The Victorian Theme Wedding

When people think Victorian, they often think high tea or garden party, filled with doilies and cherub birdbaths, cast iron benches and finger foods, mismatched teacups and "shabby chic."

This is a beautiful way to do Victorian, but it's not the only way. Victorian had an evening style as well. Perhaps the easiest way to picture formal Victorian: imagine the upper-class ballrooms on the Titanic.

Think of crystals and fringe dripping from chandeliers, lamps and candlesticks. Imagine a piano player in the background, softly tapping out a Mozart sonata, or something by Liszt or Chopin. A string quartet would also be common.

Then, picture men in black tails and white gloves, peering over spectacles at their polished pocketwatches. And enormous Lady Ferns (a Victorian favorite) arching over square mahogany stands. The Victorians were obsessed with ferns, Lady or otherwise. You can't overdo them.

Before the Reception

Many people hold a cocktail hour before the reception, to keep guests happy while they're waiting on the bridal party to take pictures.

If you're having one, a wonderful touch would be to scatter a few Victorian-era newspapers around where people can use them to pass the time and break the ice. Place them somewhere central where people aren't afraid to flip through them.

Try eBay for some inexpensive, vintage newspapers, remembering that the Victorian age is from 1837-1914. Take the most picturesque papers and scan in the headlines, articles or ads for imagery to use on your own custom invitations, wedding programs or favor tags.

If your venue allows it, you could also place some nice cigars in the cocktail lounge. A vintage humidor would make for great presentation. Another fine detail would be to add a Victorian-style cigar cutter.

The Big Event

Snap some Victorian-themed photos of the bride and groom at a costume-friendly photography studio, or use a photo editing program to superimpose your faces on old, sepia-toned photographs. Place the results in Victorian-style pewter frames and display at the reception.

It would add greatly to the look of your reception if you have a local prop shop that can rent you some period-style furniture, such as fringed lamps, grandfather clocks, large, faded carpets, overstuffed Windsor chairs, and large oriental vases.

Use silver (polished to perfection) and crystal wherever you can. Silver trays, candlesticks and cutlery. Crystal chandeliers, candelabras, and sparkling wine glasses.

"Charming" Victorian Wedding Customs

Don't miss the repopularized Victorian cake-pull custom, where the bride (or in our case, the baker) ties ribbons to charms and tucks them between the layers of the cake. Before the cake-cutting, each bridesmaid pulls a charm from the layers, and learns her fortune.

An anchor charm meant Stability; a clover, Good Fortune; the flower, Blossoming Love; the cross, Peace; the heart, True Love. And the wedding ring? You can probably guess that one. Hint: it's a lot like the bouquet toss.

Queen Victoria, that wedding trendsetter, started the terribly romantic custom of saving a sprig of ivy from the bridal bouquet, planting it and gifting the cuttings to future generations (of which she had plenty).

The Flowers

Early Victorian bridal bouquet fashion was the tussy mussy — a tightly arranged, hand-tied nosegay of blooms and natural items slipped into a decorative cone.

A later trend was for enormous cascade bouquets, often with a sprig of ivy, which we still see today.

In either case, the bride-to-be would pore over the Language of Flowers before settling on her blooms.

High-Style Victorian Food

High Victorian wasn't so much crumpets and scones as it was the food that even today we link with high society and indulgence. You know the drill: oysters, caviar, beef consommé, filet mignon, truffles, roast duck, foie gras, eclairs, brandy and fine wines. As the years crept forward toward the Edwardian Age, this food was typically served over an unthinkable number of courses, as in eight, ten or more.

Swanky Victorian Attire

Subtle Victorian touches for your wedding day attire could include a silk ribbon for your neck, a cameo necklace or brooch, a pearl choker, a sparkly beaded purse, or a pair of gloves.

Of course, those who aren't afraid to enter costume territory can buy beautiful reproduction Victorian wedding gowns complete with glorious bustles and white lace-up ankle boots. Add crocheted wrist-length gloves.

Victorian men dressed to the nines for formal occasions, wearing white shirts, white vests and white bowties. All this was topped off with a black tailcoat (sometimes referred to as an "ultraformal" traditional style tuxedo), a top hat and white gloves.

Elegant Favors

Think crisp white boxes tied up with brown satin ribbon, small beaded purses, decorative hand fans, tussie mussies, anything floral, anything ornate and pewter. The Victorians adored favors — the more complicated, the better — and used every excuse to hand them out, even at small parties.

    Hi,

I forgot one thing. We’re leaning towards using the Conservatory Room for our reception. It’s nice open and airy. Plus, our colours will fit in perfectly.

Once again, thank-you for your help!

  2. Lynne Butterfield

    Hi Stacey,

    Thanks for the information.

Our colours are black and white with red.

The vow renewal date will be May 11th, 2013. So in the spring.

We haven’t made up our mind about what room the reception will be in.

Below is a picture of what I’m thinking of wearing. I’m not quite sure if it falls into the “victorian” fashion idea.

I really love your wedding boards. They get the idea and inspiration right on the nose.

Here’s his outfit. I’m thinking that our styles don’t exactly jive historically.

    http://www.gentlemensemporium.com/store/vict_mens_04.php

I really appreciate all the questions you’ve asked. It gives us things to think about. I know we have about 1 1/2 years, but I want it to be as perfect as it can be.

    Sincerely,

    Lynne

    Hi Stacey,

My husband and I have agreed on a Victorian themed vow renewal in 2013. Your ideas are so great and have given me wonderful information.

This is a link to where we are having our renewal:

    Thorncrown.com

And our reception site and honeymoon site.

    Crescent-hotel.com

I will definitely keep looking on your website.

    Sincerely,

    Lynne

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Lynne,
Absolutely gorgeous venues. One day I hope to drive up up there and visit Eureka. It looks just beautiful. What are the colors you lean to most? Any faves? Also the season/date your renewing your vows? Also what part of the hotel will your reception take place, the ballroom, conservatory, etc.? Also what color are the drapes and chairs? It was hard to tell in the room pics. If you want to stick the traditional victorian route, white weddings were all in. My first thought was a simple black and white wedding.

      * take a look at this

      * Here is a list of the wedding boards made for previous brides. I have some victorian wedding boards in the list, if you would like to take a peek…

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Lynne,
Check out the wedding cake on this site, it is a teacup cake topper holding flowers…

Strong beliefs were associated with color meanings, day to get married poem, flower meanings, etc. Roses were popular.Lace overlays or table linens, paper cones used to fill with flower petals etc., tussie mussies, table lamps for centerpieces would look nice( think titanic),color palettes: pinks, greens, and gold, or rich jewel-toned blues, burgundy, and copper.( link wont allow me to post, I urge to google search this link… victorian style wedding the knot ( it is loaded with info, I will try to post the link again to see if it goes through).

        • Lynne Butterfield

          Good Morning Stacey,

Thank-you for the new information. I really liked the flowers around the tea pot, and the red/candle/mirror centerpieces. We want to DIY as much as we can to keep costs down.

I’ve looked at the http://www.crescent-hotel catering menu. What fantastic offerings they have. It’ll be hard to chose just a few options.

I’m looking into asking http://www.thorncrown.com to close the chaple early so that we could have our ceremony earlier in the day. That way it will still be light outside during most of our cocktail hour and reception. I mean with all the windows in the Conservatory, you should take advantage of the view.

I even found a purse to crochet out of white thread. It looks so pretty.

I was thinking of crocheting a doily for every place setting to put the plates on. That would give it a personal touch. Plus I have more than enough time to get about 45 of them done.

          Thank-you for your invaluable help.

          Have a great day.

          Lynne

  4. Draygon

Mine and my Fiance’s wedding is going to be a victorian goth theme.. But im having trouble thinking of The kind of favors i should put out. Our colors are purple and black because we are both pretty punk lol. Can someone help me?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Draygon,
Candles would be an excellent choice. Or you could have heart, dragonfly, butterfly, shaped cookies iced in goth designs/colors. Consider masks, black matchbooks, neat lil’ blace lace bags or boxes of candy/chocolate. Homemade Cd’s even make a great favor.

  5. Serena

Hi, I’m throwing my sister a victorian bridal shower. Hat’s, gloves, the whole thing. I’m looking for victorian shoe place card holders. I’ve seen them before, but can’t seem to locate them.

    Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

  6. Missy

I need help. We are having our wedding in November 2011, and I want to combine fall theme with victorian, but I really have no idea where to start. I am really not creative or good with color scheme. We are having our ceremony and reception at the Harding Allen Estate in Barre MA, it is an old mansion. Thank you in advance for any advice. :D

  7. Lisa

Hi, I’m planning a Victorian wedding on October 9th 2011. My original color scheme was ivory, dusty rose, & gold. However, I’m a little concerned about the color scheme being that the wedding is in the fall. What do you think? I’m getting married at Stone Manor Country Club where there are already many antique and Victorian decorations. I am having trouble finding bridesmaid dresses that fit into my theme, my dress is almost all lace with a lace jacket that goes along with it by Justin Alexander. I wanted to try to find lace bridesmaid dresses but I need long because our wedding is very formal/elegant. What color bridesmaid dresses would you use? I originally looked at harvest gold dresses in Alfred Angelo with an accent of Dusty rose or the other way around, dusty rose dresses with harvest gold accent. I purchased gold place card frames but I am seeing in many of the Victorian sites that you should use pewter for decorating and table setting. Let me know what your opinion is, I’d love to hear your feedback!
here is where I’m getting married.

I wanted to use these for the tables but what color would you use if I’m using gold in my color scheme?

and these are the place cards I’m using in gold

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Lisa,
No not at all. Gold was just as popular as pewter. So I would stick with the gold in all those table accessories. Your color scheme is going to be perfect for fall and for your theme. I wouldn’t change anything. ;) For the bm dresses the tricky part is their skintone with gold dresses. Why not have them in nonlace dresses then tie lace ribbon around their bouquets? It would give a old era vibe. I would do a swatch of the colors or have them try on dresses at a bridal store to see which color works and style. Jim hjelm has some gorgeous designs!!

    • Alyssa

If you want a Victorian style wedding, you definitely do NOT want to go with red for the bridesmaids dresses — a young woman wearing red in that era was automatically assumed to be a prostitute. Your original idea of a harvest gold or dusty pink would be much more appropriate to the theme and era.

  8. Nicole

Hi! Please send me pictures of current designers who design Victorian style wedding dresses. Thanks:)

  9. Brittani

These are all great ideas. I am planning my wedding in June of 2011 in Astoria, Oregon. I am just having problems with where exactly I want the wedding to be at. I am torn between the wreck of Peter Iredale or the Astoria Column. I want to stick with my semi-victorian theme. Also it is military, so having problems with a color scheme since my fiance and his best man will be dressed in their army greens. Any ideas?

    Brittani

  10. Dee

    Hi stacey,
My wedding will be on dec 2011. I want a modern victorian themed wedding. But i haven’t decided yet on the color motifs. I want different colors for the dresses of my bridesmaids, principal sponsors and for the mothers of bride and groom. I hope you can help me. :) we’re having afternoon wedding in a gothic style church.

  11. Samantha

I’m having a Victorian themed wedding in December of 2011, but I am having a slight issue. I’m really wanting the men to be in tuxes, but budget is a big problem. My fiance and I are worried that it will be hard for everyone to afford to rent a tux for one night and my fiance sees it mostly as wasting money. Is there any way to get my tux look at a more affordable price? Also, due to their country background the men are all wanting to be in starched jeans and button up shirts with nice boots, I am perfectly fine with them wearing boots, but I really want my black tie affair. Is there any way to find middle ground?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Samantha,
Actually some brides have the grooms in jeans with black jackets etc. Mor of the victorian west wedding. Which to me, sounds like it would fit very nicely for both of you.
      * like this board I put together a couple weeks ago.

    • Emma

There is a middle ground to everything!
I definitely understand the fact that you want a tux night, what else would call for beautifully elegant than having all the men in tux? Having the men in boots and jeans might be their customary dress, but it would just clash with all the beautiful work that you have put into the wedding. The beautiful middle ground would be for a formal wear, maybe white and black evening attire for the men, or maybe just evening attire. Dress pants and shoes. . . what man doesn’t have dress pants and shoes? There’s also another idea of using the formal vests instead of a black tux? that would definitely show a vintage look as well in the process!

      P.S. i hope this helped

  12. hi im 18 and me and my fiance are planning on having a victorian style wedding but the problem is money… I love the era but money is a little tight right now… me and my mad of honor are planning everything and I just wanted to get your imput on a few things we have in mind…

1: Wedding is going to be in the fall…
2:my wedding colors are going to be maroon, royal blue and dark green and maybe a deep violet…
3:my wedding dress is going to be whie and royal blue…

thats all we have so far any ideas or help???

  13. ambria

Hi stacy my theme isnt victorian but i see how you are helping these other brides and Im having trouble with my red/black/white colors. Our theme is more royal and bling

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Ambria,
Beautiful location. what about linens? What color will you be using? Usually locations have a standard color or can offer other colors. In this venue, I think white linens would look best. I was unsure if you wanted to use chair covers? If so, using a simple white chair cover with black sash would look nice, then pull in some lush red centerpieces. This venue has alot of ornamentation and doenst need “too” much. After looking at the pics I do like the low centerpieces but you can use both. A nice gold and crystal candelabra with red roses would be beautiful.

      • Stacey@FavorIdeas

        Ambria,
My apologies for saying the venue has alot of ornamentation. I had meant that for another post. But the rest of the comment is yours. Do you have a link to your venue?
        * loads of pics

  14. patti

I need help…my daughter -in -law to be wants a wedding bouquet of herbs. I have scanned everywhere i can think of to find herbs for the Sept 25 wedding in New York…any suggestions

  15. Kay

    Hello

I am planning my wedding to take place in a Victorian theatre. It has a red background so a red theme seems to be the most obvious choice, but I always imagined I would get married with my bridesmaids in pastel-based colours, but now I’m worried this will clash with the red…

I love the thought of having big candelabras on the tables, but am concerned that this may be expensive.

If anyone has any advice or tips in terms of themes / colours etc, and how to make best use of the setting we have I’d be really grateful.

We will be having our reception outside, the meal in the victorian theatre and then the evening dancing either in the theatre or down in the conservatory overlooking the grounds.

Sorry not to be more specific, it’s just so difficult knowing where to start…

Any advice gratefully appreciated. The more I look at this site the more I come around to the idea of a Victorian style theme…

    Thanks!!

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Kay,
What about having the bridesmaids in a lavender and then having red and purples for the flowers? Guys in classic tuxes? Or a mix of victorian flowers? you can still do pastels just make sure it will compliment the red. *Like this
      * or this( if you went pink)

        • Kay

Thank you so much Stacey for getting back to me so quickly.

          That’s really helpful!!

I have also since been looking through some of your previous postings and am starting to have the idea of red bridesmaids and favours etc grow on me.

I always imagined it would be too dark and too deep for a summer wedding, but I think I may have been wrong. I think it can look lovely if done right. I just want to make sure it has quite an elegant style, and for some reason I always thought pastels would help with that. But red is becoming my new favourite. Any tips or hints for decorating a victorian style theatre in a red theme would be much appreciated. Your advice and all the links you provide are so helpful, thank you LOADS for all your inspirational thoughts! :D

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

Kay, Do you have a link to the venue? Reason being, I can see what decor it needs. If it is already ornate then you will not need to much. I think candelabras would be beautiful or table lamps and they shouldnt be that expensive. That would be going in the right direction. Usually the victorians had an abundance of florals, garlands, roses, etc. I am gonna try to find this one picture that would fit this theme to a tee!

        • Stacey@FavorIdeas

          Kay,
I made you this board cause I wanted to give you the pastels you always thought you would have. The color palette that came together in the board was green, peach, and in the centerpieces and the flwoergirl dress pulls in the shade of red in the venue. Wasn’t sure what that was so I put deep red.It took a while to get the colors and the layout right. Let me know what you think.

  16. shar

We are trying to do teacups as favors for a victorian wedding, any ideas as to wear we can get a bulk lot of 100 cheap?

    • Stacey@FavorIdeas

      Shar,
Actually the best place to get teacups is at flea markets and thrift stores. They will be mismatched which adds to the appeal. I would start now and also check out ebay.

  17. Melissa

Hi!! Im trying to help a really good friend of mine plan her wedding, the date is 12-11-10, the theme were trying to go for is winter intamit love.. the colors are gold burgandy and white… any ideas?! i would really appreciate it!

  18. Betsy

I am planning a semi-victorian wedding. I absolutely love the idea of having lace parasols and lace gloves all over for my reception. I am going to drape pearls over champagne bottles and over the lace gloves on the tables. I have also found some very pretty small jewelry boxes with roses. The boxes are all white and can hold a photo on top. These are going to be my favors! All the lace and pearls I can have everywhere. This is what I see when I think victorian!

  19. Mikky

So I’m having some trouble with a wedding style. We were originally just going to do a basic wedding, we’re simplistic yet stylish couple we like the modern idea of less is more. But recently, like today, my fiance decided he really really wants to wear a Victorian style pride & prejudice suit. How can I tie this into my wedding without having to wear lacy dresses and have to have everything gold or red. I don’t mind the red and white theme infact I think it looks beautiful but i want it to still look modern .. and victorian.. at the same time lol. So can you give me any ideas of what i can do to let him have his dream tux and still keep my bridesmaids and I from being laced to the ears?

  20. Cecil Icamina

My wedding will be on May 2,2009. The color motiffs are rust ( not the orangey rust, but more on the brown side ) and matte gold. The theme is victorian. I’m a Filipino (asian) ,but i really love everything victorian. I’ve designed my own wedding gown and entourage gowns. The gowns are all victorian inspired ( laces, tiers,
petticoats, ribbons ) .For our wedding favors, we decided to give lil white teacups and saucers with English teas ( maybe 1 or 2 teabags )and a sachet of Maxwell coffee singles.Do you have any other suggestions? I would really appreciate your help. And also there will be a lot of classical music (mozart, chopin, bach etc.)I’ll wrap/cover the two guestbooks with dyed ( to match the color motiff ) lace . And maybe style the pen ( for signing) with an ostrich feather.

  21. lauryn

i am having one of the hardest times trying to find a theme to my wedding in 9 months its going to be thanksgiving weekend and im really not interested in the whole punkin patch wedding thing its just not me, ive looked at site after site or ideas and im not coming across any what are some suggestions anyone might have. :?

    • stacey

lauryn, i noticed you posted at this theme site. are you wanting a victorian wedding? if not, can you tell me the type of vision you see. what are some of your fave colors? your fh fave colors? and waht type of formality( casual, informal, semi formal, formal) and vibe you want guests to feel( fun, laid back, bold, elegant etc) i would love to give you some ideas!! just let me know a little about you and your fh likes and dislikes.. maybe we can narrow down some ideas. also the venue will it be outdoors? what about the colors of the venue, that is important. you will want the colors to compliment it well. i do have one idea. black or brown with white and green. i think lush arrangements of lush and abundant greenery would be stunning, keeping only the flowers to the bride and bridal party. greenery arch or other greenery alter decor. have the bridal party both bm and gm in black attire( which is great cause this can be wear again friendly, with a knee length dress and guys simple black suit being most rewearable.). have sparkling crystals hanging from the greenery arch. incorporate shimmer with sparling crystals here and there. continue this for the centerpieces with cut glass patterned containers( looks like waterford crystal). for your bouquet carry your fave color, since anything could blend with this theme, let bm carry their fave flower in white. or let them carry greenery bouquets( beautiful and pops against black dresses) with you carrying the white bouquet or fave color. if you live where greenery can be clipped you can save a bundle of $$$ in decor. for your napkins just visit your local craft store and buy crystal garland or strands. wrap crystal stems around your napkins. keep you table linens white. this is a way to bring in the wonders of the season ( especially with the leaves and greenery) without the pumpkin theme. for your invites have a stem of greenery gracing the top. to me this decor style gives the awe that floral arrangements give, cause noone sees greenery as the main decor much in weddings and i dont know why its so beautiful!! to me this is a fresh, modernish, yet comfy wedding scheme. this color scheme will give off a vibe” it only looks expensive.
here is an example of the black dresses with green bouquet( so jaw dropping yet simple to put together):
*Mandy and Mark in Big Sky, MT
      *ariella chezar florals

also for more pics google image black and green wedding then brown and green wedding ( this is just as gorgeous!!)
if you use your fave color for brides bouquet, have wedding cake in your and fh fave colors. dont worry if its bolder colors or not like the venue colors. this is where the greenery comes in it will blend the pops of color well. looking forward to your reply. :D

    • mitchie

I have imagined myself getting wedded during the midfall which is around halloween to thankgiving.

actually, i have imagined pumpkin lights beside a creek very romantic for me. i saw this array of pumpkin lights in NY as a show and have been of dreaming of the same gazebo beside a small body of water with maybe paper boat lights to float while the sun sets in the background. i have an old screwy soul so i guess that works for me.

      • stacey

        mitchie,
