers. tie jeweled monograms on your napkins. have your cake with jewels. have hanging crystals from your arch, it would be really pretty.

Hi, I am recently engaged. My fiance and I have decided on royal blue and royal purple with a touch of silver for our wedding. We want a royal theme however we have a problem. We are graduating from college in may and my fiance is commissioning into the US Air Force in may also so we have to have a summer wedding and our colors are not exactly summer colors. ivana,
i live in louisiana so i know exactly what you mean with an outdoor wedding!! we have the most unpredictable weather i know!! lol. and your right people would pass out from the heat! your color scheme will work but i would only use blue and purple together in the flowers with silver in the silverware and the other metal accents, bm shoes, jewelry etc.
you could pick either royal blue or royal purple as my main color. i would have the bm in a universally flattering periwinkle or lavender. it would work for a year round color scheme.
*blue and purple wedding
*this is soooo gorgeous!! perfect for your theme! ( perfect for the bm in that universally flattering color i talked about)
tip: purple signifies royalty so i would choose that as my main color with blue floral accents. please post back and let me know if you like any of the ideas. this color scheme is perfect year round, usually colors can be if you put the accents and decor right for the season or mood.

i feel that unless you go for the silly idea of having a christmas themed wedding in the middle of august, or easter at christmas, or something silly like that, then whatever your theme that you choose will go with whatever time of the year is. my fiance and i are planning to get married in May (but a couple of years yet), and are either going for a sea side theme, or a royal blue and royal purple theme, with little hints of dragon flies and butterflies. it’s your wedding, you do what you want, when you want, no-one ought to comment on the theme you choose.

tons of ideas. it depends on the formality you want. i love the khaki/taupe suits perfect for a informal garden wedding. simple black would be perfect for a classier affair. i would have the bm in the shade that works best for their skintone. with a garden wedding it can range form a classic neutral all the way to yellow, pink, green, champagne, etc. flowers should be mainly roses, with lots of greenery. i would not want to compete with the scenery though. the best way to find the perfect colors is to look at the garden or what flower colors bloom. you will want it to fit in. let me know whattch think!! :D

i would actually have champagne linens with black runners, girls in simple black with gold heels. you carry champagne bouquet and let the girls carry a very pale blush bouquet with champagne ribbon, for a pop of color if you wish. or you all carry champagne roses and just make the ribbon different or more roses for you and less for the bm for variation.

hi eve,
actually brown would look sooo good with this. if he doesnt want to wear brown, khaki is another alternative. it is perfect for the time of year, though the look is on the more informal side. perfect for the beach, informal outdoors. i have seen it squeezed in for a semi formal and it didnt look out of place. youcould always choose a charcoal grey, it will go beautifully with the pink and coral. girls in silvery grey would be equally fantastic. for a more classic affair choose black. the best advice i can give is take your overall time and location into consideration. the formality of the wedding. the colors you have chosen to go either/or. all the way from casual to formal. post back with those details and i will be happy tohelp!!

I definetly want to have an outdoor wedding, im really interested in having it in a garden venue. My dress will be an ivory color. My flowers will consist of either roses or tulips with the coral, pink and ivory colors. As far as the bridesmaid dresses we were thinking of coral dresses .. what do you think would be better?

eve,

*coral and ivory wedding

coral would be beautiful, but have you thought about silvery grey? the guys could wear grey also. it is such a wonderful compliment to coral and pink. if you dont care for the girls to wear grey(or they dont care for it) then have them in the coral or a pink with the guys in grey. i would suggest using a lighter color or the grey to really make the coral pop. the easiest way to find the right color is take your bm tothe shop to try on colors, stick in the ranges of coral, pinks, you could even have them wear another great neutral in brown or black. whatever color suits them best is what i would choose. also head to your local craft store and put together the “ideal” but makeshift bouquet have them hold the bouquet against the dress colors. this is a great visual. i really think the grey would be awesome, grey also comes in light to deep shades. you just might be surprised, in how wonderful it can look!!

isnt that bouquet stunning?!? vivid garden colors. the roses are jawdropping! you could pull colors from the tri color bouquet and have centerpieces in an all coral roses (for example) on white linens. or combine all the colors. you could even have the girls carrying all pink bouquets with the moh carrying all coral. you could really play with this color scheme.

Hello - I’m having a difficult time trying to determine what the groom and groomsmen should wear (as far as the color pallette is concerned). My dress is ivory, the bridesmaids dresses are burnt orange (Alfred Angelo) with some chocolate brown accents such as a sash or underskirt. So it’s ivory, burnt orange, and chocolate brown — where do the guys fit in? Help! My FMIL warned me about having the guys wear black since it will invoke Halloween colors (orange and black). I want a FALL scheme not Trick or Treat. Any suggestions??

sarah,
have youthought about a bbrown or black with champagne color scheme? for florals you could have blush and champagne with pale yellow florals.
since your not sure about your color scheme, go here and browse the color gallery, sign up free at theknot.com then click wedding photos it will take you straight to the details and another one is….

once you browse color schemes let me know what ya think. also what does your venue look like, it will help alot on narrowing colors.

hmm, well i’m almost certain i found my dress. And i decided to go with somthing traditional and sophiticted. So I’m sticking with champagne. And the second picture with the white roses and candles is looking very nice. and perhaps instead of periwinkle I could use a teal color like that in the candles of the picture.
teal and champagne. I think my fiance might like it too. :) thank you soo very much.

sarah, i agree that is just gorgeous!! that is why i posted that beautiful pic, i love the way the blue looks against an all champagne , ivory, or white palette. i would have the linens and napkins champagne. i would have the favors in teal or white boxes with teal ribbon. just simple, strategic touches, so you will get that all one color effect with pops of color here and there. but not to much teal or it could lose its effectiveness and that is what makes the above pic so dreamy. its very subtle.

Stacey, My daughter is getting married on August 15, 2009. The reception will be held in a large open room overlooking the lake. All glass room. Her bridemaids dresses are a patina green, very close to a sage . We have Ivory linens. We were thinking about ivory, several shades of pink to hot pink, with a little splash of purple flowers. Dont know which colors would make the most impact. Thinking of using sashes of one of these colors across tables. Any ideas. I am a little confused. Thanks

paula, hi!! i found this pic and thought it would do the open room justice. i chose this pic because of its impact and serenity factor, which by the lake would be a plus. i do think you are going inthe right direction with the pinks, however, i dont think i would add the purple. it might look awkward in this case. i would stick with a simple pink palette, because you dont want to compete with the views of the lake, youalso dont wont to blend in to much and your reception look dull against the lake. i will say patina green and whites with orchids or roses with shades of fuschia on the edges would be a knockout especially with green hydrangeas. like here:

My fiance and I love autumn colors so we’ve decided to have our wedding in October. I really want to do fall oranges and my favorite color is purple so I want to accent it with a dark purple. I really don’t know how it would look. I really want my bridesmaids’ dresses to the be the color on the picture, so that’d be the accent color. If anyone can give me any advice or help I’d appreciate it ;)

my daughter bought a traffeta trumpet (mermaid) white gown and she was wondering is there a theme that looks best with this. she likes the colors navy and hot pink. color for bmaids dresses and color for reception and tux? she likes gerber daisy flowers. the dress from davids and its very flattering. any help would be appreciate it.

gail,
it is really a matter of taste. though these dresses have a subtle lean to the dramatic. they are purely stunning! i have seen this style dress range anywhere from a beach wedding to a glam affair. find out some key elements to her vision. navy and hot pink are a great combo! if it were me, i would have a elegant affair inspired by the 40’s. think supper club. ostrich feather centerpieces. this could be super easy to do and on a budget.
*feather wedding centerpiece
*navy and pink wedding pics

she can still have gerbera daisy bouquets, just add a bit of drama, pull in roses and a collar of feathers or rhinestones.
*feather wedding bouquet
*gerbera daisy and feathers wedding bouquet
after skimming over the links, let me know if this would be something she would consider. it is important to look at personalities and bring in what they lean too. remember a theme is not necessary. color can also be her theme incorporating beautiful elements that are close to the couple.
also check out theknot.com. click on the wedding photos link and go to the color gallery. you will need to sign up ( free).
another option. i saw a wedding in a mag years ago. teh bride wore a trumpet dress on the beach. the arch was made out of grapevine, green hydrangeas, gerbera daisies, and dotted with a few roses. the colors were green and white. she carried a simple bouquet of white roses, bm wore a shade of green carrying white gerberas. the aisle was scattered with a few white rose petals. the reception was all white, centerpieces were green hydrangea, white gerberas and roses. green napkins. the look was so amazing yet so simple. this may give you another idea. oh! the guys wore black. the black REALLY made the greenand white pop! i have been searching for that pics ever since but no luck. write back when they decide and we will go from there.

Help!!! I’m getting married this year in August and still cannot figure out the colors for reception.
My bridesmaid want to dress in gold, and there’s a sash on the waist cannot decide what color will look good. I’m also struggling with the decor. I’m having an outdoor wedding and want to hang on paper lanterns. I visited some stores and found they have lanterns in orange, yellow, green, pink, white and blue. Please tell me which color/colors to choose since the bridesmaid will be in gold.
Other items I want to use are butterflies and doves for the cake.
Thanks a lot

michelle, it really depends on the look your after. if you want more elegance have white and pale green lanterns with creamy whites, orange, green florals. for the sash have a simple deeper gold or mocha. for the guys have them in brown or black with mocha vests and ties.

look at this real wedding it has the green and white floral scheme. i love this wedding so much it is elegant yet the paper lanterns give it a touch of whimsical.
*inside weddings ( picture #5)

pink and gold is a great and foolproof color scheme!! you could tie a pink sash around the gold dresses and have reception in white and gold with green and deeper pink centerpieces, overhead hang green, pink, white paper lanterns. love it!!
i wouldnt have the green and gold cause it may look to holidayish unless it is a lighter yet beautiful shade of green ( like sping green). blue and gold just follow the same for the pink and gold ideas except use blue where i suggested pink. i wouldnt choose the yellow.
for visuals, google image pink and gold wedding then blue and gold wedding board you can also look at green and orange wedding

hi am a wedding planner mysef if you would like send me some of your reception area photo and i be glad to help you with ideas if you are using circle talbes use glass mirrors with clear vase or red ,white,or even a black vase with one single rose in it with some clear or red pebbles around the mirror also if you use a glas vase you could use floating candles what really nice in a clear glass vase is take a rose with some red rocks in the bottom place your rose inside fill it up with water it look awesome if you want to go cheap because you would love to save money go to your grocery store flower dept and buy your roses and do that your self what cheaper also for your backdrop if you not having anyone come in to decorate you can use black garden arch decorated with face roses oh and instead of using white table cloth use black from your fabric store and place red, white ,black balloon on the table if you wanted to go that way also there are so many ideas to use but i hope this help to get you started plus you can place candy hearts that are red and white on the tables as far as gift favor you could use package seed with as easy as a ribbon tied around it with your names thanking them for share in your day or m&m ,choclate bar ,bottle water with your pic attached

I am a romantic, and our story (how my fiance and I met) is really like a fairytale…I have read that even your dress should completment your theme…and some of the dress selections recommended just would not suite me..I like the more simple dresses, with a little bead or lace, not a long train, strapless…any ideas or recommendatins would be appriciated!!

Thanks

I thought of the blue too, then changed my colors to red. but when i was gonna do mine in the blue, i was thinking of an Enchanted forest/ Cinderella theme. i thought of white, silver, and light or a darker blue depending on the color of the blue for your dresses and lots of glitter on twigs, icycle lights in blue or white, candles, maybe your flower girls wearing fairy wings with flower rings in their hair. silver and blue table coverings. your flowers yellow, white, a couple shades of blue with some of that spiral stuff sprayed with silver glitter. I was gonna make a castle wall out of plywood, paint it like a castle wall, then put a piece of lattace in front of it with flowers vining through it and then having a bench in front of it or a bird bath with something in it. Then i was thinking of having my guest get there pictures taken in front of it. or do all that with out the bench and bird bath and put it behind the bridal table. If you do go with that I would have your bridesmaids wear the fuller puffier dresses. that’s all I can help you with. I hope it was helpful or gave you better ideas.

i agree with paulas idea that sounds so romantic!! one colos is a simple blue and gold ( google image blue and gold wedding) also try blue and silver wedidng board. i personally fell in love with the champagne and blue pic. google image pale blue wedding
*light blue wedding board
* karen tran: wedding decor and florals ( check out everything here!! you will be glad you did!) also go to theknot.com click wedding photos and start browsing the color details. my theme would be rhinestones.

here is my suggestion. guys in black and champagne vests. bm in champagne carrying blue bouquets, with rhinestones. flowergirls wearing blue. ceremony decor in whites and creams. you carry a creamy white and champagne bouquet with jewels on handle. arch has suspended prisms. reception have centerpieces of white feathers in crystal vases, on front of vases have rhinestone monograms attaches on black ribbon to encircle square vase. champagne linens, black napkins, gorgeous blue and gold wedding cake with rhinestone cake topper. favors in lil’ blue boxes with black ribbon with rhinestones. lots of greenery will keep costs down and loks superb with rhinestones. candlelight will add beautiful fairytale romance.

I am getting married September 19th 2009. My dress is ivory and my bridesmaids dresses are chocolate brown. The groomsmen tux’s are chocolate brown with the exception of my fiance and ring bearer whose tux’s are ivory. At the church we are using hot pink gerbera daisies and light green cymbidium orchids with other filler flowers. Then at the reception we are using hot pink, bright yellow, and orange gerbera daisies for all of the table centerpieces. I feel like I have chosen everything very carefully and hope that it will look beautiful like I have always imagined, but I just thought I would ask everyone’s opinion!? Jamei,
would you consider pairing it with a neutral like black or brown? fuschia really plays well off a simple neutral; really makes it shine. fuschia paired with brown or black looks sooooo good! this color shines when paired with a neutral. another color is taupe. martha stewart is famous for her wedding style and she really stole the show with this pairing

So i just got engaged and we are getting married in May 2010. Him and I are trying to compromise on colors. He just wants black and white. But I wanted to add a little bit of color. I didn’t want anything too girly. So I was thinking hot Pink, red, black and white. What do you think about that? Please someone help and give me some advice. Thanks!!

Amanda,
I really like the patriot cake topper. I think it is real cute, but your spelling was, well it was just a little off. Did you finish school? And by the way, why did you not have a REAL first wedding??? Your colors sound OK I guess but do you think you and your wedding party will look like an American Flag? Maybe you could wear a red dress, the men could wear navy tux’s, and the gals white. Don’t you think that would be cute. By the way, who will you be using as a wedding coordinator? Anyway, I bet you have a GREAT step-mother!!!!

“hatin” on my spelling; are you? Well, the cake topper is beyond “real cute.” It’s “really cute” even. My first wedding wasn’t a “REAL” wedding because I was 18 and about seven months pregnant. (AND the preacher turned out to be a crook….so was it even legal?) I don’t plan on making it Fourth of Julyish (yeah. . . a new word). My step mother is great!!! Do you know her? She is my wedding coordinator/ photographer/make up artist/ hairstylist/ flourist/mother of the bride/ caterer/ babysitter. She is really handy and gave me a wonderful deal!! Contact me if anyone needs her services! (joking)

Well I think im changing my mind on color for my bridesmaid dresses I really like the purple theme and being able to incorporate the hyrangeas and lavenders. I like the blue purple feel. However which color do I pick from the davids bridal site that would work? My bridemaids are different height/wieght and I dont want to offend anyone. Im getting confused!

angie,
if you wnat to go with the blue purple, that would be super!! i do love the idea your going with. its really hard for me to say what will look best on the girls, i would take them to the shop and let them try on colors. you really wont know til you see how it looks in person and with their skintone. if it overwhelms, etc. when you see how they react as well as yourself you can begin the color elimination process. another shade of blue or purple could work. one color that you could try is a simple light blue, it matches the season your marrying in and it is PERFECT for a western wedding, easy to work everything around, blending so great! it can be your something blue too, by tying your flowers with a light blue ribbon.
as far as dress colors i fell in love with the juniper, victorian lilac, i assumed pool or capri is the light blue?!? would you consider brown or black dresses? that would soooo good with these flowers along with the guys in black cowboy hats. your girls would love you for getting a wear again dress in basic black.

this color is really pretty. yes it will show in pics. dont worry about picking any particular flower. think fresh picked from a garden and with that anything goes. for this type wedding none other will do then creamy pale yellow roses mixed with a stem or 2 of hydrangea; add some lavender mixed in with a few daisies. just think hmmmm… if i was in a garden i would pick a little of this and that to form my bouquet. your on the right track with the pails. use what youlove!! this is from a fave movie; the girls are in a similar color.

So I am getting married in June, and I have chosen the colors buttercup yellow with coral accents. I have a wonderful florist, but I am wanting to decorate the sanctuary in brighter colors. The only problem is that the carpet is dark navy. I am planning on setting up columns with greenery to cover up the back, but is is possible to do anything about the carpet?

karen,
yes you can have a wedding runner up the aisle. that will disguise it some. i will say yellow and coral will go beautifully in the venue. they both compliment blue. you can do the sanctuary in more yellow or more coral if you wish. why not add a bit of blue to the scheme very faint touches of course. like wrap your bouquet in a light elegant blue. another thing you can do is add a pale blue sash toyour dress or the girls dresses. if ya want you could add great little grape hyacinths to your bouquet. what color are your bm wearing and can i see a pic or a link to the venue? i posted a pic of a bouquet. see how beautiful? it will be stunning to add pops of blue. aqua is usually right at home with this color scheme. if i know more details i can better help. you florist should be able to add small touches even if it is in bouquet jewelry. like a blue rhinestone intital or butterfly. it will stand for your something blue as well. dont feel you must put blue in everything. just a few strategic places.

molly,
first can you tell me what the formality is? what colors do you like/dislike? your venue?
i looked at the beautiful color and was wondering which direction you wanted to take it? my first thought was all champagne color scheme with pops of oasis. you could think of adding a fresh green ( think light orchid green) with the champagnes and creamy white and i would use orchids with the fuschia in the center. this would be gorgeous!!

michelle,
the menu complimenting the theme is optional. you will want a complimentary menu tothe time of day though. if you can give me more details i will do all i can to help! the venue will be key in determining colors as will your ideal vision/setting. what type of mood are you wanting? when is your date? formality? especially look at the colors youlike and dislike. cause you may have to go lighter or darker; maybe add with another color still fitting and complimenting your venue. i have mentioned to other brides that determining the type of wedding you want begins with sitting down with your fh and blending ideas. he may have a color that means alot to him to incorporate. also look at your home decor and in your closet. there you can see what you are most drawn too.

sha,
it will still go. what i would do is add a little red to the bouquets and centerpieces. nothing else needs to be done. dont worry about going all out with red as a third color. since it is a may wedding….think: red faux berries those will look super chic and perfect for a late spring/early summer celebration. btw. red looks stunning with grey! another thing you can do is deepen some of the flowers like in pic i posted, more or less do shades of the pink from hot pink to reddish pink this will be super gorgeous and totally blendable!! ( this is the way i would do the decor the pic with the short grey dress; see how some flowers look reddish?)
another idea is go all pale pink in the flowers except for the cake and have it with the shades of pink/red-pink. accent with the girls bouquets.

april, oh absolutely!! it will be a night to remember! the best and easiest color scheme i would use would be navy blue and white and the palest of yellows. have bridal party (guys and girls in classic navy) for a stand out decor against a night wedding. flowers need to be light. thats why i pickedwhite and pale yellow. it will be super stylish using this.

for gorgeous tables have simple pale blue linens then add a shimmery white overlay, have accents of the navy blue in napkins, programs, and/or favors. for centerpieces i thought it would look so neat to have those tall glass vases fill with water at bottom of base you could have metal or crystal moon and stars (like 3 depending on size, be sure to use metal or crystal shapes for the weight) hook from bottom of florals and let hang in water they will float. make sure the items you purchase will not rise but hang gracefully in the water. i think that would be pretty hanging from the flowers. of course you will have the greenery and florals draping over sides so keep it balanced.

google image celestial wedding cake; i google imaged celestial wedding bouquet and saw bouquet jewels. i thought they would add the perfect touch! glittery tulle and gossamer with white christmas lights can be your best friend when it comes to decorating. me, personally, instead of going with the silver stars etc. i would use crystal looking decor(google image crystal looking stars).

also google search celestial theme wedding then google search star theme wedding. i was thinking it would be soooo beautiful if you could attach stars on ribbon or fishing line. ( again make sure the weight will hold them down) and suspend them in mid air over every table in the room( if venue allowed) then over the dance floor have more stars and the moon. this would be dreamy!! okay i also google images starry night wedding and up came tons of pics!! perfect for decor ideas!

*Fun Outdoor Casual Wedding ( this is such a great board, you can adjust your colors to yours and i would keep everything just as casual simple white linens( or no linens if you have great tables) with simple orange centerpieces. if you keep your flowers down to 1 type in 1 color you can add fillers like leaves or other fall foilage including greenery and/or fruit and make it look amazing! collect all you can at a flower market or flower stand.

El,
perfect colors! calla lilies would be an excellent choice! for the bridesmaids you could do a mix of callas and roses or have them carry callas in a pale blush or pale yellow or the champagne(the color of candlelight) , to go against the brown dresses. you could give them a colored bouquet without even incorporating it into the other decor and it will look fantastic. it is sooo popular to use one type flower in many colors or one type flower in one color for everything. all you have to do then is change the ribbon color the size on theirs vs. yours. make your stand out with a family heirloom attached or a beautiful brooch. or maybe have the stems on theirs longer than yours that way it is still different.

Our wedding is planned for April of 2010, I’ve been checking into color options usually used in wedding around that time of year and I’m seeing a lot of the same colors mentioned on all sites, but our colors are usually mentioned for summer weddings and not spring. We have already decided on orange and white as two of the colors, but my mother says we should pick a third that is kind of “in the middle”, whatever she means by that I have no idea. Now, I really don’t want pink flowers or accents in the wedding because I am not really a pink person and most options I’m finding has pink with the orange. I need help finding a possible third color and I also need someone to tell me that I am not crazy for wanting an orange wedding in April, because I think my mother thinks I am! :meh:

ellen, of course orange in april is a beautiful choice!! no you dont need a third color, unless you want one. orange and white is a fab choice just add the green in greenery and you have a wonderful springtime wedding. what i would do though, is use several shades of orange from apricot to peach to deeper orange. the results will be smashing!! but if you do want another color think yellow. i hope you find some wonderful ideas!!

you will have to use green instead of jade cause there aren’t as many results for jade. just google image green wedding board, then green wedding table also go to theknot.com under wedding photos it will bring you to color details gallery.
also google image green with other colors ( example black white green wedding board) and look at other colors with it. i personally love the black white and green. you may have to adjust the color a bit to if you wnat to look at specific color boards( like emerald green wedding board) so up todate yet timeless!! can you tell me a little about the couples fave flowers etc.
heh i just looked at the emerald green wedding board for sure look at this, cause it tends to have a more jade green in some of them. and the color schemes you type in also google search them as there are more results there too.

His favorite are royal blue and orange.. and i tweaked it to be navy blue and orange. Thanks for your help! :D

La Trecia,
yes, have the complete bridal party in navy, guys too. it looks equal to black or brown’s classiness. i like th orange sash. but you will get a more streamlined and even more classic look with plain navy for girls. i prefer plain dresses with a bouquet of orange shades ranging from light to dark. mostly light and medium though. i dont know the formality of your wedding, but a clutch of roses or clutch of gerbera daisies would fit the bill. depends on the look your after. okay for the reception, have white, gold or silver , and orange centerpieces. keep it soft and romantic yet bold. using white will simplify your tables, easier than colors. and orange napkins and centerpieces will be beautiful.

rose, here are some links below. i am gonna post what i think will work(shades), i am trying to find shades that wont look LSU or athletic. incorporate a white cake with edible shimmer dust or glitter. add sparkle within places with sequin ribbon. i would put the girls in eggplant or aubergine( keep dresses jeweltone, will look fab on their skin) and have guys in simple black and white tux or suit. add color with colored bout. bm carry a bouquet of ( different shades of purple, you carry yellow and white) and have centerpieces a mix of the 3 colors. use white or icy purple linens( with a bit of sheen) you will want shimmer due to winter ice etc. dont be afraid to add crystal stems to this decor.

lisa,
could you tell me what other colors you like? your fh? what does your venue look like? navy and white looks crisp and clean, add yellow it makes it softer, romantic. a hot combo is navy and pink aslo navy and green. pair it with beige and it looks nautical. navy is as versatile as black, no wonder its becoming popular!! i love it!! for starters, google image navy blue and pink wedding , then navy blue and white wedding, navy blue and yellow wedding. check out those color combos to see if anything jumps out. for a june wedding since you are having a deep color, i would add a lighter color to soften it up. though 2 dark colors can look very glam and celebrity worthy. you can look at navy blue and orange wedding too. though i would lighten this up for a romantic feel, unless you are looking for a bold color.

I asked someone about this because my daughter also wants to use Navy blue for her bridesmaid dresses (she is wearing an ivory wedding gown). The suggestions we’ve gotten have been great! We especially liked the idea of a celery green (colorful, but not lime), or coral. We’re still trying to figure it out. Good luck and let us know what you decide!

jewel, hi. why not use all 3 colors? have bm in navy and have them carry a beautiful bouquet of celery green, white and pale coral, wrap stems with ribbon, no hanging ribbons. then take sapphire rhinestones (decent size) and have lined in a row of front side of the ribbon wrap for a bejeweled bouquet. have men in dark blue. keep ceremony decor in green and white. then in reception have crisp white linens, coral, green, white centerpieces in blue vases, think about renting bue stemware too. or keep it simple… in napkins tuck a blue flower sprig(hydrangea?!?) have cake in white and blue. stick to timeless decor such as lots of greenery and simple flowers. think about adding faux or real green berries to the arrangements.

Pink in any hue goes really well with Navy blue. I went to a wedding last summer that had hot pink with Navy - a very fun look.
