Month by Month: Wedding Themes and Colors for Every Season

Still at the start of your wedding planning process? Ever wish you had a guide to help narrow down the themes and colors that really suit the time of year you're holding your wedding?

Here we try to do just that. Keep in mind: a grandly-decorated venue is a blank slate you can transform into anything, any time. And some of these themes and colors are great for year-round use, though we didn't want to repeat them over and over (like Black & White or Fifth Avenue Aqua).

But if you're here for some great color combination or theme inspirations for January, June, or anything in between, read on!

March, April

If your climate cooperates, this is a wonderful time to celebrate spring's earliest bursts of color, flowers and delicate life forms: Lilies of Valley and Shasta daisies, daffodils and tulips, butterflies and dragonflies. Brides are instinctively drawn to pastels like lavender or yellow, whimsical and romantic pairings like red and pink, or combos with a modern bent like pink and lime green. A monochromatic look using all shades of pink is also totally spring (and stunning).

Some popular themes for spring? Cherry Blossom, Butterfly, and Irish or St. Patricks, to name a few.

Also, popular spring color combinations that double as themes include Aqua Blue (Fifth Avenue Style), and Pink & Green.

May, June, July

Summer brides sometimes complain that they can't find any summer themes, besides the usual beach or garden. Not to worry though: there's more here than you might expect. Summer also offers some of the most brightest, most energized palettes for brides who aren't afraid to play it modern. Contemporary picks include orange and fuchsia, green and hot pink, black against any kind of eye-popping-color, and chocolate brown and pink (or aqua).

Favorite themes for summer are numerous, but here are just a few: Garden, Daisy, Enchanted Forest and Victorian Garden, Beach, Starfish, Hawaiian Luau, Preppy/Nautical and Poolside. Don't forget Patriotic or Baseball, Fairytale or Asian Garden, Polka Dot or 50's Retro, and South of the Border, Rustic Country or Western.

Color Themes for the warm summer season include all kinds of Green, Cornflower Blue, Orange & Fuchsia, Black & White Toile with summery accents like yellow or pink, Aqua Blue (beach style), and the lighter purples, like orchid or Aubergine.

Summer

August, September, October

The colors alone bring this season near to the hearts of many brides who can't imagine tying the knot any other time of year. From russet to pumpkin orange and cinnamon to vanilla, the scents and famers' market decor of an outdoor Autumn wedding makes a setting like none other (not to mention the awesome photos!). Another plus: the grapes are ripe, and it's time to celebrate a brand-new season of wine.

Popular colors for this time of year include latte, mocha and chocolate brown, rust orange and burgundy, hunter green and gold. Nature-minded themes are all the rage right now, including New England Harvest, Harvest Modern and Halloween, "Perfect Pear" and Apple, Tuscan and Wine Theme, Herbal and Rustic Country. Chocolate Brown also amounts to a theme ... one that suits the season to a 'T'.

Fall

November

November's long been a sticking point for brides who want to stay close to nature, but aren't huge fans of the bright, brassy colors of autumn. We've try to address this dilemma with our new "Fields of Gold" page, which pays homage to the natural world and November's subtler palette of creams and golds. For more urban, indoor and delectably chic approach, seize on this time of year for a 1930's Retro / Art Deco Theme, with its November-friendly palette of gold, ivory, sepia and black, and its oh-so-apt nostalgic feel.

November

December, January, February

Friends and family are stuck inside, desperately hoping for a romantic diversion. Which is why this time of year's about making big, elegant gestures: going back in time, playing with lighting levels, indulging in romantic fabrics and heavy molding ... in short, transforming an ordinary interior into a portal to another world. Favorite colors for this time of year include ice blue, silver and white, gold, red and green, metallics paired with black, ivory on white and vice versa, and all the shimmery jewel tones.

Top themes that fit the season include those with a pale palette and opulent look, such as Calla, Parisian or Versailles, or those with a holiday feel, such as Christmas, Victorian Christmas, Winter Wonderland, or Diamond or Crystal Theme. Of course, Valentine's Day is a natural for those marrying in February, but the bold red and white palette works just as well for any other deep-winter setting.

Finally, maybe it's the Oscars, or just a need to cut loose after too many dark afternoons, but there's no better time of year to hold an Old Hollywood or even Vegas theme wedding.

As for color themes that suit this time of year? All-White, Regal Red, Black & White, and Royal Purple make good options.

What'd We Miss?

We know this list is hardly exhaustive... there are plenty more themes and color schemes tailor-made for autumn or spring. Why not share some of your favorites below?

Tips & Cautions

  • Picking your colors and even a theme is twice as easy once you've found your venue.

    Hi,

I’m getting married in April 2011 in Az. I’m having the hardest time picking out colors. I originally was thinking some sort of blue, and then I picked my venue, and it doesn’t seem to fit. I started thinking about red or chocolate brown. Right now, I’m completely up in the air and open to anything. Do you have any suggestions? I need to get my bridesmaids dresses decided as soon as possible. Here is a link to my venue and my dress (it will be ivory).

hi stacey, we’re planning to get married maybe november 2011,I want to have 3color combo, could you please suggest what are those so i could have choices.Tanx!

    • Stacey@Favor Ideas

      Bela,
A good place to begin is the location style/colors and the colors you both love. Also the style of wedding you want. If I could see a venue pic or link I would be happy to take a look! :D

  3. Amy

    Hello!

I am getting married on July 30, 2011 in a garden setting. The reception will be held indoors after in a hotel banquet room. I am having major problems deciding on colors. I would love an apple green color, but don’t know what to do with the second (or third) color. Originally thought a violet purple, but I don’t want it to look too bright or cartoon-y. Then I thought I would love navy blue and apple green, but my family thinks it might be too dark for an outdoor summer ceremony. I also don’t want colors that are too light or pastel that would just blend in with the garden surrounding. I’m lost! Do you have any suggestions for me??

    THANKS!

    • Stacey@Favor Ideas

      Amy,
Not at all. Navy and green are gorgeous. Could I see a pic or link to the setting? Also what colors are in the garden? It is always best to pick a color/colors that compliment existing setting. Navy and pink is exceptional together. Plus an all white wedding with girls in apple green would be beautiful.

    Hello,
I am getting married in October 2011 and am having a problem picking out a third color. I want persimmon, burgandy and one more color. My centerpieces are silver and am not sure if I can have a gold table cloth under them….I think it may clash. Any suggestions?

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Theresa,
          * the link

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

Oh yes! Theresa, you could keep them pale silver or deeper silver-grey. I just love how it makes the colors come to life.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Theresa,
Brown could work too. In the silver you did mean silver containers? candelabras? it will work beautifully cause silverware will be a little more silver on the tables.

        • theresa

well we decided against the silver candelabras d/t budget. any other centerpiece ideas? i am thinking about an iron wagon with autumn colored leaves inside with pumpkins and candles surrounding. thoughts?

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Theresa,
That sounds really pretty and whimsical.

  7. ashley

hi i really need your help. My fiancee and i are getting maried this december 2010. We choose hot pink and silver for our motiff, do you think it would look good? the reception will be on night time so we want colors that would stand out at night. and also we still dont have a theme. and im having problems with the design of dress of my BM and flower girls…please help me! thank you.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Ashley,
That is a great color scheme. I wuld keep it classic. Have guys in classic black or even grey. Flower Girls in white or silver with hot pink sashes and bm in hot pink, black, or grey. have them carry hot pink bouquets with silver ribbon. In your reception consider simple white linen, white placesettings, silverware, silver etched or rimmed stemware, matte silver runner and pink centerpieces.

  8. Tracie

    Stacey,

I am getting married January 2011 on a golf course in sunny Florida and having a rough time picking out the perfect colors for this time of year and appropriate colored flowers. I love royal blue / cobalt for my bridesmaids and yet my favorite color is green. I am trying not to make my wedding look similar to my sisters wedding where she had a summer wedding with light blue, silver, white and black as her colores. We wore light blue dresses, silver shoes and I carried a yellow bouquet and the other girls carried an orange colored one… What suggestions do you have to use a royal blue and it not be the same as my sisters? Or do you think this time of year and setting I could do a green? I am so indecisive and in need of some advice. Thank you in advance!

  9. suzy

i’m getting married new years eve. I know I want my bm’s in black, but I don’t know what colors to use. I would like to have good lighting too, so I’m meeting with a lighting guy this weekend. any in what would look good 12/31 with LED lighting? I’m kind of thinking blue on the walls and accenting some things, then warm white or yellow lights? Then what color flowers? This all sounds horrible when I say it, but in my vision its great.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Suzy,
I think the perfect colors for a New Years Eve bash is black, white, silver, and purple( shade of). Or just keep it black silver white then have colors that change as the night progresses.
      * total wow factor

    • Rachel

Dear Suzy, congrats. I got married last december, and we used silver and navy blue, and it looked classy. an Ice blue also goes really well with silver, We just liked the Navy better. So If you were using black and didnt like the purple, you could toy with the ice blue, and it would keep that wintery feel, and still be stunning. It would also add a bit of color to an otherwise dark setting. For flowers we did all white, and it also looked classy. The awesome thing about white flowers is you can put whatever color you want in them if you wish to add color.

    thanks a lot :D

  11. jessica

hello, i am getting married April 9, 2011 indoors in a beautiful hall with an older style. I have decided on a bright purple color for the bridesmaids dresses and was thinking maybe about silver as the other/accent color? DO you have any ideas of any other colors? Also, what is a good/cheap do it yourself favor that would work for my time of year?

  12. meg

hi.. im getting married in december.. can anyone suggest a wedding theme pls. tnx

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Meg,
did you like the winter themes? If not, you can get a theme from your venue or you and your fh personalities or interests/hobbies. If you coudl tell me a little about what you like- along with colors, and even a pic of the venue I would love to help!

  13. katherine

    Hi Stacy,

Im back again!we’ve decided to have a navy blue, lemon yellow and a white wedding color (wedding date: June 18, 2011, Philippines)…what do you think about this color combo?..pls help..thank you so much!

  14. Doris

Am having my church wedding on Sept. 2010 and i still don’t have a choice of colors. I prefer three lovely colors. excluding Pink and blue

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Doris,
What shade of pink and blue were you wanting to use? navy with pink would be very pretty. But since you prefer 3 colors, adding a burgundy with the pink would be nice. or you could go the neutral shades and use champagne, etc. Let me know and I can check out some more options. :D

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Doris,
Overlook my last comment. I was including pink and blue instead of excluding! I got distracted.

What does your venue look like? Do you have a pic or link? Also what are some colors you are drawn too? Your future spouse?

  15. Ashley

Hi, my fiance and i are planning to get married on June 28th 2011, our theme is beach, we will be marrying on the gulf coast on the beach, reception at a beachside resort of country club not sure. I have seen some pretty colors. I really like the red, burnt orange and pink for the sunset. Also, aqua and coral. Honestly I need some good ideas open to any other color suggestions and how to use them. Pictures or anything would def. help me, trying to plan this on my own and a slight budget. Please help!!! :meh:

I just wanted to add that i am open to any other great ides and color combos you think of from dark to pastel, anything. I have light light brown hair with very blonde highlights, actually mostly my hair is blonde from the highlights and I have greens eyes. I just need any help you can give. I am going to wear a type of white, strapless, most likely A-Line and casual but with a bit of elegence it will be most likely long and wear soleless sandels :thankyou: . I want a budget friendly wedding and reception but I want it to be fun and remembered, in the middle of casual to casual-semi-formal.

  16. Kirsten M

me and my hubby are getting married sept 6th 2014, its kind of far away but im trying to decide on colors. i dont really want the fallish colors. Its going to be an outdoor wedding. i really like coral/orangeish, medium pink, medium purple, and like a medium blue. some sites ive read said to stay with no more then 3 colors but i cant decide on which 3. is 4 to much.. would those 4 colors go good? been trying to decide.. please help.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Kirsten M,
It is best to wait til you get your venue to choose wedding colors. Even outdoors it is best to look at the scenery to see what would compliment. The colors you have mentioned sound beautiful. Look at wedding inspiration/photo galleries/then search by color at stylemepretty.com for some GREAT ideas.

  17. Larissa

Ok Ladies I need some HELP… Please!
We are getting married October 9, 2010. Thats like 5 months, 156 days away. So not that much time!! My colors I have decided to go with is Hot Pink and Brown. Do you think I should have a theme? I found these really cute diamond crystals in those colors too? I was thinking someting like that, but not too sure. Ideas? Plus I need some cheap ideas for centerpieces. Any Ideas I would really appreciate!!! Thank you!!

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Larissa,
Great and easy color scheme. Since you found the diamond crystals, you could consider it a diamond theme wedding. you could have glass containers like cylinder vases and put the diamond crystals in bottom with floating candles, set on brown linens with pink napkins. Or use hot pink rose petals with candles..

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Meya,
What colors bloom in the garden where you will be married. It is best to find one that compliments the surroundings. Pink and green is amazing. Another color is yellow. Also what colors to you like/not like.

  19. je

Hi! I need help.. Im getting married on jan 2011 and we don’t have a wedding color yet.. i just want to know if apple green and aqua blue is a good color combination?
Thank you and your help is greatly appreciated!

  20. Darrell

Hi everyone. I need your help. Me & my gf planned to get marry next year 2011 (either September 8 or December 8), what motif is best for the planned month (either September 8 or December 8)? What color combination is best suited for us specially for asian skin tone? My gf suggested burgundy & flesh, but I guess burgundy is too strong for us. What flower combination is good for calia lily as from roses? Please help. Thanks.

    Darrell

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Darrell,
Actually burgundy, turquoise, jewel tones, jade and hunter green would be beautiful on asian skintones. For the motif it depends on what you like, for either one you could just stick with a simple color scheme and have asian accents. That would be nice for both dates. it wouldnt look out of place. Another thing is to use is your venue for the color scheme and motif. It could have a great focal point that could be used everywhere else. A initial monogram is another way to go. blush and burgundy or blush and green would be amazing for either one. So would black, white and blush or burgundy.
        * click on the sample for asian skintone in burgundy
Let me know what you like as far as personality or style of wedding you prefer( romantic, outdoors, etc) and what the venue looks like and I can start pulling ideas.

  21. Ashley

Which is the best accent color for a coral and chocolate themed wedding in the Spring? Ivory, champagne, or gold?

  22. labo

    Hi,
ive always loved looking at this site and the colour combos are really out of this world. Now, to my question, We are getting married in July, 2011 and we are trying to set a theme, well pick colours that would work to be honest. My fiance and I both love purple, though ive always told him i do not want a purple wedding cos my bro had a purple n lime green wedding but im tinkin mayb, cos ive been looking at colours n stuff, i might do purple n green. My problem is, I love apple green and ive seen other colours that really look nice… to b honest, I dont know what we are going to do. Please can you help. R purple, blue and yellow well green ok? i dont know what to do

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Labo,
What style of wedding do you want? rustic, romantic, etc.
      * to see take this quiz

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Labo,
What I would do is ask your future spouse to pick one color and you pick one color and if you have a venue pic or link I can look to see if it will work. For example you like purple and he likes blue. There are some beautiful combos for that, plus your wedding will be different than your brothers by decor etc.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Labo,
Dont know why but I have been tryin got send you this color quiz and it wont let me.
          * gonna try this link

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Labo,
          * here is another by Martha Stewart

Once you take them, if you like, I would like to hear the results. These quizzes really made me think( if I were to get married)what my style would be. I thought I was one style and ended up being beach casual. Which makes sense because I am all about clean, soothing colors and COMFY clothes, and simple, fuss-free things. Who would of thought!

        • labo

hello again stace, I have just done those quiz u sent me and on the knot.com, i came up as rustic and elegant colours. It completely summed up what i am. So its colours inspired by nature and the outdoors. Hmm! With the Martha Stewart one and it says to use Bold colours. Well, I love simple things and like earlier pointed out, its an evening affair so im still torn especially choosing the colour

        • labo

hey stace, sorry this is late. been trying to sort out some stuff but wont work. i have spoken to my fiance about colours and he loves purple. I love purple too but thing is my bro got married using purple and lime green which i didnt want to repeat.
Anyways, he came home one day and showed me a pic he took of some flowers purple, orange and red, and it looked great. My problem now is, i dont want red, my BMs wont look good in red. Also we are planning on an evening event so im tinking colours that would look absolutely gorgeous. Anyhoo! long story short, we are stuck between purple, orange n blue or purple, blue n fuschia pink. We havent yet decided on a theme, but i tot maybe we could just deal with the colours. Il take ur test and c where we fall. Thanks for ur help.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Labo,
What about making it really simple and choosing purple and champagne or ivory? even purple and white. Evening wedding would be beautiful with lighter colors, they show up very well.

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Labo,
          * look at this

it is a vineyard wedding. you could easily do a theme like this. very beautiful and rustic appeal.
          * here are some more to look at

        • labo

thanks stacey, i really appreciate this. Would have a look with my fiance and then decide. Would let you know how it goes. Ta

          hiya!

thanks a lot for your help. Its been wonderful looking at various themes n colour schemes. We’ve decided to stick to purple n champagne for the evening. Forgot to say we are having the wedding in the day time so our purple n blue wld still stick for the day time. We are both from difft culture n we are trying to marry that together so we are having an engagement ceremony, an afternoon wedding and an evening reception.
Once again, tanx a lot. Bless u

    • Sam

      labo,

Me and my fiance are getting married next may. We have picked out clover green and deep plum purple for our wedding, and ivory of course to go with my dress. They look really well together. I havent chose a theme yet, thinking about a vintage/fairy tail theme cus my dress is poofy. lol and its outside, so im not sure, just pick your colors and that should set you in the right direction where everything else will just fall into place. :)

      • labo

        Hi Sam,

Thanks very much for that piece of advice. Sounds like you’ve got everything all planned out. Wish u the very best. I tink ive giving up on colours now but yeah, they look gorgeous 2geda. Im looking for venues atm but wont bother myself. Ive got too much on my plate at the min. Tanx again

  25. Janine

    Hi there

Im gettinf married the 10 July 2010, im thinking of going for colour theme of purple, gey and black. Any thoughts?

  26. jasmin

    Hello,

Im getting married this July 10, 2010. up to now I don’t havn’t decided what theme should i choose. any suggestions?thanks! I just want black, silver and yellow colors to my motiff.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Jasmin,
      * pics

A theme is helpful to decorate with but optional. This could be a color theme, look at what youlove, places, hobbies, just a simple summer theme would be nice. You could also look at your venue and see what style it is. Era theme, etc.

  27. Alicia

I’m getting married in june of 2011, and I’ve been thinking very much about what colors to choose. My fiance and I both agree that light pastel blue is nice, but I’ve been looking for more options, in case I like those better. I’m a brunette, with brown eyes. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. :D

  28. layla

july wedding – 1/2 bridesmaids are wearing short – watermelon with champage sashes – 1/2 champage dress with watermelon sashes….i saw a chiffon gown in navy blue, but am undecided between the blue and chocolate. Or do i go pastelly?? I am blonde and may have a little bit of a tan.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Layla,
Are you a bridesmaid or the bride or a guest?
Actually both should look great on you. The navy will bring out your eyes if they are blue and looks wonderful with a tan. If you choose chocolate make it a rich summery shade of chocolate brown. You can’t go wrong with either actually. If you want to make your tan more noticed then choose lighter shades. What is your color scheme? That can help determine the color to wear?

  29. Denise

    hi stacey,
i already bought the fabric for my bridesmaids(pink lilac) and secondary(lilac) dresses..but for my maid of honor its fushia…i just having a hard time on how to incorporate them with each other…can you give me some ideas..sample dresses and all? or do i just put some beads or gems stones so they will match..like for pink lilac i will put some fuschia and purple gemstone and lilac with fuschia and pink gemstones?…plsss help me….tnx

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Denise,
I wouldn’t add gemstones. I would have sashes that would make them more matching. You can choose to have them all in different colors and let the bouquets do the matching for you.

  30. Tricia

Hello, my wedding is set for March 12, 2011. Im wanting to blend purple and yellow and Im not sure how to do this tastefully. I would like to throw in a 3rd color but Im lost as to what that should be! Or what colors my BMs should wear! Please help me!! Any feedback would be wonderful.

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Tricia,
Hi, since yellow can be difficult to pull off with skintones I suggest purple. lavender is a beautiful color. Instead of adding another color why not have garden style bouquets of light to dark shades of purple with pale yellow. It would compliment a spring wedding and lavender dresses. But a deep purple would work well too. Especially if your going in a more fresh modern way.

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Tricia,
I meant to ask what shades did you like of the purple and yellow? Also, are you having a spring garden wedding or modern etc.?

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Tricia,
made you a board based on your colors. The only other color I would add is spring green but only in touches.

        • Thanks Stacey!
I was considering a lilac color. But Im just so confused! I dont really have a favorite color and I read on here that the venue might bring them out. My main concern is the ballroom and Im wondering if a light purple would do it justice. The look Im going for is traditional (if that makes sense)!

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Tricia,
Lilac is a stunning color. Do you have a pic of the ballroom? I could check it out for you. Also make sure lilac compliments the skintones of the bm’s.

:D ;) :P   :? :love2:    more »
