Month by Month: Wedding Themes and Colors for Every Season

Still at the start of your wedding planning process? Ever wish you had a guide to help narrow down the themes and colors that really suit the time of year you're holding your wedding?

Here we try to do just that. Granted, these are just suggestions ... and they don't take into account destination weddings, or seasons outside of North America, for that matter. Not to mention: a grandly-decorated venue is a blank slate you can transform into anything, any time of year. And some of these themes and colors are really fine for year-round use, though we didn't want to repeat them over and over (Black & White or Fifth Avenue Aqua being two examples).

But all disclaimers aside: if you want some great color combination or theme inspirations for January, June, or anything in between, read on!

March, April

If your climate cooperates, this is a wonderful time to celebrate spring's earliest bursts of color, flowers and delicate life forms: Lilies of Valley and Shasta daisies, daffodils and tulips, butterflies and dragonflies. Brides are instinctively drawn to pastels like lavender or yellow, whimsical and romantic pairings like red and pink, or combos with a modern bent like pink and lime green. A monochromatic look using all shades of pink is also totally spring (and stunning).

Some popular themes for spring? Cherry Blossom, Butterfly, and Irish or St. Patricks, to name a few.

Also, popular spring color combinations that double as themes include Aqua Blue (Fifth Avenue Style), and Pink & Green.

May, June, July

Summer brides sometimes complain that they can't find any summer themes, besides the usual beach or garden. Not to worry though: there's more here than you might expect. Summer also offers some of the most brightest, most energized palettes for brides who aren't afraid to play it modern. Contemporary picks include orange and fuchsia, green and hot pink, black against any kind of eye-popping-color, and chocolate brown and pink (or aqua).

Favorite themes for summer are numerous, but here are just a few: Garden, Daisy, Enchanted Forest and Victorian Garden, Beach, Starfish, Hawaiian Luau, Preppy/Nautical and Poolside. Don't forget Patriotic or Baseball, Fairytale or Asian Garden, Polka Dot or 50's Retro, and South of the Border, Rustic Country or Western.

Color Themes for the warm summer season include all kinds of Green, Cornflower Blue, Orange & Fuchsia, Black & White Toile with summery accents like yellow or pink, Aqua Blue (beach style), and the lighter purples, like orchid or Aubergine.

Summer

August, September, October

The colors alone bring this season near to the hearts of many brides who can't imagine tying the knot any other time of year. From russet to pumpkin orange and cinnamon to vanilla, the scents and famers' market decor of an outdoor Autumn wedding makes a setting like none other (not to mention the awesome photos!). Another plus: the grapes are ripe, and it's time to celebrate a brand-new season of wine.

Popular colors for this time of year include latte, mocha and chocolate brown, rust orange and burgundy, hunter green and gold. Nature-minded themes are all the rage right now, including New England Harvest, Harvest Modern and Halloween, "Perfect Pear" and Apple, Tuscan and Wine Theme, Herbal and Rustic Country. Chocolate Brown also amounts to a theme ... one that suits the season to a 'T'.

Fall

November

November's long been a sticking point for brides who want to stay close to nature, but aren't huge fans of the bright, brassy colors of autumn. We've try to address this dilemma with our new "Fields of Gold" page, which pays homage to the natural world and November's subtler palette of creams and golds. For more urban, indoor and delectably chic approach, seize on this time of year for a 1930's Retro / Art Deco Theme, with its November-friendly palette of gold, ivory, sepia and black, and its oh-so-apt nostalgic feel.

November

December, January, February

Friends and family are stuck inside, desperately hoping for a romantic diversion. Which is why this time of year's about making big, elegant gestures: going back in time, playing with lighting levels, indulging in romantic fabrics and heavy molding ... in short, transforming an ordinary interior into a portal to another world. Favorite colors for this time of year include ice blue, silver and white, gold, red and green, metallics paired with black, ivory on white and vice versa, and all the shimmery jewel tones.

Top themes that fit the season include those with a pale palette and opulent look, such as Calla, Parisian or Versailles, or those with a holiday feel, such as Christmas, Victorian Christmas, Winter Wonderland, or Diamond or Crystal Theme. Of course, Valentine's Day is a natural for those marrying in February, but the bold red and white palette works just as well for any other deep-winter setting. Finally, maybe it's the Oscars, or just a need to cut loose after too many dark afternoons, but there's no better time of year to hold an Old Hollywood or even Vegas theme wedding.

As for color themes that suit this time of year? All-White, Regal Red, Black & White, and Royal Purple.

Holiday

What'd We Miss?

We know this list is hardly exhaustive... there are plenty more themes and color schemes tailor-made for autumn or spring. Why not share some of your favorites below?

MY WEDDING DATE IS FEB 14, 2010. OF COURSE, I WOULD LIKE A VALENTINE WEDDING THEME. BUT I THINK THAT RED AND WHITE IS TOO BORING. DO YOU HAVE OTHER SUGGESTIONS FOR DIFFERENT COLORS OTHER THAN THE TRADITIONAL ONES? THANKS.

I love royal blue and dark purple. We are actually talking about using those colors for our wedding. I just recently got engaged so I don’t have pictures, if you go to http://www.theknot.com the have a link you can look at color combinations. I think gold would be pretty with it. Maybe do gold linens or something. I’m not sure. I’m not very creative with decorating. hopes this helps. :-)

I am wanting to get married either in march on st patricks day or in april at the end of the month and was wondering would my color scheme go with those months? I wanted emerald green, ivory and gold. my dress is a corset ivory and gold dress looks vintage from the creole days, and my flowers would be white roses, calla lily’s and gardenia’s. so i need help, would this be a good idea?

caitlen,
you have an oblong face shape. you should wear studs or button earrings. you can get away with chandelier earrings because they are wider and dangle. as a rule the more detailing on a gown the more simple the jewelry. since your very beautiful dress has lots of beading, i would stick with a great pair of earrings and no necklace. also you can add a very simple elegant bracelet if you wish.
i live in louisiana so unfortunately i am not familiar with washington state venues. i do think outside would be beautiful though!!

caitlin,
i would have them in emerald green. if it looks good on their skintone. you could consider having a champagne sash, which would be in blend with both gold and ivory. it will go with your dress and be gorgeous. for styles you will need the girls to try on the ones that suit their body shape. for instance, davids bridal you can mix and match or pick one color and they can choose the style they love and a bridesmaid feeling comfy on your wedding day and wearing something that looks great on HER body will give lots of confidence, smiles, and most importantly great pictures!! smile. i would keep their dresses in a simple elegant style. keep their main embellishment not on the dress but a great pair of beaded shoes or fantastic jewelry. since your dress is beautifully adorned, i would definitely keep theirs( for example) a simple flowing emerald green knee length dress with gold heels. carrying a bouquet with all one flower style bouquet, like 5 ivory garden roses for example tied with a emerald ribbon/bow with a rhinestone brooch set in center of bow. simple and stunning, will match your dress perfectly without the over adornment.

caitlen,
with an oblong face it is best to avoid piled up hair. have your hair sides pulled up and with a beautiful rhinestone bridal comb, which would wear like a tiara. choose a waterfall veil. it should be worn more to the back side of the crown instead of on the very top of the crown. like the way you are wearing it in the pic.

sammy,
you can still have a simple black tux if you want. or you can go with a navy blue. you can pair navy with many colors, it is like a staple color. i would take cue from the venue you are marrying in. you will want to compliment that as well. do you have your venue yet? if so, what does it look like?

Ann,
i would suggest using simple white. it looks so amazing with apple green. the other accent color can be the colors of the tux or suit. if they are in black, have a apple green, white, black wedding. it would be perfect. this would give you the perfect opportunity to put your bm in classic black with apple green and white bouquets. it is such a refreshing color scheme.

Joy,
here is a board i made. i used simple shades of peach raning form light to dark, what is great about this is you can stick in one color family (peach) cause the dark peach you see in the board looks like a light spice color. i thought creamy white linens with the rhinestone or crystal accents really brought the colors to life. so, actually, just adding “creamy” whites (not stark white) wuld be all you need. i thought the black suit just added class. brown seemed to make it more fallish. if you use the peach from light to deep shades it will look lush and will trick the eye giving an illusion that your flowers were a high ticket item. keep to roses or one type flower only. ( i suggest roses).

oh yes that would be beautiful. you dnt have to have a theme if you dont want. but why not a crystal theme wedding ( taking it from the crystal blue) you could have your centerpieces with acrylic jewels/confetti or rhinestones in bottom of your vases and then fill with water and flowers. tie jeweled monograms on your napkins. have your cake with jewels. have hanging crystals from your arch, it would be really pretty.
*crystal wedding
i saw some “confetti” at walmart in the wedding section.

Hi, I am recently engaged. My fiance and I have decided on royal blue and royal purple with a touch of silver for our wedding. We want a royal theme however we have a problem. We are graduating from college in may and my fiance is commissioning into the US Air Force in may also so we have to have a summer wedding and our colors are not exactly summer colors. My mom thinks we should push the wedding back to september or maybe october but I am not so sure. Any reccomendations? Also we live in Texas so a outdoor summer wedding is out of the question :-(

ivana,
i live in louisiana so i know exactly what you mean with an outdoor wedding!! we have the most unpredictable weather i know!! lol. and your right people would pass out from the heat! your color scheme will work but i would only use blue and purple together in the flowers with silver in the silverware and the other metal accents, bm shoes, jewelry etc.
you could pick either royal blue or royal purple as my main color. i would have the bm in a universally flattering periwinkle or lavender. it would work for a year round color scheme.
*blue and purple wedding
*this is soooo gorgeous!! perfect for your theme! ( perfect for the bm in that universally flattering color i talked about)
tip: purple signifies royalty so i would choose that as my main color with blue floral accents. please post back and let me know if you like any of the ideas. this color scheme is perfect year round, usually colors can be if you put the accents and decor right for the season or mood.

i feel that unless you go for the silly idea of having a christmas themed wedding in the middle of august, or easter at christmas, or something silly like that, then whatever your theme that you choose will go with whatever time of the year is. my fiance and i are planning to get married in May (but a couple of years yet), and are either going for a sea side theme, or a royal blue and royal purple theme, with little hints of dragon flies and butterflies. it’s your wedding, you do what you want, when you want, no-one ought to comment on the theme you choose.

tons of ideas. it depends on the formality you want. i love the khaki/taupe suits perfect for a informal garden wedding. simple black would be perfect for a classier affair. i would have the bm in the shade that works best for their skintone. with a garden wedding it can range form a classic neutral all the way to yellow, pink, green, champagne, etc. flowers should be mainly roses, with lots of greenery. i would not want to compete with the scenery though. the best way to find the perfect colors is to look at the garden or what flower colors bloom. you will want it to fit in. let me know whattch think!! :D

i would actually have champagne linens with black runners, girls in simple black with gold heels. you carry champagne bouquet and let the girls carry a very pale blush bouquet with champagne ribbon, for a pop of color if you wish. or you all carry champagne roses and just make the ribbon different or more roses for you and less for the bm for variation.

eliza, i think apples would be great for a invite, intertwined with trailing greenery. a fern motif is also great! or keep it simple and have white invites with a monogram in green, then tie with a fun ribbon with tiny green apples( find one thats more on elegant side).
